AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION APPLICATION
LUBRICATION SERVICE INTERVALS
Under normal driving conditions, inspect transmission fluid every 15,000 miles or 24 months, whichever comes first. Under severe driving conditions, replace fluid every 15,000 miles or 24 months.
TRANSMISSION & TRANSAXLE
- Check transmission fluid with engine and transmission at 158-176°F (70-80°C). Use cool section of dipstick for a rough estimate when fluid is replaced or engine does not run. Park vehicle on a level surface and set parking brake.
- With engine idling and park brake depressed, move shift lever from "P" to "L" position and return to "P" position. Remove dipstick and clean it. Push it back fully into tube. Pull it out and ensure fluid level is in HOT range. Fill as necessary.
RECOMMENDED FLUID
LS400 automatic transmission uses Type T-IV fluid. ES250 automatic transaxle uses Dexron-II ATF.

TRANSMISSION/TRANSAXLE REFILL CAPACITIES
DRAINING & REFILLING
Note. On ES250, although vehicle is equipped with a transaxle, differential is a separate unit.
- On ES250, remove engine undercover. On all models, remove drain plug and drain fluid. If transmission oil strainer is to be changed, remove oil pan. Remove oil strainer and gasket.
- Clean transmission oil pan and replace pan gasket. Install oil strainer and gasket. Reinstall transmission oil pan. Tighten bolts. Install drain plug. With engine off, add new fluid through dipstick hole.
- Start engine and shift selector into all positions. Shift selector back into "P" position. Check fluid level. Add fluid to bring level up to COOL mark on dipstick.
- Recheck fluid level when engine and transmission reaches operating temperature of 158-176°F (70-80°C). Add fluid up to HOT mark. On ES250, install engine undercover.
THROTTLE CABLE ADJUSTMENTS
- Throttle cable clearance is 0-.04" (0-1 mm). On LS400, remove throttle body cover. On ES250, depress accelerator pedal to floor. Ensure throttle valve opens completely. On LS400, ensure throttle valve is fully closed. Ensure inner cable is not slack.
- On ES250, fully depress accelerator pedal. On all models, measure distance between end of boot and stopper on cable. (Scheme 1) Adjust as necessary. On LS400, install throttle body cover.

SHIFT CABLE ADJUST
- If shift indicator is not aligned with correct position, adjustment is necessary. On ES250, remove left engine undercover. On all models, loosen nut on transmission-mounted shift lever linkage under vehicle. On ES250, push transmission-mounted shift lever fully toward right side of vehicle. On LS400, push transmission-mounted shift lever fully rearward.
- On all models, move transmission-mounted shift lever back to Neutral position. Move in-car shift lever to neutral position. While holding in-car shift lever toward "R" position, tighten shift lever nut. Start engine and ensure shift lever operates properly. On ES250, install left engine undercover.
NEUTRAL START SWITCH ADJUST
If vehicle starts in positions other than Neutral and Park, neutral start switch may need adjusting. To adjust, loosen neutral start switch bolt and set shift lever in Neutral position. Align groove and base line on neutral start switch. (Scheme 2) Hold switch in position and torque bolt to 48 INCH lbs. (5.4 N.m).
