WHEEL BEARING

Note. On vehicles equipped with air suspension, ensure ignition switch is in OFF position BEFORE raising vehicle. If ignition is on when vehicle is raised, vehicle automatic height adjustment will operate, resulting in possible damage to vehicle.

ES300

  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheels and tires. Remove caliper retaining bolts. Remove caliper from steering knuckle. Suspend caliper with wire. Place match marks on disc and hub for reassembly. Remove brake disc. Measure axle bearing axial play with dial indicator. Maximum bearing play should be .002" (.05 mm).
  2. Measure axle hub runout. Hub runout should not exceed .002" (.05 mm). If axle bearing play is excessive, replace axle bearing. If hub runout is excessive, replace hub. See «HUB & KNUCKLE ASSEMBLY»(ref-121624-S26680461292001090400000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.

GS300, GS400 & LS400

  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheels. Remove brake caliper retaining bolts and caliper. Suspend caliper with wire. Place match marks on disc and axle hub for reassembly. Remove brake disc.
  2. Measure axle bearing axial play with a dial indicator. Maximum play should not exceed .002" (.05 mm). If play is excessive, replace axle bearing.
  3. Measure axle hub runout. Hub runout should not exceed .002" (.05 mm). If hub runout is excessive, replace hub. See «HUB & KNUCKLE ASSEMBLY»(ref-121624-S26680461292001090400000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.

SC300 & SC400

  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheel. Remove caliper retaining bolts and caliper. Suspend caliper with wire. Place match marks on disc and hub for reassembly. Remove brake disc. Remove ABS speed sensor. Measure axle bearing axial play with a dial indicator. Maximum bearing play should be .002" (.05 mm).
  2. Measure axle hub runout. Hub runout should not exceed .002" (.05 mm). If bearing play is excessive, replace axle bearing. If hub runout is excessive, replace hub. See «HUB & KNUCKLE ASSEMBLY»(ref-121624-S26680461292001090400000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.

Lower Ball Joint Play (Except 1998 SC300, SC400 & ES300)

Raise and support vehicle and remove wheel assembly. Using a dial indicator with a magnetic base, place the base on the strut bar and position the spindle of the dial indicator parallel to the knuckle arm. Measure the play of the lower ball joint when the axle is pushed up. Maximum play should be 0.012" (.3 mm) for LS400 models, for 1998 GS300 & 1998 GS400 .035" (.9 mm). If not to specification, replace the ball joint.

Lower Ball Joint Rotational Check

Remove lower ball joint. On SC300 and SC400 models, lower control arm must be removed. See LOWER CONTROL ARM & BALL JOINT under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clamp ball joint in vise. Move stud back and forth 5 times through its entire range. Install nut. Using INCH-lb. torque wrench, rotate stud at rate of 2-4 seconds per turn. Measure rotating torque on fifth turn. On 1997 SC300, 1997 SC400 and ES300 models, replace ball joint if rotating torque is not 9-30 INCH lbs. (1.0-3.4 N.m). On 1997 LS400, specification should be 0-4.3 INCH lbs. (0-1.5 N.m). On 1997 GS300, specification should be 0.9-17 INCH lbs. (0.1-2.0 N.m). On 1998 SC300 and 1998 SC400 5-31 INCH lbs. (0.5-3.5 N.m). On 1998 LS400 9-21.7 INCH lbs. (1-2.5 N.m). On 1998 GS300 and 1998 GS400 .9-26 INCH lbs. (.1-3 N.m). On 1998 ES300 8.7-30 INCH lbs. (1-3.4 N.m)

Upper Ball Joint

Remove upper control arm. See UPPER CONTROL ARM & BALL JOINT under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clamp ball joint in vise. Move stud back and forth 5 times through its entire range. Install nut. Using INCH-lb. torque wrench, rotate stud at rate of 2-4 seconds per turn. Measure rotating torque on fifth turn. Replace upper control arm if rotating torque is not 9-30 INCH lbs. (1.0-3.4 N.m) on all models except 1998 SC300 and 1998 SC400. For 1998 SC300 and 1998 SC400 rotating torque is 9-31 INCH lbs. (1-3.5 N.m).

COIL SPRING

See STRUT ASSEMBLY under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.

LOWER CONTROL ARM & BALL JOINT

Note. On vehicles equipped with air suspension, ensure ignition switch is in OFF position BEFORE raising vehicle. If ignition is on when vehicle is raised, vehicle automatic height adjustment will operate, resulting in possible damage to vehicle.

STABILIZER BAR

Note. On vehicles equipped with air suspension, ensure ignition switch is in OFF position BEFORE raising vehicle. If ignition is on when vehicle is raised, vehicle automatic height adjustment will operate, resulting in possible damage to vehicle.

UPPER CONTROL ARM & BALL JOINT

Note. On LS400 models equipped with air suspension, ensure ignition switch is in OFF position BEFORE raising vehicle. If ignition is on when vehicle is raised, vehicle automatic height adjustment will operate, resulting in possible damage to vehicle.
