Powertrain Control Module (PCM)

The PCM is located in the instrument panel on the right side behind the glove compartment. The PCM is on the SCP communication network. The PCM controls the engine for better fuel economy, emissions control, failure mode detection and storage. Refer to TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES - CNG, FLEX-FUEL for diagnosis and testing of the PCM.

Anti-Lock Brake/Traction Control (ABS/TC) Module or Stability Assist Module

The anti-lock brake system/traction control (ABS/TC) module or stability assist module are on the standard corporate protocol (SCP) communication network. The ABS/TC module or stability assist module controls the brake pressure to the four wheels to keep the vehicle under control while braking. For additional information, refer to ANTI-LOCK CONTROL .

Restraint Control Module (RCM)

The RCM is located under the center console towards the instrument panel. The RCM is on the ISO 9141 network. The RCM controls the deployment of the air bags based on sensor input. For additional information, refer to AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS .

Dual Electronic Automatic Temperature Control (DEATC) Module

The DEATC module is located in the instrument panel below the radio. The DEATC module is on the SCP communication network. The DEATC module controls automatic climate functions that maintain the vehicle interior temperature at a constant setting. For additional information, refer to CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM .

Instrument Cluster

The instrument cluster is located in the instrument panel above the steering column. The instrument cluster is on the SCP communication network. The instrument cluster serves as a UBP gateway to communicate to other modules on the UBP communication network. The instrument cluster is also called a hybrid electronic cluster (HEC). The instrument cluster displays a variety of information. For additional information, refer to INFORMATION, GAUGES & WARNING DEVICES .

Tire Pressure Monitor Module

If equipped, the tire pressure monitor module is located behind the right side C-pillar trim. The tire pressure monitor module is on the SCP communication network. The tire pressure monitor module uses one sensor mounted in each tire to sense low tire pressure. When low tire pressure is sensed the module will send a warning to the driver. Variable Assist Power Steering (VAPS) Module

The VAPS module is located behind the instrument panel behind the glove compartment. The VAPS module is on the SCP communication network. The VAPS module controls and varies the power steering effort needed at different vehicle speeds. For additional information, refer to STEERING SYSTEM .

Driver Seat Module (DSM)

The DSM is located under the driver seat. The DSM is on the UBP communication network. The DSM controls the positioning and programming of the driver seat, pedals and both outside mirrors. For additional information, refer to SEATING .

Vehicle Security Module

The vehicle security module is located behind the right rear quarter trim panel. The vehicle security module is on the UBP communication network. The vehicle security module controls the keyless entry functions for the vehicle. For additional information, refer to HANDLES, LOCKS, LATCHES AND ENTRY SYSTEMS .

Driver Climate Controlled Seat Module

The driver climate controlled seat module is located under the driver seat. The driver climate controlled seat module is on the UBP communications network. The driver climate controlled seat module controls the heating elements in the seat for passenger comfort. For additional driver climate controlled seat module information, refer to SEATING .

Passenger Climate Controlled Seat Module

The passenger climate controlled seat module is located under the passenger seat. The passenger climate controlled seat module is on the UBP communications network. The passenger climate controlled seat module controls the heating elements in the seat for passenger comfort. For additional passenger controlled seat module information, refer to SEATING .

Parking Aid Module

The parking aid module is located in the right rear quarter trim panel towards the rear. The parking aid module is connected to the ISO 9141 communication module. The module controls sensors in the rear bumper that detect close objects when the vehicle is in reverse. For additional information, refer to INFORMATION, GAUGES & WARNING DEVICES .

Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) Control Module

The 4WD control module is located in the center console towards the instrument panel. The 4WD control module is on the UBP communications network. The 4WD control module engages and disengages the transfer case between 2WD and 4WD when more traction is required. For additional information, refer to FOUR WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEMS .

Navigation Module

The navigation module is located behind the rear seat under the carpet. The navigation module is on the SCP communications network. The navigation module controls the global positioning system on the vehicle. For additional information, refer to ELECTRONIC FEATURES .

Module Configuration

Some modules must be programmed as part of the repair procedure. If this procedure is not followed the module will not function correctly and may set a number of DTCs, including B2477 or P1639, which indicate that some necessary data has not been programmed into the module.

Modules that need programming should not be exchanged between vehicles. In most cases the parameter values or settings are unique to that vehicle, and if not set correctly will cause concerns or faults.

Some programmable parameters, such as belt minder on/off, can be changed from the factory setting at the customer's request.

Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) will automatically attempt to retrieve the module configuration information from all modules, and from a backup location in the powertrain control module (PCM) when vehicle ID is carried out. If the module and the PCM do not contain correct information, the diagnostic tool will either request As-Built data or display a list of items that will need to be manually configured. The WDS will program the module based on the data entered.

There are three different methods that are used for module programming

  1. Programmable Module Installation (PMI)
  2. Calibration Update
  3. Programmable Parameters

Some modules do not support all three methods.

Programmable Parameters

This method is used to configure parameters that can be modified in service. These are typically at the preference of the customer. Not all features controlled by the module are listed in this configuration method. Refer to the MODULE CONFIGURATION Index for a list of features by system.

If a module that has been modified using programmable parameters needs to be installed, the PMI procedure will maintain the parameters in their altered state if WDS is able to communicate with the old module during vehicle ID. Otherwise, programmable parameters may be needed to return them to the altered state.

As-Built Data Center

The As-Built Data Center maintains a record of the vehicle configuration in a database. The vehicle VIN is required to obtain this information. The As-Built Data Center records the applicable module configurations stored in each module before the vehicle leaves the factory. The As-Built Data Center will always reflect the original build of the vehicle as it left the factory. Only contact the As-Built Data Center when directed to do so by the WDS.

Configurable Modules

The vehicle contains the following modules that are configurable

  1. driver seat module (DSM)
  2. vehicle security module
  3. anti-lock brake system/traction control (ABS/TC) module or stability assist module
  4. variable assist power steering (VAPS) module instrument cluster
  5. dual electronic automatic temperature control (DEATC) module
  6. driver climate controlled seat module
  7. passenger climate controlled seat module
  8. tire pressure monitor module
  9. navigation module

The multifunction electronic control modules consist of the following

  1. Verify the customer concern by operating the system.
  2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of electrical damage.
  3. If the concern remains after the inspection, connect the diagnostic tool to the data link connector (DLC) located beneath the instrument panel and select the vehicle to be tested from the diagnostic tool menu. If the diagnostic tool does not communicate with the vehicle: check that the program card is correctly installed. check the connections to the vehicle. check the ignition switch position.
  4. If diagnostic tool still does not communicate with the vehicle, refer to the diagnostic tool operating manual.
  5. Carry out the DATA LINK DIAGNOSTICS test. If the diagnostic tool responds with: CKT693= ALL ECUS NO RESP/NOT EQUIP, GO to «PINPOINT TEST Q»(ref-193023-S09495954382005092300000) . NO RESPONSE/NOT EQUIP for DSM, GO to «PINPOINT TEST F»(ref-193023-S11532646832005092300000) . SYSTEM PASSED, retrieve and record the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), erase the continuous DTCs and carry out self-test diagnostics for the DSM.
  6. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE»(ref-193023-S32953686772005092300000) (DTC) Index to continue diagnostics.
  7. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, refer to the «SYMPTOM CHART»(ref-193023-S09025095272005092300000) to continue diagnostics.
