PRECAUTION

  1. PRECAUTION FOR HEADLIGHT BULB REPLACEMENT If any defect such as deformation, cracks, dents, chipping, etc. is identified on a discharge headlight component (especially the light control ECU), replace it with a new one. Even if operation seems to be normal, the fail-safe function may be defective. Since discharge headlight and halogen bulbs (for headlights and fog lights) have pressurized gas inside and can easily be broken if scratched or dropped, special care should be taken. When handling the bulb, hold only the plastic or metal parts and do not touch the glass part with your bare hands. Never touch the high voltage socket of the discharge headlight with the headlight dimmer switch on, as this could generate 20000 V and lead to a serious accident. Never connect a tester to the high voltage socket of the discharge headlight for measurement, as this may lead to a serious accident because of high voltage. When performing operations related to the discharge headlights, keep components away from water, turn off the light control switch, and disconnect the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal and the connector of the light control ECU in advance to avoid an electric shock. When performing operations related to the discharge headlights, operate them after assembling all parts and never operate them without the bulbs installed. Only illuminate the discharge headlights using the vehicle's power source.

Various switches or sensors are represented as inputs for the different systems mentioned in the illustrations above. Where direct electrical connections do not exist between components, signals may be carried across the different networks (BEAN, CAN) that exist on the vehicle. If a signal needs to travel from the CAN network to the BEAN network, the gateway ECU allows the signal to travel between these different networks. Some of these different signals can be confirmed or inspected using the Techstream.

Scheme 158

Scheme 158: SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
  1. AUTOMATIC LIGHT CONTROL SYSTEM General When the light control switch is in the AUTO position, the automatic light control system detects ambient light levels and controls the headlights, parking lights, taillights, marker lights, and license plate lights.
  2. MANUAL LIGHT CONTROL SYSTEM The function of the system is similar to the automatic light control system, except the system is controlled according to the driver's operations.
  3. LIGHT AUTO TURN-OFF SYSTEM The light auto turn-off system is used to prevent forgetting to turn off the exterior lights (headlights, front fog lights, taillights, parking lights, license plate lights). This system has the following functions. Function Outline Driver Side Door-linked Function The exterior lights automatically turn off when all of the following conditions have been met: The engine switch is turned from on (IG) to off. The light control switch is in the TAIL position. The driver side door is opened. Delay Function The exterior lights automatically turn off 30 seconds after when all of the following conditions have been met: The engine switch is turned from on (IG) to off. The low beam headlights are on (Light control switch is in the HEAD or AUTO position). All doors are closed after any of the doors are opened. Door Control Transmitter-linked Function The exterior lights turn off immediately when the delay function is active and the following condition has been met: The lock button on the key is pushed after all doors are locked.
  4. BI-FUNCTION The models with HID (High Intensity Discharge) headlights have a Bi-function. This Bi-function increases the upper illumination area of the discharge bulb (LO/HI beam) when the HI beam is turned on. If the LO beam is selected, the upper illumination area of the discharge bulb is blocked by a shade and only the lower illumination area is used. If the HI beam is selected, the headlight solenoid slides the shutter (shade) down to allow use of the upper illumination area, thus increasing the illumination area and improving visibility when the HI beam is on. This function is activated by the front controller. The front controller receives a HI beam turn ON signal from the main body ECU RH and activates the headlight solenoid built into the headlight unit to slide the shade down.
  5. HID HEADLIGHT SYSTEM This system consists of the light control switch, windshield wiper switch assembly, main body ECU RH, HEAD LP relay, discharge bulbs, and light control ECUs. The main body ECU RH controls the low beam illumination using the HEAD LP relay. The BEAN network is used for communications. A HEAD backup link exists between the windshield wiper switch and the main body ECU RH. The light control ECUs transform the voltage that is input from the battery to a high voltage of up to 20000 V and apply this voltage to the discharge bulbs in order to illuminate them. A fail-safe function is provided as a countermeasure against high voltage generated in case a problem occurs in the headlight system. NOTE: For safety reasons, do not attempt to measure the voltage output from a light control ECU.
  6. AUTOMATIC HEADLIGHT BEAM LEVEL CONTROL SYSTEM When the headlights are on, the automatic headlight beam level control system operates the headlight level actuators in accordance with the movement of the vehicle. The automatic headlight beam level control system mainly consists of the AFS ECU, front height control sensor, rear height control sensor, and two headlight level actuators. The AFS ECU controls the system. The ECU detects the movement of the suspension from the front and rear height control sensors, and the vehicle speed from the front RH and LH speed sensors. The ECU then controls the headlight level actuator based on this information, in order to change the headlight reflector angle. The AFS ECU controls both the level control system and the intelligent AFS system. Initial Set Control the AFS ECU executes the initial setting of the stepper motors at engine-start. Fail-Safe Function If the AFS ECU detects a malfunction in the automatic headlight beam level control system, the AFS ECU effects fail-safe control. At the same time, the AFS ECU flashes the AFS OFF indicator light in order to inform the driver of the problem.
  7. INTELLIGENT AFS (ADAPTIVE FRONT-LIGHTING SYSTEM) An intelligent AFS (Adaptive Front-lighting System) is used in order to turn the LO/HI (discharge) beams in the direction the vehicle is turning. The separate (halogen) HI beam illumination is not controlled by this system. SWIVEL ANGLE RANGE Driving Condition Headlight Unit Left Right Right Turn 0° Fixed 0 to 5° to Right Left Turn 0 to 15° to Left 0° Fixed This system consists of the two headlight units for LO/HI beam (discharge illumination), the AFS ECU, two headlight swivel actuators, steering angle sensor and front speed sensors. The AFS ECU controls this system. The AFS ECU also controls the automatic headlight beam level control system. The system does not control the halogen HI beam illumination. The lights controlled by this system (LO/HI beam) are shown in the Front Lighting illustration. The AFS ECU performs intelligent AFS control when all the following conditions are fulfilled: Engine is running. Vehicle is moving* forward at 6 mph (10 km/h) or more, or stopped. Steering angle* is 7.5° or more. Headlight LO/HI beam operates. Daytime running light system is not operating. AFS ON/OFF condition is ON. *: Swivel angle change is in accordance with the vehicle speed and steering angle. The minimum vehicle speed to change the swivel is 6 mph (10 km/h) if the steering angle is wide. The minimum steering angle to change the swivel is 7.5° if the vehicle speed is high. The AFS ECU calculates the target lighting angle of the LO/HI beam based on the steering angle and the vehicle speed. Then, it actuates the headlight swivel actuators in order to attain the target lighting angle. The operation angle of the headlights is detected by the position (number of steps) of the stepper motor in the headlight swivel actuator.
  8. DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHT SYSTEM The daytime running light system is designed to automatically illuminate the headlights (dimmed HI beams), during the daytime to make the car more visible to other vehicles. The main body ECU RH and front controller control this system. The main body ECU RH transmits a turn ON signal to the front controller, and the front controller illuminates the HI beams using a duty control. This system is enabled when the conditions given below are met: Engine switch on (IG) Engine speed signal input (engine running condition) Light control switch OFF, TAIL, or AUTO position (if headlight-on control is not being performed by the automatic light control) Parking brake switch: OFF HINT: The lights that are controlled are shown in the Front Lighting and Rear Lighting illustrations.
  9. TURN SIGNALS The turn signals are front, rear and side lights that can be used to indicate a change of vehicle direction. The turn signal switch signals are received by the windshield wiper switch assembly (combination switch ECU). The main body ECU LH operates the turn signal flasher. The turn signal flasher operates the signal lights. HINT: The lights that are controlled are shown in the Front Lighting and Rear Lighting illustrations.
  10. HEADLIGHT CLEANER SYSTEM Some vehicles are provided with a headlight cleaner system. More details on the headlight cleaner system operation can be found in the wiper information. Refer to «WIPER / WASHER (SERVICE INFORMATION)»(/lexus/is-f/i-2007-2014/remont/wiperwasher-systems/#wiper-washer-service-information) .

Check that the taillights and low beam headlights come on. Uncover the automatic light control sensor. Check that the low beam headlights and taillights go off.
  3. DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHT OPERATION CHECK Turn the light control switch off. Start the engine. Release the parking brake. Check that the daytime running lights (dimmed high beam headlights) come on.
  4. AFS OPERATION CHECK Check that the initialization (determination of the initial position) of the leveling motor and swivel motor is performed after the engine is started.
  5. LIGHT CONTROL ECU OPERATION CHECK Perform the following illumination diagnosis when both of the following conditions are met: 1) the light control ECU is not visibly damaged, and 2) the light control ECU has been struck but is operating normally. If all of the following diagnosis results are normal, the light control ECU can be reused. Perform low beam headlight cold starts (10 minutes or more off, then turned on) and hot starts (15 minutes or more on, 1 minute off, then turned on again) several times. Check that the low beam headlights illuminate normally. For 5 minutes immediately after a light cold start (before the lights stabilize), visually check the illumination condition and check that the lights do not flicker or show signs of instability. Install bulbs that have approximately the same usage time, and illuminate the low beam headlights for approximately 30 seconds. Check that the brightness of the left and right bulbs are approximately the same, and that the illumination is stable.

DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM

  1. DESCRIPTION Lighting system data and the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) can be read from the Data Link Connector 3 (DLC3) of the vehicle. When the system seems to be malfunctioning, use the Techstream to check for malfunctions and to repair.
  2. CHECK DLC3 Check the DLC3. Refer to «GENERAL INFORMATION»(/lexus/is-f/i-2007-2014/remont/hoistjack/#introduction) .
  3. INSPECT BATTERY VOLTAGE Standard 11 to 14 V If the voltage is below 11 V, recharge or replace the battery before proceeding.

DTC CHECK / CLEAR

  1. CHECK DTC Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Read the DTCs by following the directions on the Techstream screen. HINT: Refer to the Techstream operator's manual for further details.
  2. CLEAR DTC Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Clear the DTCs by following the directions on the Techstream screen. HINT: Refer to the Techstream operator's manual for further details.

FAIL-SAFE CHART

  1. FAIL-SAFE Light control ECU The light control ECU executes the fail-safe actions listed below in accordance with the item that has been detected. Item Outline Detection of Abnormal Input Voltage If voltage that is input to the light control ECU deviates from the operating voltage range (9 to 16 V), the ECU stops illuminating the headlights, and resumes illuminating the headlights once the voltage reverts to the operating voltage range However, if input voltage decreases after the headlights have illuminated, the headlights will remain illuminated as long as possible Detection of Abnormal Output (open or short circuit) or Flashing Bulb If an abnormal condition (open or short circuit) occurs in voltage that is output by the light control ECU, or if the bulb flashes, the ECU stops illuminating the headlights and will maintain this state until power is reinstated (by turning the headlight control switch off and then on again) Detection of Bulb Open If a bulb is not inserted in its socket, the ECU stops generating high voltage until the bulb is inserted correctly and power is reinstated (by turning the headlight control switch off and then on again or turning the engine switch off and then on (IG) again) AFS ECU HINT: If a malfunction is detected, the headlight swivel ECU assembly (AFS ECU) performs fail-safe operation. Depending on the malfunction, the ECU flashes at 1 Hz intervals or illuminates the AFS OFF indicator in the combination meter assembly. Warning massages are also shown on the multi-information display. DATA LIST / ACTIVE TEST

  1. READ DATA LIST HINT: Using the Techstream to read the Data List allows the values or states of switches, sensors, actuators and other items to be read without removing any parts. This non-intrusive inspection can be very useful because intermittent conditions or signals may be discovered before parts or wiring is disturbed. Reading the Data List information early in troubleshooting is one way to save diagnostic time. NOTE: In the table below, the values listed under "Normal Condition" are reference values. Do not depend solely on these reference values when deciding whether a part is faulty or not. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Body Electrical / (desired system) / Data List. Read the Data List according to the display on the Techstream.
