Except SC300 & SC400
With ignition switch in START position, current flows to Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch. PNP switch prevents the starter from operating if the transmission is in gear. Current flows through the starter relay coil to ground. This energizes the starter relay, allowing battery power to the starter solenoid. The starter solenoid engages, allowing current to flow through starter motor field coils.
SC300 & SC400
With ignition switch in START position, current flows to Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch. PNP switch prevents the starter from operating if the transmission is in gear. Current flows through the starter relay coil and is grounded at theft deterrent and door lock control ECU. This energizes the starter relay, allowing battery power to the starter solenoid. The starter solenoid engages, allowing current to flow through starter motor field coils.
ES300
- Remove starter relay from underhood junction block. Check for battery voltage at junction block relay cavity terminal No. 5. Turn ignition to START. Check for battery voltage at junction block relay cavity terminal No. 1. Turn ignition off. Check for continuity between junction block relay cavity terminal No. 2 and ground.
- Check for continuity between junction block relay cavity terminal No. 5 and starter terminal No. 1 (Black/Red wire). Remove glove box. Using DVOM, backprobe ECM 31-pin connector E7 terminal No. 11 (Gray wire). (Scheme 13) Check for voltage with ignition in START position. Repair as necessary.

Scheme 15
- Remove all necessary components to access theft deterrent ECU. See «COMPONENT LOCATIONS»(ref-96778-S21384069502001041900000) table. Disconnect electrical connectors from theft deterrent ECU. Ensure transmission is in Park.
- While holding ignition switch in START position, measure voltage between ground and Orange theft deterrent ECU 25-pin connector terminal No. 25 (Blue/Orange wire). (Scheme 16) If 10-14 volts is measured, replace theft deterrent ECU. If 10-14 volts is not measured, check for faulty starter relay, park/neutral position switch, or wiring harness.
