DESCRIPTION
Nippondenso starters are 4-brush, solenoid-actuated, gear reduction-type, equipped with an overrunning clutch. The brush holder assembly retains brushes and springs in the starter housing.
CLUTCH START SWITCH
Locate clutch start switch behind clutch pedal. Ensure continuity exists between switch terminals with switch pushed in. No continuity should exist with switch released. If continuity is not as specified, replace switch.
NEUTRAL/START SWITCH
Use an ohmmeter to check continuity between neutral/start switch terminals. (Scheme 1) If continuity is not as specified, replace switch.
Scheme 1
Note. Starter relays are part of the theft deterrent system. When the theft deterrent system is activated, a contact inside the theft deterrent ECU is opened. This creates an open circuit on the ground side of the starter relay, thus making the starter inoperative. Use steps 3) and 4) of starter relay testing procedure to check theft deterrent system starter cut-out (if necessary). Unlock driver's door with key to cancel starter cut-out BEFORE checking starter relay circuit.
- Locate and remove starter relay from left, rear corner of engine compartment. Ensure continuity exists between terminals No. 1 and No. 3. (Scheme 2) No continuity should exist between terminals No. 2 and No. 4. If continuity is not as specified, replace relay.
- Apply battery voltage across terminals No. 1 and No. 3. Continuity should now exist between terminals No. 2 and No. 4. If continuity is not as specified, replace relay.
- Locate theft deterrent ECU behind glove box and disconnect connectors. (Scheme 4) Turn ignition switch to ST (start) position. With shift lever in Neutral or clutch pedal depressed, check voltage between terminal No. 18 of theft deterrent ECU wiring harness connector and body ground.
- If voltage does not exist, check and repair harness/connections between starter relay and theft deterrent ECU. If voltage exists and starter relay circuit is still inoperative, test and replace theft deterrent ECU.

NO-LOAD TEST
Using jumper wires, connect starter terminal "C", terminal No. 30 and terminal No. 50 to battery. (Scheme 4) Under no-load test, starter armature should rotate steadily.
| Application | Amps @ RPM | Volts |
|---|---|---|
| 1.0 Kilowatt Rating | 90 @ 3000 | 11.5 |
| 1.4 Kilowatt Rating | 90 @ 3500 | 11.5 |
NO-LOAD TEST SPECIFICATIONS
SOLENOID TEST
- Disconnect starter field coil lead from terminal "C". Connect battery to starter solenoid. (Scheme 4) Clutch pinion gear should move outward. If clutch pinion gear DOES NOT move outward, replace starter solenoid.
- Disconnect jumper lead from terminal "C". Clutch pinion gear should remain in outward position. If clutch pinion gear DOES NOT remain in outward position, replace starter solenoid.
- Disconnect jumper lead from starter solenoid. Clutch pinion gear should move inward. If clutch pinion gear DOES NOT move inward, replace starter solenoid.
ARMATURE TEST
Ensure continuity exists between all commutator segments. Ensure continuity DOES NOT exist between commutator and armature core. If continuity is not as specified, replace armature.
FIELD WINDINGS TEST
Ensure continuity exists between starter solenoid lead and brush lead. Ensure continuity DOES NOT exists between brush lead and stator housing. If continuity is not as specified, replace field windings.

TROUBLESHOOTING
Note. See TROUBLE SHOOTING - BASIC PROCEDURES article in the GENERAL INFORMATION section.
Removal & Installation
Disconnect battery cables. Remove battery and battery tray. Disconnect ignitor connector, noise filter connector, ignition coil high-tension lead and ground strap. Detach wiring harness clamp and remove ignitor bracket. Disconnect wiring and remove starter. To install, reverse removal procedure. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table.
OVERHAUL
Note. Overhaul procedures are not available from manufacturer. (Scheme 5)and STARTER OVERHAUL SPECIFICATIONS table.
