ELECTRONIC REAR VIEW MIRROR
Note. If back-up light switch is defective or back-up lights are on, mirror will not operate.
Electronic Rear View Mirror Inoperative (Continental, Cougar, Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis, Mark VII, Thunderbird & Town Car)
- Check for blown fuse. If fuse is blown, replace and recheck mirror operation. If fuse blows again, check for short circuit. If fuse is okay, disconnect electrical connector from rear of mirror. Using a DVOM, check for battery voltage between circuits No. 298 (Purple/Orange wire) and 57 (Black wire).
- If voltage is zero, check for voltage between circuit No. 298 (Purple/Orange wire) and known good ground. If voltage exists, repair circuit No. 57 (Black wire). If battery voltage does not exist, repair circuit No. 298 (Purple/Orange wire) between mirror connector and fuse panel. Recheck mirror operation.
SIDE MIRRORS
Note. Manufacturer does not provide ONE MIRROR INOPERATIVE testing procedure for Escort, Probe and Tracer.
Side Mirrors Inoperative (Except Escort, Probe & Tracer)
- Check 15-amp courtesy lamp fuse. If fuse is okay, remove side mirror switch assembly. Use a DVOM to check for battery voltage between circuits No. 54 (Light Green/Yellow wire) and 57 (Black wire) of side mirror switch. If battery voltage is present, replace mirror switch.
- If voltage does not exist, check for voltage between circuit No. 54 (Light Green/Yellow wire) and known good ground. If voltage exists, repair circuit No. 57 (Black wire). If voltage does not exist after checking with known good ground, repair circuit No. 54 (Light/Green wire).
Scheme 13
- Check 15-amp radio fuse. If fuse is okay, go to next step. If fuse is blown, replace fuse. If fuse blows again, check for short to ground in Blue/Black wire of the side mirror switch connector. (Scheme 13)
- Disconnect side mirror switch connector. Turn ignition on. Using a DVOM, check for battery voltage on Blue/Black wire at side mirror switch connector. If voltage does not exist, repair Blue/Black wire between fuse panel and side mirror switch.
- If voltage is present, turn ignition off. Check for continuity between ground and Black wire of side mirror switch. If continuity is not present, repair Black wire between side mirror switch and ground. If continuity is present, see SIDE MIRROR SWITCH TEST under TESTING. Replace switch as necessary. If mirror switch is okay, see SIDE MIRROR MOTOR TEST.
Scheme 14
- Check 15-amp audio fuse. If fuse is okay, go to next step. If fuse is blown, replace fuse. If fuse blows again, check for short to ground in Green/White wire at side mirror switch connector. (Scheme 14)
- Turn ignition on. Using a voltmeter, check for battery voltage on Green/White wire at side mirror switch connector. If voltage does not exist, repair Green/White wire between fuse panel and side mirror switch.
- If voltage exists, check for continuity between ground and Black wire of side mirror switch. If continuity is not present, repair Black wire between side mirror switch and ground. If continuity is present, see «SIDE MIRROR SWITCH TEST»(ref-28321-S01325636712001010800000) under TESTING. Replace switch as necessary. If mirror switch is okay, see SIDE MIRROR MOTOR TEST.
One Mirror Inoperative (Except Escort, Probe & Tracer)
Remove door trim panel. Verify wiring harness is connected to motor. Connect test light between specified wires, and check for power in side mirror circuits by operating switch. See SIDE MIRROR SWITCH TEST under TESTING. If power does not exist, repair harness between switch and mirror connector. If power exists, replace motor assembly.
SIDE MIRROR GLASS & MOTOR
Note. On Escort, Tempo, Topaz and Tracer models, mirror motor and/or mirror glass must be replaced as an assembly. Refer to SIDE MIRROR ASSEMBLY under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. On Probe, mirror glass can be replaced if damaged. Mirror motor must be replaced with mirror housing.
