  1. DRAIN DIFFERENTIAL OIL Stop the vehicle on a level place. for Front Differential: Using a 10 mm hexagon wrench, remove the filler plug and gasket. Using a 10 mm hexagon wrench, remove the drain plug and gasket, and drain the oil. Using a 10 mm hexagon wrench, install a new gasket and the drain plug. Torque: 39 N*m (398 kgf*cm, 29 ft.*lbf) for Rear Differential: Using a 10 mm hexagon wrench, remove the filler plug and gasket. Using a 10 mm hexagon wrench, remove the drain plug and gasket, and drain the oil. Using a 10 mm hexagon wrench, install a new gasket and the drain plug. Torque: 49 N*m (500 kgf*cm, 37 ft.*lbf)
  2. ADD DIFFERENTIAL OIL for Front Differential: Add differential oil so that the oil level is between 0 to 5 mm (0 to 0.197 in.) from the bottom lip of the differential filler plug hole. NOTE: Too much or too little oil will lead to differential problems. After changing the oil, drive the vehicle and then check the oil level again. Oil type: Toyota Genuine Differential Gear Oil LT 75W-85 GL-5 or equivalent. Capacity: 0.7 to 0.8 liters (0.74 to 0.84 US qts., 0.62 to 0.70 lmp. qts.) Using a 10 mm hexagon wrench, install a new gasket and the filler plug. Torque: 39 N*m (398 kgf*cm, 29 ft.*lbf) for Rear Differential: Add differential oil so that the oil level is between 0 to 5 mm (0 to 0.197 in.) from the bottom lip of the differential filler plug hole. NOTE: Too much or too little oil will lead to differential problems. After changing the oil, drive the vehicle and then check the oil level again.   15. REPLACE FRONT DIFFERENTIAL DRIVE PINION BEARING SPACER Replace the drive pinion bearing spacer with a new one and install it to the drive pinion.
  16. INSTALL DIFFERENTIAL DRIVE PINION WITH BEARING INNER RACE Using SST and the companion flange, install the drive pinion. SST 09950-30012 (09951-03010, 09953-03010, 09954-03010, 09955-03040, 09956-03060) HINT: Before using SST center bolt, apply hypoid gear oil to its threads and tip. Using SST, remove the companion flange.

  18. INSTALL FRONT DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER OIL SEAL Using SST and a hammer, tap in a new oil seal. SST 09309-36010,09502-24010 Standard depth: 6.2 to 7.2 mm (0.0244 to 0.0283 in.) NOTE: Using a vernier caliper, measure the depth of the oil seal. Measure at 3 or more areas around the circumference of the oil seal Make sure the difference between the maximum and minimum measured values is less than 0.75 mm (0.0295 in.), as a greater difference may lead to oil leaks. Tap the oil seal uniformly so that the oil seal is straight. Do not excessively tap the oil seal. HINT: First, uniformly tap in the oil seal until it is flush with the edge of the carrier, then tap it little by little until the depth is within the standard range. Apply MP grease to the lip of the oil seal.

Do not excessively tap the oil seal. Make sure the difference between the maximum and minimum measured values is less than 0.57 mm (0.0224 in.), as a greater difference may lead to oil leaks. Coat the lip of the oil seal with MP grease. for RH: Using SST, remove the oil seal RH. SST 09308-00010 Using SST and a hammer, tap in a new oil seal RH to the differential carrier assembly. SST 09550-60010 (09951-00570), 09950-70010(09951-07100) Standard depth: 1.0 to 2.0 mm (0.0394 to 0.0787 in.) NOTE: Tap the oil seal uniformly so that the oil seal is straight. Do not excessively tap the oil seal. Make sure the difference between the maximum and minimum measured values is less than 0.47 mm (0.0185 in.), as a greater difference may lead to oil leaks. Coat the lip of the oil seal with MP grease. Remove the differential carrier from the overhaul stand.

  1. FIX FRONT DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER ASSEMBLY TO OVERHAUL STAND Set the differential carrier to an overhaul stand as shown in the illustration.
  2. INSPECT DIFFERENTIAL RING GEAR BACKLASH Set a lever probe to a dial indicator. Insert the probe into the drain plug hole and set it onto the edge of one of the teeth of the ring gear at a right angle. Using SST, turn the differential case clockwise and counterclockwise and measure the ring gear backlash while holding the companion flange with your hand. SST 09564-50010 Standard backlash: 0.13 to 0.23 mm (0.00512 to 0.00905 in.) HINT: Measure at 3 or more areas around the circumference of the ring gear. For reassembly purposes, record the result before disassembly. If the backlash is not within the specified range, adjust the ring gear backlash or repair as necessary.
  3. INSPECT RUNOUT OF FRONT DRIVE PINION COMPANION FLANGE FRONT SUB-ASSEMBLY Wipe the inside surface of the companion flange with a cloth or equivalent and remove dirt and foreign matter. Perform the vertical runout inspection. Set a lever probe to a dial indicator and set the probe at a right angle to the inner surface of the companion flange. Measure the vertical runout of the companion flange. Maximum runout: 0.12 mm (0.00472 in.) If the runout is greater than the maximum value, replace the companion flange. HINT: For reassembly purposes, record the result before disassembly. Perform the horizontal runout inspection. Set a dial indicator at a right angle to the surface of the companion flange as shown in the illustration. Measure the lateral runout of the companion flange. Maximum runout: 0.08 mm (0.00314 in.) If the runout is greater than the maximum value, replace the companion flange. HINT: For reassembly purposes, record the result before disassembly.
  4. REMOVE FRONT DIFFERENTIAL BREATHER PLUG Remove the differential breather plug from the differential carrier.
  5. REMOVE FRONT DIFFERENTIAL CASE OIL SEAL Using SST, remove the oil seal LH from the differential carrier. SST 09308-00010 Using SST, remove the oil seal RH from the differential carrier. SST 09308-00010
  6. REMOVE FRONT DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER RETAINER SUB-ASSEMBLY Loosen the 11 bolts. Remove the differential carrier from the overhaul attachment. Remove the 11 bolts. Insert the blade of an oil pan seal cutter between the differential carrier and differential carrier retainer. Cut through the applied seal packing. NOTE: Do not damage the installation surface of the differential carrier. Using a brass bar and hammer, lightly tap the retainer to remove it from the differential carrier.
  7. REMOVE NO. 1 FRONT DIFFERENTIAL CASE SUB-ASSEMBLY Remove the differential case from the differential carrier. NOTE: Do not damage the differential case bearing and ring gear.
  8. INSPECT TOOTH CONTACT BETWEEN RING GEAR AND DRIVE PINION Uniformly apply a light coat of Prussian blue on both sides of 4 teeth on the differential ring gear. Install the differential case to the differential carrier. Install the retainer with the 11 bolts. Torque: 58 N*m (591 kgf*cm, 43 ft.*lbf) Rotate the companion flange several times in the forward and backward rotation directions. Remove the 11 bolts and retainer. Remove the differential case from the differential carrier. Inspect the tooth contact pattern. HINT: For reassembly purposes, record the result before disassembly.
  9. FIX DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER Fix the differential carrier to the overhaul stand's.
  10. REMOVE FRONT DIFFERENTIAL BREATHER PLUG OIL DEFLECTOR Remove the 2 bolts and differential breather plug oil deflector.
  11. REMOVE FRONT DRIVE PINION COMPANION FLANGE FRONT NUT Using SST and a hammer, unstake the staked part of the drive pinion companion flange nut. SST 09930-00010 NOTE: Be sure to use SST with the tapered surface facing the shaft. Do not grind the tip of SST with a grinder etc. Completely loosen the staked part of the nut when removing it. Do not damage the threads of the drive pinion. Using SST to hold the flange, remove the drive pinion companion flange nut. SST 09213-58013, 09229-55010, 09330-00021 NOTE: Perform the removal while supporting the overhaul attachment.
  12. REMOVE FRONT DRIVE PINION COMPANION FLANGE FRONT SUB-ASSEMBLY Using SST, remove the companion flange from the differential carrier. SST 09950-30012 (09951-03010, 09953-03010, 09954-03010, 09955-03030, 09956-03020) HINT: Before using SST center bolt, apply hypoid gear oil to its threads and tip.
  13. REMOVE FRONT DIFFERENTIAL DUST DEFLECTOR Using SST and a press, press out the dust deflector from the companion flange. SST 09950-00020, 09950-60010 (09951-00430), 09950-70010 (09951-07100) NOTE: Perform this procedure while tightening SST nut to secure the contact surfaces of SST and the dust deflector. Do not drop the companion flange.
  14. REMOVE FRONT DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER OIL SEAL Using a SST, remove the oil seal from the differential carrier. SST 09308-00010
  15. REMOVE FRONT DIFFERENTIAL DRIVE PINION OIL SLINGER Remove the drive pinion oil slinger from the differential carrier.
  16. REMOVE FRONT DRIVE PINION REAR TAPERED ROLLER BEARING INNER RACE Remove the differential carrier together with the overhaul attachment from the engine stand. Set the differential carrier to an overhaul stand, etc., as shown in the illustration. Using a press, press out the drive pinion. NOTE: Do not drop the drive pinion. Remove the bearing inner race from the differential carrier. Install the differential carrier to the overhaul attachment as it was installed previously. Install the differential carrier together with overhaul attachment to the engine stand.
  17. REMOVE FRONT DIFFERENTIAL DRIVE PINION BEARING SPACER Remove the bearing spacer from the drive pinion.
  18. REMOVE FRONT DRIVE PINION FRONT TAPERED ROLLER BEARING INNER RACE Using SST and a press, remove the front tapered roller bearing inner race from the drive pinion. SST 09950-00020 NOTE: Do not drop the drive pinion. HINT: Perform this procedure while tightening SST nut to secure the contact surfaces of SST and the front tapered roller bearing inner race. If either the drive pinion or the ring gear is damaged, replace both as a set.
  19. REMOVE FRONT DRIVE PINION REAR TAPERED ROLLER BEARING OUTER RACE Using SST, remove the bearing outer race from the differential carrier. SST 09387-00041 (09387-02020)
  20. REMOVE FRONT DRIVE PINION FRONT TAPERED ROLLER BEARING OUTER RACE Using SST and a hammer, tap out the bearing outer race and adjusting shim from the differential carrier. SST 09950-70010 (09951-07150), 09950-60010 (09951-00610, 09951-00650, 09952-06010) HINT: For reassembly purposes, measure the thickness of the adjusting shim, and record the result.
  21. REMOVE FRONT DIFFERENTIAL CASE BEARING OUTER RACE LH Using SST and a press, press out the bearing outer race and case washer from the differential carrier. SST 09950-60010 (09951-00640, 09952-06010), 09950-60020 (09951-00680), 09950-70010 (09951-07100)
  22. REMOVE FRONT DIFFERENTIAL CASE BEARING OUTER RACE RH Using SST and a press, press out the bearing outer race and case washer from the differential carrier. SST 09950-60010 (09951-00500), 09950-70010 (09951-07100, 09951-00330, 09952-06010)
  23. REMOVE DIFFERENTIAL RING GEAR Hold the differential case in a vise between aluminum plates. NOTE: Do not overtighten the vise. Put matchmarks on the ring gear and differential case. Remove the 10 ring gear set bolts. Remove the differential case from the vise. Using a plastic-faced hammer, tap on the ring gear to separate it from the differential case. HINT: Place a cloth on the tooth side of the ring gear to prevent damage.

  1. INSTALL DIFFERENTIAL RING GEAR Clean the differential ring gear set bolt hole. Heat the ring gear to approximately 100°C (212°F) in boiling water. CAUTION: Use thick gloves to protect your hands as the ring gear is hot. Carefully take the ring gear out of the boiling water. After the moisture on the ring gear has completely evaporated, quickly install the ring gear to the differential case. HINT: Align the matchmarks, differential case bolt holes and ring gear screw holes. Hold the differential case in a vise between aluminum plates. NOTE: Do not overtighten the vise. Apply adhesive to the threads and flanges of 10 new ring gear set bolts. Torque: 97 N*m (989 kgf*cm, 72 ft.*lbf) Adhesive: Toyota Genuine Adhesive 1360K, Three Bond 1360K or equivalent NOTE: Tighten the bolts after the ring gear has sufficiently cooled down. Install the differential case bolts by tightening diametrically opposite pairs uniformly in several passes.
  2. INSTALL FRONT DRIVE PINION REAR TAPERED ROLLER BEARING OUTER RACE Using SST, a bolt, nut, and washer, install the bearing outer race to the differential carrier.   3. INSTALL FRONT DRIVE PINION FRONT TAPERED ROLLER BEARING OUTER RACE Install the adjust shim to the differential carrier. HINT: Select a adjusting shim of the same thickness as the one removed. Using SST, a bolt, nut, and washer, install the bearing outer race to the differential carrier. SST 09950-60020 (09951-00730, 09951-00810) NOTE: Do not apply hypoid gear oil to a new bearing.
  4. INSTALL FRONT DRIVE PINION FRONT TAPERED ROLLER BEARING INNER RACE Using SST and a press, press in the front drive pinion front tapered roller bearing inner race to the drive pinion. SST 09309-14020 NOTE: Do not apply hypoid gear oil to a new bearing.
  5. INSTALL FRONT DIFFERENTIAL CASE BEARING OUTER RACE LH Remove the differential carrier from the overhaul attachment. Install the differential case washer to the differential carrier. HINT: If the final gear set (drive pinion and ring gear) or differential case bearing are replaced, select and install the thinnest differential case washer first. If the drive pinion, ring gear or differential case are reused, select and install a differential case washer with the same thickness as the one before the disassembly first. Using SST and a press, press in the case bearing outer race to the differential carrier. SST 09950-60020 (09951-00680, 09951-00790, 09952-06010), 09950-70010 (09951-07100) NOTE: Do not apply hypoid gear oil to a new bearing.
  6. INSTALL FRONT DIFFERENTIAL CASE BEARING OUTER RACE RH Install the differential case washer to the differential carrier retainer. HINT: If the final gear set (drive pinion and ring gear) or differential case bearing are replaced, select and install the thinnest differential case washer first. If the drive pinion, ring gear or differential case are reused, select and install a differential case washer with the same thickness as the one before the disassembly first. Using SST and a press, press in the case bearing outer race to the differential carrier retainer. SST 09950-60020 (09951-00790, 09951-00890, 09952-06010), 09950-70010 (09951-07100) NOTE: Do not apply hypoid gear oil to a new bearing.
  7. INSTALL FRONT DIFFERENTIAL DUST DEFLECTOR Using SST and a press, insert a new dust deflector into the companion flange. SST 09612-30012, 09950-70010 (09951-07100) NOTE: Slowly press in the dust deflector but not excessively. If any burrs remain after pressing in the deflector, remove them.
  8. ADJUST DRIVE PINION PRELOAD Fix the differential carrier with an attachment. Install the drive pinion to the differential carrier, and then install the bearing inner race and oil slinger while supporting the drive pinion by hand. NOTE: Do not apply hypoid gear oil to a new bearing. Do not drop the drive pinion. HINT: Install the spacer and oil seal after performing the ring gear tooth contact pattern inspection adjustment. Using SST, install the companion flange. SST 09950-30012 (09951-03010, 09953-03010, 09954-03010, 09955-03030, 09956-03020) NOTE: As a bearing spacer is not installed, if SST is tightened excessively, SST, the companion flange, and drive pinion will be damaged. Support the drive pinion by hand until SST is installed. Be careful not to drop the drive pinion. HINT: Before using SST center bolt, apply hypoid gear oil to its threads and tip. Install the companion flange so that there is some free play in the drive pinion. Remove SST. Using SST and a torque wrench, tighten the flange nut little by little until it reaches the specified preload. SST 09213-58013, 09330-00021, 09229-55010 Maximum torque: 490 N*m (4997 kgf*cm, 361 ft.*lbf) NOTE: Tighten the nut with a force of 100 N*m (1020 kgf*cm. 74 in.*lbf) while checking the starting torque of the drive pinion. As the bearing spacer is not installed, tighten the flange nut little by little. Do not overtighten the nut. Do not overtighten the nut, as the threads will become damaged. Coat the threads the flange nut and drive pinion with hypoid gear oil LSD. Perform the installment while supporting the overhaul attachment. Using SST and a torque wrench, measure the preload. SST 09229-55010 Drive Pinion Preload (at starting) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bearing Standard New 3.9 to 4.6 N*m (40 to 46 kgf*cm, 35 to 41 in.*lbf) Reused 2.8 to 3.1 N*m (28 to 32 kgf*cm, 25 to 27 in.*lbf) NOTE: For a more accurate measurement, rotate the bearing forward and backward before the inspection. HINT: Record the preload for total preload measurement.
  9. INSTALL DIFFERENTIAL CASE Remove the differential carrier from the overhaul attachment. Install the differential case to the differential carrier. NOTE: Do not damage the case bearing and ring gear.
  10. INSPECT AND ADJUST DIFFERENTIAL RING GEAR BACKLASH Install the retainer to the differential carrier with the 11 bolts. Torque: 58 N*m (591 kgf*cm, 43 ft.*lbf) Install the differential carrier to the overhaul attachment. Set a lever probe to a dial indicator. Insert the probe into the drain plug hole and set it onto the edge of one of the teeth of the ring gear at a right angle. Using SST, turn the differential case clockwise and counterclockwise and measure the ring gear backlash while holding the companion flange with your hand. SST 09564-50010 Standard backlash: 0.13 to 0.23 mm (0.00512 to 0.00905 in.) HINT: Measure at 3 or more areas around the circumference of the ring gear. Record the measured value, as it is used to select the differential case washer. If the result is outside of the standard range, replace the washer with one of a different thickness in accordance with the following procedure. Perform the tooth contact pattern inspection for the differential ring gear and drive pinion. The results will be used as a reference for selecting the differential case washer LH and RH.   11. INSPECT AND ADJUST TOTAL PRELOAD Using SST and a torque wrench, measure the preload with the teeth of the drive pinion and ring gear in contact. SST 09229-55010 Total Preload (at starting) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bearing Standard New 4.8 to 5.7 N*m (49 to 58 kgf*cm, 42 to 50 in.*lbf) Reused 3.3 to 3.9 N*m (34 to 40 kgf*cm, 30 to 35 in.*lbf) HINT: When the value is outside the standard range, adjust using the differential case washer on the ring gear tooth side. When the value is less than the lower limit of the standard range, replace the differential case washer with a thicker one. When the value is more than the upper limit of the standard range, replace the differential case washer with a thinner one. For reassembly purposes, record the measured value. Set a lever probe to a dial indicator. Insert the probe into the drain plug hole and set it onto the edge of one of the teeth of the ring gear at a right angle. Using SST, turn the differential case clockwise and counterclockwise and measure the ring gear backlash while holding the companion flange with your hand. SST 09564-50010 Standard backlash: 0.13 to 0.23 mm (0.00512 to 0.00905 in.) HINT: Measure at 3 or more areas around the circumference of the ring gear. If the backlash is not in the standard range, increase the LH and RH differential case washer by the same amount until the backlash is in the standard range. Record the measured value and use it when selecting the differential case washer. Perform the tooth contact pattern inspection for the differential ring gear and drive pinion. The results will be used as a reference for selecting the differential case washer LH and RH. When adjusting the backlash, adjust to within 0.18 mm (0.00709 in.) of the average of the measurements. Recheck the total preload.
  12. INSPECT TOOTH CONTACT BETWEEN RING GEAR AND DRIVE PINION Remove the differential carrier from the overhaul attachment. Remove the 11 bolts and retainer from the differential carrier. Remove the differential case from the differential carrier. NOTE: Do not damage the case bearing and ring gear. Uniformly apply a light coat of Prussian blue on both sides of 4 teeth on the differential ring gear. Install the differential case to the differential carrier. NOTE: Do not damage the case bearing and ring gear. Install the retainer to the differential carrier with the 11 bolts. Torque: 58 N*m (591 kgf*cm, 43 ft.*lbf) Rotate the companion flange several times in the forward and backward rotation directions. Remove the 11 bolts and retainer from the differential carrier. Remove the differential case from the differential carrier. NOTE: Do not damage the case bearing and ring gear. Inspect the tooth contact pattern. HINT: The patterns indicated by the Prussian blue are the tooth contact locations. NOTE: Check the tooth contact pattern at 4 or more positions around the circumference of the ring gear. If the tooth contact is not proper, select a drive pinion spacer adjust shim from the table and perform the tooth contact pattern inspection again. NOTE: It is possible for the backlash to be adjusted within the standard range in instances of face contact and flank contact.   15. REMOVE FRONT DRIVE PINION COMPANION FLANGE FRONT SUB-ASSEMBLY Using SST, remove the companion flange from the differential carrier. SST 09950-30012 (09951-03010, 09953-03010, 09954-03010, 09955-03030, 09956-03020) HINT: Before using SST center bolt, apply hypoid gear oil to its threads and tip.
  16. REMOVE FRONT DIFFERENTIAL DRIVE PINION OIL SLINGER Remove the oil slinger from the differential carrier.
  17. REMOVE DIFFERENTIAL DRIVE PINION Remove the differential carrier together with the overhaul attachment from the engine stand. Set the differential carrier to an overhaul stand, etc., as shown in the illustration. Using a press, press out the drive pinion and bearing inner race. NOTE: Do not drop the drive pinion and bearing inner race. Install the differential carrier to the overhaul attachment as it was installed previously. Install the differential carrier together with overhaul attachment to the engine stand.
  18. INSTALL FRONT DIFFERENTIAL DRIVE PINION BEARING SPACER Install a new drive pinion bearing spacer to the drive pinion.
  19. INSTALL FRONT DRIVE PINION REAR TAPERED ROLLER BEARING INNER RACE Using SST and the companion flange, press the bearing inner race into the differential carrier. SST 09950-30012 (09951-03010, 09953-03010, 09954-03010, 09955-03040, 09956-03060) NOTE: As the drive pinion is supported by hand until SST is installed, be careful not to drop the drive pinion. Apply grease to the threads and tip of SST center bolt before use. Using SST, remove the companion flange from the differential carrier. HINT: Before using SST center bolt, apply hypoid gear oil to its threads and tip.
  20. INSTALL FRONT DIFFERENTIAL DRIVE PINION OIL SLINGER Install the oil slinger to the differential carrier.
  21. INSTALL FRONT DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER OIL SEAL Using SST and a hammer, tap in a new oil seal. SST 09309-36010,09502-24010 Standard depth: 6.2 to 7.2 mm (0.244 to 0.283 in.) NOTE: Using a vernier caliper, measure the depth of the oil seal. Measure at 3 or more areas around the circumference of the oil seal. Make sure the difference between the maximum and minimum measured values is less than 0.75 mm (0.0295 in.), as a greater difference may lead to oil leaks. Tap the oil seal uniformly so that the oil seal is straight. Do not excessively tap the oil seal. HINT: First, uniformly tap in the oil seal until it is flush with the edge of the carrier, then tap it little by little until the depth is within the standard range. Apply MP grease to the lip of the oil seal.
  22. INSTALL FRONT DIFFERENTIAL BREATHER PLUG OIL DEFLECTOR Install the oil deflector to the differential carrier with the 2 bolts. Torque: 7.0 N*m (71 kgf*cm, 62 in.*lbf)
  23. INSTALL FRONT DRIVE PINION COMPANION FLANGE FRONT SUB-ASSEMBLY Using SST, install the companion flange to the drive pinion. SST 09950-30012 (09951-03010, 09953-03010, 09954-03010, 09955-03040, 09956-03060) NOTE: Do not insert the companion flange excessively as the preload will be adjusted in the following procedure. HINT: Before using SST center bolt, apply hypoid gear oil to its threads and tip.
  24. INSPECT DRIVE PINION PRELOAD Coat the threads of a new drive pinion companion flange front nut with hypoid gear oil LSD. Using SST and a torque wrench, tighten the drive pinion companion flange front nut while checking the preload. SST 09213-58013, 09330-00021, 09229-55010 Maximum torque: 490 N*m (4996 kgf*cm, 361 ft.*lbf) NOTE: Tighten the flange nut little by little to reach the specified preload, being careful not to exceed the maximum torque. Do not overtighten the nut, as the threads will become damaged. Measure the preload after rotating the companion flange several times in the forward and backward directions to make sure the bearing is operating correctly. Perform the installation while supporting the overhaul attachment. Using SST and a torque wrench, measure the drive pinion preload. SST 09229-55010 HINT: Record the drive pinion preload for the total preload inspection. Drive Pinion Preload (at starting) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bearing Standard New 3.9 to 4.6 N*m (40 to 46 kgf*cm, 35 to 40 in.*lbf) Reused 2.8 to 3.1 N*m (28 to 32 kgf*cm, 25 to 27 in.*lbf) NOTE: The bearing spacer is made of plastic and changes shape when used. If the starting torque of the drive pinion is exceeded by mistake, make sure to replace the bearing spacer with a new one. HINT: If the preload is insufficient, tighten the nut 5 to 10° at a time until the preload is in the standard range. If the tightening torque of the flange nut exceeds the specified torque but the preload is still insufficient, loosen the flange nut. Then check if the flange nut and drive pinion threads are damaged. If there are no problems, replace the bearing spacer, apply hypoid gear oil LSD to the threads of the drive pinion companion flange front nut and repeat the procedure above.
  25. INSTALL NO. 1 FRONT DIFFERENTIAL CASE SUB-ASSEMBLY Remove the differential carrier from the overhaul attachment. Install the differential case to the differential carrier. NOTE: Do not damage the case bearing and ring gear.
  26. INSTALL FRONT DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER RETAINER SUB-ASSEMBLY Remove the seal packing attached on the differential carrier and side bearing retainer using a scraper and wire brush. NOTE: Do not scratch the fitting surface. Check that there is no foreign matter or damage on the installation surface of the side bearing retainer. Apply seal packing to the differential carrier as shown in the illustration. Seal packing: Toyota Genuine Seal Packing 1281, Three bond 1281 or equivalent NOTE: Apply the seal packing in a continuous line, approximately 2 to 3 mm (0.0787 to 0.118 in.) in diameter. Overlap the seal packing at least 10 mm (0.394 in.) at the beginning and the end of application. Install the differential carrier cover within 3 minutes of application. Install the retainer with the 11 bolts. Torque: 58 N*m (591 kgf*cm, 43 ft.*lbf) NOTE: Do not fill the oil or drive immediately after installing the differential carrier cover. Leave the vehicle for at least 1 hour. Also, avoid sudden acceleration and deceleration for at least 12 hours after application. Set the differential carrier to an overhaul stand as shown in the illustration.
  27. INSTALL FRONT DIFFERENTIAL BREATHER PLUG Install the breather plug to the differential carrier. Torque: 21 N*m (214 kgf*cm, 16 ft.*lbf)
  28. INSPECT TOTAL PRELOAD Using SST and a torque wrench, measure the preload with the teeth of the drive pinion and ring gear in contact.   30. INSTALL FRONT DRIVE PINION COMPANION FLANGE FRONT SUB-ASSEMBLY Wipe the inside surface of the companion flange with a cloth or equivalent and remove dirt and foreign matter. Perform the vertical runout inspection. Set a lever probe to a dial indicator and set the probe at a right angle to the inner surface of the companion flange. Measure the vertical runout of the companion flange. Maximum runout: 0.12 mm (0.00472 in.) Perform the lateral runout inspection. Set a dial indicator at a right angle to the surface of the companion flange as shown in the illustration. Measure the horizontal runout of the companion flange. Maximum runout: 0.08 mm (0.00314 in.)
  31. STAKE FRONT DRIVE PINION COMPANION FLANGE FRONT NUT Using SST and a hammer, stake the flange nut. SST 09930-00010

  2. REMOVE REAR DRIVE SHAFT ASSEMBLY Remove the rear drive shaft assembly (See «REMOVAL»(/lexus/ls/iv-2006-2012/remont/driveshaft-universal-joints/#drive-shaft) ).
  3. REMOVE REAR DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER ASSEMBLY Support the rear differential carrier assembly with a transmission jack. CAUTION: As the rear differential carrier assembly is very heavy, securely support it with the transmission jack. Perform this procedure with several people supporting the rear differential carrier assembly so that it does not tilt or fall. Using SST or a 12 mm socket hexagon wrench, remove the 3 bolts (A) from the rear No. 1 and No. 2 differential mount cushions. Remove the 2 bolts (B). Slowly lower the transmission jack. Then remove the rear differential mount stopper upper and lower, and rear differential carrier assembly from the rear suspension member. NOTE: Do not drop the rear differential carrier assembly.   1. REMOVE REAR DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER COVER BREATHER PLUG Remove the breather plug from the differential carrier cover.
  2. REMOVE REAR DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER COVER Remove the 8 bolts from the differential carrier cover. Using a brass bar and a hammer, remove the differential carrier cover from the differential carrier. NOTE: Set the brass bar on the ribbed part of the differential carrier cover. Do not damage the installation surface of the differential carrier.
  3. REMOVE REAR DIFFERENTIAL BREATHER PLUG OIL DEFLECTOR Remove the bolt and oil deflector from the differential carrier cover.
  4. FIX DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER ASSEMBLY REAR Set the differential carrier to an overhaul stand as shown in the illustration. HINT: Install the differential carrier to the back surface side of the ring gear as shown in the illustration.
  5. INSPECT DIFFERENTIAL RING GEAR RUNOUT Place a dial indicator so that it is perpendicular to the back surface of the ring gear. Rotate the ring gear and measure the ring gear runout. Maximum runout: 0.05 mm (0.0020 in.) HINT: If the runout exceeds the specified maximum value, remove the ring gear and check the runout of the differential case.
  6. INSPECT DIFFERENTIAL RING GEAR BACKLASH Place a dial indicator on the tip of the ring gear tooth at a right angle. Fix the companion flange in place, and measure the ring gear backlash. Standard backlash: 0.08 to 0.13 mm (0.0031 to 0.0051 in.) NOTE: Measure the ring gear at 3 or more different places.
  7. INSPECT TOOTH CONTACT BETWEEN RING GEAR AND DRIVE PINION Uniformly apply a light coat of Prussian blue on both sides of 4 teeth on the differential ring gear. Rotate the companion flange several times in the forward and backward rotation directions. Inspect the tooth contact pattern. NOTE: Check the tooth contact pattern at 4 positions around the circumference of the ring gear. HINT: The patterns indicated by the Prussian blue are the tooth contact locations.
  8. INSPECT DIFFERENTIAL SIDE GEAR BACKLASH Place a dial indicator on the tip of the pinion gear tooth at a right angle. old the side gear in the differential case and check that the backlash is 0 mm (0 in.). If not, replace the rear differential case with a new one.
  9. INSPECT RUNOUT OF DIFFERENTIAL DRIVE PINION Using a dial indicator, measure the runout of the drive pinion shaft at a position 10 mm (0.39 in.) from the end of the shaft. Maximum runout: 0.08 mm (0.0031 in.)
  10. INSPECT DIFFERENTIAL DRIVE PINION PRELOAD Using SST and a torque wrench, measure the drive pinion preload. SST 09229-55010 Standard drive pinion preload (at starting): 0.5 to 0.8 N*m (5 to 8 kgf*cm, 4.3 to 6.9 in.*lbf)
  11. INSPECT TOTAL PRELOAD Using SST and a torque wrench, measure the total preload. SST 09229-55010 Standard total preload (at starting): Drive pinion preload plus 0.96 to 2.17 N*m (9.8 to 22.1 kgf*cm, 4.07 to 12.13 in.*lbf)
  12. REMOVE REAR DIFFERENTIAL SIDE GEAR SHAFT OIL SEAL Using SST, tap the 2 oil seals. SST 09308-00010
  13. REMOVE REAR DIFFERENTIAL SIDE GEAR SHAFT SNAP RING Install the 2 bolts and SST to the differential carrier. SST 09571-50010 Tighten SST bolt until SST disc lightly touches the case bearing outer race. Install a dial indicator to the rear differential carrier. Tighten SST bolt and alter the differential carrier's shape to create a 0.1 mm (0.004 in.) clearance between the case bearing outer race and side gear shaft snap ring. NOTE: Observe the dial indicator to ensure that the shape of the differential carrier does not change more than 0.2 mm (0.008 in.). HINT: For reassembly purposes, measure the thickness of the differential side gear shaft snap ring, and record the result. Approximately 0.1 mm (0.004 in.) clearance between the case bearing outer race and the side gear shaft snap ring is sufficient for the washer to move slightly. Using snap ring pliers, remove the side gear shaft snap ring on the ring gear tooth side. HINT: For reassembly purposes, measure the thickness of the differential side gear shaft snap ring, and record the result. Place distinguishing marks on the left and right side differential side gear shaft snap rings to distinguish them (back surface side, tooth side). Then store them separately. Remove the dial indicator from the differential carrier. Loosen SST bolt until SST disc separates from the tooth side of the differential case bearing outer race. HINT: Do not remove SST.
  14. REMOVE REAR DIFFERENTIAL SIDE GEAR SHAFT SNAP RING Using SST and a hammer, create a clearance between the case bearing outer race on the back surface of the ring gear and side gear shaft snap ring. SST 09608-32010, 09950-70010 (09951-07200) HINT: The clearance is not visible, but tapping SST with a hammer 3 or 4 times should be enough. Using snap ring pliers, remove the side gear shaft snap ring on the back surface of the ring gear. HINT: For reassembly purposes, measure the thickness of the differential side gear shaft snap ring, and record the result. Place distinguishing marks on the left and right side differential side gear shaft snap rings to distinguish them (back surface side, tooth side). Then store them separately.
  15. REMOVE REAR DIFFERENTIAL CASE BEARING Tighten SST bolt and push out the case bearing outer race on the back surface of the ring gear. SST 09571-50010 NOTE: Do not drop the case bearing outer race. HINT: For reassembly purposes, mark the installation positions of the differential case bearing outer race and differential side gear shaft snap ring. Place distinguishing marks on the left and right side differential case bearing outer races to distinguish them (back surface side, tooth side). Then store them separately. Remove the 2 bolts and SST from the differential carrier.
  16. REMOVE REAR DIFFERENTIAL CASE BEARING Raise the ring gear of the differential case slightly and remove the ring gear tooth side case bearing outer race. NOTE: Do not drop the case bearing outer race. HINT: For reassembly purposes, mark the installation positions of the differential case bearing outer race and differential side gear shaft snap ring. Place distinguishing marks on the left and right side differential case bearing outer races to distinguish them (back surface side, tooth side). Then store them separately.
  17. REMOVE REAR DIFFERENTIAL CASE SUB-ASSEMBLY Pull out the differential case from the back surface side of the ring gear, and remove it from the differential carrier. NOTE: Do not damage the case bearing.
  18. REMOVE REAR DRIVE PINION NUT Using SST and a hammer, unstake the staked part of the drive pinion nut. SST 09930-00010 NOTE: Be sure to use SST with the tapered surface facing the shaft. Do not grind the tip of SST with a grinder, etc. Completely unstake the drive pinion nut to prevent damaging the threads of the drive pinion. Using SST, fix the companion flange in place.   25. REMOVE REAR DRIVE PINION FRONT TAPERED ROLLER BEARING Remove the rear drive pinion front tapered roller bearing inner race from the differential carrier. Using a brass bar and a hammer, tap out the rear drive pinion front tapered roller bearing outer race from the differential carrier.
  26. REMOVE REAR DRIVE PINION REAR TAPERED ROLLER BEARING Using SST and a press, press out the rear drive pinion rear tapered roller bearing inner race from the drive pinion. SST 09950-00020 NOTE: Perform this procedure while tightening SST nut to secure the contact surfaces of SST and the rear tapered roller bearing inner race. Do not drop the drive pinion. Using a brass bar and a hammer, tap out the rear drive pinion rear tapered roller bearing outer race and drive pinion washer from the differential carrier. NOTE: Make sure to perform this procedure with the brass bar placed on the differential drive pinion washer. Do not damage the differential carrier assembly. HINT: For reassembly purposes, measure the thickness of the differential drive pinion washer, and record the result.
  27. REMOVE DIFFERENTIAL RING GEAR Hold the differential case in a vise between aluminum plates. NOTE: Do not overtighten the vise. Put matchmarks on the ring gear and differential case. Remove the 10 ring gear set bolts. Using a plastic-faced hammer, tap on the ring gear to separate it from the differential case. HINT: Place a cloth on the tooth side of the ring gear to prevent damage.
  28. INSPECT RUNOUT OF REAR DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER ASSEMBLY HINT: Only perform this procedure if the runout exceeded the maximum value during the inspection of the ring gear runout inspection. Install the differential case to the differential carrier. NOTE: Do not damage the case bearing. Using SST and a hammer, tap in the case bearing outer race on the ring gear tooth side. SST 09608-32010, 09950-70010 (09951-07200) HINT: Tap in the case bearing outer race until half of the side gear shaft snap ring groove of the differential carrier can be seen. Install the 2 bolts and SST from the differential carrier. SST 09571-50010 Tighten SST bolt until SST disc lightly touches the case bearing outer race. HINT: Tighten SST bolt to apply preload to the differential case bearing. Using SST and a hammer, tap in the case bearing outer race on the ring gear back surfaces side. SST 09608-32010, 09950-70010 (09951-07200) HINT: Tap in the case bearing outer race until it touches the case bearing inner race roller bearing. Using snap ring pliers, remove the side gear shaft snap ring on the back surface of the ring gear. Place a dial indicator so that it is perpendicular to the differential case flange face. Using a dial indicator, measure the differential case runout. Maximum runout: 0.05 mm (0.0020 in.) HINT: Do not remove SST. Using snap ring pliers, remove the side gear shaft snap ring on the back surface of the ring gear. Tighten SST bolt to push out the ring gear back surfaces side case bearing outer race. SST 09571-50010 NOTE: Do not drop the case bearing outer race. Remove the 2 bolts and SST from the differential carrier. Raise the ring gear side of the differential case slightly and remove the ring gear tooth side case bearing outer race. Remove the differential case from the differential carrier. NOTE: Do not damage the case bearing.
  29. REMOVE REAR DIFFERENTIAL CASE BEARING HINT: Do not remove the rear differential case bearing unless replacing the differential case or differential case bearing. Hold the differential case in a vise between aluminum plates. NOTE: Do not overtighten the vise. Using SST, remove the case bearing inner race LH and RH from the differential case. SST 09950-40011 (09951-04020, 09952-04010, 09953-04030, 09954-04010, 09955-04061, 09957-04010, 09958-04011), 09950-60010 (09951-00350, 09951-00480, 09952-06010) NOTE: Do not deform the bearing cage if the bearing is to be reused. Hook SST claw from the recess of the differential case to the bearing inner race. Apply grease to the threads and tip of SST center bolt before use.
  30. INSPECT DIFFERENTIAL SIDE GEAR BACKLASH Hold the differential case in a vise between aluminum plates. NOTE: Do not overtighten the vise. Place a dial indicator on the tip of the pinion gear tooth at a right angle. Hold the side gear in the differential case and check that the backlash is 0 mm (0 in.). If the backlash is not as specified, replace the rear differential case with a new one.

  1. INSTALL DIFFERENTIAL RING GEAR Clean the differential ring gear set bolt hole. Heat the ring gear approximately 100°C (212°F) in boiling water. CAUTION: Use thick gloves to protect your hands as the ring gear is hot. Carefully take the ring gear out of the boiling water. After the moisture on the ring gear has completely evaporated, quickly install the ring gear to the differential case. HINT: Align the rear differential case bolt holes and differential ring gear screw holes. Hold the differential case in a vise between aluminum plates. NOTE: Do not overtighten the vise. Apply thread lock adhesive to the threads and flanges of 10 new differential case bolts. NOTE: As the differential case bolts are plastic region tightening bolts, do not reuse them. Temporarily tighten the 10 differential case bolts uniformly in several passes, and then tighten them to the torque specification. Torque: 64 N*m (652 kgf*cm, 47 ft.*lbf) NOTE: Tighten the bolts after the ring gear has sufficiently cooled down. Install the differential case bolts by tightening diametrically opposite pairs uniformly in several passes. Tighten the bolts further by 60° to 90°. NOTE: Tighten the bolts in diametrically opposite pairs.
  2. INSTALL REAR DIFFERENTIAL CASE BEARING Using SST and a press, press in the case bearing inner race LH and RH to the differential case. SST 09950-60010 (09951-00560, 09951-00570), 09950-70010 (09951-07100) NOTE: Do not apply hypoid gear oil to a new bearing. Do not deform the bearing cage. Set SST to the center of the differential case. If the bearing is replaced, replace it with the bearing outer race as a set.
  3. INSTALL REAR DRIVE PINION REAR TAPERED ROLLER BEARING Using SST and a press, press in the rear drive pinion rear tapered roller bearing inner race to the drive pinion. SST 09316-60011 (09316-00031), 09612-10093 (09613-22011) NOTE: Do not apply hypoid gear oil to a new bearing. HINT: Disassemble SST (09613-22011), and only use the pipe part. Using SST and a press, press in the rear drive pinion rear tapered roller bearing outer race and drive pinion washer. SST 09950-70010 (09951-07200), 09255-10012 NOTE: Do not apply hypoid gear oil to a new bearing. HINT: Select a drive pinion washer of the same thickness as the one removed.
  4. INSTALL REAR DRIVE PINION FRONT TAPERED ROLLER BEARING Using SST and a press, press in the rear drive pinion front tapered roller bearing outer race. SST 09950-60020 (09951-00710), 09950-70010 (09951-07100) NOTE: Do not apply hypoid gear oil to a new bearing.
  5. INSTALL REAR DIFFERENTIAL DUST DEFLECTOR HINT: Perform this procedure only when replacing the dust deflector. Using SST and a press, insert a new dust deflector into the companion flange. SST 09316-60011 (09316-00011) NOTE: Slowly press in the dust deflector but not excessively. If any burrs remain after pressing in the deflector, remove them.
  6. INSTALL REAR DRIVE PINION FRONT TAPERED ROLLER BEARING Install the rear drive pinion front tapered roller bearing inner race from the differential carrier.
  7. INSTALL DIFFERENTIAL DRIVE PINION Using SST and a press, press in the differential drive pinion. SST 09316-60011 (09316-00011,09316-00041), 09608-04031 NOTE: Install the spacer and oil seal after performing the ring gear tooth contact pattern inspection adjustment. Make sure the press, SST and drive pinion are in a straight line when pressing. Do not forcefully press in the bearing. Do not apply hypoid gear oil to a new bearing.
  8. INSTALL REAR DIFFERENTIAL DRIVE PINION OIL SLINGER Install the drive pinion oil slinger.
  9. ADJUST DIFFERENTIAL DRIVE PINION PRELOAD Using SST, install the companion flange. SST 09950-30012 (09951-03010, 09954-03010, 09955-03040, 09956-03060) NOTE: Install the companion flange so that there is a slight looseness on the drive pinion because the bearing spacer is not yet installed. Apply grease to the threads and tip of SST center bolt before use. Using SST and a torque wrench, install a new drive pinion nut. SST 09229-55010, 09330-00021, 09950-30012 (09955-03040) Maximum torque: T=490 N*m {5000 kgf*cm 361 ft.*lbf} NOTE: Tighten the nut with a force of 100 N*m (1020 kgf*cm) while checking the starting torque of the drive pinion. As the bearing spacer is not installed, tighten the drive pinion nut little by little. Do not overtighten the nut. Do not overtighten the nut, as the threads will become damaged. Coat the threads the drive pinion nut and drive pinion with hypoid gear oil LSD. Perform the removal while supporting the overhaul attachment. For a more accurate measurement, rotate the bearing forward and backward before the inspection. Using SST and a torque wrench, measure the preload. SST 09229-55010 Standard drive pinion preload (at starting): New bearing: 1.12 to 1.70 N*m (11.4 to 17.3 kgf*cm, 9.9 to 15.0 in.*lbf) Reused bearing: 0.4 to 0.7 N*m (4.1 to 7.2 kgf*cm, 3.5 to 6.2 in.*lbf) NOTE: Record the preload for total preload measurement.
  10. INSTALL REAR DIFFERENTIAL CASE SUB-ASSEMBLY Insert the differential case from the ring gear tooth side to install it. NOTE: Do not damage the case bearing and ring gear.
  11. INSTALL REAR DIFFERENTIAL CASE BEARING Using SST and a hammer, tap in the ring gear tooth side case bearing outer race. SST 09608-32010, 09950-70010 (09951-07200) NOTE: Do not apply hypoid gear oil to a new bearing. HINT: Tap in the case bearing outer race until half of the side gear shaft snap ring groove of the differential carrier can be seen. Install the 2 bolts and SST to the differential carrier. SST 09571-50010 Tighten SST bolt until SST disc lightly touches the case bearing outer race. Using SST and a hammer, tap in the ring gear back surface side case bearing outer race.   12. ADJUST DIFFERENTIAL RING GEAR BACKLASH Using snap ring pliers, install a side gear shaft snap ring on the back surface of the ring gear. If the differential case bearing, ring gear, or drive pinion are reused, select and install a differential side gear shaft snap ring with the same thickness as the one before the disassembly first. Install a dial indicator to the differential carrier. Tighten SST bolt to alter the differential carrier's shape by approximately 0.1 mm (0.004 in.). SST 09571-50010 NOTE: Observe the dial indicator to ensure that the shape of the differential carrier does not change more than 0.2 mm (0.008 in.). HINT: Try to set the dial indicator as close as possible to the differential carrier cover side (upper side in illustration) of the differential case bearing outer race. Tighten SST bolt to apply the preload to the case bearing. Turn the ring gear clockwise and counterclockwise several times. Using a dial indicator, measure the backlash of the ring gear. Standard backlash: 0.08 to 0.13 mm (0.0031 to 0.0051 in.) NOTE: Measure at 3 or more areas around the circumference of the ring gear. HINT: Record the measured value, as it is used to select the differential side gear shaft snap ring. Perform the tooth contact pattern inspection for the differential ring gear and drive pinion. The results will be used as a reference for selecting the differential side gear shaft snap ring. If the measured value is not within the specified range, replace the ring gear side differential side gear shaft snap ring with one of a different thickness in the next step. Loosen the thinnest side gear shaft snap ring on the ring gear tooth side. Using SST and a hammer, tap the ring gear back surface side to create clearance between the differential case bearing outer race and the differential side gear shaft snap ring of the ring gear back surface side. SST 09571-50010 NOTE: Observe the dial indicator to ensure that the shape of the differential carrier does not change more than 0.2 mm (0.008 in.). HINT: Try to set the dial indicator as close as possible to the differential carrier cover side (upper side in illustration) of the differential case bearing outer race. Using snap ring pliers, install a side gear shaft snap ring on the ring gear tooth side. If the backlash is not within the specified range, adjust it to the specified range by increasing or decreasing the thickness of the right and left side differential side gear shaft snap rings equally. Remove the dial indicator and loosen the thinnest side gear shaft snap ring on the ring gear tooth side. HINT: Do not remove SST. Using a plastic-faced hammer, lightly tap the ring tooth side of the differential carrier to stabilize the differential case bearing. Place a dial indicator on the tip of the ring gear tooth at a right angle. Fix the companion flange in place by hand, and measure the ring gear backlash. Standard backlash: 0.08 to 0.13 mm (0.0031 to 0.0051 in.) NOTE: Measure at 3 or more areas around the circumference of the ring gear. If the backlash is small even in one place, replace the ring gear tooth side differential side gear shaft snap ring with a thicker one. HINT: Record the measured value, as it is used to select the differential side gear shaft snap ring. Perform the tooth contact pattern inspection for the differential ring gear and drive pinion. The results will be used as a reference for selecting the differential side gear shaft snap ring. When adjusting the backlash, adjust to within 0.1 mm of the average of the measurements. Remove the 2 bolts and SST from the differential carrier.
  14. ADJUST TOTAL PRELOAD Using SST and a torque wrench, measure the preload with the teeth of the drive pinion and ring gear in contact. SST 09229-55010 Standard total preload (at starting): New bearing: 1.58 to 3.07 N*m (16.1 to 31.3 kgf*cm, 14.0 to 27.2 in.*lbf) Reused bearing: 0.86 to 2.07 N*m (8.8 to 21.1 kgf*cm, 7.6 to 18.3 in.*lbf) If the measured preload is below the standard value, replace the differential side gear shaft snap ring with a thicker one. If the measured preload is above the standard value, replace the differential side gear shaft snap ring with a thinner one. NOTE: If the thickness of the differential side gear shaft snap ring changes 0.02 mm, the total preload will change approximately 0.1 N*m (1.0 kgf*cm). For reassembly purposes, record the measured value. Place a dial indicator on the tip of the ring gear tooth at a right angle. While holding the companion flange, rotate the ring gear and measure the backlash. Standard backlash: 0.08 to 0.13 mm (0.0031 to 0.0051 in.)   15. INSPECT TOOTH CONTACT BETWEEN RING GEAR AND DRIVE PINION Uniformly apply a light coat of Prussian blue on both sides of 4 teeth on the differential ring gear. Rotate the companion flange several times in the forward and backward rotation directions. Inspect the tooth contact pattern. NOTE: Check the tooth contact pattern at 4 or more positions around the circumference of the ring gear. HINT: The patterns indicated by the Prussian blue are the tooth contact locations. If the teeth are not contacting properly, use the following table to select a proper drive pinion washer for correction. NOTE: Make sure to always replace the drive pinion washer with a new one.   19. REMOVE REAR DIFFERENTIAL CASE BEARING Raise the ring gear side of the differential case slightly and remove the ring gear tooth side case bearing outer race. NOTE: Do not drop the case bearing outer race. HINT: For reassembly purposes, mark the installation positions of the differential case bearing outer race and differential side gear shaft snap ring. Place distinguishing marks on the left and right side differential case bearing outer races to distinguish them (back surface side, tooth side). Then store them separately.
  20. REMOVE REAR DIFFERENTIAL CASE SUB-ASSEMBLY Remove the rear differential case. NOTE: Do not damage the case bearing.
  21. REMOVE REAR DRIVE PINION NUT Using SST, fix the companion flange in place. SST 09330-00021, 09950-30012 (09955-03040) Using SST, remove the drive pinion nut from the differential carrier. SST 09229-55010 HINT: Perform the removal while supporting the overhaul attachment.

  26. INSTALL REAR DIFFERENTIAL DRIVE PINION BEARING SPACER Install a new drive pinion bearing spacer to the drive pinion. HINT: The bearing spacer can be installed facing either direction.
  27. INSTALL REAR DRIVE PINION FRONT TAPERED ROLLER BEARING Install the rear drive pinion front tapered roller bearing inner race from the differential carrier.

SST 09316-60011 (09316-00011), 09710-04101 NOTE: Tap the oil seal uniformly so that the oil seal is straight. Do not excessively tap the oil seal. Using a vernier caliper, measure the depth of the oil seal. Standard depth: 0 to 0.5 mm (0 to 0.020 in.) NOTE: Measure at 3 or more areas around the circumference of the oil seal. Make sure difference between the maximum and minimum measured values is less than 0.65 mm, as a greater difference may lead to oil leaks. Apply MP grease to the lip of the oil seal.
  31. INSTALL REAR DRIVE PINION COMPANION FLANGE SUB-ASSEMBLY REAR Using SST, install the companion flange to the drive pinion. SST 09950-30012 (09951-03010, 09953-03010, 09954-03010, 09955-03040, 09956-03060) NOTE: Perform this procedure after aligning the companion flange with the spline of the drive pinion. Apply grease to the threads and tip of SST center bolt before use. Coat the threads of a new drive pinion nut with hypoid gear oil LSD. Use SST to hold the flange and torque the drive pinion nut. SST 09950-30012 (09955-03040) Using SST and a torque wrench, tighten the drive pinion nut while checking the starting torque of the drive pinion. SST 09229-55010,09330-00021 Maximum torque: T=490 N*m {5000 kgf*cm} NOTE: Tighten the nut with a force of 100 N*m (1020 kgf*cm) while checking the starting torque of the drive pinion. Do not overtighten the nut, as the threads will become damaged. Apply hypoid gear oil LSD to the threads of the nut and drive pinion. HINT: Perform the removal while supporting the overhaul attachment.
  32. INSTALL REAR DIFFERENTIAL CASE SUB-ASSEMBLY Insert the differential case from the ring gear tooth side. NOTE: Do not damage the case bearing inner race or ring gear.
  33. INSTALL REAR DIFFERENTIAL CASE BEARING Using SST and a hammer, tap in the ring gear tooth side case bearing outer race. SST 09608-32010, 09950-70010 (09951-07200) HINT: Tap in the case bearing outer race until half of the side gear shaft snap ring groove of the differential carrier can be seen. Install the 2 bolts and SST to the differential carrier. SST 09571-50010 Tighten SST bolt until SST disc lightly touches the case bearing outer race. Using SST and a hammer, tap in the ring gear back surface side case bearing outer race. SST 09608-32010, 09950-70010 (09951-07200) HINT: Tap in the case bearing outer race until it touches the case bearing inner race roller bearing.
  34. INSTALL REAR DIFFERENTIAL SIDE GEAR SHAFT SNAP RING Using snap ring pliers, install the side gear shaft snap ring in the differential carrier on the ring gear back surface side. NOTE: Check that the differential side gear shaft snap ring is securely fitted into the groove. HINT: Use the side gear shaft snap ring that was used during the tooth contact adjustment. Install a dial indicator on the differential carrier. Tighten SST bolt, and push in the differential case. NOTE: Observe the dial indicator to ensure that the shape of the differential carrier does not change more than 0.2 mm (0.008 in.). HINT: Try to set the dial indicator as close as possible to the differential carrier cover side (upper side in illustration) of the differential case bearing outer race. The approximate 0.1 mm clearance between the differential case bearing outer race and the differential side gear shaft snap ring only needs to be enough so that the differential side gear shaft snap ring can move slightly. Remove the dial indicator and using snap ring pliers, install the side gear shaft snap ring on the ring gear tooth side. HINT: Use the side gear shaft snap ring that was used during the tooth contact adjustment. Loosen the thinnest side gear shaft snap ring on the ring gear tooth side. Tap the differential carrier on the ring gear tooth side using a plastic-faced hammer to stabilize the case bearing. Remove the 2 bolts and SST from the differential carrier.
  35. ADJUST DIFFERENTIAL DRIVE PINION PRELOAD Using SST and a torque wrench, measure the preload. SST 09229-55010 Standard total preload (at starting): New bearing: 1.22 to 1.80 N*m (12.4 to 18.4 kgf*cm, 10.8 to 15.9 in.*lbf) Reused bearing: 0.5 to 0.8 N*m (5.1 to 8.2 kgf*cm, 4.4 to 7.1 in.*lbf) NOTE: For a more accurate measurement, rotate the flange forward and backward several times before the measurement. Check the starting torque of the drive pinion for use with the total preload inspection. The bearing spacer is made of plastic and changes shape when used. If the starting torque of the drive pinion is exceeded by mistake, make sure to replace the bearing spacer with a new one. If the starting torque of the drive pinion is exceeded, replace the bearing spacer. If the starting torque of the drive pinion is insufficient, tighten the drive pinion nut 5 to 10° at a time. Repeat the adjustment as necessary until the starting torque matches the specified torque. Maximum torque: T=490 N*m (5000 kgf*cm) NOTE: If the tightening torque of the pinion nut exceeds the specified torque but the drive pinion starting torque is still insufficient, loosen the pinion nut. Then check if the pinion nut and drive pinion threads are damaged. If there are no problems, replace the bearing spacer, apply hypoid gear oil LSD to its threads and repeat the procedure above.
  36. INSPECT TOTAL PRELOAD Using SST and a torque wrench, measure the total preload. SST 09229-55010 Standard total preload (at starting): New bearing: 1.68 to 3.17 N*m (17.1 to 32.3 kgf*cm, 14.9 to 28.1 in.*lbf) Reused bearing: 0.96 to 2.17 N*m (9.8 to 22.1 kgf*cm, 8.5 to 19.2 in.*lbf)
  37. INSPECT DIFFERENTIAL RING GEAR BACKLASH Place a dial indicator so that it is perpendicular to the top of the ring gear on the tooth side. Fix the companion flange in place, and measure the ring gear backlash. Standard backlash: 0.08 to 0.13 mm (0.0031 to 0.0051 in.) NOTE: Measure at 3 or more areas around the circumference of the ring gear.
  38. INSPECT RUNOUT OF DIFFERENTIAL DRIVE PINION Using a dial indicator, measure the runout of the drive pinion shaft at a position 10 mm (0.39 in.) from the end of the shaft. Maximum runout: 0.08 mm (0.0031 in.)
  39. INSTALL REAR DRIVE PINION NUT Using a chisel and a hammer, stake the drive pinion nut. SST 09930-00010
  40. INSTALL REAR DIFFERENTIAL SIDE GEAR SHAFT OIL SEAL Using SST and a hammer, install 2 new oil seals. SST 09223-15030, 09950-70010 (09951-07150) Standard depth: -0.5 to 0.5 mm (-0.020 to 0.020 in.) NOTE: Tap the oil seal uniformly so that the oil seal is straight. After the installation, check that the oil seal has been tapped securely onto the differential. Apply MP grease to the lips of the oil seal.
  41. INSTALL REAR DIFFERENTIAL DRAIN PLUG HINT: Perform this procedure as necessary. Using a 10 mm socket hexagon wrench, install a new gasket and drain plug to the rear differential carrier. Torque: 49 N*m (500 kgf*cm, 36 ft.*lbf)
  42. INSTALL REAR DIFFERENTIAL FILLER PLUG HINT: Perform this procedure as necessary. Using a 10 mm socket hexagon wrench, install a new gasket and filler plug to the rear differential carrier. Torque: 49 N*m (500 kgf*cm, 36 ft.*lbf)
  43. REMOVE REAR DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER ASSEMBLY Remove the differential carrier from the overhaul attachment.
  44. INSTALL REAR DIFFERENTIAL BREATHER PLUG OIL DEFLECTOR Clean the seal packing attached on the differential carrier and carrier cover using a scraper and wire brush. Then remove the oil with a non-residue solvent or equivalent. NOTE: Do not scratch the fitting surface. Install the rear differential breather plug oil deflector to the rear differential carrier cover with the bolt. Torque: 7.0 N*m (72 kgf*cm, 62 ft.*lbf)
  45. INSTALL REAR DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER COVER Apply seal packing to the differential carrier as shown in the illustration. Seal packing: Toyota Genuine Seal Packing 1281, Three bond 1281 or equivalent NOTE: Apply the seal packing in a continuous line, approximately 2 to 3 mm (0.08 to 0.12 in.) in diameter. Overlap the seal packing at least 10 mm at the beginning and the end of application. Install the differential carrier cover within 3 minutes of application. Install the differential carrier cover with the 8 bolts. Torque: 47 N*m (475 kgf*cm, 35 ft.*lbf) NOTE: Do not fill the oil or drive immediately after installing the differential carrier cover. Leave the vehicle for at least 1 hour. Also, avoid sudden acceleration and deceleration for at least 72 hours after application.
  46. INSTALL REAR DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER COVER BREATHER PLUG Install the breather plug to the carrier cover. Torque: 21 N*m (210 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf)

  1. INSTALL REAR DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER ASSEMBLY Place the rear differential carrier assembly on a transmission jack. CAUTION: As the rear differential carrier assembly is very heavy, securely support it with the transmission jack. Perform this procedure with several people supporting the rear differential carrier assembly so that it does not tilt or fall. Slowly raise the transmission jack so that the rear differential carrier is at its installation position. NOTE: When installing the rear differential carrier assembly, do not damage the installation surface. Temporarily install the mount stopper upper and lower with 2 new bolts (B). Temporarily install 2 new bolts (A). Temporarily install a new bolt (C). Using SST and a 12 mm socket hexagon wrench, tighten the 2 bolts (A). SST 09249-63010 Torque: without SST 142 N*m (1450 kgf*cm, 105 ft.*lbf) with SST 103 N*m (1054 kgf*cm, 76 ft.*lbf) NOTE: Use a torque wrench with a fulcrum length of 400 mm (16 in.) Tighten the bolts so that they do not interfere with the bolt holes of the mount cushions. Using SST and a 12 mm socket hexagon wrench, tighten the bolt (C).   8. REMOVE REAR DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER ASSEMBLY WITH DRIVE SHAFT Support the rear differential carrier assembly (with drive shaft) with a transmission jack. CAUTION: As the rear differential carrier assembly (with drive shaft) is very heavy, securely support it with the transmission jack. Perform this procedure with several people supporting the rear differential carrier assembly (with drive shaft) so that it does not tilt or fall. Using SST or a 12 mm socket hexagon wrench, remove the 3 bolts (A) from the rear No. 1 and No. 2 differential mount cushions. SST 09249-63010 Remove the 2 bolts (B). Slowly lower the transmission jack. Then remove the rear differential mount stopper upper and lower, and rear differential carrier assembly from the rear suspension member. NOTE: Do not drop the rear differential carrier assembly (with drive shaft). When removing the rear differential carrier assembly (with drive shaft), do not damage the installation surface.
  9. REMOVE REAR SUSPENSION MEMBER SUB-ASSEMBLY Support the rear suspension member with an engine lift and attachments. CAUTION: As the rear differential carrier assembly (with drive shaft) is very heavy, securely support it with the transmission jack. Perform this procedure with several people supporting the rear differential carrier assembly (with drive shaft) so that it does not tilt or fall. Removing the parking brake actuator harness and release cable. Disconnect the trunk interior's parking brake actuator grommet and connector. Remove the clamps shown in the illustration. Remove the 2 nuts, and the release cable. For Normal Package Remove the 4 bolts. Then remove the 2 rear suspension member stopper lowers, and the 2 differential support member stopper lowers. For Sports Package Remove the 8 bolts. Then remove the rear suspension member stopper lower RH and LH, and the 2 differential support member stopper lowers. Lower the engine lift slowly, and remove the rear suspension member.
  10. REMOVE REAR SUSPENSION MEMBER DAMPER Remove the 3 bolts, and the rear suspension member damper.
  11. REMOVE REAR NO. 1 DIFFERENTIAL MOUNT CUSHION Pass SST bolts through the area shown in the illustration, and remove the mount cushion No. 1. SST 09316-12010, 09570-24011 NOTE: When removing the mount cushion No. 1, do not allow the rear suspension member to contact SST (09316-12010). Before using SST bolts, apply hypoid gear oil to their threads. Be sure to combine SST properly. Do not install SST bolts at an angle. Make sure SST bolts are tightened equally.
  12. REMOVE REAR NO. 2 DIFFERENTIAL MOUNT CUSHION Pass SST bolt through the area shown in the illustration, and remove the mount cushion No. 2. SST 09316-12010,09570-24011 NOTE: When removing the mount cushion No. 2, do not allow the rear suspension member to contact SST (09316-12010). Before using SST bolt, apply hypoid gear oil to its threads. Be sure to combine SST properly. Do not install SST bolts at an angle.

  1. INSTALL REAR NO. 1 DIFFERENTIAL MOUNT CUSHION Pass SST bolts through the area shown in the illustration, and install the mount cushion No. 1. SST 09570-24011 NOTE: Make sure the mount cushion installation angle misalignment is not over +-3 Make sure the mount cushion is not at an angle by first temporarily installing the mount cushion to the member before installing SST. Before using SST bolts, apply hypoid gear oil to their threads. Be sure to combine SST properly. Confirm that SST contacts the entire seat surface of the mount cushion. Do not install SST bolts at an angle. Make sure SST bolts are tightened equally.
  2. INSTALL REAR NO. 2 DIFFERENTIAL MOUNT CUSHION Pass SST bolt through the area shown in the illustration, and install the mount cushion No. 2. SST 09570-24011 NOTE: Make sure the mount cushion installation angle misalignment is not over +-3. Make sure the mount cushion is not at an angle by first temporarily installing the mount cushion to the member before installing SST. Before using SST bolt, apply hypoid gear oil to their threads.   3. REMOVE REAR SUSPENSION MEMBER DAMPER Install the rear suspension member damper with the 3 bolts. Torque: 25 N*m (255 kgf*cm, 18 ft.*lbf)
  4. INSTALL REAR SUSPENSION MEMBER SUB-ASSEMBLY Support the rear suspension member with an engine lift and attachments. CAUTION: As the rear suspension member is very heavy, securely support it with an engine lifter with attachments. Perform this procedure with several people supporting the rear suspension member so that it does not tilt or fall. Slowly raise the engine lift so that the rear suspension member is at its installation position. For Normal Package Install the 2 rear suspension member stopper lowers, and the 2 differential support member stopper lowers with the 4 bolts. Torque: 127 N*m (1300 kgf*cm, 94 ft.*lbf) For Sports Package Install the 2 rear suspension member stopper lower LH and RH, and the 2 differential support member stopper lowers with the 8 bolts. Torque: A 127 N*m (1300 kgf*cm, 94 ft.*lbf) B 19 N*m (195 kgf*cm, 14 ft.*lbf) Connecting the harness and cable of the parking brake unit. Connect the cable with the 2 nuts. Torque: 8.0 N*m (82 kgf*cm, 71 in.*lbf) Connect the clamps shown in the illustration. Connect the trunk interior's parking brake actuator grommet and connector.
  5. INSTALL REAR DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER ASSEMBLY WITH DRIVE SHAFT Place the rear differential carrier assembly (with drive shaft) on a transmission jack. CAUTION: As the rear differential carrier assembly (with drive shaft) is very heavy, securely support it with the transmission jack. Perform this procedure with several people supporting the rear differential carrier assembly (with drive shaft) so that it does not tilt or fall. Slowly raise the transmission jack so that the rear differential carrier (with drive shaft) is at its installation position. NOTE: When installing the rear differential carrier assembly (with drive shaft), do not damage the installation surface. Temporarily install the mount stopper upper and lower with 2 new bolts (B). Temporarily install 2 new bolts (A). Temporarily install a new bolt (C). Using SST and a 12 mm socket hexagon wrench, tighten the 2 bolts (A).
