FLOOR JACK

WARNINGNever run the engine with one wheel off the ground, such as when changing a tire. The wheel still on the ground could cause the vehicle to move.
CAUTIONThe jack provided with the vehicle is intended to be used in an emergency for changing a deflated tire. To avoid damage to the vehicle, never use the jack to lift the vehicle for any other purpose. Refer to the Owner Literature when using the jack supplied with the vehicle. Under no circumstances should the vehicle ever be lifted by the front control arms, front I-braces, suspension arm brackets, rear stabilizer or differential housing. Severe damage to the vehicle could result. Do not attempt to use jack pressure on either the front bumper or the rear bumper of any vehicle. Damage to the bumper covers will occur.

HOIST

CAUTIONFollow hoist manufacturer instructions. DO NOT let hoist or adapters contact suspension, exhaust or steering components.

CHECKING PROCEDURE

To calculate ride height, measure and record dimension "C". (Scheme 3), (Scheme 4) and (Scheme 5). See RIDE HEIGHT SPECIFICATIONS table. If ride height does not meet specification, and no unusual load is present, check for damaged components or non-standard replacement suspension components.

RIDE HEIGHT SPECIFICATIONS

Front

Note. If the vehicle is equipped with hex head bolts in the lower control arm, new cam bolts and lock nuts must be installed before adjusting the caster and camber. If cam bolts are already installed, go to step 6 .

  1. Remove two bolts, one pushpin and the splash shield. (Scheme 6) Remove and discard the pinch bolt and disconnect the steering shaft, if necessary. Remove three steering gear lock nuts and bolts. (Scheme 7) Discard the lock nuts.
  2. Position two 4 x 4 in. pieces of wood between the No. 2 crossmember and the lifting device. (Scheme 8) Raise and support the front end. Remove and discard the front lower control arm nut and bolt.
  3. Install the caster adjustment cam bolt and a new lock nut. (Scheme 9) The bolt must be installed from the rear. Install the bolt with the cam lobe down. The cam must be seated between the cam guides on the No. 1 crossmember.
  4. Position the steering gear aside. Remove and discard the rear lower control arm nut and bolt. Loosely, install the camber adjustment cam bolt, a new lock nut and the I-brace bracket (if equipped). The bolt must be installed from the rear. (Scheme 10) Install the bolt with the cam lobe down. The cam must be seated in the groove in the No. 2 crossmember.
  5. Lower the front end. Install the steering gear, three bolts and new lock nuts. Tighten nuts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-162630-S17703635842004060700000). Connect the steering shaft and install a new pinch bolt, if removed. Tighten pinch bolt to specification.
  6. Loosen the tie rod jam nut. Reposition the bellows clamp, as necessary. Clean and lubricate the jam nut and front wheel spindle tie-rod threads. Do not allow the steering gear bellows to twist when the front wheel spindle tie-rod is rotated. Rotate the front wheel spindle tie-rod to adjust the toe.
  7. To aid in accurate camber and toe measurements, support the front suspension lower arm by hand while rotating the camber adjustment cam bolt. Loosen the camber adjustment cam (rear) nut. Rotate the camber adjustment cam bolt to adjust the camber. See «WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-162630-S33055634792004060700000).
  8. Repeat steps 6 and 7 until the correct camber and toe measurements are achieved. Do not tighten camber adjustment cam nut until the weight of the vehicle is resting on the wheel and tire assemblies. Tighten the camber adjustment cam nut to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-162630-S17703635842004060700000).
  9. Tighten the tie rod nut to specification. Ensure the bellows clamp is installed. Recheck the alignment settings. Follow the equipment manufacturer's instructions. Readjust the caster as necessary. Install the splash shield, one pushpin, and two bolts.

Rear

Rear camber is not adjustable. See WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS . If camber is not within specification, check for damaged suspension components, deteriorated bushings or distorted body mounting points.

Ensure steering wheel is centered, and maintains centered. Reposition the bellows clamps as necessary. Do not allow the steering gear bellows to twist when the front wheel spindle tie rod is rotated. Loosen tie rod end lock nuts. Clean and lubricate tie rod threads. Turn inner tie rod to adjust toe-in. See WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS . Tighten tie rod end lock nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Ensure bellows clamps are in place.

Hold rear tie rod end while loosening locking nuts. (Scheme 11) Rotate tie rod to obtain correct toe-in. See WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS. Tighten locking nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. Recheck toe-in.
