Steering Wheel Removal Note
| CAUTION | Do not try to remove the steering wheel by hitting the shaft with a hammer. The column will be damaged. |
- Set the wheels in the straight-ahead position.
- Remove the steering wheel using any commercially available puller.
Scheme 11
Scheme 11: Outer Cylinder Removal Note
- Insert the key into the key cylinder and turn it to the ACC position.
- Insert a pin from the position indicated by the arrow in the figure, and while pressing the lock bar with the pin, remove the key cylinder from the steering lock component.
Scheme 12
Scheme 12: Steering Lock Component Removal Note
- Remove the bolt using a flathead screwdriver, and then remove the steering lock component.
- Make a groove in the heads of the steering lock mounting bolts using a chisel and hammer.
- Remove the steering lock component.
Scheme 13
Scheme 13: Steering Lock component Installation Note
- Install the steering lock component to the steering shaft
- Verify that the lock operates correctly.
- Install new steering lock mounting bolts.
- Tighten the bolts until the heads break off.
Scheme 14
Scheme 14: Steering Shaft Installation Note
- Verify that the tilt / telescope lever is in the LOCK position.
- Tighten the bolts in alphabetical order.
Steering Wheel Installation Note
- Set the wheels in the straight-ahead position and install the steering wheel.
Scheme 15
Scheme 15: STEERING SHAFT INSPECTION
Scheme 16
- Inspect the column bearing for excessive play and damage.
- Verify that the measurement of the steering shaft indicated in the figure is as specified. If not within the specification replace the steering shaft component. Steering shaft length 315-320 mm {12.41-12.59 in}
- Inspect the tilt/telescope mechanism operation for the following. Tilt/telescope lever moves smoothly from the lock to the unlock position. Steering shaft is fixed firmly when the tilt/telescope lever is locked. If there is any malfunction, replace the steering shaft.
STEERING GEAR AND LINKAGE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION
| CAUTION | Performing the following procedures without first removing the ABS wheel-speed sensor may possibly cause an open circuit in the wiring harness if it is pulled by mistake. Before performing the following procedures, disconnect the ABS wheel-speed sensor connector (axle side) and fix the wiring harness to an appropriate place where it will not be pulled by mistake while servicing the vehicle. |

- Remove the front crossmember, lower arm, front stabilizer, and steering gear and linkage as a single unit. (See «FRONT CROSSMEMBER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-345234-S22968134492009102000000) .)
- Remove the front stabilizer from the crossmember component. (See «FRONT STABILIZER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-345234-S11804986922009102000000) .)
- Remove in the order indicated in the table.
- Install in the reverse order of removal.
- After installation, inspect the front wheel alignment and adjust it if necessary. (See «FRONT WHEEL ALIGNMENT»(ref-345222-S21528499172009102000000) .)
STEERING ANGLE SENSOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION
- When removing or installing the steering angle sensor, refer to the clock spring removal/installation procedure. (See «CLOCK SPRING REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-345267-S26162634342009102000000) .)
Scheme 18
Scheme 18: STEERING ANGLE SENSOR INSPECTION
- Remove the column cover.
- Turn the ignition switch to the ON position and measure the voltage between steering angle sensor terminal A and ground. If there is any malfunction, inspect the wiring harness between steering angle sensor terminal A and ignition switch. Repair or replace if necessary, (without DSC) If there is any malfunction, inspect the wiring harness between steering angle sensor terminal A and DSC HU/CM terminal AB. Repair or replace if necessary, (with DSC) Standard voltage B+
- Measure the voltage between steering angle sensor terminal D and ground. If there is any malfunction, inspect the wiring harness between steering angle sensor terminal D and EHPAS control module terminal 3A. Repair or replace if necessary, (without DSC) If there is any malfunction, inspect the wiring harness between steering angle sensor terminal D and DSC HU/CM terminal AH. Repair or replace if necessary, (with DSC) Standard voltage 0V
- Turn the ignition switch off.
- Connect the M-MDS to the DLC-2.
- Select the STEER_RATE PID. (see «ELECTRO HYDRAULIC POWER ASSIST STEERING (EHPAS) ON-BOARD DIAGNOSIS [ELECTRO HYDRAULIC POWER ASSIST STEERING (EHPAS)]»(ref-345272-S25672473922009102000000) .)
- Verify the STEER_RATE changes when the steering wheel is turned to the left and right. If there is any malfunction, replace the steering angle sensor. (See «CLOCK SPRING REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-345267-S26162634342009102000000) .) Standard When the steering wheel is turned to the left: STEER_RATE changes positively. When the steering wheel is turned to the right: STEER_RATE changes negatively.
