DESCRIPTION

Note. If the wiring connector of the AIRBAG system is disconnected with the ignition switch at ON or ACC, diagnostic codes will be recorded.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Note. If the wiring connector of the AIRBAG system is disconnected with the ignition switch at ON or ACC, diagnostic codes will be recorded.

1. Disconnect the battery negative (-) terminal. Place the front wheels facing straight ahead. Using a Torx wrench, loosen the four screws. Loosen the Torx screws until the groove along the screw circumference catches on the screw case. (Scheme 3) Pull the wheel pad out from the steering wheel and disconnect the AIRBAG connector. (Scheme 4)
2. Disconnect the connector. Remove the set nut. Using Special tool 09213-31021, remove the steering wheel. (Scheme 5)and «SPECIAL TOOLS»(/lexus/es/v20-1989-1991/remont/steering-column/#steering-columns).

1. Check that the front wheels are facing straight ahead. Center the spiral cable. Install the steering wheel and torque the set nut. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/lexus/es/v20-1989-1991/remont/steering-column/#steering-columns__torque-specifications). Connect the connector. (Scheme 6)
2. Install the wheel pad after confirming that the circumference groove of the Torx screws is caught on the screw case. Using a Torx wrench, tighten the four screws. (Scheme 3)and «SPECIAL TOOLS»(/lexus/es/v20-1989-1991/remont/steering-column/#steering-columns).
3. Check steering wheel center point after installing steering column.

Manufacturer does not give specific removal and installation procedures. Use (Scheme 1) and (Scheme 2) as a guide.

1. Using a centering punch, mark the center of the tapered head bolts. Using a 3-4 mm drill, drill into the tapered head bolt. (Scheme 7) Using a screw extractor, remove the tapered head bolt. (Scheme 8) Remove the two bolts and separate the upper bracket and column tube.
2. Remove the two thrust stopper set bolts. (Scheme 9) Using snap ring pliers, remove the snap ring (Scheme 10) Remove the main shaft. Using snap ring pliers, remove the snap ring from the main shaft. (Scheme 11)
3. Using a screwdriver, remove the snap ring and trust stopper (Scheme 12) Remove the O-ring from the thrust stopper.

1. Inspect upper bracket. Check that the steering lock mechanism operates properly. (Scheme 13)
2. If necessary, replace ignition key cylinder. Place the ignition key at the ACC position. Push down the stop key with a thin rod, and pull out the key cylinder. (Scheme 14) Turn the ignition key plate to the ACC position, and install new key cylinder into the upper bracket.
3. Inspect upper bearing. Check the upper bearing rotation condition and check for abnormal noise. (Scheme 15) If the bearing is worn or damaged, replace the column tube assembly.
4. Inspect lower bearing. Check the lower bearing rotation condition and check for abnormal noise. (Scheme 16) If bearing is worn or damaged, replace the thrust stopper.
5. Inspect key interlock solenoid, if necessary. Solenoid resistance should be 12.5-16.5 ohms.
6. If necessary, replace key interlock solenoid. Using a screwdriver, remove E-ring and the cover. (Scheme 17) Remove two screws and the solenoid. Install the solenoid with two screws. Install the cover and E-ring over the two springs.

1. Install a new O-ring to the thrust stopper. Install the thrust stopper and snap ring. (Scheme 12)
2. Using snap ring pliers, install the snap ring in the lower groove of the main shaft. (Scheme 11)
3. Apply molybdenum disulphide lithium base grease to the thrust stopper. Insert the main shaft into the column tube. Using Snap ring pliers, install the snap ring. (Scheme 10) Install the two thrust stopper set bolts. (Scheme 18)
4. Install upper bracket to column tube. Install the upper bracket with two new tapered head bolts. Tighten the tapered head bolts until the bolt heads break off. (Scheme 19)
