DRAINING & REFILLING COOLING SYSTEM

WARNINGDO NOT remove expansion tank pressure cap when engine is hot. Serious injury such as scalding can be caused by escaping steam or hot coolant.

CHECK & TOP-UP

  1. Check coolant level, top-up to MAX mark if necessary. With engine cold, remove expansion tank filler cap.
  2. Top-up with recommended mixture of coolant and anti-freeze until float is at its highest position in the filler neck. (Scheme 2)
  3. Check anti-freeze concentration. Check "O" rings on filler cap for condition, replace if necessary. Install expansion tank filler cap.

Drain

  1. Position vehicle on lift. Set heater controls to maximum. Disconnect battery ground lead. See «DISCONNECTING & RECONNECTING BATTERY»(/land-rover/range-rover/l322-2002-2005/remont/accessory-drive-belts/#specifications-drive-belt-routing__disconnecting-reconnecting-battery).
  2. Remove coolant expansion tank cap. Remove undertray. See «UNDERTRAY»(/land-rover/range-rover/l322-2002-2005/remont/accessory-drive-belts/#specifications-drive-belt-routing) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  3. Position container beneath radiator to collect coolant. Install tube to drain tap, open tap and allow coolant to drain. (Scheme 3) Position container beneath engine to collect coolant. Remove cylinder block drain plug and allow coolant to drain. (Scheme 4) Discard sealing washer. Remove container.

Refill

  1. Close radiator drain tap and remove tube. Using a NEW sealing washer, fit cylinder block drain plug and tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/land-rover/range-rover/l322-2002-2005/remont/accessory-drive-belts/#specifications-drive-belt-routing__torque-specifications). Connect battery ground lead.
  2. Remove bleed screw from expansion tank. (Scheme 5) Fill cooling system, keeping coolant to neck of expansion tank until a steady stream of coolant is emitted from bleed screw hole. Install and tighten bleed screw.
  3. Install coolant expansion tank cap. Run engine until normal operating temperature is reached. Turn engine off and allow to cool. Check for leaks and fill expansion tank to MAX mark. (Scheme 2)
  4. Clean coolant from body and surrounding area. Install undertray. See «UNDERTRAY»(/land-rover/range-rover/l322-2002-2005/remont/accessory-drive-belts/#specifications-drive-belt-routing) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.

Disconnecting & Reconnecting Battery

WARNINGVehicles are equipped with air bag supplemental restraint system. Before attempting any repairs involving steering column, instrument panel or related components, see SERVICE PRECAUTIONS (or AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS) and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article.
CAUTIONIt is imperative that the key is removed from the ignition before disconnecting the battery. Never disconnect the battery with the ignition switched on.
CAUTIONWAIT at least 2 minutes before battery is disconnected after turning ignition to OFF position. Failure to do so could result in Navigation computer hardware damage and/or an incorrect fuel gauge reading.
CAUTIONTo prevent damage to electrical components, always disconnect the battery when working on the vehicle's electrical system.
CAUTIONAfter reconnecting the battery, the steering wheel must be turned to full left and right lock (with engine running). This allows the DSC system to relearn the steering wheel position. Failure to do so will result in a variety of instrument warning lights being illuminated.
CAUTIONAlways ensure that battery leads are routed correctly and are not close to any potential chafing points.
  1. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key from ignition switch before disconnecting battery. A time of at least 2 minutes must also elapse before disconnection. Failure to do so could result in: Navigation computer hardware damage. Incorrect fuel gauge reading.
  2. Before disconnecting the battery, disable the alarm system and switch off all electrical equipment. If the radio is to be serviced, ensure radio security code has been deactivated.
  3. The ground lead must be disconnected first and reconnected last. Ensure battery leads are routed correctly and are not close to any potential chafing points.
  4. After reconnecting the battery, the steering wheel must be turned to full left and right lock (with engine running). This allows the DSC system to relearn the steering wheel position. Failure to do so will result in a variety of instrument warning lights being illuminated.

THERMOSTAT

Note. The thermostat heater is serviced with the thermostat and must not be removed.

Removal

  1. Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect battery ground lead. See «DISCONNECTING & RECONNECTING BATTERY»(/land-rover/range-rover/l322-2002-2005/remont/accessory-drive-belts/#specifications-drive-belt-routing__disconnecting-reconnecting-battery).
  2. Drain cooling system. See «DRAIN & REFILL»(/land-rover/range-rover/l322-2002-2005/remont/accessory-drive-belts/#specifications-drive-belt-routing) under DRAINING & REFILLING COOLING SYSTEM. Remove engine acoustic cover. Remove air intake hose.
  3. Disconnect vacuum pipes from air intake pipe. Release 2 clips and disconnect air intake pipe from throttle body. Remove air intake pipe. Remove seal from air intake pipe, at MAF sensor connection end.
  4. Remove clips from air intake pipe. Disconnect thermostat heater connector. (Scheme 9) Release clip and disconnect radiator bottom hose from thermostat housing. Remove 4 bolts and remove thermostat housing from coolant pump. (Scheme 10) Discard seal.
