DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES
- Make sure all NON-EEC problems are solved first. Loose wires, low compression, fouled plugs, etc. can cause problems that waste valuable servicing time.
- Connect test equipment (as described later in this article) to the engine.
- Perform Key On-Engine Off Self-Test for your engine. This checks input and output circuits. If any codes appear, refer to the proper test shown in the reference table for that engine. Start with the first code displayed. If the tests refer you to other checks, perform them as instructed.
- Perform the Computed Timing Check. This checks the system's spark timing ability.
- Do the Engine Running Self-Test. This is a system check with sensors and output devices. If any codes appear, refer to the proper test shown in the reference table.
- To check for intermittent problems, perform the Continuous Self-Test. This monitors the inputs for shorts and open circuits as you wiggle wires and connectors.
PREPARATION FOR TESTING
Correct test results for this system are dependent on the correct operation of several related non-EEC components and systems. All non-EEC problems should be corrected before attempting to diagnose the EEC system.
Before hooking up any equipment to diagnose the EEC system, make the following checks
- Verify the condition of the air cleaner and air ducting.
- Check all vacuum hoses for leaks, restrictions and proper routing.
- Check the EEC system wiring harness electrical connections for corrosion, loose or detached connectors, wires or terminals, and proper routing.
- Check the ECA, sensors and actuators for physical damage.
- Perform all necessary safety precautions to prevent personal injury or vehicle damage.
- Set parking brake and place shift lever in "P" for auto. trans., Neutral for man. trans. DO NOT move shift lever during testing unless specifically directed to do so.
- Turn off all lights and accessories, and make sure that vehicle doors are closed when making readings.
- Check coolant level and correct as necessary.
- Start engine and idle until upper radiator hose is hot and pressurized and throttle is off fast idle. Check for leaks around exhaust manifold, oxygen sensor and vacuum connections
- Turn ignition key off.
Note. If vehicle is towed in or is suspected of having intermittent problems, DO NOT turn the ignition key off. Diagnostic codes may be stored in the continuous testing memory.
READING SELF-TEST CODES
Service codes are transmitted to the Self-Test Output connector. They are shown as voltage pulses on a Digital Volt/Ohmmeter (DVOM), or as numbers on the STAR tester.
Key On-Engine Off (KOEO) Self-Test
The first code shown is the On Demand code, the second code is a Separator code and the third code is the Continuous code. The On Demand first digit is indicated by a pulse, then the needle drops to zero for 2 seconds, then the second digit of the code is displayed. After 6-9 seconds, the Separator code (single digit) will be displayed for 1/2 second. After 6-9 seconds, the first digit of the Continuous code will be displayed, the needle will drop to zero for 2 seconds, then the second digit of the Continuous code will display.
Key On Engine Running (KOER) Self-Test
The codes shown are an Engine ID code, a Dynamic Response code and an On Demand code. On Demand codes are the same as Continuous codes in Key On-Engine Off Self-Test. Dynamic Response code is the same as a Separator code in Key On-Engine Off Self-Test. The Engine ID code has no application in the field, and is for factory use only. The codes will be displayed in the same manner as Key On-Engine Off Self-Test codes.
EQUIPMENT HOOK-UP
With ignition off, connect a timing light to engine. Connect a jumper wire from the self-test input to ground. Connect a DC voltmeter set at the 0-20 Volt range, to the battery positive terminal and self-test output terminal No. 4. (Scheme 70)

TEST EQUIPMENT
The following equipment is recommended to diagnose and test EEC-IV systems. Some equipment is REQUIRED to perform tests. DO NOT attempt to test this system without proper equipment. Damage to vehicle components will result if improper equipment is used.
- Self-Test Automatic Read-Out (STAR) Tester. This tool is recommended, but not required. It is specially built for the EEC-IV system and is used to display the 2-digit service codes that are programmed into the control module.
- Analog Volt/Ohmmeter with 0-20V DC range. This can be used as an alternate to the STAR tester.
- Breakout Box. This is a jumper wire assembly which connects between the vehicle harness and the ECA. The Breakout Box is REQUIRED to perform certain tests on the system. Ford Motor Co. DOES NOT recommend using a DVOM to probe the ECA pins as permanent damage to the pins will result.
- Digital Volt/Ohmmeter (DVOM) with 10 meg-ohm minimum input impedance.
- Vacuum gauge with 0-30 in. Hg range, and resolution in the 1 Hg. range.
- Tachometer with 0-6000 RPM range, accuracy F 40 RPM and resolution within 20 RPM.
- Vacuum pump with 0-25 in. Hg range.
- Timing light.
- Spark tester. A modified spark plug with side electrode removed and alligator clip attached may be used.
- Fuel injection pressure gauge for all fuel injected models.
- Non-powered test light.
- Jumper wire about 15" long.
Note. A small, portable tester for 1983-84 models is available from Hickok Electrical Instrument Co., 10514 Dupont Ave., Cleveland, OH 44106. This tester (STAR; Self Test Automatic Readout) provides a built-in capability to locate intermittents within the EEC-IV system.
Connect voltmeter and insert jumper wire to self-test input terminal and output terminal No. 2. This activates the self-test. Turn ignition switch to "Run" position. DO NOT depress throttle during test. Observe and record On Demand and Continuous codes. When more than 1 code is displayed, always repair problems in the order that codes were displayed. Repair codes as follows

ON DEMAND DIAGNOSTIC CODES
Timing Check
Disconnect grounded jumper wire from self-test input. Start engine and reconnect grounded jumper wire to self-test input. Check timing within 2 minutes after display of last code. If timing is 27-33° BTDC, proceed to Engine Running Self-Test. If timing is not 27-33° BTDC, proceed to TEST Q - SPARK TIMING CHECK .
Note. If engine stalls while testing, proceed to TEST O - NO CODES, IMPROPER CODES , step 10).
This test checks sensors under actual operating conditions and at normal operating temperature. Any faults must be present at time of test to be detected.
Note. If engine will not start, perform Test A.
Connect jumper wire or STAR tester to activate test. This test will display an Engine ID code, a Dynamic Response code and an On Demand Service code. After a Dynamic Response code (single digit) is received, quickly press and release accelerator once only.
Deactivate the self-test. Start and run engine at more than 2000 RPM for 2 minutes. Turn engine off and wait 10 seconds. Activate self-test. Start engine. Test will proceed with Engine ID code, Dynamic Response code and Engine Running On Demand Service codes. If a 10 or 1 pulse occurs during Dynamic Response code, open throttle wide open momentarily. Record codes and proceed as follows

Continuous Test
- Codes shown in this test are intermittent service codes. Unless instructed otherwise, DO NOT disconnect any sensor with ignition on, or a service code may be stored.
- Verify that previous self-tests indicated a pass (code 11). If an On Demand code is detected during this test, repair it first, as some hard failures will set a code in the continuous test.
- Perform Key On-Engine Off Self-Test. When the first service code is appears, exit self-test by removing jumper wire from self-test input. This clears ECA of all codes stored in continuous memory.
- Check your list of Continuous codes that were recorded in Key On-Engine Off and Engine Running self-tests. Disregard any codes you already repaired. To confirm remaining codes, perform Continuous Monitor Test.

CONTINUOUS MONITOR TEST
Note. DO NOT activate Self-Test unless specifically instructed.
- This test monitors ECA inputs for shorts and opens. Self-test output will be activated when an intermittent fault is detected. A detected fault is indicated by a 10.5 volt or greater deflection of the volt/ohmmeter. One or both of the following modes may be used to find the intermittent fault: Key On-Engine Off - With self-test deactivated, turn ignition switch on. Engine Running - Activate self-test and perform Engine Running Self-Test. After service code output has finished, do not turn engine off or deactivate self-test. About 2 minutes after code 11 has been displayed, Continuous Monitor test will start. It will run until jumper or STAR tester is removed, or engine is turned off. NOTE: An alternate method of entering this test with engine running is to enter Engine Running test, exit, and re-enter Engine Running test. DO NOT turn engine off.
- Observe volt/ohmmeter while moving, wiggling, tapping the system harness, connectors and sensors. If an intermittent condition is created, the monitor will indicate this by storing a service code.
- Perform Key On-Engine Off Self-Test to retrieve codes. If any codes are indicated, go to proper test as shown in Continuous Test table. If no codes appear, the fault is not in a monitored EEC sensor circuit. EEC testing is complete. CONTINUOUS TEST RESULTS
HOW TO USE CIRCUIT TESTS
- DO NOT run any test unless codes have been set. Make sure all non-EEC related faults are corrected. DO NOT replace any part unless directed to do so. When more than 1 service code is received, start with lowest code first. NOTE: Procedures in the TESTING section of this article are not in absolute numerical order. Procedures not related to this engine have been removed to eliminate confusion.
- DO NOT measure voltage or resistance at ECA or connect any test lamps to it, unless specified. All measurements are made by probing the REAR of the connector. Isolate both ends of a circuit and turn ignition off whenever checking for shorts or continuity, unless specified.
- Disconnect solenoids and switches from harness before measuring continuity, resistance or applying 12 volts. Follow each step in order until fault is found. After any repairs, check all component connections and repeat Quick Test.
Output State Test
- These checks are specified in the testing charts. Output State Test is used to diagnose each actuator. Test is performed in the Key On-Engine Off Self-Test mode after service codes have been sent. DO NOT disable self-test, but momentarily depress throttle and release. All auxiliary EEC outputs will be activated at this time. Another throttle depression will turn them off.
- Connect DVOM to self-test output pin 4. Start the Key On-Engine Off Self-Test. When Continuous codes are completed, DVOM will read 0 volts. Depress accelerator to turn on actuators.
- Disconnect DVOM from pin 4 and connect to appropriate actuator. Measure voltage at actuator. Readings above 10.5 volts indicate actuators are on, readings below 2 volts indicate actuators are off. Each test will tell what action to take according to voltage shown on DVOM.
TEST A - NO START
Note. This condition may be caused by the terminals spreading open at the neutral safety switch connector. Follow this procedure: Locate and remove the neutral safety switch 4-way connector at the left side of the transmission. Check terminals for spreading condition. If necessary, insert small screwdriver between rubber connector and terminal close gap. If this does not correct the condition, proceed with TEST A.

- Try to start engine. If engine does not crank, check for excess fuel in cylinders (hydraulic lock) and check the starting/charging system. If engine cranks, but does not start or continue to run, proceed with test.
- Disconnect spark plug wire to any cylinder. Connect spark tester between plug wire and engine ground. Crank engine and check for spark. If spark is produced, go to step 13). If not, go to next step. Reconnect spark plug wire to plug.
- Remove high tension coil wire from distributor and install spark tester. Check for spark while cranking. If spark is produced, service or repair TFI ignition system. If no spark, go to next step. (Scheme 72): TFI Module Circuit Diagram
- Turn ignition off and wait for 10 seconds. Disconnect 60-pin connector at ECA. Inspect for damaged pins, corrosion, or loose wires. Repair as required. Install breakout box (timing switch in "Computed" position). Turn ignition on (engine off). With DVOM on 20 volt scale, measure voltage from box pin 37 to pin 40 and from box pin 57 to pin 60. If either reading less than 10.5 volts, perform Test B. If readings are 10.5 volts or greater, continue test.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. With DVOM on 200 ohm scale, measure between box pin 16 to TFI connector (ignition ground). If resistance is 5 ohms or greater, repair harness and repeat Quick Test. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
- Reconnect 60-pin connector at ECA. With breakout box still connected, set timing switch to "Dist" position. Try to start vehicle. If vehicle starts, go to step 10). If not, go to next step.
- Turn timing switch to "Computed" position. Set DVOM on 20 volt scale and measure from box pin 36 to chassis ground while cranking engine. If voltage is 3-6 volts, EEC system is okay. Service TFI ignition system. If voltage is less than 3 volts or greater than 6 volts, continue test.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect 60-pin connector at ECA. Disconnect TFI. With DVOM on 200,000 ohm scale, measure resistance from box pin 36 to pins 16, 20, 26, 40 and 60 in turn, for short to ground; from box pin 36 to pins 37 and 57 in turn, for short to power; from box pin 36 to pin 56 for short to PIP. If any reading is less than 10,000 ohms, repair short and repeat test if vehicle does not start. If all readings are 10,000 ohms or more, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Reconnect 60-pin harness at ECA (TFI still disconnected). With DVOM on 200 ohm scale, measure resistance from box pin 36 to pins 37 and 57 for short to power; from box pin 36 to pins 40 and 60 for short to ground. If any reading is less than 5 ohms, replace ECA and repeat Quick Test. If all readings are 5 ohms or more, continue test.
- With DVOM on 20 volt scale, measure voltage from box pin 56 to pin 16 while cranking engine. If voltage is 3-6 volts, remove breakout box and replace ECA. Repeat Quick Test. If voltage is less than 3 volts or more than 6 volts, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect 60-pin connector at ECA. With DVOM on 200 ohm scale, measure resistance from box pin 56 to PIP circuit of TFI connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or greater, repair open and repeat Quick Test. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, continue to next step.
- With ECA and TFI harnesses still disconnected and ignition off, set DVOM on 200,000 ohm scale. Measure resistance from box pin 56 to pins 16, 20, 40 and 60 in turn, for short to ground; from box pin 56 to pins 37 and 57 in turn, for short to power; from box pin 56 to pin 36 for short to spark output. If any resistance is less than 10,000 ohms, service PIP circuit. If all resistances are greater than 10,000 ohms, service TFI ignition system.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect 60-pin connector at ECA and check for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. Service as required. Install breakout box (timing switch at "Computed" position). Reconnect 60-pin connector at ECA. With DVOM on 20 volt scale, measure voltage from box pin 36 to chassis ground while cranking engine. If voltage is less than 3 volts or greater than 6 volts, go to step 10). If voltage is 3-6 volts, go to next step.
- Disconnect electrical connectors from both injectors. Connect a pressure gauge to Schrader valve on fuel rail. Note initial pressure reading. Observe pressure gauge while pressurizing fuel system. Pressurize system by turning ignition to "Run" position for 1 second, then off for 10 seconds. Repeat this procedure 5 times. Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Reconnect injectors. If pressure increased from initial reading, proceed to step 16). If pressure did not increase, proceed to next step.
- Locate fuel pump inertia switch in left rear of vehicle. Push button on inertia switch to reset. If switch will not reset, replace switch and repeat step 14). If button was on, go to «TEST M - FUEL PUMP CIRCUIT (INERTIA SWITCH)»(/lincoln/continental/vii-1982-1987/remont/testing-diagnostics/#50l-cfi-eec-iv-testing__test-m-fuel-pump-circuit). Observe pressure gauge while pressurizing fuel system. If fuel pressure increases, repeat Quick Test. If fuel pressure does not increase, go to «TEST M - FUEL PUMP CIRCUIT (INERTIA SWITCH)»(/lincoln/continental/vii-1982-1987/remont/testing-diagnostics/#50l-cfi-eec-iv-testing__test-m-fuel-pump-circuit).
- With injector wiring harnesses disconnected, pressurize fuel system and turn ignition off. Wait 2-5 seconds for pressure to stabilize. Fuel pressure should be 35-45 psi (2.5-3.0 kg/cm 2 ). If pressure is not correct, check fuel system. If pressure reading is correct, proceed to next step.
- Wait 2 minutes after reading pressure gauge in step 16). Note pressure drop. If pressure drops more than 4 psi (.3 kg/cm 2 ) in 2 minutes, check for hydrostatic lock or fouled spark plugs. If pressure drops less than 4 psi (.3 kg/cm 2 ) in 2 minutes, go to next step.
- Pressurize the fuel system and verify fuel quality (no water or air in fuel). Disable the electric fuel pump by disconnecting the fuel pump relay. Crank engine for 5 seconds. Take a fuel pressure reading at the end of the cranking period. If fuel pressure is 10-20 psi (.7-1.4 kg/cm 2 ), No Start problem is not related to the EEC system. If pressure was more or less than specified; or if pressure was correct and engine runs rough or misses, continue with testing. NOTE: A cold engine will have a greater pressure drop than a warm engine. Drop on a 200°F (93°C) engine is about 10 psi (.7 kg/cm 2 ) in 5 seconds. Drop on a 60°F (16°C) engine is about 20 psi (1.4 kg/cm 2 ) in 5 seconds. (Scheme 73): Injector Circuit Diagram
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Install breakout box. Using a non-powered 12 volt test lamp, connect lamp between box pins 37 and 58. Crank engine and note results. Then connect test lamp between box pins 37 and 59. Crank engine and note results.
- If test lamp does not glow on 1 or both tests, verify that battery voltage is recorded at box pin 37. If voltage is not present, repair wire or replace battery. If voltage is present, replace ECA and repeat Quick Test. If test lamp glows brightly on 1 or both tests, check injector circuits for short to ground. If no problem is found, replace ECA. If test lamp glows dimly on both tests, continue test.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Remove test lamp and disconnect fuel pump relay. Using a DVOM set on 20 volt scale, measure voltage between the same pins tested in step 19) while cranking engine. If the difference between the voltage readings is 1 volt or greater, disconnect ECA and inspect for corroded or damaged pins. Reconnect ECA and retest. If voltage readings still vary 1 volt or more, replace ECA and repeat Quick Test. If voltage difference is less than 1 volt, circuits are okay. Continue test.
- Reconnect fuel pump relay. Turn ignition off. Disconnect electrical connector at injector 2. Set DVOM on 20 ohm range and measure resistance between pins 58 and 37 of ECA connector. Record reading. Disconnect electrical connector at injector 1 and reconnect connector at injector 2. Measure resistance between pins 59 and 37. Record reading.
- If both readings in step 22) are not 2.0-3.5 ohms, check wiring harness on injector(s) and repair as required and repeat Quick Test. If wiring harness(es) is/are okay, replace injector(s). If both readings are correct, circuits are okay. Continue test.
- With ignition off, disconnect both injector electrical connectors and connect pressure gauge to Schrader valve. Pressurize fuel system. Connect electrical connector at injector 1. Crank engine for 5 seconds and record pressure reading immediately after end of crank cycle. Repeat procedure on injector 2. Pressurize fuel system after disconnecting injector and before connecting injector 2.
- If both readings in step 24) are not within 4 psi (.3 kg/cm 2 ) of each other, replace injector(s) that is/are incorrect. Reconnect injectors and repeat Quick Test. If both readings are acceptable, check for fuel contamination or other engine malfunctions and test again. If problem remains, disconnect ECA connector and check for corroded or damaged pins. Retest. If problem still exists, replace ECA and repeat Quick Test.
TEST B - VEHICLE BATTERY
- Turn ignition on (engine off). With DVOM on 20 volt scale, measure voltage across battery terminals. If more than 10.5 volts, go to next step. If less than 10.5 volts, service discharged battery.
- Ignition on (engine off). With DVOM on 20 volt scale, measure voltage between battery negative post to signal return circuit in self-test connector. If less than .5 volts, go to next step. If more than .5 volts, go to step 4).
- Connect breakout box, ECA connected. Turn ignition on (engine off). With DVOM on 20 volt scale, measure voltage from battery positive post to box pins 37 and 57. If both readings are less than .5 volt, go to «TEST C - REFERENCE VOLTAGE»(/lincoln/continental/vii-1982-1987/remont/testing-diagnostics/#50l-cfi-eec-iv-testing__test-c-reference-voltage) . If either is more than .5 volt, go to step 7).
- With breakout box and ECA connected, turn ignition on (engine off). With DVOM on 20 volt scale, measure voltage from battery negative post to box pins 40 and 60. If both readings are less than .5 volt, go to next step. If either is .5 volt or more, circuit has high resistance or open. Correct faulty ground circuit and repeat Quick Test.
- With breakout box and ECA connected, place DVOM on 200 ohm scale. Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Measure resistance between box pins 40 and 46, and between box pins 46 and 60. If both readings are less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If either is 5 ohms or more, disconnect ECA connector and inspect for damaged pins and corrosion. Repair as required and repeat Quick Test. If fault is still present, replace ECA and repeat Quick Test.
- With breakout box and ECA connected, place DVOM on 200 ohm scale. Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Measure resistance between box pin 46 and signal return circuit in self-test connector. If less than 5 ohms, system okay, repeat Quick Test. If 5 ohms or greater, excessive resistance in signal return circuit is indicated. Correct fault and repeat Quick Test.
- Place DVOM on 20 volt scale. With ECA connected, turn ignition on. Connect DVOM negative lead to battery negative post and make the following voltage checks with DVOM positive lead. Ignition must remain on for these checks. Keep alive power circuit at EEC power relay. If 10.5 volts or greater, continue checks. If less than 10.5 volts, check keep alive power and vehicle power circuits for shorts to ground. Check keep alive power circuit from power relay to battery positive post for opens. Ignition circuit at EEC power relay. If 10.5 volts or greater, continue checks. If less than 10.5 volts, check 10 amp fuse in location 18. Check for opens in ignition switch circuits. Service as required and repeat Quick Test. Ground circuit at EEC power relay. If less than .5 volt, go to next check. If .5 volt or more, correct open or ground in ground circuit. Repeat Quick Test. Vehicle power circuit at EEC power relay. If 10.5 volts or more, correct short to ground or open in vehicle power circuit from relay to ECA connector pins 37 and 57. Repeat Quick Test. If less than 10.5 volts, replace power relay and repeat Quick Test.
Battery Test Circuits. Scheme 74
TEST C - REFERENCE VOLTAGE
- Turn ignition off and connect breakout box (ECA connected). Turn ignition on. With DVOM on 20 volt scale, connect positive lead to box pin 37 and negative lead to signal return in self-test connector. If 10.5 volts or greater, go to next step. If less than 10.5 volts, go to «TEST B - VEHICLE BATTERY»(/lincoln/continental/vii-1982-1987/remont/testing-diagnostics/#50l-cfi-eec-iv-testing__test-b-vehicle-battery) .
- With ignition still on, measure voltage between box pins 26 and 46. If 4-6 volts; reference voltage okay, repeat Quick Test. If 4 volts or less, go to step 4). If 6 volts or more, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect ECA (breakout box connected). Place DVOM on 20 volt scale. Measure voltage from box pin 26, then box pin 46 to battery ground. If less than .5 volt, replace ECA and repeat Quick Test. If .5 volt or more, service short to battery power in EEC harness. Repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Reconnect ECA to breakout box. Disconnect throttle position sensor (TPS) from vehicle harness. Turn ignition on. With DVOM on 20 volt scale, measure voltage between box pins 26 and 46. If less than 4 volts, go to step 5). If 4 volts or more, replace TPS and repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Breakout box installed and ECA connected. Disconnect EGR valve position (EVP) sensor. Turn ignition on (engine off). With DVOM on 20 volt scale, measure voltage from box pin 26 to pin 46. If less than 4 volts, go to next step. If 4 volts or more, replace EVP sensor and repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect MAP sensor from harness. Turn ignition on. With DVOM on 20 volt scale, measure voltage between box pins 26 and 46. If less than 4 volts, go to next step. If more than 4 volts, replace MAP sensor and repeat Quick Test.
- With breakout box connected, disconnect ECA. Disconnect EVP, MAP and TPS sensors. Turn ignition off. With DVOM on 200 ohm scale, measure continuity from box pin 26 to pins 20, 40, 46 and 60 in turn. If all readings are less than 5 ohms, service short to ground in voltage reference circuit and repeat Quick Test. If any reading is 5 ohms or greater, go to next step.
- With breakout box connected, leave ECA and sensors listed in step 7) disconnected. Turn ignition off. With DVOM on 200 ohm scale, measure continuity of sensors listed in step 7) from box pin 26 to voltage reference circuit of each sensor harness connector. If all readings less than 5 ohms, reconnect sensors, replace ECA and repeat Quick Test. If any reading is 5 ohms or more, service open in voltage reference circuit and repeat Quick Test.
Reference Voltage Test Circuits. Scheme 75
TEST D - COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR
Note. To pass this test, coolant temperature must be 50-240°F (10-116°C) for Key On-Engine Off Self-Test and 180-240°F (82-116°C) for Engine Running Self-Test.
- Code 21. Start engine and bring to normal operating temperature. Check that upper radiator hose is hot and pressurized. Perform Quick Tests before continuing. If code 21 appears, go to next step. If no code 21, service other codes. If vehicle stalls, go to «TEST U - SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS»(/lincoln/continental/vii-1982-1987/remont/testing-diagnostics/#50l-cfi-eec-iv-testing__test-u-symptom-diagnosis) .
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor and inspect connectors for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. Place DVOM on 20 volt scale. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage at ECT harness connector between coolant signal circuit and signal return circuit. If 4-6 volts, go to step 5). If less than 4 volts, go to step 3). If more than 6 volts, go to «TEST C - REFERENCE VOLTAGE»(/lincoln/continental/vii-1982-1987/remont/testing-diagnostics/#50l-cfi-eec-iv-testing__test-c-reference-voltage) .
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. With harness disconnected at ECT sensor, disconnect 60-pin connector at ECA. Inspect for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. Connect breakout box and leave ECA disconnected. With DVOM on 200 ohm scale, measure resistance of ECT harness connector between coolant signal circuit and box pin 7. Then measure resistance of connector between signal return circuit and box pin 46. If both readings are less than 5 ohms, go to step 4). If either is 5 ohms or greater, repair open circuit. Remove breakout box, reconnect ECA and ECT sensor and repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition off. breakout box connected and ECA and ECT sensor disconnected. With DVOM on 200,000 ohm scale, measure resistance between box pin 7 and pins 40 and 60. If either reading is less than 10,000 ohms, service short circuit. Remove breakout box, reconnect ECA and ECT sensor and repeat Quick Test. If both readings are 10,000 ohms or more, go to next step.
- Warm engine to normal operating temperature, turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect harness at ECT sensor. With DVOM on 200,000 ohm scale, measure resistance of ECT sensor. In Key On-Engine Off Self-Test, reading should be 1300-7700 ohms. In Engine Running Self-Test, reading should be 1550-4550 ohms. If both are within limits, replace ECA, reconnect sensor and repeat Quick Test. If not within limits, replace ECT sensor and repeat Quick Test.
- Code 51. Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Reconnect 60-pin connector at ECA and remove breakout box. Disconnect ECT sensor harness and inspect for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. Insert jumper wire in ECT sensor harness between coolant signal circuit and signal return circuit. Run Key On-Engine Off Self-Test. If code 61 appears, replace ECT sensor, remove jumper wire, reconnect harness and repeat Quick Test. If no code 61, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Remove jumper. Disconnect 60-pin connector at ECA and inspect for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. Connect breakout box, leaving ECA disconnected. With DVOM on 200 ohm scale, measure resistance of ECT harness between coolant signal circuit and box pin 7 and signal return circuit and box pin 46. If either is 5 ohms or more, repair open in harness, remove breakout box, reconnect ECA and ECT sensor and repeat Quick Test. If both are less than 5 ohms, replace ECA, remove breakout, reconnect ECA and ECT sensor and repeat Quick Test.
- Code 61. Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect 60-pin connector at ECA and inspect for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. Perform Key On-Engine Off Self-Test. If code 51 appears, replace ECT and repeat Quick Test. If no code 51, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. With ECT disconnected, install breakout box and leave ECA disconnected. With DVOM on 200,000 ohm scale, measure resistance between box pin 7 to pins 40 and 60. If any less than 10,000 ohms, repair short in harness and repeat Quick Test. If both 10,000 ohms or more, replace ECA and repeat Quick Test.
- Continuous Monitor Code 21. Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Remove breakout box, reconnect ECA and ECT sensor and prepare vehicle for test drive (all test equipment removed). During test drive, try to simulate complaint and keep complaint active for at least 1 minute. After test drive, perform Key On-Engine Off Self-Test. If code 21 present, ensure thermostat is operating properly. If okay, replace ECT sensor and repeat Quick Test. If no code 21, unable to duplicate fault at this time. Continuous Code 21 test complete.
- Continuous Monitor Codes 51 and 61. Enter Continuous Monitor mode and observe volt/ohmmeter for fault indication while doing the following: Lightly tap on ECT sensor to simulate road shock. Wiggle sensor connector. If fault is indicated or voltage reading exceeds 5 volts, disconnect harness connectors at ECT and ECA. If connectors and terminals are okay, replace sensor and repeat Quick Test. If no fault indicated, go to next step.
- Observe volt/ohmmeter while performing the following: Beginning at ECT, wiggle, shake or bend small sections of harness while working way to dash panel. Then repeating process from panel to ECA. If fault is indicated, isolate and repair problem and repeat Quick Test. If no fault indicated, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect 60-pin connector at ECA and inspect connector and terminals for damage. If damaged, service as required and repeat Quick Test. If okay, fault cannot be duplicated at this time. Continuous Code 51 and 61 testing is complete.
Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor Circuits. Scheme 76
TEST E - MANIFOLD ABSOLUTE PRESSURE (MAP) SENSOR
- Code 22 (from Engine Running Self-Test only). Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Turn all accessories off. Check vacuum line to MAP sensor for leaks, restrictions and kinks. Check engine vacuum system for leaks. Repair as required and repeat Quick Test. If no faults or leaks, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect vacuum line from MAP sensor and install vacuum pump to sensor. Apply 20 in. Hg vacuum to sensor. If sensor holds vacuum, remove pump, reconnect sensor and go to next step. If sensor does not hold vacuum, replace MAP sensor and repeat Quick Test.
- If code 31 was recorded in Engine Running Self-Test, go to «TEST H - EGR VALVE POSITION (EVP) SENSOR»(/lincoln/continental/vii-1982-1987/remont/testing-diagnostics/#50l-cfi-eec-iv-testing__test-h-egr-valve-position) . If code 41 was recorded in Engine Running Self-Test, go to «TEST P - FUEL CONTROL TEST»(/lincoln/continental/vii-1982-1987/remont/testing-diagnostics/#50l-cfi-eec-iv-testing__test-p-fuel-control-test) . If code 31 and/or 41 not present, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect harness from MAP sensor and inspect. Service as required. With DVOM on 20 volt scale, turn ignition on. Measure voltage from voltage reference circuit to signal return circuit of MAP sensor harness. If 4-6 volts, go to next step. If less than 4 volts, go to step 6). If more than 6 volts, proceed to «TEST C - REFERENCE VOLTAGE»(/lincoln/continental/vii-1982-1987/remont/testing-diagnostics/#50l-cfi-eec-iv-testing__test-c-reference-voltage) .
- Ignition on and MAP sensor harness disconnected. With DVOM on 20 volt scale, measure voltage from MAP signal circuit to signal return circuit of MAP sensor harness. If less than 4 volts, go to next step. If 4 volts or more, go to step 8).
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Harness disconnected at MAP sensor. Disconnect 60-pin connector at ECA and inspect. Connect breakout box and leave ECA disconnected. With DVOM on 200 ohm scale, measure resistance from voltage reference circuit of MAP sensor harness to box pin 26; from MAP signal circuit of MAP sensor harness to box pin 45 and from signal return circuit of MAP sensor harness to box pin 46. If all less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If any 5 ohms or more, repair open circuit. Remove breakout box, reconnect ECA and MAP sensor and repeat Quick Test.
- Ignition off, breakout box installed, ECA and MAP sensor disconnected. With DVOM on 200 ohm scale, measure resistance from box pin 26 to pins 40, 46 and 60 in turn. Then measure resistance from box pin 45 to pins 40, 46 and 60 in turn. If any less than 100 ohms, repair short circuit. Remove breakout box, reconnect ECA and MAP sensor and repeat Quick Test. If all readings are 100 ohms or more, go to step 9).
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect 60-pin connector at ECA and inspect. Connect breakout box and leave ECA disconnected. Harness disconnected at MAP sensor. With DVOM on 200,000 ohm scale, measure resistance from box pin 45 to pins 26, 37 and 57 in turn. If any reading less than 10,000 ohms, repair short circuit. Remove breakout box, reconnect ECA and MAP sensor and repeat Quick Test. If all readings 10,000 ohms or more, go to next step.
- With ignition off, remove breakout box and reconnect ECA. Connect MAP sensor harness connector and vacuum line to a substitute MAP sensor. Perform Engine Running Self-Test. If code 22 present, replace ECA. Connect vacuum line and harness to original MAP sensor and repeat Quick Test. If no code 22, install substitute MAP sensor and repeat Quick Test.
- Code 72. Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Remove vacuum supply line at MAP sensor and tee in vacuum gauge. Perform Engine Running Self-Test while observing vacuum gauge. If vacuum decrease is 9 in. Hg or more and code 72 not present, disconnect vacuum gauge and service other codes as required. If vacuum decrease is 9 in. Hg or more and code 72 present, replace MAP sensor and repeat Quick Test. If vacuum decrease is less than 9 in. Hg, go to next step.
- Check vacuum lines for proper routing. Check MAP sensor for kinks or blockage. If vacuum lines are okay, EEC system operating properly; check engine for cause of vacuum loss. If vacuum lines are not okay, repair as required and repeat step 10).
- Continuous Monitor Code 22. Disconnect vacuum line at MAP sensor and install vacuum pump. Slowly apply 25 in. Hg vacuum to sensor, then slowly bleed off vacuum. Enter Continuous Monitor mode and observe volt/ohmmeter for fault indication while doing the following: Lightly tap on MAP sensor to simulate road shock. Wiggle sensor connector. If fault is indicated, disconnect harness connectors at MAP and ECA. If connectors and terminals are okay, replace sensor and repeat Quick Test. If no fault indicated, go to next step.
- Observe volt/ohmmeter while performing the following: Beginning at MAP, wiggle, shake or bend small sections of harness while working way to dash panel. Then repeating process from panel to ECA. If fault is indicated, isolate and repair problem and repeat Quick Test. If no fault indicated, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect 60-pin connector at ECA and inspect connector and terminals for damage. If damaged, service as required and repeat Quick Test. If okay, fault cannot be duplicated at this time. Continuous Code 22 testing is complete.
Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor Circuit. Scheme 77
TEST F - THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR (TPS)
- Code 23 (from Key On-Engine Off Self-Test). Before continuing with test, lightly press throttle lever toward actuator tip of idle speed motor while performing Key On-Engine Off Self-Test. If code 23, go to step 3). If no code 23, TPS is a little out of adjustment. DO NOT adjust TPS, EEC system is operating properly.
- Code 23 (from Engine Running Self-Test). Before continuing with test, check for code 31 and/or 41 after performing Engine Running Self-Test. If code 31, go to «TEST H - EGR VALVE POSITION (EVP) SENSOR»(/lincoln/continental/vii-1982-1987/remont/testing-diagnostics/#50l-cfi-eec-iv-testing__test-h-egr-valve-position) . If code 41, go to «TEST P - FUEL CONTROL TEST»(/lincoln/continental/vii-1982-1987/remont/testing-diagnostics/#50l-cfi-eec-iv-testing__test-p-fuel-control-test) . If no code 31 and/or 41, go to next step.
- Inspect throttle body and throttle linkage for binding. Check that throttle linkage is at mechanical closed throttle. Check for binding speed control linkage and vacuum line or electrical harness interference. If throttle is not stuck, go to next step. If stuck, repair as required and repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect TPS and inspect for damaged pins, corrosion, and loose wires. Repair as required. Perform Key On-Engine Off Self-Test and record codes. If code 63, replace TPS and repeat Quick Test. If no code 63, replace ECA and repeat Quick Test.
- Code 53. Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect TPS and inspect. With DVOM on 20 volt scale, connect test leads to battery positive terminal and signal return circuit of TPS harness. If voltage is 10 volts or more, go to next step. If less than 10 volts, go to step 8).
- Ignition off, TPS disconnected and DVOM on 20 volt scale. Connect test leads to TPS harness between throttle position signal circuit and signal return circuit. Turn ignition on and note voltage. If less than 4 volts, go to next step. If 4 volts or more, go to step 9).
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. With TPS disconnected, perform Key On-Engine Off Self-Test. If code 63 appears, replace TPS and repeat Quick Test. If no code 63, replace ECA and repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. With TPS disconnected, set DVOM on 200 ohm scale. Disconnect 60-pin connector at ECA and inspect for damage. Connect breakout box and leave ECA disconnected. Check continuity of TPS harness between signal return circuit and box pin 46. If less than 5 ohms, replace ECA and repeat Quick Test. If 5 ohms or more, repair open circuit and repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. With same connections as in step 8), set DVOM on 200,000 ohm scale. Measure resistance between box pin 47 to pins 26 and 57. If either is less than 10,000 ohms, repair short in harness and repeat Quick Test. If both 10,000 ohms or more, replace ECA and repeat Quick Test.
- Code 63. ECA connected and breakout box disconnected. Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect TPS and inspect. Place DVOM on 20 volt scale. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage of TPS harness from voltage reference circuit to throttle position circuit. If reading is 4-6 volts, go to next step. If less than 4 volts, go to step 13). If 6 volts or more, go to «TEST C - REFERENCE VOLTAGE»(/lincoln/continental/vii-1982-1987/remont/testing-diagnostics/#50l-cfi-eec-iv-testing__test-c-reference-voltage) .
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. TPS disconnected. Disconnect 60-pin connector at ECA, inspect and repair as required. With DVOM on 200,000 ohm scale, connect 1 lead to throttle position signal circuit of TPS harness and other lead to ground. If reading less than 10,000 ohms, repair short circuit and repeat Quick Test. If 10,000 ohms or more, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. TPS disconnected. Insert jumper wire into TPS harness between voltage reference circuit and throttle position signal circuit. Perform Key On-Engine Off Self-Test. If code 53, replace throttle position sensor and repeat Quick Test. If no code 53, replace ECA.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect 60-pin connector at ECA and inspect. Connect breakout box and connect ECA to breakout box (TPS disconnected). With DVOM on 200 ohm scale, measure continuity of TPS harness from throttle position signal circuit to box pin 47 and from voltage reference signal circuit to box pin 26. If either is 5 ohms or more, repair circuit, reconnect TPS, remove breakout box and repeat Quick Test. If less than 5 ohms, replace ECA, reconnect TPS, remove breakout box and repeat Quick Test.
- Code 73. Code 73 indicates sensor did not exceed 25 percent of its rotation during Engine Response Check. Turn ignition off. Connect breakout box (TPS and ECA connected). With DVOM on 20 volt scale, measure voltage between box pins 47 and 46. Perform Engine Running Self-Test. If DVOM exceeds 3.5 volts during wide open throttle of Engine Response Check, replace ECA and repeat Quick Test. If less than 3.5 volts, verify TPS is properly mounted. If mounting is okay, replace TPS and repeat Quick Test.
- Continuous code 53. Using Continuous Monitor Mode, observe volt/ohmmeter for fault indication while doing the following: Move throttle slowly to wide open position. Slowly release throttle to closed position and lightly tap on TPS to simulate road shock. Wiggle TPS harness connector. If a fault is indicated, go to next step. If no fault indicated, go to step 19).
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect 60-pin connector at ECA and inspect. Connect breakout box and reconnect ECA. With DVOM on 20 volt scale, connect leads between box pins 47 and 46. Turn ignition on. While observing DVOM, repeat step 15). If fault is indicated below 4.25 volts, disconnect and inspect harness connectors. If okay, replace TPS and repeat Quick Test. If fault does not occur, TPS overtravel may have caused Continuous Code 53. Sensor service not required. Proceed to next step to verify harness integrity.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Remove breakout box, reconnect ECA and TPS. Watch volt/ohmmeter while doing the following: Beginning at TPS, wiggle, shake or bend small sections of harness while working way to dash panel. Then repeating process from panel to ECA. If fault is indicated, isolate and repair problem and repeat Quick Test. If no fault indicated, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect 60-pin connector at ECA and inspect both harness connector and ECA connector for damage or faults. If damaged, repair as required and repeat Quick Test. If no damage or fault, unable to duplicate fault at this time. Continuous Code 53 test complete.
- Continuous Monitor Code 63. Using Continuous Monitor Mode, observe volt/ohmmeter for fault indication while doing the following: Move throttle slowly to wide open position. Slowly release throttle to closed position and lightly tap on TPS to simulate road shock. Wiggle TPS harness connector. If a fault is indicated, disconnect and inspect harness connectors. If connectors and terminals okay, replace TPS and repeat Quick Test. If no fault indicated, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Watch volt/ohmmeter while doing the following: Beginning at TPS, wiggle, shake or bend small sections of harness while working way to dash panel. Then repeating process from panel to ECA. If fault is indicated, isolate and repair problem and repeat Quick Test. If no fault indicated, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect 60-pin connector at ECA and inspect for damage or fault. If terminals and pins are damaged, repair as required and repeat Quick Test. If no damage, fault cannot be duplicated at this time. Continuous Code 63 test complete.
Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) Circuit. Scheme 78
TEST G - AIR CHARGE TEMPERATURE (ACT) SENSOR
Note. Ambient air temperature must be greater than 50°F (10°C) for this test.
- Code 24. For vehicles with ACT sensor mounted in intake manifold, go to next step. On all other models, if sensor is properly mounted in air cleaner, go to next step. If sensor is not properly mounted, install properly and repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect harness at ACT and check for damaged pins or corrosion. Repair as required. Turn ignition on (engine off). With DVOM on 20 volt scale, measure voltage from ACT signal circuit and signal return circuit of sensor harness. If reading is 4-6 volts, go to step 5). If reading is less than 4 volts, go to next step. If reading is greater than 6 volts, go to «TEST C - REFERENCE VOLTAGE»(/lincoln/continental/vii-1982-1987/remont/testing-diagnostics/#50l-cfi-eec-iv-testing__test-c-reference-voltage) .
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Harness disconnected at ACT sensor. Disconnect 60-pin connector at ECA. Connect breakout box and leave ECA disconnected. With DVOM on 200 ohm scale, measure resistance from box pin 26 to ACT signal circuit of sensor connector. Then measure resistance from box pin 46 to signal return circuit of sensor connector. If both readings less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If either reading 5 ohms or more, repair open circuit and repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition off. Breakout box connected and ECA and ACT disconnected. With DVOM on 200,000 ohm scale, measure resistance from box pin 25 to pins 40, 46 and 60 in turn. If any reading less than 10,000 ohms, repair short circuits and repeat Quick Test. If all readings 10,000 ohms or more, go to next step.
- Remove breakout box and reconnect all connectors. Warm engine to normal operating temperature. Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect harness at ACT sensor. With DVOM on 200,000 ohm scale, measure resistance of sensor. If 1100-58,000 ohms (at about 50°F/10°C), go to next step. If less than 1100 ohms or more than 58,000 ohms, check heat stove duct valve operation. If duct valve operation is okay, replace sensor and repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition off. With harness disconnected at ACT sensor, start and run engine for 2 minutes. With DVOM on 200,000 ohm scale, measure resistance of sensor while engine is running. If reading is 2400-29,000 ohms, replace ECA and repeat Quick Test. If reading is less than 2400 ohms or greater than 29,000 ohms, check heat stove duct valve operation. If duct valve operation is okay, replace sensor and repeat Quick Test.
- Code 54. Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect harness at ACT sensor and inspect for damage. Repair as required. Insert jumper wire between ACT signal circuit and signal return circuit of harness. Perform Key On-Engine Off Self-Test. If code 64 present, replace sensor and repeat Quick Test. If no code 64, remove jumper wire and go to next step.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. ACT connector disconnected. Disconnect 60-pin connector at ECA and inspect for damage. Repair as required. Connect breakout box and leave ECA disconnected. With DVOM on 200 ohm scale, measure resistance between box pin 25 and ACT signal circuit of ACT harness. Then measure between box pin 46 and signal return circuit of ACT harness. If both readings are less than 5 ohms, replace ECA and repeat Quick Test. If either reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open circuit and repeat Quick Test.
- Code 64. Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect harness at ACT sensor and inspect. Repair as required. Perform Key On-Engine Off Self-Test. If code 54, replace ACT sensor and repeat Quick Test. If no code 54, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Harness disconnected at ACT sensor. Disconnect 60-pin connector at ECA and inspect. Repair as required. Connect breakout box and leave ECA disconnected. With DVOM on 200,000 ohm scale, measure resistance from box pin 25 to pins 40, 46 and 60 in turn. If any reading less than 10,000 ohms, repair short circuit and repeat Quick Test. If all readings 10,000 ohms or more, replace ECA and repeat Quick Test.
- Continuous codes 54 and 64. Breakout box disconnected and ECA and ACT connected. Enter Continuous Monitor mode and observe volt/ohmmeter for fault indication while doing the following: Lightly tap on ACT sensor to simulate road shock. Wiggle sensor connector. If fault is indicated, disconnect harness connectors at ACT and ECA. If connectors and terminals are okay, replace sensor and repeat Quick Test. If no fault indicated, go to next step.
- Observe volt/ohmmeter while performing the following: Beginning at ACT, wiggle, shake or bend small sections of harness while working way to dash panel. Then repeating process from panel to ECA. If fault is indicated, isolate and repair problem and repeat Quick Test. If no fault indicated, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect 60-pin connector at ECA and inspect connector and terminals for damage. If damaged, service as required and repeat Quick Test. If okay, fault cannot be duplicated at this time. Continuous Code 22 testing is complete.
Air Charge Temperature (ACT) Sensor Circuit. Scheme 79
TEST H - EGR VALVE POSITION (EVP) SENSOR
- Code 31. Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect and plug EGR vacuum line at EGR valve. Perform Engine Running Self-Test. If code 31, go to next step. If no code 31, but codes 32 and/or 34 present, go to step 9).
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. EGR vacuum line disconnected and plugged at EGR valve. Disconnect harness connector at EGR valve position (EVP) sensor and inspect terminals for damage. Repair as required. With DVOM on 200,000 ohm scale, measure resistance from EVP signal circuit to voltage reference circuit at EVP sensor. Then measure resistance from signal return circuit to voltage reference circuit at sensor. If both readings are 100-5500 ohms, go to next step. If either reading is less than 100 ohms or more than 5500 ohms, replace sensor and repeat Quick Test.
- Ignition off, EGR vacuum line disconnected and plugged and harness disconnected at EVP sensor. Connect vacuum pump to EGR valve. With DVOM on 200,000 ohm scale, measure resistance from EVP signal circuit to voltage reference circuit at EVP sensor while gradually increasing vacuum to 10 in. Hg. If reading gradually decreases from no more than 5500 ohms to no less than 100 ohms as vacuum is increased, go to next step. If reading is less than 100 ohms or more than 5500 ohms as vacuum is increased, replace sensor and repeat Quick Test. If reading does not decrease or sensor does not hold vacuum, go to step 12).
- Turn ignition on (engine off). EGR vacuum line disconnected and plugged and harness disconnected at EVP sensor. With DVOM on 20 volt scale, measure voltage from voltage reference circuit to signal return circuit at sensor harness. If reading is 4-6 volts, go to next step. If reading is less than 4 volts, go to step 7). If reading is greater than 6 volts, go to «TEST C - REFERENCE VOLTAGE»(/lincoln/continental/vii-1982-1987/remont/testing-diagnostics/#50l-cfi-eec-iv-testing__test-c-reference-voltage) .
- Ignition on (engine off). Reconnect EGR vacuum line at EGR valve and leave harness disconnected. With DVOM on 20 volt scale, measure voltage from voltage reference circuit to EVP signal circuit at sensor harness. If reading is 4-6 volts, go to next step. If reading is less than 4 volts, go to step 7).
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Harness disconnected at EVP sensor. Disconnect 60-pin connector at ECA and inspect for damaged terminals. Repair as required. With DVOM on 200,000 ohm scale, measure resistance from EVP signal circuit to signal return circuit at sensor harness and from EVP signal circuit to battery negative terminal. If either reading is less than 10,000 ohms, repair short circuit and repeat Quick Test. If both readings are 10,000 ohms or more, replace ECA and repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Harness disconnected at EVP and ECA. Connect breakout box and leave ECA disconnected. With DVOM on 200 ohm scale, measure continuity from box pin 46 to signal return circuit of EVP harness; from box pin 26 to voltage reference circuit of EVP harness and from box pin 27 to EVP signal circuit of EVP harness. If all readings less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If any reading 5 ohms or more, repair open circuit and repeat Quick Test.
- Ignition off, EVP harness disconnected, breakout box installed and ECA disconnected. With DVOM on 200,000 ohm scale, measure resistance from box pin 27 to pins 37 and 57. If either reading is less than 10,000 ohms, repair short circuit and repeat Quick Test. If both readings are 10,000 ohms or more, replace ECA and repeat Quick Test.
- Codes 32, 33 and 34. Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Enter Output State Check and perform Key On-Engine Off Self-Test until end of Continuous code display. DVOM will indicate zero volts. Depress and release throttle and observe DVOM. If DVOM registered high voltage, remain in Output State Check and go to next step. If DVOM did not register high voltage, depress throttle to wide open position and release. If voltage still does not register high reading, go to «TEST O - NO CODES, IMPROPER CODES»(/lincoln/continental/vii-1982-1987/remont/testing-diagnostics/#50l-cfi-eec-iv-testing__test-o-no-codes-improper) , step 13).
- Turn ignition on (engine off). Remain in Output State Check. Disconnect and plug vacuum line at bottom port of EGR control solenoid and connect vacuum pump. Using a "Tee", connect vacuum gauge in top line at EGR valve. Disconnect but DO NOT plug vacuum vent line at EGR vent solenoid. Apply vacuum and observe vacuum gauge while depressing and releasing throttle (cycling outputs on and off). If vacuum output cycles on and off in less than 2 seconds, reconnect vacuum lines and go to next step. If vacuum output does not cycle on and off in less than 2 seconds, replace solenoid assembly and repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Remove all test equipment and reconnect all vacuum lines. Check EEC system vacuum lines for proper routing, leaks and obstructions. Repair as required. If vacuum lines are okay, service EGR system.
- Ignition off and harness disconnected at EVP sensor. Remove EVP sensor from EGR valve. With DVOM on 200,000 ohm scale, measure resistance from signal return circuit to voltage reference circuit at EVP sensor. Observe DVOM while slowly pushing EVP sensor shaft inward. If reading smoothly decreases from no more than 5500 ohms to no less than 100 ohms, replace EGR valve assembly and repeat Quick Test. If reading does not decrease smoothly or changes suddenly, replace EVP sensor and repeat Quick Test.
- Code 35 (RPM too low for EGR test). Before continuing, check for codes 12 and 13. If code 12 or 13 present, go to «TEST Q - SPARK TIMING CHECK»(/lincoln/continental/vii-1982-1987/remont/testing-diagnostics/#50l-cfi-eec-iv-testing__test-q-spark-timing-check) . If no code 12 or 13, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Install tachometer and perform Engine Running Self-Test while maintaining engine speed at 1500 RPM. Record Engine Running service codes. If code 35 present, replace ECA and repeat Quick Test. If no code 35, repeat Quick Test and repair codes as required.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect EVP sensor and inspect harness and connector terminals. Repair as required. Turn ignition on (engine off). With DVOM on 20 volt scale, measure voltage from voltage reference circuit at sensor harness to battery ground. If reading is 4-6 volts, go to next step. If reading is less than 4 volts, go to step 7). If reading is 6 volts or more, go to «TEST C - REFERENCE VOLTAGE»(/lincoln/continental/vii-1982-1987/remont/testing-diagnostics/#50l-cfi-eec-iv-testing__test-c-reference-voltage) .
- Ignition on and EVP sensor disconnected. With DVOM on 20 volt scale, measure voltage from voltage reference circuit to signal return circuit at sensor harness. If reading is 4-6 volts, go to next step. If reading is less than 4 volts, repair open circuit and repeat Key On-Engine Off Self-Test.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect 60-pin connector at ECA and inspect. Repair as required. Connect breakout box and reconnect ECA. Connect EVP sensor. Turn ignition on (engine off). With DVOM on 20 volt scale, measure voltage from box pin 27 to pin 46. If less than .5 volt, go to next step. If 1.25 volt or greater, go to step 21).
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect ECA and EVP sensor. Breakout box installed. With DVOM on 200 ohm scale, measure resistance from box pin 27 to pins 20, 40, 46 and 60 in turn. If 5 ohms or more, go to next step. If less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in EVP signal circuit and repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition off. Breakout box installed and ECA and EVP sensor disconnected. With DVOM on 200 ohm scale, measure resistance from box pin 27 to EVP signal circuit at sensor harness. If 5 ohms or more, repair open in EVP signal circuit and repeat Quick Test. If less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Replace EVP sensor with known good sensor and reconnect harness. Remove breakout box and reconnect ECA. Perform Key On-Engine Off Self-Test. If code 31 present, replace ECA and reinstall original EVP sensor. If no code 31, testing is complete.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect 60-pin connector at ECA and connect breakout box. Leave ECA disconnected. Disconnect EVP sensor. With DVOM on 200 ohm scale, measure resistance from box pin 27 to pins 26, 37 and 57 in turn. If 5 ohms or more, go to next step. If less than 5 ohms, repair short to power and repeat Key On-Engine Off Self-Test.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Connect electrical harness to a known good EVP sensor and EGR valve assembly. Remove breakout box and reconnect ECA. Perform Key On-Engine Off Self-Test. If code 31, replace ECA, reconnect original EVP sensor and EGR valve assembly and repeat Quick Test. If no code 31, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Install original EVP sensor and connect harness. Perform Key On-Engine Off Self-Test. If code 31, install new EVP sensor. If no code 31, testing complete.
- Continuous Code 31. Disconnect vacuum line at EGR valve and install vacuum pump. Very slowly apply 6 in. Hg vacuum to sensor, then slowly bleed off vacuum. Enter Continuous Monitor mode and observe volt/ohmmeter for fault indication while doing the following: Lightly tap on EVP sensor to simulate road shock. Wiggle sensor connector. If fault is indicated, go to next step. If no fault indicated, go to step 26).
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect 60-pin connector at ECA and inspect. Repair as required. Connect breakout box and reconnect ECA. With volt/ohmmeter still connected to self-test output as in step 24), connect DVOM between box pin 27 and pin 46. Turn ignition on (engine off). With DVOM on 20 volt scale, observe DVOM while repeating step 24). If fault occurs below 4.25 volts, disconnect and inspect harness at EVP sensor. If connector and terminals are okay, replace EVP sensor and repeat Quick Test. If fault does not occur below 4.25 volts, EGR valve "overshoot" may have caused code 31. Sensor service not required. Go to next step to verify harness integrity.
- Observe volt/ohmmeter while doing the following: Beginning at EVP, wiggle, shake or bend small sections of harness while working way to dash panel. Then repeating process from panel to ECA. If fault is indicated, isolate and repair problem and repeat Quick Test. If no fault indicated, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect 60-pin connector at ECA and inspect connector and terminals for damage. If damaged, service as required and repeat Quick Test. If okay, fault cannot be duplicated at this time. Continuous Code 31 testing is complete.
EGR Valve Position (EVP) Sensor Circuit. Scheme 80
TEST I - THERMACTOR OUTPUT CIRCUIT CHECK
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect harness at TAB and TAD solenoids. With DVOM on 200 ohm scale, measure resistance of TAB and TAD solenoids. If both readings 50-100 ohms, reconnect solenoids and go to next step. If either reading less than 50 ohms or more than 100 ohms, replace TAB/TAD solenoid assembly and repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition on (engine off). With DVOM on 20 volt scale, connect positive lead to vehicle power circuit of TAB solenoid and negative lead to good ground. Repeat test on TAD solenoid. If both readings 10.5 volts or more, go to next step. If either reading less than 10.5 volts, repair open circuit and repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect 60-pin connector at ECA and inspect. Repair as required. Connect breakout box and leave ECA disconnected. With DVOM on 200 ohm scale, measure continuity from box pin 51 to TAB circuit at TAB harness. Then measure from box pin 11 to TAD circuit at TAD harness. If both readings less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If either reading 5 ohms or more, repair open circuit and repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Breakout box installed and ECA and TAB/TAD solenoid disconnected. With DVOM on 200,000 ohm scale, measure resistance from box pin 51 to pins 37 and 57. Then from box pin 11 to same pins. If all readings 10,000 ohms or more, go to next step. If any reading less than 10,000 ohms, repair short to power and repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Breakout box installed and ECA and TAB/TAD solenoid disconnected. With DVOM on 200,000 ohm scale, measure resistance from box pin 51 to pins 40, 46 and 60 in turn. Then from box pin 11 to same pins. If all readings less than 10,000 ohms, repair short to ground and repeat Quick Test. If any reading 10,000 ohms or more, replace ECA and repeat Quick Test.
Thermactor Circuit. Scheme 81
TEST J - EGR VENT & EGR CONTROL VALVE OUTPUT CIRCUIT CHECK
- Codes 83 and 84. Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect harness at EGR vent solenoid and EGR control solenoid. With DVOM on 200 ohm scale, measure resistance of solenoids. If both readings are 30-70 ohms, reconnect solenoids and go to next step. If either reading is less than 30 ohms or greater than 70 ohms, replace solenoid assembly and repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition on (engine off). With DVOM on 20 volt scale, connect positive lead to vehicle power circuit of EGR vent solenoid harness and negative lead to good ground. Repeat test on EGR control solenoid harness. If both readings greater than 10.5 volts, go to next step. If either reading less than 10.5 volts, repair open circuit and repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect 60-pin connector at ECA and inspect. Repair as required. Connect breakout box and leave ECA disconnected. With DVOM on 200 ohm scale, measure continuity from box pin 33 to EGR vent circuit at EGR vent solenoid harness. Then measure from box pin 52 to EGR control circuit at EGR control solenoid harness. If both readings less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If either reading 5 ohms or more, repair open circuit and repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect harness at EGR vent solenoid and EGR control solenoid. Breakout box installed and ECA disconnected. With DVOM on 200,000 ohm scale, measure resistance from box pin 33 to pins 37 and 57. Then measure from box pin 52 to same pins. If any reading less than 10,000 ohms, repair short to power and repeat Quick Test. If any reading 10,000 ohms or more, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Breakout box installed and ECA and EGR vent and EGR control solenoids disconnected. With DVOM on 200,000 ohm scale, measure resistance from box pin 33 to pins 40, 46 and 60 in turn. Then measure from box pin 52 to same pins. If any reading less than 10,000 ohms, repair short to ground and repeat Quick Test. If any reading 10,000 ohms or more, replace ECA and repeat Quick Test.
EGR Vent Solenoid & EGR Control Solenoid Circuits. Scheme 82
TEST K - CANISTER PURGE OUTPUT CIRCUIT CHECK
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect harness connector at canister purge solenoid. With DVOM on 200 ohm scale, measure solenoid resistance. If reading is 40-90 ohms, reconnect solenoid and go to next step. If reading is less than 40 ohms or more than 90 ohms, replace solenoid and repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition on (engine off). With DVOM on 20 volt scale, connect positive lead to vehicle power circuit on back of solenoid connector and negative lead to ground. If reading is less than 10.5 volts, repair open circuit and repeat Quick Test. If reading is 10.5 volts or more, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect 60-pin connector at ECA and inspect ECA and harness terminals. Repair as required. Connect breakout box and leave ECA disconnected. With DVOM on 200 ohm scale, measure continuity from box pin 35 to canister purge circuit on back of solenoid connector. If reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open circuit and repeat Quick Test. If reading is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Breakout box connected and ECA and canister purge solenoid disconnected. With DVOM on 200, 000 ohm scale, measure resistance from box pin 35 to pins 37 and 57. If reading is 10,000 ohms or more, go to next step. If reading is less than 10,000 ohms, repair short to power and repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Breakout box connected and ECA and canister purge solenoid disconnected. With DVOM on 200,000 ohm scale, measure resistance from box pin 35 to pins 40, 46 and 60 in turn. If readings are less than 10,000 ohms, repair short to ground and repeat Quick Test. If readings are 10,000 ohms or more, replace ECA and repeat Quick Test.
Canister Purge Circuit. Scheme 83
TEST L - WIDE OPEN THROTTLE (WOT) A/C CUT-OUT OUTPUT CIRCUIT CHECK
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect harness at wide open throttle A/C cutout solenoid. With DVOM on 200 ohm scale, measure solenoid resistance. If reading is 50-100 ohms, reconnect solenoid and go to next step. If reading is less than 50 ohms or more than 100 ohms, replace solenoid and repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition on (engine off). With DVOM on 20 volt scale, connect positive lead to vehicle power circuit at cutout solenoid and negative lead to good ground. If reading less than 10.5 volts, repair open circuit and repeat Quick Test. If reading 10.5 volts or more, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect 60-pin connector at ECA and inspect. Repair as required. Connect breakout box and leave ECA disconnected. With DVOM on 200 ohm scale, measure continuity from box pin 54 to wide open throttle A/C cutout circuit at solenoid harness. If reading 5 ohms or more, repair open circuit and repeat Quick Test. If reading less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect harness at cutout solenoid. Breakout box installed and ECA disconnected. With DVOM on 200,000 ohm scale, measure resistance from box pin 54 to pins 37 and 57. If readings 10,000 ohms or more, go to next step. If readings less than 10,000 ohms, repair short to power and repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Breakout box installed and ECA and cutout solenoid disconnected. With DVOM on 200,000 ohm scale, measure resistance from box pin 54 to pins 40, 46 and 60 in turn. If readings less than 10,000 ohms, repair short to ground and repeat Quick Test. If readings 10,000 ohms or more, replace ECA and repeat Quick Test.
Wide Open Throttle A/C Cutout Circuit. Scheme 84
TEST M - FUEL PUMP CIRCUIT (INERTIA SWITCH)
- Install fuel pressure gauge to Schrader valve. Check if fuel pump runs. Cycle ignition from off to "Run" ( DO NOT crank engine) several times. Pump should operate in "Run" mode. If so, check fuel system for problems. If not, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect 60-pin connector at ECA and inspect. Connect breakout box and reconnect ECA. Turn ignition on. With DVOM on 20 volt scale, measure voltage between box pin 37 and pin 40 and between box pin 57 and pin 60. If either is less than 10.5 volts, go to «TEST B - VEHICLE BATTERY»(/lincoln/continental/vii-1982-1987/remont/testing-diagnostics/#50l-cfi-eec-iv-testing__test-b-vehicle-battery) . If both are 10.5 volts or more, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Leave breakout box and ECA connected. Locate and disconnect fuel pump inertia switch. With DVOM on 200 ohm scale, measure resistance of switch. If less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If 5 ohms or more, replace inertia switch and repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition on (engine off). Leave breakout box and ECA connected. With DVOM on 20 volt scale, measure voltage from chassis ground to power to pump(s) circuit at fuel pump relay while cranking engine. If 8 volts or more during cranking, go to next step. If less than 8 volts during cranking, go to step 6).
- Turn ignition on (engine off). Leave breakout box and ECA connected. With DVOM on 20 volt scale, measure voltage from chassis ground to power to pump(s) circuit at fuel pump(s) while cranking. If 8 volts or more during cranking, service electric fuel pump(s). If less than 8 volts during cranking, repair open in power to pump(s) circuit and repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition on (engine off). Leave breakout box and ECA connected. Locate fuel pump relay. With DVOM on 20 volt scale, measure voltage from chassis ground to vehicle power circuit at relay. If 10.5 volts or more, go to next step. If less than 10.5 volts, repair open in vehicle power circuit (between fuel pump relay and ECA) and repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition on (engine off). Leave breakout box and ECA connected. Locate fuel pump relay. With DVOM on 20 volt scale, measure voltage from chassis ground to vehicle battery circuit at fuel pump relay. If 10.5 volts or more, go to next step. If less than 10.5 volts, repair open circuit (between relay and battery positive terminal) and repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Leave breakout box and ECA connected. Fuel pump relay disconnected. With DVOM on 200 ohm scale, measure resistance of fuel pump relay from fuel pump circuit to box pin 22. If less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If 5 ohms or more, repair open in fuel pump circuit and repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Leave breakout box installed and disconnect ECA. Locate and disconnect fuel pump relay. With DVOM on 200,000 ohm scale, measure resistance from box pin 22 to pins 37 and 57. If 10,000 ohms or more, go to next step. If less than 10,000 ohms, repair short to power in fuel pump circuit and reconnect ECA. Attempt to start vehicle. If vehicle does not start, replace ECA and repeat Quick Test.
- Leave breakout box installed and ECA disconnected. Insert jumper wire between box pin 22 and pin 40 (or 60). Turn ignition on (engine off). With DVOM on 20 volt scale, measure voltage from chassis ground to power to pump(s) circuit at fuel pump relay. If 10.5 volts or more, replace ECA and repeat Quick Test. If less than 10.5 volts, replace fuel pump relay, reconnect ECA and repeat Quick Test.
Fuel Pump Test Circuits. Scheme 85
TEST N - THROTTLE KICKER OUTPUT CIRCUIT CHECK
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect harness at throttle kicker solenoid. With DVOM on 200 ohm scale, measure solenoid resistance. If reading is 50-100 ohms, reconnect solenoid and go to next step. If reading is less than 50 ohms or more than 100 ohms, replace throttle kicker solenoid and repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition on (engine off). With DVOM on 20 volt scale, connect positive lead to vehicle power circuit at throttle kicker solenoid and negative lead to good ground. If reading 10.5 volts or less, repair open circuit and repeat Quick Test. If reading 10.5 volts or more, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect 60-pin connector at ECA and inspect. Repair as required. Connect breakout box and leave ECA and throttle kicker solenoid disconnected. With DVOM on 200 ohm scale, measure continuity from box pin 53 to throttle kicker circuit at solenoid harness. If reading 5 ohms or more, repair open circuit and repeat Quick Test. If reading less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Breakout box installed and ECA and throttle kicker solenoid disconnected. With DVOM on 200,000 ohm scale, measure resistance from box pin 53 to pins 37 and 57. If all readings 10,000 ohms or more, go to next step. If any reading less than 10,000 ohms, repair short to power and repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Breakout box installed and ECA and throttle kicker solenoid disconnected. With DVOM on 200,000 ohm scale, measure resistance from box pin 53 to pins 40, 46 and 60 in turn. If all readings less than 10,000 ohms, repair short to ground and repeat Quick Test. If any reading 10,000 ohms or more, replace ECA and repeat Quick Test.
Throttle Kicker Circuit. Scheme 86
TEST O - NO CODES, IMPROPER CODES
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Place DVOM on 20 volt scale. Disconnect throttle position sensor (TPS). Turn ignition on. Measure voltage at TPS harness connector between voltage reference signal circuit and signal return circuit. If 6 volts or more, go to «TEST C - REFERENCE VOLTAGE»(/lincoln/continental/vii-1982-1987/remont/testing-diagnostics/#50l-cfi-eec-iv-testing__test-c-reference-voltage) , step 2). If less than 4 volts, go to «TEST C - REFERENCE VOLTAGE»(/lincoln/continental/vii-1982-1987/remont/testing-diagnostics/#50l-cfi-eec-iv-testing__test-c-reference-voltage) , step 1). If between 4-6 volts, reconnect TPS and go to next step.
- With ignition on, measure voltage between battery negative post and signal return circuit in self-test connector. If less than .5 volt, go to next step. If .5 volt or more, go to «TEST B - VEHICLE BATTERY»(/lincoln/continental/vii-1982-1987/remont/testing-diagnostics/#50l-cfi-eec-iv-testing__test-b-vehicle-battery) , step 4).
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect 60-pin connector at ECA and inspect. Repair as required. Connect breakout box and reconnect ECA. Place DVOM on 200 ohm scale. Measure resistance of self-test input connector from self-test pigtail to box pin 48. If less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If 5 ohms or more, repair open circuit and repeat Quick Test.
- Measure resistance of self-test output between self-test connector and box pin 17. If less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If 5 ohms or more, repair open circuit and repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition off. Connect DVOM between oxygen sensor ground point on engine and box pin 49. If 5 ohms or more, repair oxygen sensor ground wire or open circuit bad connection and repeat Quick Test. If less than 5 ohms, disconnect ECA and inspect connector. If okay, reconnect and repeat Quick Test. If problem still present, replace ECA.
- Continuous Code 15. Code 15 is recorded any time power is lost to Keep Alive Memory circuit. Clear continuous codes and repeat Key On-Engine Off Self-Test. If code 15, go to next step. If no code 15, test complete.
- Ensure EEC components are properly connected and wiring does not contact ignition components or wires. Service as required and repeat Key On-Engine Off Self-Test. If code 15, go to next step. If no code 15, test complete.
- Check power circuit to Keep Alive Memory circuit for voltage. Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect 60-pin connector at ECA and check connector terminals and ECA pins for damage. Connect breakout box, leaving ECA disconnected. With DVOM on 20 volt scale, connect positive lead to box pin 1 and negative lead to pin 46. Turn ignition on and observe reading. If less than 10 volts, service open to Keep Alive Memory circuit and repeat Quick Test. If 10 volts or more, go to next step.
- With ignition on, activate Key On-Engine Off Self-Test. If code 15, replace ECA and repeat Quick Test. If no code 15, disconnect breakout box and repeat Key On-Engine Off Self-Test.
- Engine Stalls Routine. Perform diagnosis of non-EEC related components and repair as required. Check all vacuum lines, electrical connections and routing. Diagnose engine functions as on a vehicle without EEC. After correcting faults, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Install tachometer. Start engine and attempt to maintain engine at 2000 RPM for 2 minutes. If engine stalls, go to «TEST A - NO START»(/lincoln/continental/vii-1982-1987/remont/testing-diagnostics/#50l-cfi-eec-iv-testing__test-a-no-start) , step 13). If engine does not stall, go to next step.
- With engine at operating temperature and tachometer installed, turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Activate Quick Test and perform Engine Running Self-Test while maintaining engine at 2000 RPM. If engine passes test or any codes are recorded, service codes as described for Engine Running Self-Test. If no codes are recorded, go to step 1).
- Output State Check Not Functioning. Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Perform Key On-Engine Off Self-Test and leave ignition on to enter Output State Check. If codes 23, 53 or 63 are present in On Demand Test results, service codes as described for Key On-Engine Off Self-Test. If no codes 23, 53 or 63, leave ignition on and go to next step.
- While in Output State Check, set DVOM on 20 volt scale. Measure voltage between self-test output circuit of self-test connector and battery positive terminal. Depress throttle to wide open position and release. Verify throttle is in closed position and note voltage reading. If greater than 10 volts, check throttle and linkage for sticking or binding and repeat Quick Test. If less than 10 volts, replace throttle position sensor (TPS) and repeat Quick Test.

TEST P - FUEL CONTROL TEST
Note. Fuel contaminated engine oil may affect 41 and 42 service codes. If this is suspected, remove PCV from valve cover and repeat Quick Test. If problem corrected, change engine oil and filter.
- Start and run engine for 2 minutes at 2000 RPM. With engine at normal operating temperature, perform Engine Running Self-Test. If code 43 present, go to next step. If no code 43, repair all other codes as described in Engine Running Self-Test.
- Check for exhaust leaks at exhaust manifold and inlet pipe. Repair as required and repeat Quick Test. If no leaks, go to next step.
- Code 43. Start engine and allow to idle. If engine idle deteriorates and remains poor during and after Engine Running Self-Test, service fuel system. If not, replace oxygen sensor and repeat Quick Test.
- Code 41. Turn ignition off and place DVOM on 20 volt scale. Disconnect harness at oxygen sensor and connect DVOM between oxygen sensor and engine ground. Start and run engine 2000 RPM for 2 minutes. If reading is greater than .5 volt at end of 2 minutes, go to next step. If not, replace oxygen sensor and repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect harness at oxygen sensor. Disconnect 60-pin connector at ECA and inspect. Repair as required. Connect breakout box and leave ECA disconnected. With DVOM on 2000 ohm scale, measure continuity from box pin 29 to oxygen sensor connector. Then measure from box pin 49 to pins 40 and 60. If both readings less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If either reading 5 ohms or more, repair open circuit and repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition off. Breakout box installed and ECA and oxygen sensor disconnected. With DVOM on 200,000 ohm scale, measure resistance between box pins 29 and 49. If reading is 10,000 ohms or more, oxygen sensor input circuit is okay, go to step 10). If reading is less than 10,000 ohms, repair cause of resistance to ground and repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect breakout box and reconnect ECA. Disconnect harness at oxygen sensor. Using jumper wire, jumper oxygen sensor circuit at sensor harness to engine block. Perform Engine Running Self-Test. Remove jumper wire at end of test. If code 41 present, go to step 9). If no code 41, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Oxygen sensor disconnected. Disconnect 60-pin connector at ECA and inspect. Repair as required. Connect breakout box and leave ECA disconnected. With DVOM on 2000 ohm scale, measure continuity from box pin 29 to oxygen sensor connector. Then measure from box pin 49 to oxygen sensor ground on engine. If both readings less than 5 ohms, check ECA harness connectors for damage and replace ECA if any terminals found defective. If either reading 5 ohms or more, repair open circuit and repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition off. Breakout box and oxygen sensor disconnected and ECA connected. Disconnect PCV hose at intake manifold. With DVOM on 20 volt scale, connect leads between oxygen sensor and engine ground. Start and run engine at 2000 RPM for 2 minutes and observe DVOM. If reading less than .4 volt, oxygen sensor okay, go to next step. If reading .4 volt or more, replace oxygen sensor and retest.
- Install fuel pressure gauge. Start and run engine and observe pressure. If pressure is 24-45 psi (1.7-3.2 kg/cm 2 ) with engine running or 60 seconds after final ignition off, go to next step. If pressure is not within specifications, check electric fuel pump(s).
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect 60-pin connector at ECA and inspect. Repair as required. With DVOM on 200 ohm scale, connect leads from box pin 57 to pin 58, then from box pin 57 to pin 59. If reading less than 1.5 ohms or greater than 3.5 ohms, repair harness at suspect injector. If harness okay, replace injector. If reading 1.5-3.5 ohms, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Connect breakout box and reconnect ECA. Using a non-powered 12 volt test lamp, connect test lamp from box pin 57 to pin 59. Crank or start engine. Repeat test with test lamp connected from box pin 57 to pin 58. If test lamp glows dimly on both tests, system normal, go to next step. If test lamp does not glow on 1 or both tests, ensure 12 volt battery power at box pin 57. If okay, replace ECA. If test lamp glows brightly on 1 or both tests, repair short to ground in both injector circuits. If okay, replace ECA.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect breakout box and reconnect ECA. Connect tachometer to engine. Start and run engine at 2000 RPM. It may be necessary to disconnect throttle kicker solenoid and use throttle body stop screw to set engine speed. Disconnect and reconnect injectors 1 at a time and note RPM drop for each injector. Reset curb idle speed and reconnect throttle kicker (if disconnected). If each injector produced at least 100 RPM drop, fuel system is okay, check for air/vacuum leak, fuel contamination and faulty EGR system. If each injector did not produce 100 RPM drop, replace suspect injector.

TEST Q - SPARK TIMING CHECK
- If spark advance was not 27-33° in Engine Running Self-Test, place system in Self-Test. After last Self-Test service code is displayed, system returns to normal after 2 minutes and spark timing will no longer be locked at 30°.
- Connect timing light to engine. Locate spark output circuit to TFI module and open the connection. Start engine and check base timing. Base timing is 7-13° BTDC. If timing is correct, go to step 3). If timing is not correct, reconnect spark output circuit and set base timing. After timing is adjusted, repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect 60-pin connector at ECA and inspect. Connect breakout box. Turn ignition on. With DVOM on 20 volt scale, measure voltage from box pin 37 to pin 40 and from box pin 57 to pin 60. If either reading is less than 10.5 volts, perform «TEST B - VEHICLE BATTERY»(/lincoln/continental/vii-1982-1987/remont/testing-diagnostics/#50l-cfi-eec-iv-testing__test-b-vehicle-battery) . If both readings are 10.5 volts or more, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect harness connector at TFI module. With DVOM on 200 ohm scale, measure spark output circuit from spark output pin (pin 2) on TFI harness connector to box pin 36. If 5 ohms or less, continue to next step. If more than 5 ohms, repair open circuit. Check timing as described in step 1).
- Install breakout box, leave TFI harness disconnected. With ignition off, place DVOM on 200 ohm scale. Measure resistance from box pin 16 to TFI harness connector ignition ground pin (pin 6). If less than 5 ohms, go to «TEST A - NO START»(/lincoln/continental/vii-1982-1987/remont/testing-diagnostics/#50l-cfi-eec-iv-testing__test-a-no-start) , step 7). If 5 ohms or more, repair harness as required and repeat Quick Test.

TEST R - THROTTLE KICKER
- Check air and vacuum lines to throttle kicker solenoid for blockage, kinks, leaks and proper routing. Repair as required and repeat Quick Test. If all okay, service codes 12 and 13 (if present) and go to next step.
- Disconnect vacuum lines at throttle kicker solenoid and install vacuum pump and vacuum gauge. Apply 20 in. Hg. If vacuum holds, go to next step. If vacuum does not hold, replace throttle kicker solenoid and repeat Quick Test.
- With 20 in. Hg applied at throttle kicker solenoid, perform Engine Running Self-Test. If code 12 or 13 present, EEC system okay, adjust idle speed. If no code 12 or 13, go to next step. Remove vacuum pump and gauge and reconnect hoses at throttle kicker solenoid.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Enter Output State Check and perform Key On-Engine Off Self-Test until end of Continuous code display. DVOM will indicate zero volts. Depress and release throttle and observe DVOM. If DVOM registered high voltage, remain in Output State Check and go to next step. If DVOM did not register high voltage, depress throttle to wide open position and release. If voltage still does not register high reading, go to «TEST O - NO CODES, IMPROPER CODES»(/lincoln/continental/vii-1982-1987/remont/testing-diagnostics/#50l-cfi-eec-iv-testing__test-o-no-codes-improper) , step 13).
- Remain in Output State Check. Disconnect vacuum lines at throttle kicker solenoid and install vacuum pump to supply port and vacuum gauge to output port. Apply 6 in. Hg. vacuum to solenoid. While cycling output on and off (depressing and releasing throttle) observe vacuum gauge. If vacuum output cycles on and off, go to next step. If vacuum does not cycle on and off, remove test equipment, replace throttle kicker solenoid and repeat Quick Test.
- Disconnect vacuum lines at throttle kicker solenoid and start engine. If vacuum is present, EEC system okay, check idle adjustment. If no vacuum present, repair source of vacuum blockage or leak and repeat Quick Test.
Throttle Kicker Circuit. Scheme 90
TEST S - AIR MANAGEMENT SYSTEM TEST
- Codes 44, 45 and 46. Check air and vacuum lines to TAB/TAD solenoids and by-pass diverter valve for blockage, leaks, restrictions and proper routing. Repair as required and repeat Quick Test. If lines okay, go to step 4) for code 44; next step for code 45 and step 3) for code 46.
- Disconnect and plug vacuum line at diverter valve. Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Perform Engine Running Self-Test and record codes. If code 45 present, EEC system okay, repair diverter valve or check valve. If no code 45, go to next step.
- Disconnect and plug vacuum line at by-pass valve. Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Perform Engine Running Self-Test and record codes. If code 46 present, EEC system okay, repair by-pass valve. If no code 46, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Enter Output State Check and perform Key On-Engine Off Self-Test until end of Continuous code display. DVOM will indicate zero volts. Depress and release throttle and observe DVOM. If DVOM indicates high reading, remain in Output State Check and go to next step. If DVOM does not indicate high reading, depress throttle to wide open position and release. If DVOM still does not indicate high reading, go to «TEST O - NO CODES, IMPROPER CODES»(/lincoln/continental/vii-1982-1987/remont/testing-diagnostics/#50l-cfi-eec-iv-testing__test-o-no-codes-improper) , step 13). Leave equipment connected.
- Disconnect vacuum line at TAB solenoid supply port and install vacuum pump. Disconnect vacuum line at TAB solenoid output port and install vacuum gauge. While maintaining vacuum on TAB solenoid, depress and release throttle to cycle output on and off and observe vacuum gauge. Repeat procedure for TAD solenoid. If both vacuum outputs cycled on and off, go to next step. If either vacuum output does not cycle on and off, replace TAB/TAD solenoid assembly and repeat Quick Test.
- Disconnect TAB solenoid-to-thermactor valve vacuum hose. Connect vacuum pump and gauge and test hose for blockage and leaks. Repeat procedure for TAD solenoid-to-thermactor valve vacuum hose. Repair as required and repeat Quick Test. If vacuum lines okay, go to next step.
- Disconnect vacuum lines at TAB/TAD solenoids and start engine. If vacuum is present, EEC system okay, service air pump or thermactor valve. If vacuum is not present, repair source of vacuum leak or blockage and repeat Quick Test.

TEST T - DYNAMIC RESPONSE TEST
Code 77. This code appeared because the system failed to recognize a brief wide open throttle. Repeat Engine Running Self-Test. After Dynamic Response Code is received, perform a wide open throttle. If code 77 is still present, replace ECA and repeat Quick Test. If no code 77, Dynamic Response Test is passed. Repair any service codes received as required.
TEST U - SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS
- If engine stalls, stalls in Self-Test, runs rough or misses, check the following: Poor power/ground connections, ignition system problem, engine internal problem (valves, cam timing, compression, etc.), EGR valve or fuel system.
- If engine detonation (spark knock) occurs or engine idles rough, check EGR function and go to «TEST H - EGR VALVE POSITION (EVP) SENSOR»(/lincoln/continental/vii-1982-1987/remont/testing-diagnostics/#50l-cfi-eec-iv-testing__test-h-egr-valve-position) .
- If engine lacks fast idle during A/C operation, go to «TEST R - THROTTLE KICKER»(/lincoln/continental/vii-1982-1987/remont/testing-diagnostics/#50l-cfi-eec-iv-testing__test-r-throttle-kicker) , step 4).
- If gasoline fumes accumulate under hood, go to «TEST X - CANISTER PURGE»(/lincoln/continental/vii-1982-1987/remont/testing-diagnostics/#50l-cfi-eec-iv-testing__test-x-canister-purge) .
TEST V - ERRATIC IGNITION
- Code 14. This code indicates 2 successive mistimed distributor output pulses were input to ECA, resulting in possible engine miss or stall. Check EEC and ignition systems for loose wires and connections, arcing secondary ignition components (coil, cap, wires, etc.) or an on-board 2-way radio. Make sure radio antenna and power leads are routed properly. If any of the above are present, repair as necessary and repeat Quick Test. If none are present, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Deactivate Self-Test. Connect volt/ohmmeter and enter Engine Running Continuous Monitor Test. While lightly tapping on TFI module and distributor and wiggling TFI harness connector, observe volt/ohmmeter for fault indication. If fault is indicated, disconnect and inspect connectors and repair as required. If no fault is indicated, go to next step.
- While still in Continuous Monitor Mode, observe volt/ohmmeter while doing the following: Beginning at TFI module, wiggle, shake or bend small sections of harness while working way to dash panel. Then repeating process from panel to ECA. Isolate the Profile Ignition Pick-Up (PIP) circuit for this test, if required. If fault is indicated, isolate and repair problem and repeat Quick Test. If no fault indicated, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect 60-pin connector at ECA and inspect. If connector pins and ECA terminals are damaged, repair as required and repeat Quick Test. If pins and terminals are okay, fault cannot be duplicated at this time, service TFI ignition system. Reconnect ECA.
TEST W - IGNITION DIAGNOSTIC MONITOR
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Deactivate Engine Running Self-Test. Connect volt/ohmmeter and enter Engine Running Continuous Monitor Test. While lightly tapping on TFI module and wiggling TFI harness connector, observe volt/ohmmeter for fault indication. If fault is indicated, disconnect TFI harness and inspect harness connector and TFI terminals. If okay, service TFI ignition system. If no fault indicated, go to next step.
- While still in Continuous Monitor Mode, observe volt/ohmmeter while doing the following: Beginning at TFI module, wiggle, shake or bend small sections of harness while working way to dash panel. Then repeating process from panel to ECA. If fault is indicated, isolate and repair problem and repeat Quick Test. If no fault indicated, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect 60-pin connector at ECA and inspect. Service as required and repeat Quick Test. If connectors and terminals are okay, unable to duplicate fault at this time. Service TFI ignition system. Reconnect ECA.

TEST X - CANISTER PURGE
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Place DVOM on 200 ohm scale. Disconnect canister purge solenoid connector and measure resistance of solenoid. If reading is 40-90 ohms, reconnect solenoid and go to next step. If reading is less than 40 ohms or more than 90 ohms, replace solenoid and repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Enter Output State Check. Place DVOM on 20 volt scale. Perform Key On-Engine Off Self-Test until end of Continuous code display. DVOM will indicate 0 volts. Depress and release throttle. If DVOM indicated high voltage, remain in Output State Check and go to next step. If DVOM did not indicate high voltage, depress throttle to wide open position and release. If voltage still does not go high, go to «TEST O - NO CODES, IMPROPER CODES»(/lincoln/continental/vii-1982-1987/remont/testing-diagnostics/#50l-cfi-eec-iv-testing__test-o-no-codes-improper) , step 13).
- With test equipment connected as in step 2), connect DVOM positive lead to vehicle power circuit on rear of canister purge solenoid connector and negative lead to canister purge output circuit. While observing DVOM, depress and release throttle several times to cycle output on and off. If output cycles on and off, go to next step. If not, remove jumper wire from self-test input and go to step 5).
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Remove jumper wire from self-test input. Disconnect vacuum hose at PCV side of canister purge solenoid. Using vacuum pump, apply 16 in. Hg to solenoid. If solenoid holds vacuum for 20 seconds, EEC system is operating properly. Check fuel evaporation system. If solenoid does not hold vacuum for 20 seconds, replace solenoid and repeat Quick Test. If code 42 still present, check fuel system.
- Turn ignition on (engine off). With DVOM on 20 volt scale, connect positive lead to vehicle power circuit of canister purge solenoid and negative lead to ground. If reading is less than 10.5 volts, repair open circuit in harness and repeat Quick Test. If reading is 10.5 volts or more, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect 60-pin connector at ECA and inspect connector and ECA terminals. Repair as required. Connect breakout box and leave ECA disconnected. Disconnect canister purge solenoid. With DVOM on 200 ohm scale, measure continuity from box pin 35 to canister purge circuit at solenoid harness. If reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open circuit and repeat Quick Test. If reading is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Set DVOM on 200,000 ohm scale. Breakout box connected and ECA and canister purge solenoid disconnected. Measure resistance from box pin 35 to pins 37 and 57. If reading is 10,000 ohms or more, go to next step. If reading is less than 10,000 ohms, repair short to power and repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Breakout box connected and ECA and canister purge solenoid disconnected. With DVOM on 200,000 ohm scale, measure resistance from box pin 35 to pins 40, 46 and 60 in turn. If reading is less than 10,000 ohms, repair short to ground and repeat Quick Test. If reading is 10,000 ohms or more, replace ECA and repeat Quick Test.
Canister Purge Circuit. Scheme 93
TEST Y - WIDE OPEN THROTTLE (WOT) A/C CUTOUT
Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect 60 pin connector at ECA and inspect. Repair as required. Connect breakout box and leave ECA disconnected. Turn ignition on (engine off). With DVOM on 20 volt scale, connect positive lead to A/C clutch and negative lead to good ground. Turn A/C switch on. Insert jumper wire between box pin 54 and pin 60. DVOM will indicate 0 volts. Depress and release throttle. If DVOM indicates high reading, EEC system okay, service A/C system. If DVOM does not indicate high reading, replace wide open throttle A/C cutout relay and repeat Quick Test.

TEST Z - EGR CONTROL TEST
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect harness at EGR solenoid. With DVOM on 200 ohm scale, measure solenoid resistance. If reading is 65-110 ohms, reconnect EGR solenoid and go to next step. If reading is less than 65 ohms or greater than 110 ohms, replace EGR solenoid and repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Enter Output State Check and perform Key On-Engine Off Self-Test until end of Continuous code display. DVOM will indicate zero volts. Depress and release throttle and observe DVOM. If reading goes high, remain in Output State Check and go to next step. If reading does not go high, depress throttle to wide open position and release. If reading still does not go high, go to «TEST O - NO CODES, IMPROPER CODES»(/lincoln/continental/vii-1982-1987/remont/testing-diagnostics/#50l-cfi-eec-iv-testing__test-o-no-codes-improper) , step 13). Leave equipment connected.
- With DVOM on 20 volt scale, connect positive lead to vehicle power circuit and negative lead to EGR output circuit at EGR solenoid harness. While observing DVOM, depress and release throttle several times to cycle output on and off. If EGR output cycles on and off, go to next step. If EGR output does not cycle on and off, go to step 6).
- Disconnect vacuum line at EGR solenoid supply port and install vacuum pump. Disconnect vacuum line at EGR solenoid output port and install vacuum gauge. While maintaining 6 in. Hg vacuum on EGR solenoid, depress and release throttle to cycle output on and off and observe vacuum gauge. If vacuum output cycles on and off, go to next step. If vacuum output does not cycle on and off, replace EGR solenoid and repeat Quick Test.
- Disconnect vacuum lines at EGR solenoid and start engine. If vacuum is present, EEC system okay, service EGR control system. If vacuum is not present, repair source of vacuum leak or blockage and repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition on (engine off). With DVOM on 20 volt scale, connect positive lead to vehicle power circuit at EGR solenoid harness and negative lead to good ground. If reading less than 10.5 volts, repair open circuit and repeat Quick Test. If reading 10.5 volts or more, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect 60-pin connector at ECA and inspect. Repair as required. Connect breakout box and leave ECA disconnected. With DVOM on 200 ohm scale, measure continuity from box pin 35 to EGR circuit at EGR solenoid harness. If reading 5 ohms or more, repair open circuit and repeat Quick Test. If reading less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Breakout box installed and ECA and EGR solenoid disconnected. With DVOM on 200,000 ohm scale, measure resistance from box pin 35 to pins 37 and 57. If reading 10,000 ohms or more, go to next step. If reading less than 10,000 ohms, repair short to power and repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Breakout box installed and ECA and EGR solenoid disconnected. With DVOM on 200,000 ohm scale, measure resistance from box pin 35 to pins 40, 46 and 60 in turn. If reading 10,000 ohms or more, replace ECA and repeat Quick Test. If reading less than 10,000 ohms, repair short to ground and repeat Quick Test.
