ENGINE MECHANICAL
Note. References to Econoline include Cutaway and RV Cutaway. References to F250-550 include Cab & Chassis.
Before performing any on-vehicle adjustments to fuel or ignition systems, ensure engine mechanical condition is okay.
VALVE CLEARANCE
Note. All models except 2.3L (VIN D) are equipped with hydraulic valve lifters. No adjustments are required. If valves are noisy or incorrect clearance is suspected, components are worn. Check collapsed valve lifter clearance. See appropriate article in ENGINES.
2.3L ENGINE (VIN Z)

| CAUTION | Tappets are location-specific. Use a permanent type marker to note tappet locations. DO NOT scratch or use paint to mark tappets, or incorrect lash adjustments and/or severe engine damage may result. |
Note. Selective sized tappets are used to adjust valve clearance.
- Disconnect battery ground cable. Disconnect CMP sensor, CHT sensor and ignition coil connectors. Remove ignition coils by pulling coils straight up while rotating. Disconnect breather tube from valve cover. Disconnect wiring harness retainers from valve cover studs move harness aside. Detach fuel injector supply manifold wiring harness from valve cover. Remove valve cover bolts and remove valve cover.
- Measure each valve's clearance at base circle, with lobe pointed away from tappet, before removing camshafts. (Scheme 4) Failure to measure all clearances prior to removing camshafts will nessitate repeated removal and installation of camshafts. Use feeler gauge to measure each valve's clearance and record its location. - A midrange clearance is most desirable. Select tappets for valves out of specification using the formula: tappet thickness = measured + base tappet thickness - most desirable thickness.
- To install new tappets, timing chain and camshafts need to be removed. See appropriate article in ENGINES for timing chain and camshaft removal procedures.

GASOLINE ENGINES
Manufacturer does not recommend checking timing as false readings are common and timing is not adjustable.

IGNITION TIMING (1)
DIESEL ENGINES
Injector timing is controlled through Injector Driver Module (IDM) interface with Powertrain Control Module (PCM). PCM receives signals from Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor. Adjustment is not possible. If system is not operating properly, complete a thorough basic inspection and self-test to confirm correct operation of sub-system contribution to injector timing. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - DIESEL article.
Idle speed is controlled by PCM and is not adjustable. If engine idle concerns are present, check PCM for DTCs. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article. If no DTCs are present, perform symptom tests in appropriate TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
