Code Definition

  1. DTC P0441: Incorrect EVAP Purge Flow
  2. DTC P0446: EVAP Vent Control Fault
CAUTIONIf ECM replacement is instructed in following testing, always ensure ECM harness connector and ground circuit are okay. If either are suspect, repair and repeat testing to confirm ECM malfunction. If ECM is replaced, ECM must be programmed with proper ignition key code for engine immobilizer system. Note. Vapor canister and some related components can be accessed through trunk by removing trunk floor mat and protective access cover at front of trunk. For component location, see appropriate illustration in THEORY & OPERATION article.

Circuit Description

Vapor pressure sensor, canister closed valve Vacuum Switching Valve (VSV) and pressure switching valve VSV are used to detect faults in EVAP system. ECM determines if a fault is present in EVAP system based on vapor pressure signal circuit.

DTC P0441 or DTC P0446 is set if EVAP system leak is detected by ECM or if there is a malfunction in EVAP VSV, pressure switching valve VSV, or in vapor pressure sensor. Possible causes are

  1. Disconnected, cracked, damaged or blocked vacuum hose.
  2. Fuel tank cap installed incorrectly.
  3. Damaged fuel tank cap.
  4. Open or short circuit in vapor pressure sensor circuit.
  5. Faulty vapor pressure sensor.
  6. Open or short in EVAP VSV circuit.
  7. Faulty EVAP VSV.
  8. Open or short in canister closed valve VSV circuit.
  9. Faulty canister closed valve VSV.
  10. Open or short in pressure switching valve VSV circuit.
  11. Faulty pressure switching valve VSV.
  12. Damaged fuel tank.
  13. Faulty charcoal canister.
  14. Damaged fuel tank overfill check valve.
  15. Faulty ECM.

Note. If DTC P0441, DTC P0446, DTC P0450 or DTC P0451 is output after DTC P0440, perform appropriate diagnostic test first before performing DTC P0440 diagnostic test.

Diagnostic Aids

Using scan tool, read freeze frame data. Freeze frame records engine conditions when malfunction is detected.
