ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION

  1. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Start the engine and turn the Techstream ON. Warm up the engine. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Active Test / Control the VVT Exhaust Linear (Bank 1) or Control the VVT Exhaust Linear (Bank 2). Check the engine speed while operating the Oil Control Valve (OCV) using the Techstream. Specified Condition Tester Operation Specified Condition -100% Normal engine speed 100% Engine idles roughly If the result is not as specified, check the oil control valve, wiring and camshaft timing exhaust gear. HINT: Control the VVT Exhaust Linear (Bank 1): Command to activate the exhaust side oil control valve of bank 1. Control the VVT Exhaust Linear (Bank 2): Command to activate the exhaust side oil control valve of bank 2.

  1. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below. Standard Resistance Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 1 - 2 20°C (68°F) 6.9 to 7.9 ohms If the result is not as specified, replace the oil control valve. Connect a battery positive (+) lead to terminal 1 and negative (-) lead to terminal 2, and check the movement of the valve. OK Condition Specified Condition Battery positive (+) voltage is applied Valve moves in left arrow direction shown in illustration Battery positive (+) voltage is cut off Valve moves in right arrow direction shown in illustration If the result is not as specified, replace the oil control valve. NOTE: Do not allow foreign matter to contact the oil seal face of the oil control valve (the surface that contacts the cylinder head cover sub-assembly). HINT: If the valve cannot return properly because of foreign matter, a small pressure leak in the advance direction may occur and a DTC may be stored.

INSTALLATION

  1. INSTALL CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY LH Apply a light coat of engine oil to a new O-ring, and install it to the camshaft timing oil control valve. Install the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly with the bolt. Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf) NOTE: Do not allow foreign matter to contact the oil seal face of the oil control valve (the surface that contacts the cylinder head cover sub-assembly). Be careful that the O-ring is not cracked or does not jump out of position when installing the oil control valve. Connect the camshaft timing oil control valve connector.
  2. INSTALL CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY RH Apply a light coat of engine oil to a new O-ring, and install it to the camshaft timing oil control valve. Install the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly with the bolt.   1. INSPECT FUNCTION OF CAMSHAFT TIMING CONTROL MOTOR Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream ON. Start the engine and warm it up. Idle the engine. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Active Test / Control the VVT-iE Linear (Bank 1) or Control the VVT-iE Linear (Bank 2). Monitor the output angle of the VVT (VVT-iE Aim Angle (Bank 1) and VVT Change Angle (Bank 1) or VVT-iE Aim Angle (Bank 2) and VVT-iE Change Angle (Bank 2) displayed on the Techstream. Perform the Active Test operation with the engine speed at 1500 rpm. Specified Condition Active Test Movement Order Difference between "MD VVT Aim Angle" and "VVT Change Angle" 0 deg --> 10 deg --> 20 deg --> 40 deg --> 10 deg --> 0 deg --> 10 deg --> END Within 5 DegFR If the result is not as specified, inspect the camshaft timing control motor assembly and camshaft timing gear assembly.

  1. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL WARNING: Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to disable the SRS system. NOTE: When disconnecting the cable, some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected. Refer to «INITIALIZATION»(/lexus/is-f/i-2007-2014/remont/hoistjack/#introduction__initialization) . HINT: Disconnect the cable from the from the negative (-) battery terminal so that the maximum retard angle of the cam timing control with EDU motor assembly will be learned.
  2. REMOVE V-BANK COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY . Refer to «REMOVAL - Step 2»(/lexus/is-f/i-2007-2014/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-service-information)
  3. REMOVE CAMSHAFT TIMING CONTROL WITH EDU MOTOR LH ASSEMBLY Disconnect the engine wire clamp. Disconnect the 2 connectors from the camshaft timing control with EDU motor and engine wire clamp. Remove the 3 bolts and the camshaft timing control with EDU motor LH assembly. Remove the O-ring from the timing chain cover.
  4. REMOVE AIR CLEANER CAP SUB-ASSEMBLY See step 4
  5. REMOVE CAMSHAFT TIMING CONTROL WITH EDU MOTOR RH ASSEMBLY Disconnect the 2 connectors from the camshaft timing control with EDU motor and engine wire clamp. Remove the bolt and engine wire bracket. Remove the 3 bolts and camshaft timing control motor. Remove the O-ring from the timing chain cover.

  1. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING CONTROL MOTOR Rotate the joint of the camshaft timing control motor assembly by hand. Standard Condition The motor rotates smoothly. NOTE: Do not drop the camshaft timing control motor assembly. If dropped, replace the camshaft timing control motor assembly. Do not disassemble the camshaft timing control motor assembly. If disassembled, replace the camshaft timing control motor assembly. Do not allow foreign matter to contact the oil seal face of the camshaft timing control motor (the surface that contacts the timing chain cover sub-assembly). If the result is not as specified, replace the camshaft timing control motor assembly.

  1. INSTALL CAMSHAFT TIMING CONTROL WITH EDU MOTOR LH ASSEMBLY Turn the camshaft timing gear assembly intermediate shaft index slot in the counterclockwise direction by hand, to set it to the maximum retard angle position. HINT: When a camshaft lobe opens a valve, the intermediate shaft becomes difficult to turn. The position where the intermediate shaft stops is the maximum retard angle. Install a new O-ring to the timing chain cover. Align the joint of the camshaft timing control with EDU motor and the keyway of the camshaft timing gear assembly, and install the motor assembly with the 3 bolts. Torque: 21 N*m (214 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf) NOTE: Check that [L] is printed on the label of the camshaft timing control with EDU motor. Do not allow foreign matter to contact the oil seal face of the camshaft timing control with EDU motor (the surface that contacts the timing chain cover sub-assembly). When installing the camshaft timing control with EDU motor, do not use excessive force. Align the timing chain cover sub-assembly knock pin with the camshaft timing control with EDU motor pin hole to install the camshaft timing control with EDU motor. Install the camshaft timing control with EDU motor with the arrow facing upward, as shown in the illustration. Do not drop the camshaft timing control with EDU motor. If dropped, replace it. Do not disassemble the camshaft timing control with EDU motor assembly. If disassembled, replace it. Connect the 2 connectors to the camshaft timing control with EDU motor and engine wire clamp. Connect the engine wire clamp.
  2. INSTALL CAMSHAFT TIMING CONTROL WITH EDU MOTOR RH ASSEMBLY Turn the camshaft timing gear assembly intermediate shaft index slot in the counterclockwise direction by hand, to set it to the maximum retard angle position.   1. CHECK THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY Check the throttle position sensor. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Turn the Techstream ON. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / All Data / Throttle Sensor Position. Start the engine. Firmly depress the brake pedal with your left foot, and move the shift lever to N. Depress the accelerator pedal. When the throttle valve is fully opened, check that the value of "Throttle Sensor Position" is within the specification. Standard throttle valve opening percentage 60% or more HINT: When checking the standard throttle valve opening percentage, the shift lever should be in N. If the percentage is less than 60%, replace the throttle body.

  1. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER
  2. DRAIN ENGINE COOLANT . Refer to «REPLACEMENT - Step 3»(/lexus/is-f/i-2007-2014/remont/cooling-fan/#cooling-service-information)
  3. REMOVE V-BANK COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY . Refer to «REMOVAL - Step 2»(/lexus/is-f/i-2007-2014/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-service-information)
  4. REMOVE AIR CLEANER CAP SUB-ASSEMBLY Loosen the 2 hose clamps and separate the 2 ventilation hoses. Disconnect the mass air flow meter connector and separate the wire harness clamp. Loosen the hose clamp and separate the air cleaner hose. Unlock the 2 clamps and remove the air cleaner cap sub-assembly.
  5. REMOVE THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY Disconnect the throttle body connector. Loosen the hose clamp and separate the No. 5 water by-pass hose. Loosen the hose clamp and separate the No. 4 water by-pass hose. Remove the 2 bolts and 2 nuts. Using a "TORX" socket E6, remove the 2 stud bolts and throttle body assembly. NOTE: Do not damage the water hoses when removing the throttle body assembly. Remove the 2 water by-pass hoses.

  1. INSPECT THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY Check that the throttle valve opens and closes smoothly. Check that there is no carbon accumulated around the throttle plate. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below. Standard Resistance Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 1 (M-) - 2 (M+) 20°C (68°F) 0.3 to 100 ohms If the result is not as specified, replace the throttle body.

Scheme 193: INSTALLATION
  1. INSTALL THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY Connect the No. 4 water by-pass hose and No. 5 water by-pass hose to the throttle body assembly. NOTE: Position the claws of the clamps as shown in the illustration. Set the throttle body assembly and new gasket with the 2 stud bolts. Using a "TORX" socket E6, tighten the 2 stud bolts. Torque: 5.0 N*m (51 kgf*cm, 44 in.*lbf) Install the 2 bolts and 2 nuts. Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf) Connect the No. 4 water by-pass hose with the hose clamp. Connect the No. 5 water by-pass hose with the hose clamp. Connect the throttle body connector.
  2. INSTALL AIR CLEANER CAP SUB-ASSEMBLY Install the air cleaner cap with air cleaner hose and lock the 2 clamps. Connect the air cleaner hose and tighten the hose clamp. Connect the 2 ventilation hoses with the 2 hose clamps. Connect the mass air flow meter connector and wire harness clamp.
  3. ADD ENGINE COOLANT . Refer to «REPLACEMENT - Step 4»(/lexus/is-f/i-2007-2014/remont/cooling-fan/#cooling-service-information)
  4. INSPECT FOR ENGINE COOLANT LEAK . Refer to «ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION - Step 1»(/lexus/is-f/i-2007-2014/remont/cooling-system-mechanical/#cooling-inspection)
  5. INSTALL V-BANK COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY . Refer to «INSTALLATION - Step 1»(/lexus/is-f/i-2007-2014/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-service-information)
  6. INSTALL ENGINE UNDER COVER
  7. PERFORM INITIALIZATION NOTE: Be sure to perform this procedure after replacing the ECM or throttle body or cleaning the throttle valve. Disconnect the cable from negative battery terminal. Wait at least 60 seconds and reconnect the cable to negative battery terminal. Turn the engine switch on (IG) without operating the accelerator pedal. NOTE: If the accelerator pedal is operated, perform the above steps again. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3 and clear the DTCs. Refer to «DTC CHECK / CLEAR»(/lexus/is-f/i-2007-2014/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-diagnostics-introduction__dtc-check-clear) . Start the engine and check that the MIL is not illuminated and that the idle speed is within the specified range when the A/C is switched off after the engine is warmed up. standard Condition Engine Idle Speed A/C switched off 700 to 800 rpm NOTE: Be sure to perform this step with all accessories off. Make sure that the shift lever is in N. Enter the following menus: Powertrain/ Engine and ECT/ Data List/ Throttle Pos. Sensor Output. Fully depress the accelerator pedal and check that the value is 60% or more. Perform a road test and confirm that there are no abnormalities.

  5. REMOVE ENGINE ROOM ECU COVER Remove the 3 bolts and the ECM cover. NOTE: Remove all water from on and around the ECM cover. Perform the inspection indoors to avoid rain. Be sure to prevent water intrusion to the ECM (connectors and screw holes).
  6. REMOVE ECM Disconnect the ECM connectors. Using a screwdriver, disconnect the connector holder. Disconnect the 6 ECM connectors. Remove the 2 nuts and ECM from the ECM box.

  1. INSTALL ECM Install the ECM to the engine room ECU box with the 2 nuts. Torque: 5.5 N*m (56 kgf*cm, 49 in.*lbf) NOTE: Install the ECM on the ECM box with the label facing away from the engine. Make sure that there is no foreign matter on the gasket surface of the ECM box. Insert the stud bolt on the vehicle rear side to the ECM first. Make sure that the stud bolts are securely installed into the front and rear bolt holes. Connect the 6 ECM connectors. NOTE: Be sure to securely connect the connector. Connect the connector holder.
  2. INSTALL ENGINE ROOM ECU COVER Install the ECM cover with the 3 bolts. Torque: 5.5 N*m (56 kgf*cm, 49 in.*lbf)
  3. INSTALL ENGINE ROOM SIDE COVER LH . Refer to «INSTALLATION - Step 93»(/lexus/is-f/i-2007-2014/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-service-information)
  4. INSTALL COOL AIR INTAKE DUCT SEAL . Refer to «INSTALLATION - Step 94»(/lexus/is-f/i-2007-2014/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-service-information)

  8. PERFORM RESET MEMORY NOTE: Perform RESET MEMORY (AT initialization) when replacing the ECM. Refer to «INITIALIZATION»(/lexus/is-f/i-2007-2014/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transmission-diagnostics-introduction) . HINT: Initialization cannot be completed by only disconnecting and reconnecting the cable to the negative (-) battery terminal.
  9. PERFORM REGISTRATION NOTE: Perform Registration (VIN registration) when replacing the ECM. Refer to «REGISTRATION»(/lexus/is-f/i-2007-2014/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-diagnostics-introduction__registration) . HINT: Initialization cannot be completed by only disconnecting and reconnecting the cable to the negative (-) battery terminal.

  1. INSPECT ACCELERATOR PEDAL Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Turn the Techstream ON. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / Accelerator Position No. 1 and accelerator Position No. 2. Read the value displayed on the Techstream.   1. REMOVE ACCELERATOR PEDAL ASSEMBLY Disconnect the accelerator pedal sensor connector. Remove the 2 nuts and accelerator pedal. NOTE: Avoid physical shocks to the accelerator pedal. Do not disassemble the accelerator pedal assembly.
  1. INSTALL ACCELERATOR PEDAL ASSEMBLY Install the accelerator pedal with the 2 nuts. Torque: 5.4 N*m (55 kgf*cm, 48 in.*lbf) NOTE: Avoid physical shocks to the accelerator pedal. Connect the accelerator pedal sensor connector.

Note. Perform the MAF meter inspection according to the procedure below. Only replace the MAF meter when the MAF value in the DATA LIST (with the engine stopped) is not within the normal operating range or there is foreign matter on the MAF meter platinum hot wire (heater).

  1. INSPECT MASS AIR FLOW METER Read the value (MAF) using the Techstream. NOTE: Perform the inspection with the vehicle indoors and on a level surface. Perform the inspection of the MAF meter while it is installed to the air cleaner case (installed to the vehicle). During the test, do not use the exhaust air duct to perform suction on the exhaust pipe. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the engine switch on (IG). NOTE: Do not run the engine. Turn the Techstream ON. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / MAF. Wait 30 seconds, and read the values on the Techstream. Specified Condition Item Condition Specified Condition MAF Engine not running 30 seconds after engine switch is turned on (IG) Below 0.62 gm/sec. If the result is not as specified, replace the MAF meter. If the result is within the specified range, inspect the MAF meter See step 1 .

  1. INSPECT MASS AIR FLOW METER Perform a visual check for any foreign matter on the platinum hot wire (heater) of the mass air flow meter shown in the illustration. OK There is no foreign material. If the result is not as specified, replace the mass air flow meter. Measure the resistance between the terminals. Specified Resistance Tester Connection Condition Condition 1(THA) - 2(E2) -20°C (-4°F) 13.6 to 18.4 kohms 20°C (68°F) 2.21 to 2.69 kohms 60°C (140°F) 0.49 to 0.67 kohms If the result is not as specified, replace the mass air flow meter.
  1. INSTALL MASS AIR FLOW METER Install the MAF meter with the 2 screws. Torque: 1.0 N*m (10 kgf*cm, 9 in.*lbf) NOTE: Make sure that the O-ring is not pinched. Connect the MAF meter connector.

  1. CHECK CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR OUTPUT VOLTAGE Remove the V-bank cover sub-assembly. Refer to «REMOVAL - Step 2»(/lexus/is-f/i-2007-2014/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-service-information) . Disconnect the 2 fuel delivery pipe connectors. Disconnect the 4 connectors with wire harness locks from the 2 injector drivers. HINT: To release each connector lock, push the claw downward ("Release" in the illustration) and move the lock lever ("Move" in the illustration). Perform this step to prevent the engine from starting. Remove the engine room ECU cover See step 5 . Turn the engine switch on (IG). HINT: Do not start the engine. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.   12. REMOVE IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY Disconnect the 8 ignition coil connectors. Remove the 8 bolts and 8 ignition coils. NOTE: Do not damage the ignition coils when removing them.
  13. REMOVE SPARK PLUG Using a 16 mm plug wrench, remove the 8 spark plugs.
  1. INSTALL SPARK PLUG Using a 16 mm plug wrench, install the 8 spark plugs. Torque: 21 N*m (214 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf)
  2. INSTALL IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY Install the 8 ignition coils with the 8 bolts. NOTE: Do not damage the ignition coils when installing them. Torque: 9.0 N*m (92 kgf*cm, 80 in.*lbf) Connect the 8 ignition coil connectors.
  3. INSTALL WIRE HARNESS CLAMP BRACKET Install the wire harness clamp bracket with the bolt. Torque: 8.0 N*m (82 kgf*cm, 71 in.*lbf) Install the wire harness clamp to the clamp bracket. Install the No. 7 engine room relay block with the 2 bolts and nut. Torque: 8.0 N*m (82 kgf*cm, 71 in.*lbf)
  4. INSTALL BATTERY TRAY Install the battery tray with the 3 bolts. Torque: 5.4 N*m (55 kgf*cm, 48 in.*lbf)
  5. INSTALL POWER STEERING ECU ASSEMBLY . Refer to «INSTALLATION - Step 1»(/lexus/is-f/i-2007-2014/remont/manual-power-steering/#power-steering-inspection)
  6. INSTALL NO. 1 BATTERY TRAY SUPPORT
  7. INSTALL BATTERY Install the battery. Install the battery insulator. Install the battery clamp with a nut. Torque: 2.9 N*m (30 kgf*cm, 26 in.*lbf) Connect the cable to the positive (+) battery terminal. Torque: 5.4 N*m (55 kgf*cm, 48 in.*lbf) Connect the 2clamps.

NOTE: When checking the sensor in water, keep the terminals dry. After the check, wipe the sensor dry.
  1. INSTALL E.F.I. ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR Install a new gasket to the E.F.I. engine coolant temperature sensor. Install the E.F.I engine coolant temperature sensor. Torque: 21 N*m (214 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf) Connect the E.F.I. engine coolant temperature sensor connector.

  2. REMOVE OIL TEMPERATURE SENSOR Disconnect the temperature sensor connector. Using SST, remove the temperature sensor and gasket. SST: 09922-10010 NOTE: Do not subject the temperature sensor to any impacts. If the sensor is subjected to an impact, replace the temperature sensor with a new one.

  1. INSTALL OIL TEMPERATURE SENSOR Using SST, install the temperature sensor with a new gasket. SST: 09922-10010 without SST Torque: 39 N*m (400 kgf*cm, 29 ft.*lbf) with SST Torque: 30 N*m (301 kgf*cm, 22 ft.*lbf) NOTE: The "with SST" torque value is effective when using SST with a fulcrum length of 96 mm (3.78 in.). The "with SST" torque value is effective when using a torque wrench with a fulcrum length of 300 mm (11.81 in.). Refer to «PRECAUTION»(/lexus/is-f/i-2007-2014/remont/hoistjack/#introduction) . The "with SST" torque value is effective when SST is parallel to the torque wrench. Do not subject the temperature sensor to any impacts. If the sensor is subjected to an impact, replace the temperature sensor with a new one. Do not allow any moisture or foreign matter to enter the temperature sensor or its connector. Connect the temperature sensor connector.

  3. INSPECT AIR-FUEL RATIO COMPENSATION SYSTEM HINT: Malfunctioning areas can be identified by performing the Control the Injection Volume for A/F sensor function provided in the Active Test. The Control the Injection Volume for A/F sensor function can help to determine whether the air-fuel ratio sensor, heated oxygen sensor and other potential trouble areas are malfunctioning. The following instructions describe how to conduct the Control the Injection Volume for A/F sensor operation using the Techstream. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Start the engine and turn the Techstream ON. Warm up the engine at an engine speed of 2500 rpm for approximately 90 seconds. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Active Test / Control the Injection Volume for A/F sensor. Perform the Active Test operation with the engine in an idling condition (press the RIGHT or LEFT button to change the fuel injection volume). Monitor the output voltages of the air-fuel ratio and heated oxygen sensors (AFS B1 S1 and O2S B1 S2 or AFS B2 S1 and O2S B2 S2) displayed on the Techstream. HINT: The Control the Injection Volume for A/F sensor operation lowers the fuel injection volume by 12.5% or increases the injection volume by 25%. Each sensor reacts in accordance with increases and decreases in the fuel injection volume.
