TROUBLE SHOOTING
Note. See STARTER - GENERAL TROUBLE SHOOTING article in GENERAL INFORMATION.
STARTER RELAY TEST
Remove starter relay. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS. Check for continuity between starter relay terminals No. 1 and 2. (Scheme 1) Continuity should exist. If continuity does not exist, replace relay. Check for continuity between starter relay terminals No. 3 and 5. Continuity should not exist. If continuity exists, replace relay. Apply battery voltage across starter relay terminals No. 1 and 2. Check for continuity between starter relay terminals No. 3 and 5. Continuity should exist. If continuity does not exist, replace relay.

ARMATURE TEST
- Using ohmmeter, check for continuity between all segments of commutator. If continuity does not exist, replace armature. Using ohmmeter, check for continuity between commutator and armature coil core. If continuity exists, replace armature.
- Inspect commutator for dirty or burnt surfaces. Repair as necessary using No. 400 sandpaper or a lathe.
- Using a vernier caliper, measure commutator depth. See «STARTER SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-168671-S15868008392004111500000) . If commutator depth is greater than maximum specification, replace armature.
