SPECIAL CARE DURING MECHANICAL REPAIRS
| WARNING | To avoid injury from accidental air bag deployment, read and carefully follow all SERVICE PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM procedures. |
| WARNING | Some vehicles are equipped with a passenger's side air bag ON/OFF switch. This switch should NOT be used in place of specified vehicle air bag system disabling and activating procedures. |
| WARNING | DO NOT use any type of back-up power supply (memory saver) from outside vehicle to avoid memory loss in memory systems, if equipped. Back-up power supplies can provide enough voltage to deploy air bags. |
Note. This article applies to 2003 vehicles, except where noted.
Note. When the battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory system may lose data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle.
In some instances, it may be necessary to remove steering column or instrument panel to gain access to blower motor housing, heater assembly, evaporator assembly, or other A/C-heater system related components. Observe manufacturer service precautions when working on a vehicle equipped with an air bag system. See appropriate manufacturer's SERVICE PRECAUTIONS.
Electrical sources should never be allowed near inflator on back of air bag module. Never probe air bag system electrical wires with analog volt-ohmmeter or test light. Always disable air bag system before servicing vehicle. See appropriate DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM procedure. Failure to do so could result in accidental air bag deployment and possible personal injury.
If air bag system is not fully functional for any reason, DO NOT drive vehicle until system is repaired and is again operational. DO NOT remove bulbs, modules, sensors or other components, or in any way disable system from operating normally. If air bag system is not functional, park vehicle until system is repaired and functions properly.
SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK
When ignition is turned on, SRS indicator light should come on for about 6 seconds and then go off. If indicator does not come on, or does not go off after about 6 seconds or comes on while driving, air bag system must be inspected and repaired as soon as possible.
SERVICE PRECAUTIONS
Observe these precautions when working with air bag systems and seat belt pretensioners, if equipped
- Disable SRS before servicing any SRS, instrument panel or steering column component. Failure to do this could result in accidental air bag deployment, causing personal injury and/or vehicle damage. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(/land-rover/range-rover/l322-2002-2005/remont/restraints/#air-bag-deactivation-procedures__disabling-activating-air-bag-system) .
- WAIT at least 3 minutes after disabling air bag system. A back-up power circuit capacitor (in SRS control unit) maintains system voltage for about 3 minutes after battery is disconnected. Servicing air bag system or seat belt pretensioners before 3 minutes may cause accidental air bag deployment and possible personal injury.
- Radio has a coded theft protection circuit. Before disconnecting battery cables get radio activation code from vehicle owner.
- Avoid direct exposure of SRS unit or wiring harnesses to heat guns, welding or spraying equipment when painting or doing body work.
- DO NOT attempt to modify, splice or repair SRS wiring harnesses. Ensure SRS wiring harnesses are installed so that they are not pinched or interfering with other components.
- After an accident, all SRS components, including wiring harnesses and brackets, must be inspected. If any components are damaged or bent, they must be replaced, even if air bag did not deploy. Check steering column, knee bolster, instrument panel steering column reinforcement plate and lower brace for damage. DO NOT repair any component or wiring. If components or wiring are damaged or defective, replacement is required.
- Whenever air bags have been activated, replace seat belt pretensioners (if equipped) and SRS unit.
- Carefully inspect all SRS components before installation. DO NOT install any component that shows signs of being dropped or improperly handled, such as dents, cracks or other deformities.
- DO NOT install SRS components previously installed on another vehicle. When replacing SRS components, use only NEW, manufacturer supplied components.
- DO NOT expose air bags or seat belt pretensioner assemblies to temperatures exceeding 212°F (100°C).
- DO NOT spill water or oil on air bags or side impact sensors.
- Always wear safety glasses when servicing SRS or handling an air bag or seat belt pretensioner, if equipped.
- DO NOT position yourself in front of air bag during removal, inspection or replacement.
- DO NOT attempt to disassemble air bag assembly, cable reel, or seat belt pretensioner, if equipped. Neither component has any serviceable or reusable parts.
- A replacement air bag assembly must be stored in its original special container until used for service. Special container must be stored in a clean, dry place, away from sources of extreme heat, sparks and high electrical energy.
- When placing a live air bag assembly on a bench or other surface, always face air bag and trim cover up, away from surface. This will reduce motion of air bag assembly if accidentally deployed.
- During installation or replacement of SRS control unit, DO NOT bump, drop or strike unit or immediate area. SRS unit could be damaged and/or air bag deployment could occur.
- After deployment, air bag assembly is very hot. WAIT 30 minutes before handling. After deployment, air bag surface may contain deposits of sodium azide and potassium nitrate, which can irritate skin. Always wear safety glasses, rubber gloves and long-sleeved shirt during clean-up, and wash hands using mild soap and water. Follow correct disposal procedures.
- After air bag deployment, inspect all SRS wiring harnesses for heat or other damage. Replace, DO NOT repair, any damaged harnesses. Ensure all SRS ground connections are clean and tight. Ensure SRS wiring harnesses are installed so that they are not pinched or interfere with other components.
- DO NOT allow any electrical source near inflator on back of air bag assembly or near 3-pin connector of seat belt pretensioner.
- During SRS component installation or replacement, be careful to not bump area around SRS unit, front impact sensors or side impact sensor using an impact wrench, hammer, etc. Air bags could accidentally deploy causing damage or injury.
- When carrying a live air bag assembly, trim cover pad should be pointed away from body to minimize injury in case of accidental air bag deployment.
- If SRS is not fully functional for any reason, vehicle should not be driven until system is repaired. DO NOT remove any component or in any way disable system from operating normally. If SRS is not functional, park vehicle until repairs can be made.

Air bag system operation is normal if the SRS indicator light in instrument cluster flashes approximately 6 times and then goes out after ignition switch is turned to ON position.
Observe these precautions when working with air bag systems
- Be sure to proceed with air bag related service after waiting at least 30 seconds or more from the time ignition switch is turned to LOCK position and negative battery cable is disconnected. Air bag system is equipped with a back-up power source to assure air bag deployment if battery power is interrupted during an accident. The back-up power is available for approximately 150 milliseconds.
- When troubleshooting air bag system, always check for, and record Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) before disconnecting the battery.
- Symptoms of air bag system malfunctions are difficult to detect, DTCs become the most important source of information when troubleshooting air bag system malfunctions.
- When negative battery cable is disconnected, clock and audio system memory will be erased. Before starting work, record contents of audio system memory. When work is finished, reset audio system and adjust clock time display.
- Never use air bag components from another vehicle. When replacing components, replace them with new manufacturer components.
- Never attempt to disassemble and repair air bag modules, clockspring and wiring harnesses in order to reuse them.
- When ignition switch is in ON position, never cause a sudden shock to area around satellite sensor by a hammer, air tools, etc. Doing so could cause air bag system to unexpectedly deploy during servicing.
- If any air bag system component has been dropped, or if there are cracks, dents or other defects in the case, bracket or connector, replace component with a new component.
- The inflator will be quite hot immediately following deployment, wait at least 30 minutes to allow it to cool before attempting to handle it. Although not poisonous, DO NOT inhale gas from air bag deployment.
- The air bag indicator lamp can be triggered by faults in other circuit in some cases. Therefore if the air bag indicator lamp goes on, be sure to erase the DTC codes using scan tool just after repairing or replacing the troubled parts, including the fuse.
- After firing the air bags one time, the Supplement Restraint System Control Module (SRSCM) must be replaced.
- Always disconnect negative battery cable when performing body welding.
- When work on air bag system is completed, perform air bag system check. See «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(/land-rover/range-rover/l322-2002-2005/remont/restraints/#air-bag-deactivation-procedures) .
Note. When the negative battery cable is disconnected, clock and audio system memories will be erased. Before starting work, record contents of audio system memory.
- Record preset radio station frequencies. Turn ignition off. Disconnect and shield negative battery cable. Be sure to proceed with air bag related service after waiting at least 30 seconds or more from the time the ignition switch is turned to the LOCK position and battery is disconnected. Air bag system back-up power source is available for approximately 150 milliseconds.
- Ensure ignition is turned off. Reconnect negative battery cable. Check SRS indicator light to ensure system is functioning properly. See «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(/land-rover/range-rover/l322-2002-2005/remont/restraints/#air-bag-deactivation-procedures) . When the work is finished, reset the audio system and adjust the clock.
- Turn ignition ON and verify that AIR BAG indicator light comes on for about 7 seconds, then goes off. With seat belt fastened and ignition ON, the SEAT BELT indicator light should come on and seat belt warning chime should sound for about 7 seconds, then go off. If seat belt is not fastened, the seat belt warning chime should sound and SEAT BELT indicator light will stay on for longer than 7 seconds.
- If the AIR BAG indicator light does not come on, or after about 7 seconds does not go out or begins to flash, a SRS malfunction has been detected.
- On G20 and Q45 models, if the SEAT BELT indicator light does not come on, or stays on longer than 7 seconds with seat belt fastened, a seat belt pretensioner malfunction has been detected.
Observe these precautions when working with air bag systems
- Disable SRS system before servicing any SRS component, instrument panel components, steering column components or seat belt pretensioners, if equipped. Failure to do this could result in accidental activation of SRS and causing personal injury and/or vehicle damage. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(/land-rover/range-rover/l322-2002-2005/remont/restraints/#air-bag-deactivation-procedures) .
- WAIT at least 3 minutes after disabling SRS before servicing vehicle. System maintains SRS system voltage for about 3 minutes. Servicing air bag system or seat belt pretensioners (if equipped) before 3 minutes could result in accidental SRS activation, causing personal injury and/or vehicle damage.
- After repairs, ensure AIR BAG indicator light is operating properly and no system faults are indicated. See «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(/land-rover/range-rover/l322-2002-2005/remont/restraints/#air-bag-deactivation-procedures) .
- Always wear safety glasses when servicing or handling any air bag system components.
- Air bag modules and seat belt pretensioners (if equipped) must be stored in their original special containers until installation. They must be stored in a clean, dry place, away from sources of extreme heat, sparks or high electrical energy.
- Always place SRS components on a clean flat surface. When placing a live air bag module on a bench, always face air bag and trim cover up, away from surface. This will reduce motion of module if accidentally activated.
- Replace air bag module if dropped or if it sustained an impact.
- DO NOT expose air bag to temperatures greater than 194°F (90°C).
- DO NOT expose seat belt pretensioners to temperatures greater than 176°F (80°C).
- DO NOT allow water, oil, or grease to come in contact with air bag module.
- If steering gear is removed, DO NOT turn steering wheel or column shaft. Rotation of SRS spiral cable under steering wheel air bag module is limited. SRS spiral cable must be aligned in neutral position (centered).
- After deployment, air bag surface may contain deposits of sodium hydroxide, which can irritate skin. Always wear safety glasses, rubber gloves and long-sleeved shirt during clean-up, and wash hands using mild soap and water. Follow correct disposal procedures.
- At no time should any electrical source be allowed near inflator on back of air bag module.
- DO NOT use old bolts after removal; replace with new ones.
- DO NOT insert any foreign objects (screwdriver, etc.) into air bag module connector.
- When carrying a live air bag module, trim cover should be pointed away from body to minimize injury in case of accidental air bag deployment.
- DO NOT probe a wire through insulator; this will damage wire and eventually cause failure due to corrosion.
- If SRS system is not fully functional for any reason, vehicle should not be driven until system is repaired. DO NOT remove bulbs, modules, sensors or other components or in any way disable system from operating normally. If SRS system is not functional, park vehicle until repairs can be made.
| CAUTION | On vehicles equipped with automatic window adjusting function, when a door is opened, the window automatically lowers slightly to avoid contact between the window and the side roof panel. After the door is closed, the window will automatically raise slightly. On vehicles equipped with the automatic window adjusting function, lower both the driver's and front passenger's side windows before disconnecting the battery cables. This will prevent interference between the side window and the roof panel when either door is opened or closed. After the battery cables are disconnected, DO NOT open or close driver's and/or front passenger's door with the window in the full up position. The automatic window adjusting function will not work and the side roof panel may be damaged. |

- Never disassemble or repair system components. Replace cracked, dented or otherwise damaged system components.
- Electronic components in seats are sensitive to impact. Handle seat with care or damage may result.
- Electronic modules are sensitive to static electrical charges. If exposed to these charges, damage may result.
- Air bag system component repair is made by replacement only. If a component is replaced and does not correct condition, install original component and repeat diagnostic procedure.
- The gas generant used in air bags is Sodium Azide. This material is hermetically sealed in the module and is completely consumed during deployment. No attempt should be made to open an air bag inflator as this will lead to the risk of exposure to Sodium Azide. If a gas generator is ruptured, full protective clothing should be worn when dealing with the spillage.
- When placing a live air bag on a bench or other flat surface, always face air bag trim cover up, away from surface. This will reduce motion of module if it is accidentally deployed.
- When carrying a live air bag module, trim cover must be pointed away from body to minimize injury in case of accidental air bag deployment.
- After deployment, air bag surface may contain deposits of sodium hydroxide, which irritates skin. Always wear safety glasses, rubber gloves and long-sleeved shirt during clean-up. After clean-up, wash hands using mild soap and water.
- In the event of a fault that causes F4 10-amp battery supply fuse (located in the fuse-box at the driver's end of the fascia), the fuse must not be renewed until the Air Bag/SRS system has been deactivated. Fuses of any other value must never be used, as this can cause disarm failure.
- Radio code saving devices MUST NOT be used when conducting work on air bag system. It must be noted that, when using these devices, the vehicle electrical system is still live and capable of activating air bag system.
| CAUTION | When activating air bag system ensure that no one is inside vehicle when battery is reconnected. |
Note. It is necessary to record any settings or fault codes before battery is disconnected. Obtain and record the radio anti-theft keycode and preset radio frequencies, Powertrain Control Module (PCM) fault codes, and climate control assembly settings and fault codes.

DO NOT remove bulbs, modules, sensors or other components or in any way disable system from operating normally. If SRS is not functional, park vehicle until it is repaired and functions properly.
| CAUTION | On Range Rover, equipped with navigation system, disconnecting vehicle battery before the navigation computer has shut down can cause permanent damage to the computer. After the ignition is switched off, the navigation computer remains ON for approximately 55 seconds. It then performs a memory back-up operation for approximately 5 seconds before shutting down into SLEEP mode. If the vehicle battery is disconnected during this critical 5-second backup period, it can cause a memory error in the navigation computer. This can render the computer unusable, so that when power is reapplied, the satellite navigation system will not power up, giving a blank screen. Should this be the case, the navigation computer will require replacement. It is imperative that key be removed from ignition switch at least 2 minutes before disconnecting battery. On all models, before disconnecting battery, disable alarm system and switch off all electrical equipment. Ensure radio security code has been recorded. |
On Range Rover, remove key from ignition switch and WAIT at least 2 minutes and then disconnect negative battery cable, followed by the positive battery cable. On Discovery and Freelander, remove key from ignition switch and disconnect negative battery cable, followed by the positive battery cable. On all models, WAIT at least 10 minutes before working on vehicle.
Note. On Range Rover, after reconnecting battery, turn the steering wheel to full left and right lock (with engine running). This allows DSC system to relearn steering wheel position. Failure to do so will result in a variety of instrument warning lights being illuminated.
Ensure key is removed from ignition switch. Connect positive battery cable and then negative battery cable. Staying well away from air bag modules, turn ignition switch to ON position. Ensure AIR BAG indicator light operates properly. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
Turn ignition switch to ACC or ON position. Air bag indicator light in instrument cluster should come on for about 6 seconds, then go out. If indicator light remains on or flashes, a SRS malfunction has been detected.
Observe the following precautions when servicing SRS
- Disable SRS before servicing any SRS, instrument panel or steering column component. Failure to do this could result in accidental air bag deployment and possible personal injury. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(/land-rover/range-rover/l322-2002-2005/remont/restraints/#air-bag-deactivation-procedures) .
- DO NOT use any type of back-up power supply from outside vehicle to avoid memory loss in memory systems. Back-up power supplies can provide enough voltage to activate SRS components.
- After turning ignition switch to LOCK position and disconnecting negative battery cable, wait at least 90 SECONDS before working on vehicle. SRS is equipped with a back-up power source that may allow air bag to deploy within 90 seconds after disconnecting negative battery cable.
- In a minor collision in which air bags did not deploy, inspect front air bag sensors, steering wheel pad, front passenger's air bag assembly, side air bag assembly, curtain air bag assembly, seat belt pretensioner, air bag control module, and side air bag sensor.
- If steering wheel pad, front or side air bag assemblies, curtain air bag assembly, air bag sensor, side air bag sensor or front air bag sensor has been dropped, or if there are cracks, dents or other defects in the case, connectors or brackets, replace the component.
- Remove air bag sensors if an impact is likely to be applied to area close to sensors during repair.
- Never disassemble or repair system components. Replace cracked, dented or otherwise damaged system components.
- DO NOT expose front air bag sensors, center air bag sensor assembly, steering wheel pad, passenger's air bag, side air bags or seat belt pretensioners directly to hot air or flame.
- DO NOT store air bag modules where they will be exposed to temperatures greater than 199°F (93°C), high humidity or electrical noise. DO NOT store seat belt pretensioners to temperatures greater than 176°F (80°C), high humidity or electrical noise.
- Information labels are attached to air bag components. Follow all notices on labels.
- After servicing SRS, check air bag indicator light to ensure system is functioning properly. See «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(/land-rover/range-rover/l322-2002-2005/remont/restraints/#air-bag-deactivation-procedures) .
- Always wear safety glasses when servicing or handling air bags or seat belt pretensioners.
- When placing a live air bag module on a bench or other flat surface, always face air bag module and trim cover up, away from surface. This will reduce motion of module if it is accidentally deployed.
- After deployment, air bag surface may contain deposits of sodium hydroxide, which irritates skin. Always wear safety glasses, rubber gloves and long-sleeved shirt during clean-up. After clean-up, wash hands using mild soap and water.
- After deployment, steering wheel pad is very hot. WAIT 30 minutes before touching.
- DO NOT install components previously installed on another vehicle. Only use NEW components supplied by manufacturer.
- When using electric welding, disconnect air bag module and seat belt pretensioner connectors.
- When carrying a live air bag module, trim cover must be pointed away from body to minimize injury in case of accidental air bag deployment.
- If SRS is not fully functional for any reason, vehicle should not be driven until system is repaired and again becomes operational. DO NOT remove bulbs, modules, sensors or other components or in any way disable system from operating normally. If SRS is not functional, park vehicle until it is repaired and functions properly. See «SYSTEM OPERATING CHECK»(/land-rover/range-rover/l322-2002-2005/remont/restraints/#air-bag-deactivation-procedures) .
Note. All SRS harness connectors are colored Yellow to distinguish them from other connectors.
Note. If the ignition switch is turned ON with the air bag sensor assembly connectors disconnected, or if a vehicle battery is removed with the ignition switch ON, the system will determine this condition as a failure and it will automatically call the call center. When an accidental call is made automatically, access the call center and ask them to cut off the line. To prevent accidental calls, perform the following when working on procedures related to the air bag sensor assembly or battery. Disconnect Mayday ECU and back-up battery connectors before disconnecting the air bag sensor assembly connector. Ensure that the ignition switch is in the OFF position when removing a vehicle battery. If no signal has been received from the air bag sensor assembly since the ignition switch was turned ON, a service call will be made. If good signal reception from the air bag sensor assembly after the ignition switch ON is interrupted, an emergency call will be made.
- Obtain radio anti-theft protection code from vehicle owner and record preset radio frequencies before disconnecting battery.
- Place front wheels in straight-ahead position. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect and shield negative battery cable. WAIT at least 90 SECONDS before working on vehicle.
- Ensure ignition key is removed from switch. Connect negative battery cable.
- Staying well away from air bag modules, turn ignition switch to ACC or ON position. Ensure AIR BAG indicator light operates properly. See «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(/land-rover/range-rover/l322-2002-2005/remont/restraints/#air-bag-deactivation-procedures) . If equipped with a sliding roof, go to next step.
- When battery is disconnected sliding roof motor AUTO operation must be reset. To reset sliding roof motor, press the sliding roof switch on TILT UP side and hold it. When roof glass stops at the fully tilted-up position for one second, reset of the motor is completed. If the battery terminal is disconnected or after the jam protection function has operated, the ECU of the sliding roof motor may not detect the position of the roof glass.
- On ES300, always reset the sliding roof motor whenever the battery is disconnected. If not reset, the AUTO operation and jam protection function will not operate. Set sliding roof glass in to the fully tilt-up position. Push and hold the sliding roof switch UP until the sliding roof tilts down a little. Check that the sliding roof tilts up/down and slides open/close in AUTO operation. If the sliding roof is not in the correct position, press and hold the sliding roof switch UP and CLOSE until 10 seconds have passed after the roof stops moving or starts the reverse operation. The reset operation will be completed. If the jam protection function does not work, reset the sliding roof drive gear (motor) again.
- On GX470, if the AUTO operation function does not operate after reconnecting battery, reset the sliding roof motor as follows. Press sliding roof switch on TILT UP side and hold it. When the roof glass stops at the fully tilted-up position for one second, the reset of the motor is completed. If the battery terminal is disconnected or after the jam protection function has operated, the sliding roof motor ECU may not detect the position of the roof glass. If the AUTO operation function is still disabled even after the sliding roof motor is reset, the hall IC (built in the sliding roof motor assembly) for detecting the roof glass position may be malfunctioning.
- On IS300, sliding roof motor ECU must be reinitialized after reconnecting battery. Reinitialize sliding roof by moving the sliding roof to the maximum tilted position. Release the switch, press the switch again and hold it for 10 seconds. The sliding roof operates in a cycle of TILT DOWN, SLIDE OPEN, SLIDE CLOSE and TILT UP. This completes reinitializing.

Turn ignition off and remove ignition key. Disconnect any outside source of electrical circuit (i.e. battery charger). Disconnect negative battery cable and shield cable end. Disconnect SRS control module connector.
Turn ignition off and remove ignition key. Reconnect SRS control module connector. Reconnect negative battery cable end. Ensure SRS MIL will illuminates properly. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
Turn ignition switch to ON or START position. SRS warning light should illuminate for about 7 seconds and then turn off and remain off for at least 5 seconds indicating that SRS system is operating properly. If SRS warning light does not illuminate as described, stays on for more than 7 seconds or illuminates while driving, SRS is malfunctioning and needs repair.
Observe the following precautions when working with SRS
- Disable SRS before servicing any SRS or steering column component. Failure to do this may result in accidental air bag deployment and possible personal injury.
- WAIT at least ONE MINUTE after disabling air bag system before servicing vehicle. Air bag system maintains enough voltage to deploy air bags for ONE MINUTE after disconnecting battery.
- After servicing, check SRS warning light to verify system operation. See «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(/land-rover/range-rover/l322-2002-2005/remont/restraints/#air-bag-deactivation-procedures) .
- Always wear safety glasses when servicing or handling an air bag.
- Battery posts, terminals and related accessories contain lead and lead compounds. WASH HANDS after handling to reduce lead exposure.
- DO NOT expose SRS-ECU, air bag module and clockspring to temperatures greater than 200°F (93°C).
- DO NOT expose seat belt with pretensioner to temperatures greater than 194°F (90°C).
- SRS components and seat belt pretensioner should not be subjected to heat. Remove SRS-ECU, driver's and front passenger's air bag modules, clockspring, side-air bag modules, and seat belt pretensioners before drying or baking vehicle after painting.
- When placing a live air bag module on a bench or other surface, always face air bag module and trim cover up, away from surface. This will reduce motion of module if air bag accidentally deploys.
- To prevent damage to driver's air bag clockspring, center front wheels before removing steering wheel or steering gear. Center front wheels and align clockspring neutral marks before installing steering wheel.
- After air bag deploys, air bag surface may contain deposits of sodium hydroxide, which irritates skin. Always wear safety glasses, rubber gloves and long-sleeved shirt during clean-up. Wash hands using mild soap and water. Follow correct clean-up and disposal procedures.
- Because of critical system operating requirements, DO NOT service or repair any SRS components, including wiring harness. Repairs are only made by replacing defective component(s).
- DO NOT allow any electrical source near inflator on the back of air bag module. DO NOT use an ohmmeter or powered circuit tester on air bag modules.
- When carrying a live (undeployed) air bag module, trim cover must be pointed away from body to minimize injury in case of accidental air bag deployment.
- Make certain ignition switch is in the LOCK (OFF) position when scan tool is connected or disconnected.
- DO NOT probe a wire through insulator, as this will damage wire and eventually cause failure due to corrosion.
- If SRS is not fully functional for any reason, DO NOT drive vehicle until system is repaired and is fully functional. DO NOT remove bulbs, modules, sensors or other components, or in any way disable system from operating normally. If SRS is not functional, park vehicle until repairs are made.
To disable system, turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect and isolate negative battery cable. WAIT at least ONE MINUTE before servicing vehicle. To activate system, ensure ignition switch is in LOCK position and reconnect negative battery cable. Staying well away from air bag modules, turn ignition switch to ON position. Ensure AIR BAG indicator light operates properly. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
- Turn ignition ON and verify that AIR BAG indicator light comes on for about 7 seconds, then goes off.
- If the AIR BAG indicator light does not come on, or after about 7 seconds does not go out or begins to flash, a SRS malfunction has been detected.
Observe these precautions when working with air bag systems
- Disable SRS before servicing any SRS or steering column component. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(/land-rover/range-rover/l322-2002-2005/remont/restraints/#air-bag-deactivation-procedures) .
- WAIT at least 3 minutes after disabling SRS before servicing vehicle. SRS voltage is maintained for at least 3 minutes after system is disabled. Servicing system before waiting 3 minutes may cause accidental SRS deployment and possible personal injury.
- Air bag will operate only when ignition switch is in ON or START position. Ignition switch should be in OFF position when working under hood or inside vehicle.
- DO NOT attempt to repair, splice or modify SRS wiring harness. If harness is damaged, replace it with a new one.
- When servicing vehicle, air bag module should be pointed away from technician.
- DO NOT use a circuit tester to check air bag harness connectors. SRS wiring harness and connectors have Yellow insulation for easy identification. Keep all ground points clean.
- Impact sensor(s), safing sensor and tunnel sensor must be installed with arrow marks facing front of vehicle. Also, check sensors for cracks, defects and rust before installation. Replace sensors as necessary.
- If steering gear is removed, DO NOT turn steering wheel or column shaft. Rotation of SRS spiral cable under steering wheel air bag module is limited. SRS spiral cable must be aligned in neutral position (centered).
- On vehicles equipped with passenger's side air bag module ON/OFF switch, ensure ON/OFF switch is in the same position as when vehicle was brought in for service.
- Handle air bag modules carefully. Always place air bag modules with pad facing upward. DO NOT disassemble air bag module.
- DO NOT use old bolts after removal; replace with new ones.
- DO NOT insert any foreign objects (screwdriver, etc.) into air bag module connector.
- Replace air bag module if it has been dropped or sustained an impact.
- After servicing SRS system, perform «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(/land-rover/range-rover/l322-2002-2005/remont/restraints/#air-bag-deactivation-procedures) .
- DO NOT expose air bag module to temperatures exceeding 194°F (90°C).
- DO NOT expose seat belt pretensioners to temperatures exceeding 176°F (80°C).
- DO NOT allow oil, grease or water to contact air bag module or seat belt pretensioner assembly.
- If vehicle is damaged in a collision, check impact sensor, tunnel and safing sensors and related wiring harnesses.
- Wear gloves when handling deployed air bag module.
- Before discarding an air bag module or seat belt pretensioner (including scrapping a vehicle with air bag system), always deploy air bag(s) and seat belt pretensioners.
- Always place the side curtain air bag module with the warning label facing upward.
- DO NOT attempt to disassemble side curtain air bag module.
| WARNING | Some vehicles are equipped with a passenger's side air bag ON/OFF switch. This switch should NOT be used in place of specified vehicle air bag system disabling and activating procedures. |

- Never apply grease to SRS connectors.
Note. Saab vehicles are equipped with seat belt pretensioners. The SRS controls both air bags and seat belt pretensioners.
Note. The control module has 3 backup power sources. Two of them enable the front air bags to be activated for a minimum of 150 milliseconds after the regular power supply has failed and the third backup power source keeps the processor going for 150 milliseconds after the regular power supply has failed.
To disable SRS, disconnect and shield negative battery cable. To activate system, reconnect negative battery cable. Perform a system operation check. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
Turn ignition switch to ON position. Air bag warning light should illuminate for about 6 seconds. Keep ignition switch in ON position and confirm that air bag warning light remains off for about 6 seconds after being illuminated.
Observe these precautions when working with air bag systems
- If air bag system sensors, air bag module, air bag control module, seat belt pretensioners and/or harness are deformed or damaged, replace them with NEW manufacturer components.
- DO NOT drop air bag system components.
- DO NOT subject air bag system components to temperatures greater than 199°F (93°C).
- DO NOT use air bag system components from other vehicles. ONLY use NEW manufacturer components.
- NEVER reuse any deployed air bag system components.
- Only use a digital circuit tester to check air bag system. An analog circuit tester may cause air bag system to activate.
- When checking air bag system harness, use a test harness. DO NOT directly probe air bag system harness connectors with tester probes.
- DO NOT check continuity of driver, passenger's or side air bag modules and pretensioner. Doing so could cause air bag component to activate.
- DO NOT allow water, oil or grease to come in contact with air bag system components or connector terminals. DO NOT touch component connector terminals.
- DO NOT disassemble driver, passenger's or side air bag modules or pretensioner. They are not repairable.
- If any damage, opening or rust is found on the air bag system wire harness, DO NOT attempt to repair using soldering equipment. Be sure to replace faulty harness with a NEW manufacturer component.
- Install wire harness securely with specified clips to avoid interference or tangling with other components.
- When painting or performing body panel repairs on the front of the vehicle, including the front wheel apron, front fender and front side of frame, remove air bag system front sub sensors and wire harness.
- When painting or performing body panel repairs on the either side of the vehicle, including the side sill, center pillar and front or rear doors, remove air bag system side sensors and wire harness.
- A removed front seat with a side air bag must be kept more than 8" (200 mm) away from walls or other objects.
- When storing a removed air bag module, DO NOT place any objects on top of it or pile air bag modules on top of each other. If the air bag module activates with an object on top of it or with pad side down, a serious accident may result.
- After removal, place air bag component with pad facing up, on a clean, dry and flat surface away from sources of heat, light, moisture and dust.
Note. Air bag system has a back-up power supply. If the air bag system is serviced within 20 seconds after the battery cable is disconnected the air bag system may be activated.
To disable air bag system, turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect and shield negative battery cable and WAIT for more than 20 seconds before starting repair procedures. To activate system, ensure ignition switch is in OFF position. Reconnect negative battery cable. Perform a system operation check. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
Turn ignition switch to ON position. On Aerio and XL-7, if system is functioning normally, AIR BAG indicator should flash 6 times. On Grand Vitara and Vitara, if system is functioning normally, AIR BAG indicator should flash 7 times. On all models, if air bag warning light does not come on, stays on steady or keeps flashing after flashing 6 or 7 times, there is a fault in the air bag system.
Observe the following precautions when servicing SRS
- Disable air bag system before servicing any air bag or steering column component. Failure to disable air bag could result in accidental air bag deployment and possible personal injury. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(/land-rover/range-rover/l322-2002-2005/remont/restraints/#air-bag-deactivation-procedures) .
- Never power up air bag system when SDM is not rigidly attached to the vehicle. Failure to follow procedures could result in possible air bag system activation, personal injury or unnecessary air bag system repairs.
- Always wear safety glasses when servicing or handling an air bag.
- The air bag module and seat belt pretensioner immediately after deployment/activation are very hot. Wait for at least 30 minutes for components to cool off before proceeding the work.
- DO NOT apply water, oil or anything else to deployed air bag module or to seat belt pretensioner.
- After an air bag module has been deployed, the surface of the air bag may contain a powdery residue. This powder consists primarily of cornstarch (used to lubricate the bag as it inflates) and by-products of the chemical reaction. During many service procedures, wear gloves and safety glasses. Wash your hands with mild soap and water after completing the work.
- Handle air bag module(s) carefully. Always place air bag module(s) with pad facing upward. DO NOT disassemble air bag module.
- If the air bag system and another vehicle system both need repair, the air bag system must be repaired first to avoid unintended air bag deployment.
- DO NOT modify steering wheel, dashboard, or any other air bag system component. Modifications can adversely affect air bag system performance and lead to personal injury.
- Never use air bag parts from another vehicle. Replace air bag parts with new parts.
- Remove air bag modules and SDM if repairing the vehicle requires exposing the vehicle to temperatures over 200°F (93°C). Never expose air bag system components directly to hot air or flames.
- NEVER expose air bag system components directly to hot air (drying or baking the vehicle after painting) or flames.
- If painting vehicle, DO NOT expose air bag harness or connectors to paint mist.
- Store live air bag modules at temperatures below 150°F (65°C) with low humidity, and away from electrical noise.
- When placing a live air bag on a bench or other surface, always face air bag and trim cover up, away from surface. This will reduce motion of module if it is accidentally deployed.
- Replace any air bag components that have been dropped from a height of 3 feet (90 cm) or more. Replace seat belt pretensioner (retractor assembly) if it is dropped from a height of one foot (30 cm) or more.
- NEVER attempt disassembly or repair of air bag components or seat belt pretensioners. Components are not repairable and must be replaced if damaged.
- When servicing vehicle if shocks (as from a hammer or mallet) may be applied near air bag system sensors or other components, remove those components first.
- DO NOT allow any electrical source near inflator on the back of air bag module. To avoid deployment when troubleshooting the air bag system, DO NOT use electrical test equipment such as a battery powered or AC powered voltmeter, ohmmeter or any type of electrical equipment other than that specified. DO NOT use a non-powered probe type tester.
- DO NOT apply power to the air bag system unless all components are connected or a diagnostic procedure requests it, as this will set a diagnostic trouble code.
- When using electric welding equipment, always disconnect driver's and passenger's air bag module connectors.
- Never use air bag components from another vehicle.
- Air bag wire harness can be identified easily because it is covered with a Yellow protection tube and is included in floor harness. Be very careful when handling it.
- Replace air bag wire harness when an open, short or other damage to wire harness, connector or terminal is found. Replace wire harness, connectors and terminals as an assembly. When installing it, ensure that the air bag wire harness is not caught or does not interfere with other parts.
- Ensure air bag system grounding points are clean and grounds are securely fastened for optimum metal-to-metal contact. Poor grounding can cause intermittent problems that are difficult to diagnose.
Note. With AIR BAG fuse removed and ignition on, AIR BAG warning light will be on. This is normal and does not indicate an air bag system malfunction.

- Obtain radio anti-theft code (if equipped) from vehicle owner and write down preset radio frequencies. To disable air bag system, ensure ignition is off and key is removed. Disconnect and shield negative battery cable.
- To activate system, turn ignition switch to ON position. Ensure no one is inside vehicle and connect negative battery cable. Perform system operation check to ensure proper system operation. See «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(/land-rover/range-rover/l322-2002-2005/remont/restraints/#air-bag-deactivation-procedures) .
- Check that the Supplementary Restraint System (SRS) indicator light is not defective by turning ignition key to ON position. SRS indicator light will illuminate and go out after approximately 7 seconds for all models except the C70 Convertible, which is 3 seconds or the S40 and V40 models, which is 10 seconds. Ensure SRS indicator light in combined instrument panel is not constantly illuminated. Repair SRS fault if SRS light is constantly illuminated.
- If vehicle is equipped with Roll Over Protection (ROP) system, when the ignition is turned to ON position the ROP light should illuminate for approximately 5 seconds and then go out.
- On XC90 equipped with Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Module include Roll Over Protection (ROP). The SRS control module must not be removed, moved to another position or worked on unless power supply is disconnected. If power supply is disconnected, air bags and seat belt tensioners may deploy. SRS module is located between the parking brake and gear selector lever in center console. NEVER install car accessories on or near SRS Module.
- C70 Convertible is equipped with a Roll Over Protection (ROP) system. The ROP roll-over bar is raised by a spring with a force sufficient to cause injury. It is important that no one is standing above the roll-over bar when it is deployed. The roll-over bar operating range is approximately 20" (50 cm), which is also the safety distance from the bar. No repairs are permitted on the roll-over bar cassette. If there is a fault in the roll-over bar, the whole cassette should be replaced.
- Air bag modules/pyrotechnical seat belt tensioners must never be taken apart, repaired or transferred to another vehicle.
- Under no circumstances use an ohmmeter or other live measuring instrument to take readings on a disconnected non deployed air bag or pyrotechnical seat belt tensioner. This could deploy the air bag or pyrotechnical seat belt tensioner.
- Never take a resistance reading across air bags or seat belt tensioners if a DTC is stored for too high or low igniter resistance. Special tools with the same resistance as the air bag or seat belt tensioner must be used for fault-tracing.
- When storing or transporting air bag modules/pyrotechnical seat belt tensioners, they should be handled in accordance with national statutory regulations.
- Battery must not be connected when the steering wheel air bag module connector is disconnected. If battery must be connected, install special tool (998-8695) to SRS steering wheel air bag module connector. This is to prevent vehicle SRS On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) system setting a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). If ignition switch is turned to ON position with air bag module connector disconnected, an open circuit DTC will be set. DTCs must be cleared.
- DO NOT turn steering wheel when contact reel is locked. The contact reel locking pin will break off.
- DO NOT open any SRS component.
- The inflatable curtain must never be unscrewed, repaired or moved to another vehicle. DO NOT remove, loosen or tighten any mounting screws.
- DO NOT fold or twist inflatable curtain during removal or installation. The inflatable curtain module must be handled with both hands, with one hand holding gas generator. The inflatable curtain module must be kept level. Avoid twisting or bending the inflatable curtain module as much as possible.
- Any SRS component must be returned if there is any visible damage.
- DO NOT position or install accessories or any other components in the area near SRS components. Failure to observe this instruction may cause SRS component to fail.
- The SRS system must always be worked on by a qualified technician.
- When removing a non deployed steering wheel module, module should be placed with metal side (rear) facing downwards somewhere where it will not be handled carelessly (in the luggage compartment for example).
- When the air bag is deployed powder is spread throughout the car. The chemical reaction that creates the gas can also produce certain by-products such as calcium chloride. When decontaminating a car with a deployed air bag wear gloves, protective goggles, overalls and a face mask. Exposure to the powder can cause the following problems: Eye Contact Symptoms may include burning or grittiness. Flush immediately, using copious amounts of water for AT LEAST 15 minutes. See a doctor if the symptoms persist. Skin Contact Symptoms may include a burning sensation. Wash thoroughly using a mild soap solution and water. Open Wounds Wounds may be aggravated. Avoid exposure and carefully clean thoroughly.
S40 & V40
- To disable air bag system, make a note of radio code if anti-theft coded radio is installed. Turn ignition switch to OFF position and remove key. Disconnect and isolate battery negative cable. Wait 3 minutes before starting work.
- To activate air bag system, ensure nobody is in the vehicle when battery is connected. This is a safety precaution in case an air bag module activates when the power is connected. When all components have been reinstalled, turn ignition switch to ON position (II). Connect battery negative cable. Perform system operation check to ensure proper system operation. See «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(/land-rover/range-rover/l322-2002-2005/remont/restraints/#air-bag-deactivation-procedures) .

Note. Before disconnecting negative battery cable, if the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) illuminates, record any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) for the engine management system. Whenever possible, repair any DTCS before disconnecting negative battery cable.
- To disable air bag system, make a note of radio code if anti-theft coded radio installed. Turn ignition switch to OFF position (0) and wait at least 5 minutes before disconnecting negative battery cable. This allows sufficient time for information to be stored in the control modules. Disconnect negative battery cable and WAIT at least 10 SECONDS before starting work. DO NOT disconnect positive battery cable in the engine compartment.
- To activate air bag system, ensure nobody is in the vehicle when battery is connected. This is a safety precaution in case an air bag module activates when the power is connected. When all components have been reinstalled, turn ignition switch to ON position (II). Connect negative battery cable. Perform system operation check to ensure proper system operation. See «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(/land-rover/range-rover/l322-2002-2005/remont/restraints/#air-bag-deactivation-procedures) .
- After reconnecting negative battery cable the Upper Electronic Module (UEM) must be initialized. Initialize the central locking, interior lighting and sun roof by unlocking vehicle using a remote control, ignition key or VADIS vehicle communication. If vehicle is equipped with Manual Climate Control (MCC) or Standard Climate Control (SCC), the blower fan speed must recalibrated if the battery has been disconnected.
- Turn ignition to ON position. Turn blower fan switch to maximum and then turn blower fan switch to minimum. The calibration is complete. To calibrate sun roof, close sun roof and operate sun roof switch so that sun roof is in tilt position. Release switch and press the button again for at least 5 seconds. Release the switch and the calibration is complete. To calibrate the engine control module after battery has been disconnected and reconnected, may require driving vehicle for a few minutes before engine runs normally.
