Scheme 8: Removal
  1. Release fuel pressure. See «FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE»(ref-49348-S03416196482001011500000). Remove battery. Drain cooling system and engine oil. Remove hood.
  2. Disconnect control cables at throttle body. Remove air cleaner cap and airflow meter with air cleaner hose attached. Remove air cleaner case. NOTE: Place reference mark on fan clutch and water pump for reassembly reference.
  3. Disconnect necessary electrical connections and brackets, coolant hoses, fuel lines and vacuum hoses Disconnect necessary electrical connections and brackets, coolant hoses, fuel lines and vacuum hoses from engine. Remove drive belt, cooling fan, fan clutch and water pump pulley. Remove radiator. Remove charcoal canister. Remove A/C compressor and power steering pump with hoses attached, and secure aside.
  4. Remove panel from below passenger's side of instrument panel. Remove glove box door assembly. Remove passenger-side kick panel. Pull carpet upward to access Engine Control Module (ECM) located on passenger-side floor panel.
  5. Remove nuts and ECM protector located on top of ECM. Remove and disconnect ECM. Disconnect traction control ECU, anti-lock brake ECU and 4 connectors from junction block. (Scheme 8) Remove retaining nuts and pull engine wiring out through firewall.
  6. Raise and support vehicle. Remove lower engine covers. Remove bolts and clamp from power steering pipe at front of engine. Remove starter wire. Remove fuel inlet hose (near starter). Remove exhaust pipe and front catalytic converter between exhaust manifold and center exhaust pipe. Remove exhaust pipe heat insulator. NOTE: Vehicle is equipped with a 2-piece drive shaft. Intermediate drive shaft is the front drive shaft and contains a center bearing assembly. Rear drive shaft fits between intermediate shaft and rear axle.
  7. Reference mark intermediate drive shaft companion flanges for reassembly reference. Remove center support bearing bolts. Note location of adjusting washers (if equipped) between center bearing and frame.
  8. Remove intermediate drive shaft companion flange bolts. Remove intermediate drive shaft and center bearing. Install Cap (SST 09325-40010) for A/T, or (SST 09325-20010) for M/T into transmission to prevent oil leakage.
  9. Disconnect electrical connections at transmission. On A/T models, disconnect control rod from shift linkage on transmission.
  10. On M/T models, remove clutch release cylinder with hose attached, and secure aside. From inside vehicle, pry rear side of cup holder in center console upward. Remove cup holder. Remove shift knob. To remove shift boot and inner cover, pry upward at rear retainer clips. See STEP 1. (Scheme 9) Remove inner cover.
  11. Remove screws from upper console panel. Pry upward at clip locations on upper console panel. See STEP 2. (Scheme 9) Remove upper console panel. Remove bolts and shift lever from transmission.
  12. On all models, support transmission with floor jack. Remove bolts/nuts and transmission crossmember located below transmission. Support engine with hoist. Remove engine mount-to-crossmember nuts. Lift engine and transmission from vehicle.
