- PRECAUTION FOR HANDLING SRS SYSTEM Failure to carry out service operations in the correct sequence could cause the SRS to unexpectedly deploy during servicing, possibly leading to a serious accident. Furthermore, if a mistake is made when servicing the SRS, it is possible that the SRS may fail to operate when required. Before servicing (including removal or installation of parts, inspection or replacement), be sure to read the following items carefully, then follow the procedures exactly as indicated in the repair service information.
- PRECAUTION FOR DISCONNECTING CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL As SRS malfunctions are difficult to confirm, the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) become the most important source of information when troubleshooting. When troubleshooting the SRS, always check for DTCs before disconnecting the battery. Work must be started at least 90 seconds after the engine switch is turned off and the cable is disconnected from the negative (-) battery terminal. WARNING: The SRS is equipped with a back-up power source. If work is started within 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal, the SRS may deploy. Never use a back-up power source (battery or other) to avoid clearing the system memory. The back-up power source may inadvertently power the SRS and cause it to deploy. NOTE: When disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal, initialize the following systems after the cable is reconnected. As a result, after turning the engine switch off, make sure to wait at least 60 seconds before disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal. When the cable is disconnected from the negative (-) battery terminal, the memory of various systems will be cleared. Because of this, be sure to make a record of the contents memorized in each system before starting work. When work is finished, adjust each system to its previous state.
- GENERAL PRECAUTION Use a voltmeter/ohmmeter with high impedance (minimum = 10 kohms) for troubleshooting electrical circuits. Information labels are attached to the SRS parts. Follow the instructions on the labels. Never disassemble or attempt to repair any of the SRS parts. If any of the SRS parts are dropped, or if any cracks, dents or other defects are found, replace them with new parts. Never use SRS parts from another vehicle. When replacing parts, use new parts. Do not expose any of the SRS parts directly to high temperatures or flames. If the vehicle has been involved in a minor collision where the SRS does not deploy, the SRS parts should be inspected before further use of the vehicle. Do not apply grease, detergent, oil or water to the SRS parts. If applied, immediately wipe it off with a dry cloth. When deploying or storing the SRS parts, avoid places with a high temperature (ambient temperature of 93°C (199°F) or higher for an airbag and 80°C (176°F) or higher for a pretensioner) and high humidity, and keep them away from electrical noise. Do not stack or place anything on top of the SRS parts. When disposing of the vehicle or an SRS part by itself, deploy it using SST before disposal. Deploy the SRS parts in a safe place away from electrical noise. HINT: Disposal of the steering pad. - PRECAUTION FOR DISPOSAL OF SRS PARTS (NOT DEPLOYED) Before performing pre-disposal deployment of any SRS parts, review and closely follow all applicable environmental and hazardous material regulations. Pre-disposal deployment may be considered hazardous material treatment. Never dispose of any SRS parts that are not deployed. Deploy the SRS parts outdoors in a safe and level place where it will not disturb nearby residents. As the SRS parts produce a loud sound when deployed, be sure to inform nearby residents before deployment. When deploying the SRS parts, always use SST and keep people at least 10 m (32.8 ft.) away. The SRS parts may be accidentally deployed by static electricity. To prevent this, be sure to touch a grounded metal surface with your bare hands to discharge any static electricity before handling the SRS parts. Do not face the airbag deployment side down when deploying an airbag. WARNING: A force of more than 1 ton may be applied in the direction shown by the arrow in the illustration.
- PRECAUTION FOR DISPOSAL OF SRS PARTS (DEPLOYED) As the SRS parts are very hot after being deployed, allow at least 30 minutes for them to cool down sufficiently before disposal. Do not apply water etc. to any deployed SRS parts. Use gloves and safety glasses when handling any deployed SRS parts. Seal the deployed SRS parts in a thick clear plastic bag when disposing them. Always wash your hands with water after disposing of deployed SRS parts.
- PRECAUTION FOR STEERING PAD (DRIVER AIRBAG), DRIVER SIDE KNEE AIRBAG ASSEMBLY, FRONT PASSENGER SIDE KNEE AIRBAG ASSEMBLY, FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG ASSEMBLY, CURTAIN SHIELD AIRBAG ASSEMBLY, FRONT SEAT SIDE AIRBAG ASSEMBLY AND REAR SEAT SIDE AIRBAG ASSEMBLY Keep the airbag deployment side facing upward even when the airbag is temporarily removed during an operation. WARNING: Always place a removed or new steering pad with the deployment surface facing upward. Placing the steering pad with the deployment surface facing downward could cause a serious accident if the airbag deploys.
- PRECAUTION FOR FRONT SEAT OUTER BELT ASSEMBLY (PRETENSIONER) AND REAR SEAT OUTER BELT ASSEMBLY (PRETENSIONER) Do not touch the area around the retractor even when the pretensioner is temporarily removed during an operation. WARNING: If the retractor unexpectedly operates and the belt is retracted during an operation, it could cause a serious accident.
- PRECAUTION FOR SPIRAL CABLE Do not replace the spiral cable with the battery connected and the engine switch on (IG). Do not rotate the spiral cable with the battery connected and the engine switch on (IG). Ensure that the steering wheel is installed and aligned straight when inspecting the steering sensor. Do not remove the steering sensor from the spiral cable. Be sure the spiral cable is in the neutral position during installation and when removing and installing the steering wheel. Refer to «INSTALLATION - Step 5»(ref-400651-S13980590642011051800000) . WARNING: If the steering wheel is turned without the spiral cable installed in the neutral position, the cable may break.
- PRECAUTION FOR AIRBAG SENSORS When the SRS parts are deployed (including when only an airbag or pretensioner is deployed) due to a collision, be sure to replace all sensors (center airbag sensor assembly, front airbag sensor, side airbag sensor and rear airbag sensor) as a set.
- PRECAUTION FOR WIRE HARNESS AND CONNECTOR All wire harnesses except unexposed harnesses in the engine room are colored yellow. As special connectors are used, be careful when handling them.
- WHEN SERVICING DAMAGED VEHICLE Before using an electric welder on the vehicle, remove any SRS parts around the area being repaired. WARNING: Make sure to remove any SRS parts as necessary to prevent them from accidentally deploying. Before repairs, remove the airbag sensor assemblies if impacts are likely to be applied to the sensor during repairs. Never expose an airbag sensor directly to high temperatures. As the SRS parts are very hot after being deployed, ensure that all wire harnesses and connectors around deployed SRS parts are not damaged.

HINT: If any of the defects is found or an airbag sensor has detected a major collision, replace the airbag sensor with a new one.

Depending on the situation, the center airbag sensor assembly sends a deployment signal to each airbag based on the information from each sensor.
- DEPLOYMENT CONDITION FRONTAL COLLISION Frontal collision signals are produced based on the information from the center airbag sensor assembly and front airbag sensors. HINT: *: In case of a frontal collision, the ignition signal could be output with the deceleration sensor ON signal even without a signal from the front airbag sensor. Frontal collision signals are used to deploy the airbags except the side airbags and curtain shield airbags. SIDE COLLISION (1) The side airbags are deployed based on signals from the side airbag sensors and center airbag sensor assembly. HINT: The rear seat side airbags and curtain shield airbags are deployed at the same time. SIDE COLLISION (2) The rear seat side airbags and curtain shield airbags are deployed when both of the following conditions are met: Signals from the side airbag sensors or rear airbag sensors are received. A signal from the center airbag sensor assembly is received. ROLLOVER The vehicle is equipped with the function to activate the SRS in case of vehicle rollover. A circuit to detect vehicle rollover is built into the center airbag sensor assembly. When the conditions for vehicle rollover are met, the SRS is activated as shown in the illustration below.

Constant check After the primary check, the center airbag sensor assembly constantly monitors the airbag system for malfunctions. HINT: If malfunctions are detected during the constant check, the center airbag sensor assembly functions as follows: The SRS warning light comes on. The SRS warning light goes off, and then comes on. This indicates a source voltage drop. The SRS warning light goes off 10 seconds after the source voltage returns to normal. Review When the airbag system is normal: The SRS warning light comes on only during the primary check period of approximately 6 seconds after the engine switch is turned on (IG). When the airbag system is malfunctioning: The SRS warning light remains on even after the primary check period. The SRS warning light goes off after the primary check, but comes on again during the constant check. The SRS warning light does not come on when turning the engine switch from off to on (IG). The connector has a two-piece construction consisting of the housing and spacer to securely lock the terminal using both the lance (primary lock) and spacer (secondary lock). Half connection prevention mechanism This mechanism is designed to prevent the connector from being connected only halfway. If the connector is not completely connected, the connector is disconnected due to the spring force so that no continuity exists. Activation prevention mechanism The activation prevention mechanism is designed to create a short circuit automatically between the positive and negative terminals of an airbag power source connector when disconnected. The short spring plate contained in the connector creates a closed circuit on the airbag side (no potential difference can occur between both terminals), preventing accidental airbag deployment when servicing. Connector lock mechanism (1) This mechanism is designed to prevent the connector from accidentally being disconnected. Locking the connector lock button engages the locking button claw to the groove on the other side connector to connect the connector securely. Connector Position Assurance (CPA) mechanism This mechanism is designed to detect when the connector is connected only halfway. The CPA and female connector slide to the male connector side at the same time and the primary lock is completed when the female connector is engaged with the male connector. From this point, only the CPA slides to the male connector side and secondary lock is completed when the CPA retainer is engaged with the female connector. When the CPA and female connector ends are aligned, they are completely engaged. Connector lock mechanism (2) This mechanism is designed to prevent the connector from accidentally being disconnected. Sliding the connector all the way into the holder and locking the lance completes the primary lock. Engaging the retainer to the holder as shown in the illustration completes the secondary lock, preventing the connector from accidentally being disconnected. Improper connection prevention lock mechanism This mechanism is designed to prevent the connector from being connected only halfway. When the holder is connected to the airbag sensor assembly, the unlock rib unlocks the temporarily hold lock, allowing the lever to be pushed in by rotating around the A axis. Locking the lever to the holder locks the holder securely.
- ACTIVATION PREVENTION MECHANISM Function of activation prevention mechanism An activation prevention mechanism is built into the connector (on the center airbag sensor assembly side) of the airbag system squib circuit to prevent accidental airbag activation. This mechanism closes the circuit when the connector is disconnected by bringing the short spring into contact with the terminals and insulating the circuit from external power sources to prevent accidental airbag activation. Releasing of activation prevention mechanism To release the activation prevention mechanism, insert a piece of paper with the same thickness as the male terminal (approximately 0.5 mm (0.0197 in.)) between the terminals and short spring to break the connection. Refer to the following illustrations concerning connectors utilizing the activation prevention mechanism and its release method. - DTC CHECK (USING SST CHECK WIRE) Check the DTCs (Present trouble codes). Turn the engine switch on (IG), and wait for approximately 60 seconds. Using SST, connect terminals TC and CG of the DLC3. SST: 09843-18040 NOTE: Connect the terminals to the correct positions to avoid a malfunction. Check the DTCs (Past trouble codes). Using SST, connect terminals TC and CG of the DLC3. SST: 09843-18040 NOTE: Connect the terminals to the correct positions to avoid a malfunction. Turn the engine switch on (IG), and wait for approximately 60 seconds. Read the DTCs. Read the blinking patterns of the DTCs. As examples, the blinking patterns for the normal system code and trouble codes 11 and 31 are shown in the illustration. Normal system code indication (without past trouble code) The light blinks twice per second. Normal system code indication (with past trouble code) When the past trouble code is stored in the center airbag sensor assembly, the light blinks only once per second. Trouble code indication The first blinks indicate the first DTC. The second blinks occur after a 1.5-second pause. If there is more than 1 code, there will be a 2.5-second pause between each code. After all codes are shown, there will be a 4.0-second pause, and then all codes will be repeated. HINT: If 2 or more malfunctions are found, the indication begins with the smaller-numbered code. If DTCs are indicated without connecting the terminals, proceed to TC and CG Terminal Circuit. Refer to «TC and CG Terminal Circuit»(ref-400947-S23823136252011051800000) .
- DTC CLEAR (USING SST CHECK WIRE) Clear the DTCs. When the engine switch is turned off, the DTCs are cleared. HINT: Depending on the DTC, the code may not be cleared by turning off the engine switch. In this case, proceed to the next procedure. Using SST, connect terminals TC and CG of the DLC3, and then turn the engine switch on (IG). SST: 09843-18040 Disconnect terminal TC of the DLC3 within 3 to 10 seconds after the DTCs are output, and check if the SRS warning light comes on after 3 seconds. Within 2 to 4 seconds after the SRS warning light comes on, connect terminals TC and CG of the DLC3. The SRS warning light should go off within 2 to 4 seconds after connecting terminals TC and CG of the DLC3. Then, disconnect terminal TC within 2 to 4 seconds after the SRS warning light goes off. The SRS warning light comes on again within 2 to 4 seconds after disconnecting terminal TC. Then, reconnect terminals TC and CG within 2 to 4 seconds after the SRS warning light comes on. Check if the SRS warning light goes off within 2 to 4 seconds after connecting terminals TC and CG of the DLC3. Also check if the normal system code is output within 1 second after the SRS warning light goes off. If DTCs are not cleared, repeat this procedure until the codes are cleared.

CHECK MODE PROCEDURE
- CHECK MODE (SIGNAL CHECK): DTC CHECK Turn the engine switch off. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Body Electrical / SRS Airbag / Utility / Signal Check, and proceed with checking using the Techstream. NOTE: Select Signal Check screen on the Techstream to clear the output DTCs (both present and past). HINT: DTCs can be detected more sensitively in check mode than in normal diagnosis mode. Perform check mode inspection when a malfunction in each squib circuit is suspected even after the normal system code is output through normal diagnosis mode inspection.
