TRANSMITTER PROGRAMMING
Note. System is equipped with 2 transmitters having 2 unique vehicle access codes.
VEHICLE ACCESS CODE PROGRAMMING
There are 4 modes of vehicle access code programming
- Add Mode Add a transmitter without erasing existing code. 4 transmitter codes can be registered at one time. If number of registered codes exceeds 4, previously registered codes are erased in order starting with first registered code.
- Rewrite Mode Erases all previously registered transmitter codes and reprograms new transmitters.
- Confirmation Mode Informs user of number of existing transmitter codes already programmed in system.
- Erase Mode Erases all existing registered transmitter codes and cancels operation. Use this function if transmitter is lost or stolen.
- To begin reprogramming, ensure key is not inserted in ignition switch. Ensure driver's door is open and unlocked, and all other doors are closed. Insert key in ignition switch, then remove it.
- Press door lock switch to LOCK, then within one second, press door lock switch to UNLOCK position. Repeat procedure continuously until door locks have been locked and unlocked 5 times. Close and open driver's door. This procedure must be carried out within 40 seconds.
- Repeat procedure in step 2 except for closing and opening driver's door. Insert key in ignition switch. To enter desired mode, turn ignition switch to ON position and back to LOCK (one cycle), within one second, the specified number of times. See «MODE SELECTION»(ref-96856-S36299462682001041900000) table. Remove key from ignition switch. - If any mode other than confirmation mode is selected, go to next step. If confirmation mode was selected, door locks will cycle to lock position 0-4 times depending on how many transmitter codes are stored in ECU (example: 2 stored codes = 2 door lock cycles). Registration of confirmation code completed. This procedure must be carried out within 20 seconds.
- If add mode, rewrite mode or erase mode is selected, to confirm proper initiation, door locks will automatically cycle one time for add mode, 2 times for rewrite mode and 5 times for erase mode. Press new transmitter button for at least one second. Again press any new transmitter button for at least one second. This procedure must be carried out within 20 seconds.
- Door locks should cycle once to confirm transmitter signal was received by ECU. This procedure must be carried out within 3 seconds.
- If door locks cycle once, new transmitter code has been successfully accepted. If door locks cycle 2 times, new transmitter code was not successfully accepted. To program another transmitter or make a second attempt at programming in a transmitter code, repeat steps 5 through 7 .
REMOTE TRANSMITTER FUNCTIONS DO NOT OPERATE
- Ensure key is not inserted into ignition switch. All doors are closed and locked.
- Standing outside vehicle, near driver's door, point transmitter toward vehicle. Press door lock and unlock switch on transmitter for about one second. If doors do not lock and unlock properly, go to next step. If doors lock and unlock properly, system is functioning properly at this time.
- Observe remote transmitter LED while pressing transmitter lock and unlock switch. If remote transmitter LED illuminates when transmitter lock and unlock switch is pressed, go to step 5 . If remote transmitter LED does not illuminate when transmitter lock and unlock switch is pressed, go to next step.
- Replace remote transmitter battery. Check remote transmitter functions. If remote transmitter still does not operate properly, go to next step. If remote transmitter operates properly with new battery, old battery was faulty. System is now operating properly.
- Ensure key is not inserted into ignition switch. All doors are closed and locked.
- The following procedure must be carried out within 35 seconds. Insert key into ignition switch, then remove it, turn ignition on and off 10 times. Buzzer should sound a short tone followed by a longer tone, indicating successful entry to diagnostic mode. If buzzer sounds as specified, go to step 8 . If buzzer does not sound and method used to enter diagnostic mode is correct, go to next step. If buzzer does not sound and method used to enter diagnostic mode is not correct, repeat procedure.
- If chirping function of confirmation buzzer is not normal in previous step, check door lock buzzer. See «DOOR LOCK BUZZER»(ref-96856-S01825021782001041900000) under COMPONENT TESTS. If chirping function of confirmation buzzer is normal in previous step, check key unlock warning switch. See «KEY UNLOCK WARNING SWITCH»(ref-96856-S37079130822001041900000) under COMPONENT TESTS. If key unlock warning switch is okay, repair or replace circuits as necessary and retest system operation. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-96856-S17138252492001041900000) .
- Press LOCK button on remote transmitter. Buzzer should produce a short tone about every .5 second. Press UNLOCK button on transmitter. Buzzer should produce 2 short tones about every .5 second. Press trunk switch. Buzzer should produce a long tone about every .5 second. If buzzer does not operate for each button pressed, transmitter may be faulty. Try other transmitter. If buzzer operates as specified, go to step 10 . If buzzer sounds a long continuous tone, go to next step.
- A long continuous tone indicates transmitter is operating, but transmitter code is not recognized by ECU. Perform «VEHICLE ACCESS CODE PROGRAMMING»(ref-96856-S02557942981999071600000) and recheck remote door lock operation. If remote door locks still do not operate properly, attempt diagnosis by symptom. See TROUBLE SHOOTING in BODY CONTROL SYSTEMS article.
- Standing at least 3 feet away from vehicle, press and hold transmitter switch. After holding button for 20 seconds, buzzer should stop. If operation is not as specified, check wireless door lock control ECU pin voltages. See «PIN VOLTAGE TESTS»(ref-96856-S24043130912001041900000) . If operation is as specified, other problems exist in body control system. See BODY CONTROL SYSTEMS article.
- Repeat procedure in step 10 using other transmitter and check effective range. If buzzer operates as specified, replace original transmitter. If buzzer does not operate properly using both transmitters, go to next step.
- Using scan tool, check for DTC 42. If DTC 42 is not retrieved, go to next step. If DTC 42 is retrieved, check for faults in Pink wire between wireless door lock control ECU and body control ECU No. 1. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-96856-S17138252492001041900000) . Repair or replace as necessary.
- Check circuits for opens between wireless door lock control ECU and body control ECU No. 1. If circuits are okay, go to next step. Repair or replace circuits as necessary.
- Check wireless door lock control ECU pin voltages. See «PIN VOLTAGE TESTS»(ref-96856-S24043130912001041900000) . Replace wireless door lock control ECU as necessary. Retest system operation. If system still does not operate properly, see TROUBLE SHOOTING SYMPTOMS table in BODY CONTROL SYSTEM article.
DOOR LOCK BUZZER
Disconnect door lock buzzer (located behind left kick panel). Using an ohmmeter, check resistance between buzzer terminals. Resistance should be about 1 k/ohms. Replace buzzer if necessary. If resistance is as specified, check buzzer circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Repair or replace as necessary. Retest system operation.
KEY UNLOCK WARNING SWITCH
Disconnect key unlock warning switch 4-pin connector (located in steering column, near ignition switch). With key in ignition, check continuity between terminal No. 1 and No. 2. (Scheme 11) Continuity should exist. With key removed from ignition, check continuity between terminal No. 1 and No. 2. Continuity should not exist. If continuity does not exist, replace switch.

PIN VOLTAGE TESTS
Note. Perform this procedure only if you already performed the test (see TROUBLE SHOOTING or SYMPTOM TESTS ) and the system still does not operate properly.
With Connector Disconnected
Check voltage or continuity between following wireless door lock control ECU connector terminals. (Scheme 12) If values are not as specified, repair wire harness or replace components as necessary. If values are as specified, wireless door lock control ECU may be faulty.
Terminal No. 1 & Ground
During all conditions, continuity should exist.
Terminal No. 7 & Ground
During all conditions, voltage should be 10-14 volts.
With Connector Connected
Check voltage by backprobing between following wireless door lock control ECU terminals (component side). (Scheme 12) If voltages are not as specified, repair wire harness or replace components as necessary. If voltages are as specified, wireless door lock control ECU may be faulty.
Terminal No. 3 & Ground
With ignition off, key removed from ignition and remote transmitter operated, voltage should be 4.5-5.5 volts and drop to less than one volt.
Terminal No. 4 & Ground
With ignition off, key removed from ignition and remote transmitted not operated, voltage should be 10-14 volts.
