Note. Most powertrain (P-code) DTCs are diagnosed in the Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) manual. If the P-code retrieved is not listed below, refer to INTRODUCTION - GASOLINE MODELS and/or INTRODUCTION - HYBRID to continue diagnostics.

Note. The Smart Junction Box (SJB) is also known as the Generic Electronic Module (GEM).

Note. Some of these modules utilize a 5-character DTC followed by a 2-character failure-type code. The failure-type code provides information about specific fault conditions such as opens, or shorts to ground. Continuous memory DTCs have an additional 2-character DTC status code suffix to assist in determining DTC history.

DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) TABLE

Inspection and Verification

  1. Verify the customer concern.
  2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of electrical damage. VISUAL INSPECTION TABLE Electrical Smart Junction Box (SJB) fuse 12 (7.5A) Wiring, terminals or connectors Driver Door Module (DDM)
  3. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
  4. If the cause is not visually evident, connect the scan tool to the Data Link Connector (DLC). NOTE: Make sure to use the latest scan tool software release.
  5. If the scan tool does not communicate with the VCM : Check the VCM connection to the vehicle. Check the scan tool connection to the VCM . Refer to «PINPOINT TEST AF: NO POWER TO THE SCAN TOOL»(ref-355946-S03084164432010013000000) , to diagnose no power to the scan tool. NOTE: The Vehicle Communication Module (VCM) LED prove-out confirms power and ground from the DLC are provided to the VCM .
  6. If the scan tool does not communicate with the vehicle: Verify the ignition key is in the ON position. Verify the scan tool operation with a known good vehicle. Refer to «PINPOINT TEST A: THE PCM DOES NOT RESPOND TO THE SCAN TOOL»(ref-355946-S02817008552010013000000) to diagnose no response from the PCM.
  7. Carry out the network test. If the scan tool responds with no communication for one or more modules, refer to «INSPECTION AND VERIFICATION»(ref-355946-S34749853742010013000000) . If the network test passes, retrieve and record the continuous memory DTCs.
  8. Clear the continuous DTCs and carry out the self-test diagnostics for the DDM .
  9. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to «DTC TABLES»(ref-355947-S07378034572010013000000) . For all other DTCs, refer to «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) TABLE»(ref-355947-S19553737032010013000000) .
  10. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, GO to «SYMPTOM TABLE»(ref-355947-S00908224352010013000000) .

  1. A1 REVIEW THE DTCs Review the DTCs from the DDM self-test. Is only DTC B106F present? Yes: INSTALL a new DDM . REFER to «DRIVER DOOR MODULE (DDM)»(ref-355947-S03477812432010013000000) . TEST the system for normal operation. No: CORRECT any DTCs present other than DTC B106E (DTC B106F may also be present). REFER to «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) TABLE»(ref-355947-S19553737032010013000000) . After the repair, GO to A2 .
  2. A2 CARRY OUT THE DDM SELF-TEST Carry out the DDM self-test. Is only DTC B106F present? Yes: INSTALL a new DDM . REFER to «Removal and Installation»(ref-355947-S18294268812010013000000) . TEST the system for normal operation. No: The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern was caused by a fault in one of the output circuits, which is no longer present.

Pinpoint Test B: DTC B1317

Note. DTC B1317 may be stored in the module memory due to previous battery charging or vehicle jump starting events.

  1. B1 CHECK FOR DTC B1317, B1676 OR P0563 SET IN OTHER MODULES Ignition ON. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: (All CMDTCs) Self-Test. Retrieve the continuous memory DTCs from all modules. Is DTC B1317, B1676 or P0563 (PCM) set in more than one module? Yes: REFER to «CHARGING SYSTEM»(ref-355931) to diagnose an overcharging condition. No: GO to B2 .
  2. B2 CHECK THE BATTERY VOLTAGE Turn off all interior/exterior lights and accessories. Start and run the engine at approximately 2,000 rpm for 3 minutes while monitoring the battery voltage. Does the battery voltage rise to 15.5 volts or higher? Yes: REFER to «CHARGING SYSTEM»(ref-355931) to diagnose an overcharging condition. No: GO to B3 .
  3. B3 RECHECK FOR DTC B1317 Turn the engine off. Ignition ON. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: DDM Self-Test. Clear the continuous memory DTCs. Carry out the DDM self-test. Is DTC B1317 present? Yes: INSTALL a new DDM . REFER to «Removal and Installation»(ref-355947-S18294268812010013000000) . TEST the system for normal operation.   1. C1 RECHECK THE DDM DTCs Ignition ON. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: DDM Self-Test. Clear the DTCs. Repeat the DDM self-test. Is DTC B1318 still present? Yes: GO to C2 . No: The system is operating normally at this time. The DTC may have been set previously during battery charging or while jump starting the vehicle.
  2. C2 CHECK FOR CHARGING SYSTEM DTCs IN THE PCM Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: PCM Self-Test. Retrieve the continuous memory DTCs from the PCM. Is DTC P0620, P0625, P0626 or P065B set in the PCM? Yes: REFER to «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) TABLE»(ref-355931-S42235723192010013000000) . No: GO to C3 .
  3. C3 CHECK THE BATTERY CONDITION AND STATE OF CHARGE Ignition OFF. Check the battery condition and verify the battery is fully charged. Refer to «PINPOINT TEST A: BATTERY CONDITION TEST»(ref-355968-S31115854422010013000000) . Is the battery OK and fully charged? Yes: GO to C4 . No: REFER to «CHARGING SYSTEM»(ref-355931) .
  4. C4 CHECK THE DDM VOLTAGE SUPPLY Measure and record the voltage at the battery. Disconnect: DDM C568b. Ignition ON. Measure the voltage between the DDM C568b-1, circuit SBP12 (GN/RD), harness side and ground. Is the voltage within 0.2 volt of the recorded battery voltage? Yes: GO to C5 . No: REPAIR the circuit for high resistance. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  5. C5 CHECK THE DDM GROUND CIRCUIT Ignition OFF. Disconnect: Negative Battery Cable. Measure the resistance between the DDM C568b-24, circuit GD126 (BK/WH), harness side and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? Yes: GO to C6 . No: REPAIR the circuit for high resistance. TEST the system for normal operation.
  6. C6 CHECK FOR CORRECT DDM OPERATION Connect: Negative Battery Cable. Disconnect the DDM connectors. Check for: corrosion damaged pins pushed-out pins Connect the DDM connectors and make sure they seat correctly. Operate the system and verify the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? Yes: INSTALL a new DDM . REFER to «Removal and Installation»(ref-355947-S18294268812010013000000) . TEST the system for normal operation. No: The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.

Pinpoint Test D: DTC U0140

  1. D1 VERIFY CUSTOMER CONCERN Ignition ON. Verify there is an observable symptom present. Is an observable symptom present? Yes: GO to D2 . No: The system is operating normally at this time. The DTC may have been set due to high network traffic or an intermittent fault condition.
  2. D2 CHECK THE COMMUNICATION NETWORK Ignition ON. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test. Carry out the network test. Does the SJB pass the network test? Yes: GO to D3 . No: REFER to «INSPECTION AND VERIFICATION»(ref-355946-S34749853742010013000000) .
  3. D3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE SELF-TEST Check for recorded DDM DTCs from the self-test. Is DTC B1317 or DTC B1318 recorded?   1. G1 RECHECK THE DSM DTCs Ignition ON. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: DSM Self-Test. Clear the DTCs. Repeat the DSM self-test. Is DTC B1318 still present? Yes: GO to G2 . No: The system is operating normally at this time. The DTC may have been set previously during battery charging or while jump starting the vehicle.
  2. G2 CHECK FOR CHARGING SYSTEM DTCs IN THE PCM Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: PCM Self-Test. Retrieve the continuous memory DTCs from the PCM. Is DTC P0620, P0625, P0626 or P065B set in the PCM? Yes: REFER to «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) TABLE»(ref-355931-S42235723192010013000000) . No: GO to G3 .
  3. G3 CHECK THE BATTERY CONDITION AND STATE OF CHARGE Ignition OFF. Check the battery condition and verify the battery is fully charged. Refer to «PINPOINT TEST A: BATTERY CONDITION TEST»(ref-355968-S31115854422010013000000) . Is the battery OK and fully charged? Yes: GO to G4 . No: REFER to «PINPOINT TEST B: SYSTEM VOLTAGE LOW OR BATTERY IS DISCHARGED»(ref-355931-S10511114692010013000000) .
  4. G4 CHECK THE DSM VOLTAGE SUPPLY Measure and record the voltage at the battery. Disconnect: DSM C3299a. Ignition ON. Measure the voltage between the DSM C3299a-1, circuit SBB32 (VT/RD), harness side and ground. Is the voltage within 0.2 volt of the recorded battery voltage? Yes: GO to G5 . No: REPAIR the circuit for high resistance. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  5. G5 CHECK THE DSM GROUND CIRCUITS Ignition OFF. Disconnect: Negative Battery Cable. Disconnect: DSM C3299b. Measure the resistance between the DSM C3299a-2, circuit GD126 (BK/WH), harness side and ground. Measure the resistance between the DSM C3299b-24, circuit GD126 (BK/WH), harness side and ground. Are the resistances less than 5 ohms? Yes: CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to G6 . No: REPAIR the circuit for high resistance. CONNECT the negative battery cable. TEST the system for normal operation.
  6. G6 CHECK FOR CORRECT DSM OPERATION Disconnect the DSM connectors. Check for: corrosion damaged pins pushed-out pins Connect the DSM connectors and make sure they seat correctly. Operate the system and verify the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? Yes: INSTALL a new DSM . REFER to «Removal and Installation»(ref-355947-S20159905812010013000000) . TEST the system for normal operation. No: The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.

Pinpoint Test H: DTC U0140

Refer to the appropriate SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article for schematic and connector information.

  1. H1 VERIFY CUSTOMER CONCERN Ignition ON. Verify there is an observable symptom present. Is an observable symptom present? Yes: GO to H2 . No: The system is operating normally at this time. The DTC may have been set due to high network traffic or an intermittent fault condition.
  2. H2 CHECK THE COMMUNICATION NETWORK Ignition ON. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test. Carry out the network test. Does the SJB pass the network test? Yes: GO to H3 . No: REFER to «INSPECTION AND VERIFICATION»(ref-355946-S34749853742010013000000) .
  3. H3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE SELF-TEST Check for recorded DSM DTCs from the self-test. Is DTC B1317 or DTC B1318 recorded? Yes: For DTC B1317, Go To «PINPOINT TEST F»(ref-355947-S29422150082010013000000) . For DTC B1318, Go To «PINPOINT TEST G»(ref-355947-S05863424912010013000000) . No: GO to H4 .
  4. H4 RECHECK THE DSM DTCs NOTE: If new modules were installed prior to the DTC being set, the module configuration may be incorrectly set during Programmable Module Installation (PMI) or the PMI may not have been carried out. Clear the DTCs. Repeat the DSM self-test. Is DTC U0140 still present? Yes: GO to H5 . No: The system is operating correctly at this time. The DTC may have been set due to high network traffic or an intermittent fault condition.
  5. H5 CHECK FOR DTC U0140/U0140:00 SET IN OTHER MODULES Clear all DTCs. Ignition OFF. Ignition ON. Wait 10 seconds. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Self-Test. Retrieve the continuous memory DTCs from all modules. Is DTC U0140/U0140:00 set in other modules? Yes: INSTALL a new SJB . REFER to «Installation»(ref-355947-S38460867092010013000000) . No: INSTALL a new DSM . REFER to «Removal and Installation»(ref-355947-S20159905812010013000000) .

Pinpoint Test I: DTC U0155

Note. If DTC B106F is present and a new SJB is to be installed, the fault condition must be corrected first. Failure to correct the fault condition first may cause damage to the new SJB , resulting in a repeat repair.

Note. If DTC B106F is present, DTC B1342 may also be present. At this time, ignore these DTCs and follow the necessary diagnostics to resolve DTC B106E and any other DTCs that are present. DTC B106E is present only when there is another DTC due to a software issue or a circuitry issue that must be resolved before another self-test is run. Each time a self-test is run, one of the 3 thresholds is used. Once the 3 thresholds are used, DTCs B106F and B1342 is present and the SJB must be replaced. All other DTCs MUST be resolved first, or else the new SJB begins to have its 3 thresholds used with each self-test that is run.

  1. J1 REVIEW THE DTCs Review the DTCs from the SJB self-test. Are only DTCs B106E and B106F present? Yes: INSTALL a new SJB . REFER to «Installation»(ref-355947-S38460867092010013000000) . TEST the system for normal operation. No: CORRECT any DTCs present other than DTCs B106E and B106F. REFER to «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) TABLE»(ref-355947-S19553737032010013000000) . After the repair, GO to J2 .
  2. J2 CARRY OUT THE SJB SELF-TEST Carry out the SJB self-test. Is only DTC B106F present (DTC B1342 may also be present)? Yes: INSTALL a new SJB . REFER to «Installation»(ref-355947-S38460867092010013000000) . TEST the system for normal operation. No: The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern was caused by a fault in one of the output circuits.

Pinpoint Test K: DTC B1317

Refer to the appropriate SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article for schematic and connector information.

Note. DTC B1317 may be stored in the module memory due to previous battery charging or vehicle jump starting events.

  1. K1 CHECK FOR DTC B1317, B1676 OR P0563 SET IN OTHER MODULES Ignition ON. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Retrieve All CMDTCs Self-Test. Retrieve the continuous memory DTCs from all modules. Is DTC B1317, B1676 or P0563 (PCM) set in more than one module? Yes: REFER to «DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING»(ref-355931-S27320907842010013000000) to diagnose an overcharging condition. No: GO to K2 .
  2. K2 CHECK THE BATTERY VOLTAGE Turn off all interior/exterior lights and accessories. Start and run the engine at approximately 2,000 rpm for 3 minutes while monitoring the battery voltage. Does the battery voltage rise to 15.5 volts or higher? Yes: REFER to «DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING»(ref-355931-S27320907842010013000000) to diagnose an overcharging condition. No: GO to K3 .
  3. K3 RECHECK FOR DTC B1317 Turn the engine off. Ignition ON. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: SJB Self-Test. Clear the continuous memory DTCs. Carry out the SJB self-test. Is DTC B1317 present? Yes: INSTALL a new SJB . REFER to «Installation»(ref-355947-S38460867092010013000000) . TEST the system for normal operation. No: The system is operating normally at this time. The DTC may have been set previously during battery charging or while jump starting the vehicle.

  5. L5 CHECK THE SJB GROUND CIRCUITS Disconnect: Negative Battery Cable. Disconnect: SJB C2280d. Measure the resistance between the SJB C2280d-8, circuit GD126 (BK/WH), harness side and ground; and between the SJB C2280d-12, circuit GD126 (BK/WH), harness side and ground Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? Yes: CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to L6 . No: REPAIR the circuit for high resistance. CONNECT the negative battery cable. TEST the system for normal operation.
