Wheel Alignment Specifications & Procedures Lexus LS I

RIDING HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT

Note. On vehicles equipped with air suspension, ensure height control switch is in NORM position before adjusting height. Ensure all systems are functional before adjusting riding height, or aligning wheels.

  1. Before adjusting wheel alignment, check riding height. Check riding height with vehicle on level surface and tires properly inflated. Bounce vehicle several times and allow suspension to settle.   2. Visually inspect vehicle from front to rear or from side to side for abnormal height. Remove extra heavy items from passenger and luggage compartments.
  3. Measure riding height. See «RIDING HEIGHT SPECIFICATIONS»(/lexus/ls/i-1989-1994/remont/wheel-alignment/#wheel-alignment-specifications-procedures). If riding height is not within specification, check, and repair or replace suspension components as necessary.

RIDING HEIGHT SPECIFICATIONS

Scheme 3: LS400 With Air Suspension
  1. Turn height control switch to NORM position. Bounce vehicle up and down several times to stabilize suspension. Move vehicle forward and backward by pushing vehicle to settle tires.
  2. Block wheels. Place transmission in Neutral. Release parking brake. Start engine and place height control switch to HIGH position for one minute. Set height control switch to NORM position. Wait 50 seconds and repeat step 2).
  3. Measure vehicle riding height. See «RIDING HEIGHT SPECIFICATIONS»(/lexus/ls/i-1989-1994/remont/wheel-alignment/#wheel-alignment-specifications-procedures). If riding height is not as specified, adjust vehicle riding height by turning height control sensor link. (Scheme 3) NOTE: Turning height control sensor link bolt one complete revolution changes vehicle height by about 0.16" (4 mm).   4. To adjust height control sensor link, loosen 2 lock nuts on height control sensor link. Turn height control sensor link bolt to adjust length. Length limit adjustment for front and rear height control sensor link is.51" (13 mm). (Scheme 3)
  5. After adjustment, temporarily tighten lock nuts. Recheck vehicle riding height. Readjust if necessary. Tighten lock nuts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/lexus/ls/i-1989-1994/remont/wheel-alignment/#wheel-alignment-specifications-procedures__torque-specifications). Ensure ball joint and bracket are parallel when tightening lock nuts. (Scheme 3)

FLOOR JACK

Place floor jack on vehicle support points shown. (Scheme 4)or (Scheme 5).

EMERGENCY JACKING

Place manufacturer-supplied jack on reinforced support points of side body panel (between front and rear wheels). Safety stands may also be placed at these points.

HOIST

Place lift blocks on reinforced support points of side body panels (between front and rear wheels). (Scheme 4)or (Scheme 5).

ES250 Front Suspension

  1. Check tires for wear and improper inflation. Check front wheel bearings for looseness. Check wheel runout. Wheel runout should not exceed .039" (1 mm).
  2. Check front suspension components for looseness. Ensure front shock absorbers work properly. Check vehicle riding height. See «RIDING HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT»(/lexus/ls/i-1989-1994/remont/wheel-alignment/#wheel-alignment-specifications-procedures__riding-height-adjustment) .
  3. Check camber of both front wheels. See «WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS»(/lexus/ls/i-1989-1994/remont/wheel-alignment/#wheel-alignment-specifications-procedures) . If camber is not within specification, inspect and replace any damaged or worn front suspension components. Camber is not adjustable.

ES250 Rear Suspension

Check tires for wear and improper inflation. Check camber of both rear wheels. See WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS . If camber is not within specification, inspect and replace any damaged or worn rear suspension components. Rear camber is not adjustable.

LS400 Front Suspension

  1. Check tires for wear and improper inflation. Check front wheel bearings for looseness. Check wheel runout. Wheel runout should not exceed.055" (1.4 mm).
  2. Check front suspension components for looseness. Ensure front shock absorbers work properly. Check vehicle riding height. See «RIDING HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT»(/lexus/ls/i-1989-1994/remont/wheel-alignment/#wheel-alignment-specifications-procedures__riding-height-adjustment).
  3. Check camber of both front wheels. See «WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS»(/lexus/ls/i-1989-1994/remont/wheel-alignment/#wheel-alignment-specifications-procedures). If camber is not within specification, loosen camber adjustment cam. (Scheme 6) Camber angle changes by 7 1/2 minutes (fraction: 7 1/2, decimal: 7.500) with each graduation on adjustment cam.

LS400 Rear Suspension

Check tires for wear and improper inflation. Ensure length of No. 1 and 2 lower suspension arms are equal. (Scheme 7) Check camber of both rear wheels. See WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS. If camber is not within specification, adjust camber by turning adjustment cams. (Scheme 9)

Ensure riding height, camber and steering axis inclination are correctly set. See RIDING HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT .

Also see CAMBER ADJUSTMENT and STEERING AXIS INCLINATION under WHEEL ALIGNMENT PROCEDURES . Check caster of both front wheels. See WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS . If caster is not within specification, adjust angle by adding or removing spacers. Caster angle changes by 1/2 minutes (fraction: 1/2, decimal: .500) with each spacer. DO NOT use more than 2 spacers to adjust caster.

Ensure riding height, camber and steering axis inclination are correctly set. See RIDING HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT .

Also see CAMBER ADJUSTMENT and STEERING AXIS INCLINATION under WHEEL ALIGNMENT PROCEDURES. Check caster of both front wheels. If caster is not within specification, adjust angle by loosening strut bar nuts and changing length of strut bar(s). (Scheme 6)

STEERING AXIS INCLINATION

Ensure riding height and camber are correctly set. See RIDING HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT .

Also see CAMBER ADJUSTMENT under WHEEL ALIGNMENT PROCEDURES. Check steering axis inclination of both front wheels. See WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS . If steering axis inclination is not within specification, inspect and replace any damaged or worn front suspension components. Steering axis inclination is not adjustable.

Front Suspension

Ensure riding height, camber, steering axis inclination and caster are correctly set. See RIDING HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT .

Also see CAMBER ADJUSTMENT, STEERING AXIS INCLINATION and CASTER ADJUSTMENT under WHEEL ALIGNMENT PROCEDURES. Ensure steering wheel is in a straight-ahead position. Bounce both ends of vehicle several times to settle suspension. Measure toe-in. See WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS . If necessary, adjust toe-in by varying length of tie rods.

  1. Ensure rear camber is correctly set. See «CAMBER ADJUSTMENT»(/lexus/ls/i-1989-1994/remont/wheel-alignment/#wheel-alignment-specifications-procedures) under WHEEL ALIGNMENT PROCEDURES. Bounce both ends of vehicle several times to settle suspension. Measure distance between each wheel rim and corner of cam bracket to ensure both distances are same.   2. Measure toe-in. See «WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS»(/lexus/ls/i-1989-1994/remont/wheel-alignment/#wheel-alignment-specifications-procedures). If necessary, adjust toe-in by turning adjustment cams. (Scheme 8) Turning adjustment cam one graduation will change toe by about.06" (1.5 mm).

Ensure rear camber is correctly set. See CAMBER ADJUSTMENT under WHEEL ALIGNMENT PROCEDURES. Bounce both ends of vehicle several times to settle suspension. Measure toe-in. See WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS. If necessary, adjust toe-in by turning adjustment cams. (Scheme 9)

TOE-OUT ON TURNS

  1. Ensure steering wheel is in straight-ahead position. Raise front of vehicle. Place turning radius gauges beneath front wheels. Lower front of vehicle.
  2. Turn steering wheel full right and left, observing turning radius on both wheels. See «WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS»(/lexus/ls/i-1989-1994/remont/wheel-alignment/#wheel-alignment-specifications-procedures) for specifications. If turning radius is incorrect, inspect and replace any damaged or worn front suspension components.
