ALL MODELS
Shift interlock system is a 2-function electro/mechanical system which prevents free movement of gearshift lever. On models with column shift, a shift lock actuator is mounted on the steering column. On models with floor mounted gearshift lever, a shift lock actuator is mounted on ignition switch end of interlock cable. This actuator prevents ignition switch from being turned to LOCK position unless gearshift lever is in "P" position. Gearshift lever may not be moved from "P" position if ignition key is in RUN position unless brake pedal is depressed.
On Escort, Escort ZX2, Lincoln LS and Villager, a cable system between ignition switch and gearshift lever prevents ignition key from being removed from switch unless gearshift lever is in "P" position. It also prevents gearshift lever from being moved from "P" position when ignition switch is in LOCK position.
An electronic shift lock actuator, mounted at base of gearshift lever, locks gearshift lever in "P" position until ignition switch is in RUN position and brake pedal is depressed.
EMERGENCY OVERRIDE FUNCTION
Note. On models not listed, emergency override function can be performed by turning ignition switch to 1st position from OFF towards ON position. Apply brake pedal and attempt to move gearshift lever.
Contour, Cougar & Mystique
Ensure gearshift lever is locked in Park. Use a screwdriver or similar item as an unlocking lever and push backward on actuator and hold in position. (Scheme 50) If gearshift lever is moved back into "P" position, it will re-lock.
Scheme 50
Escort, Escort ZX2 & Focus
Ensure gearshift lever is locked in Park. Use a screwdriver to lift small access cover at upper right corner of shift bezel. Insert a screwdriver vertically into access hole and push downward to release lock lever. Ensure gearshift lever is released from Park.
ALL MODELS (EXCEPT ESCORT, ESCORT ZX2 & VILLAGER)
Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Ensure gearshift lever is in "P" position. Ensure gearshift lever may only be moved to "R" position when brake pedal is depressed. Ensure ignition switch cannot be turned to LOCK position with gearshift lever in "R" position. Move gearshift lever to "P" position and ensure ignition switch may be turned to LOCK position and key removed.
