Inspection and Verification
| WARNING | Always disconnect the battery ground cable at the battery before disconnecting the starter motor battery terminal lead. If a tool is shorted at the starter motor battery terminal, the tool can quickly heat enough to cause a skin burn. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury. |
Note. The anti-theft system must be functioning correctly before a logical starting system diagnosis can be carried out. Address anti-theft system concerns before continuing. Refer to ANTI-THEFT - PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (PATS) .
- Verify the customer concern by operating the starting system to duplicate the conditions.
- Remove the accessory drive belt. Refer to «ACCESSORY DRIVE»(ref-356599) . Verify the crankshaft and each of the components driven by the accessory drive belt rotate and are not seized or damaged.
- Inspect to determine if any of the following mechanical or electrical concerns apply. VISUAL INSPECTION TABLE Mechanical Electrical Starter motor Starter motor bolts Flexplate Battery Open fuse Battery Junction Box (BJB) fuse 10 (30A) Damaged wiring harness Starter relay Anti-theft system Loose or corroded connections
- If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
- If the cause is not visually evident, connect the scan tool to the Data Link Connector (DLC). NOTE: Make sure to use the latest scan tool software release.
- If the scan tool does not communicate with the VCM : check the VCM connection to the vehicle. check the scan tool connection to the VCM . refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(ref-356606) , No Power To The Scan Tool, to diagnose no power to the VCM . NOTE: The Vehicle Communication Module (VCM) LED prove out confirms power and ground from the DLC are provided to the VCM .
- If the scan tool does not communicate with the vehicle: verify the ignition is ON. The air bag warning indicator prove-out (other indicators may NOT prove ignition is ON) confirms ignition ON. If ignition does not turn ON, refer to «STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES»(ref-356610) to diagnose no power in RUN. refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(ref-356606) Inspection and Verification to establish a scan tool session (without the ignition ON). verify the scan tool operation with a known good vehicle.
- Carry out the network test. If the scan tool responds with no communication for one or more modules, refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(ref-356606) . If the network test passes, retrieve and record the Continuous Memory Diagnostic Trouble Codes (CMDTCs).
- Carry out the self-test diagnostics for the PCM.
- Turn the ignition OFF. The ignition must be OFF to perform a RFA module self-test.
- Carry out the self-test diagnostics for the RFA module (disregard RFA DTC B10D7:31 if 2 Intelligent Access (IA) keys are not in the vehicle during on-demand self test).
- If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, GO to the PCM DTC Table or GO to RFA Remote Function Actuator (RFA) module DTC Table (Vehicles With a Push-Button Start System). If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, GO to «SYMPTOM TABLE»(ref-356636-S01027500782010022500000) .

PINPOINT TEST C: OTIS DOES NOT OPERATE CORRECTLY (ALL 3.7L ENGINES)
- C1 CHECK THE PCM ONE-TOUCH START STATUS (OTS_STAT) PID Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: DataLogger - PCM. Monitor the OTS_STAT PID with the ignition switch in the RUN position. Is the OTIS PID enabled? Yes : GO to C2 . No : ENABLE One-Touch Integrated Start (OTIS). TEST the system for normal operation. If OTIS will not enable, INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to «ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS»(ref-356637) . TEST the system for normal operation.
- C2 CHECK THE PCM START INDICATED (START_KEY) PID Disconnect: Start Diode. NOTE: While performing this step, a DTC may be set. CLEAR the DTCs after all repairs are complete. Monitor the START_KEY PID while using a fused jumper to apply voltage to the start diode cell, circuit CDC35 (BU/WH). Does the PID change from OFF to ON? Yes : GO to C4 . No : GO to C3 .
- C3 CHECK CIRCUIT CDC35 (BU/WH) NOTE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector. Disconnect: Start Diode. Disconnect: PCM C175B. Measure the resistance between the start diode cell, circuit CDC35 (BU/WH), harness side and PCM C175B-9, circuit CDC35 (BU/WH), harness side. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? Yes : INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to «ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS»(ref-356637) . TEST the system for normal operation. No : REPAIR circuit CDC35 (BU/WH). TEST the system for normal operation.
- C4 CHECK THE PCM STARTER MOTOR CONTROL OUTPUT DETECTED (SMC_MON) PID Disconnect: Start Diode. NOTE: While performing this step, a DTC may be set. CLEAR the DTCs after all repairs are complete. Monitor the SMC_MON PID while using a fused jumper to apply voltage to the start diode cell, circuit CDC35 (BU/WH), within 1 second slide the voltage to the other side of the start diode cell, circuit CE336 (GN/WH), which will cause the engine to start. Does the PID change from OFF to ON? Yes : GO to C6 . No : GO to C5 .
- C5 CHECK THE CIRCUIT CE336 (GN/WH) BETWEEN THE BJB AND THE PCM NOTE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector. Ignition OFF. Disconnect: PCM C175B. Measure the resistance between the Battery Junction Box (BJB) starter relay pin 1, circuit CE336 (GN/WH), harness side and PCM C175B-35, circuit CE336 (GN/WH), harness side. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? Yes : INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to «ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS»(ref-356637) . TEST the system for normal operation. No : REPAIR circuit CE336 (GN/WH). TEST the system for normal operation.
- C6 CHECK THE PCM STARTER RELAY ENABLE (STRT_RLY) PID Monitor the STRT_RLY PID while using a fused jumper to apply voltage to the start diode cell, circuit CDC35 (BU/WH). NOTE: While performing this step, a DTC may be set. CLEAR the DTCs after all repairs are complete. Does the PID change from DISABLED to ENABLED? Yes : REPAIR circuit CDC12 (YE). TEST the system for normal operation. No : INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to «ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS»(ref-356637) . TEST the system for normal operation.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

- F1 CHECK THE STARTER MOUNTING Inspect the starter mounting bolts for looseness. Is the starter motor mounted correctly? Yes : GO to F2 . No : INSTALL the starter motor correctly. REFER to «STARTER MOTOR»(ref-356636-S20962314152010022500000) . TEST the system for normal operation.
- F2 CHECK FOR ENGINE NOISE Ignition OFF. Connect a remote starter switch between the starter solenoid B- and S-terminals. Engage the starter motor and verify the noise is due to the starter operation. Is the noise due to the starter motor engagement? Yes : GO to F3 . No : REFER to «ENGINE SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-356592) to continue diagnosis.
- F3 CHECK FOR UNUSUAL WEAR Remove the starter motor. Inspect the ring gear for damaged or worn teeth. Refer to «ENGINE - 3.7L»(ref-356582) and «ENGINE - 3.5L GTDI»(ref-356583) . Is the noise due to ring gear tooth damage? Yes : INSTALL a new flexplate ring gear. REFER to «ENGINE - 3.7L»(ref-356582) or «ENGINE - 3.5L GTDI»(ref-356583) . EXAMINE the starter pinion teeth. If damaged, INSTALL a new starter motor. REFER to «STARTER MOTOR»(ref-356636-S20962314152010022500000) . TEST the system for normal operation. No : INSTALL a new starter motor. REFER to «STARTER MOTOR»(ref-356636-S20962314152010022500000) . TEST the system for normal operation.
