Power Tilt Steering Column Systems: Removal & Installation Lexus LS III

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

WARNINGDeactivate air bag system before performing any service operation. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. DO NOT apply electrical power to any component on steering column without first deactivating air bag system. Air bag may deploy.

Note. Individual component removal and installation procedures are not available from manufacturer. Steering column removal and installation procedures are provided to aid in removing some power tilt and telescopic steering system components.

Removal

  1. Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position. Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect and shield negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds. Remove steering wheel lower cover and switch cover. Loosen 2 Torx screws until groove along screw circumference catches on screw case. WARNING: Place steering wheel pad (air bag module) face up while working on vehicle. DO NOT attempt to disassemble air bag module. Severe injury or damage may occur if air bag accidentally deploys.
  2. Lift steering wheel pad (air bag module) from steering wheel, and disconnect air bag harness connector. Place steering wheel pad on a flat surface, with pad cover facing upward. Remove steering wheel nut. Before removing steering wheel, reference mark steering wheel in relation to steering shaft for reassembly. Using steering wheel puller, remove steering wheel from column.
  3. Remove 2 screws securing under cover. (Scheme 3) Disconnect 2 harness connectors and DLC3 from undercover. Remove 2 screws and DLC3. Remove under cover. Remove finish plate and end pad. Remove 2 screws and disconnect hood release lever from safety pad. Remove 2 bolts from safety pad. Disconnect connectors and clamps. Remove safety pad.
  4. Remove 3 screws securing lower steering column covers and remove cover. Remove clip and heater to register duct. Remove air sealed plate. Remove bolt, clip and left front fender apron. Make alignment marks on sliding yoke and control shaft before disassembly. Loosen upper sliding yoke-to-intermediate shaft bolt and remove lower bolt securing sliding yoke to control shaft. Disconnect harness connectors.
  5. Loosen hole cover clamp. Remove brake pedal return spring. Disconnect harness connectors from combination switch. Remove screws and combination switch with spiral cable.
  6. Remove 4 nuts securing steering column assembly-to-lower instrument bracket and remove steering column assembly. Remove column hole cover and clamp from No. 2 intermediate shaft assembly. Remove upper bolt and disconnect sliding yoke from intermediate shaft. Make alignment marks on No. 2 intermediate shaft assembly and main shaft assembly before disassembly. Remove bolt and No. 2 intermediate shaft assembly from main shaft.

Installation

WARNINGDuring installation, if spiral cable mating mark is not properly aligned, steering wheel may not turn completely, or flat cable inside spiral cable may be severed, disabling SRS.

To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position. Install combination switch. Turn spiral cable counterclockwise until it stops. Turn spiral cable clockwise about 2.5 turns until colored mating mark is aligned. Ensure steering wheel-to-steering shaft reference mark is aligned. Tighten bolts and nuts to specifications.
