REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

WARNINGVehicles are equipped with Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. When servicing vehicles, use care to avoid accidental air bag deployment. SIR system-related components are located in various locations throughout interior and exterior of vehicles, depending on application. Do not use electrical test equipment on or near these circuits. If necessary, deactivate SIR system before servicing components. See appropriate AIR BAG DEACTIVATION PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION.
CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. Before disconnecting battery, see appropriate COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION.

Removal

Note. To assist with air cooled oil cooler removal (Scheme 90)

  1. Remove radiator grille sub-assembly using the following steps: Remove 3 screws. Release 2 clips and remove radiator grille sub-assembly.
  2. Remove 2 bolts and separate power steering oil cooler sub-assembly.
  3. Remove oil cooler using the follow steps: Loosen 2 clips and disconnect 2 hoses. Remove 4 bolts and oil cooler. Remove 8 bolts, 2 oil cooler brackets and 2 stays.
  4. Remove oil cooler pipe bracket using the following steps: Loosen 2 clips and disconnect 2 hoses. Remove 2 bolts and oil cooler pipe bracket. Loosen 2 clips and disconnect 2 hoses.

Installation

To install, reverse order of removal. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .

  1. Remove engine undercover No. 2.
  2. Disconnect PNP switch connector.
  3. Remove nut and shift lever with shift rod. (Scheme 91)
  4. Remove PNP switch using the following steps: Pry off lock washer and remove nut. (Scheme 92) Remove bolt and PNP switch.
  1. Install PNP switch using the following steps: Install PNP switch with bolt. Tighten bolt to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156576-S08856031722003072200000). Install new lock washer and nut. Tighten to specification. Bend claws on lock washer to stake nut. (Scheme 92) Adjust PNP switch operation. See «PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH»(ref-156576-S38065353192003072200000) under ADJUSTMENTS.
  2. Install shift lever, with attached shift rod, to PNP switch with nut. (Scheme 91)
  3. Connect PNP switch connector.
  4. Install engine undercover No. 2.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2. Remove engine undercover No. 2.
  3. Remove drain plug with gasket and drain automatic transmission fluid.
  4. Remove oil pan. See «DRAINING & REFILLING»(ref-156576-S38151634212003072200000) under LUBRICATION.
  5. Remove oil filter. See «DRAINING & REFILLING»(ref-156576-S38151634212003072200000) under LUBRICATION.
  6. Remove solenoid valve wiring with ATF temperature sensor using the following steps: Disconnect 7 connectors from solenoid valves. Remove 2 bolts and temperature sensor clamps from valve body. (Scheme 93) Disconnect 2 ATF temperature sensors.
  7. Remove valve body assembly using the following steps: Remove 19 bolts to remove valve body. (Scheme 94) Remove 3 drum seal gaskets.
  8. Remove solenoid valves using the following steps: Remove 2 bolts and solenoid valve SR. Remove 3 bolts and solenoid valves S1 and S2. Remove 2 bolts, 2 lock plates, and 4 straight pins. (Scheme 95) Remove solenoid valves SL2 and SLU. Remove solenoid valves SL1 and SLT. Remove "O" ring from solenoid valve S2.
  1. Install solenoid valves using the following steps: Install new "O" ring to solenoid valve S2. Install solenoid valves SL1 and SLT. Install solenoid valves SL2 and SLU. Install 4 straight pins and 2 lock plates with 2 bolts. (Scheme 95) Install solenoid valves S1 and S2 with 3 bolts. Install solenoid valve SR with 2 bolts.
  2. Install valve body using the following steps: Align groove of manual valve with pin of lever. (Scheme 96) Install 3 new drum seal gaskets to transmission case. Install 19 bolts. (Scheme 94) Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156576-S08856031722003072200000).
  3. Connect 2 ATF temperature sensors to valve body and install 2 temperature sensor clamps with 2 bolts. Orange is linear control sensor. Blue is oil temperature warning lamp. (Scheme 93)
  4. Connect 7 connectors to solenoid valves.
  5. Install oil filter. See «DRAINING & REFILLING»(ref-156576-S38151634212003072200000) under LUBRICATION.
  6. Install oil pan. See «DRAINING & REFILLING»(ref-156576-S38151634212003072200000) under LUBRICATION.
  7. Install new gasket and drain plug. Tighten drain plug to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156576-S08856031722003072200000).
  8. Lower vehicle.
  9. Fill and inspect automatic transmission fluid. See «DRAINING & REFILLING»(ref-156576-S38151634212003072200000) under LUBRICATION.
  10. Install engine undercover No. 2.
