AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION & TRANSFER BOX

The ZP 5HP24 transmission is designed to be maintenance free and uses a "fill for life" transmission fluid.

Transfer Box

The NV225 transfer box is a "fill for life" unit and no level check is required at service unless a leak is present.

CHECKING FLUID LEVEL

WARNINGAvoid excessive skin contact with mineral oil. Mineral oils remove the natural fats from the skin, leading to dryness, irritation and dermatitis.
WARNINGObserve due care when draining transmission fluid as the fluid can be very hot.
CAUTIONThe automatic transmission fluid level must only be checked when the temperature of the fluid is between 86-104°F (30-40°C). The reading obtained will be incorrect if the fluid is outside this temperature range.
  1. Position vehicle on lift. Apply handbrake and position chocks under front and rear wheels. Connect TestBook/T4 to monitor transmission fluid temperature.
  2. Start engine and move selector lever from Park through all gear positions, pausing in each gear position for 2-3 seconds and return to Park position.
  3. Clean area around filler/level plug. (Scheme 1) With the engine running, remove filler/level plug and allow excess fluid to drain off.
  4. If no fluid loss is apparent when filler/level plug is removed, with the engine at idle, continue to fill transmission with recommended fluid until a small thread of fluid runs from oil filler/level plug hole.
  5. Move selector lever from Park through each gear position and return to Park, allowing any excess fluid to drain off. See «RECOMMENDED FLUID»(/land-rover/range-rover/iii-2002-2005/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-automatic-transmission).
  6. Fit NEW sealing washer and tighten filler/level plug to 35 N.m (26 lbs. ft.). Lower vehicle. Turn engine off. Disconnect TestBook/T4.

Scheme 1
  1. Raise and support vehicle. Place drain pan under transfer box. Clean area around filler/level plug. Remove filler/level plug and discard sealing washer.
  2. A thread of oil should run from filler/level hole, allow sufficient time for oil to find a common level. Top off fluid as necessary. See «RECOMMENDED FLUID»(/land-rover/range-rover/iii-2002-2005/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-automatic-transmission) .
  3. Clean filler/level plug and fit NEW sealing washer. Fit filler/level plug and tighten to 25 N.m (18 lbs. ft.).

Use only Esso LT71141 automatic transmission fluid, Part No. STC4863.

Use only Castrol BOT26FMB1 75W-90 fluid, Part No. STC4861. The oil contains unique additives which enhance the transfer box operation. No other oil must be used in the transfer box.

DRAINING & REFILLING

WARNINGObserve due care when draining automatic transmission fluid as the fluid can be very hot.

Note. The fluid should be drained with the transmission at normal operating temperature.

  1. Drain Position vehicle on lift. Apply handbrake and position chocks under front and rear wheels.
  2. Position container under automatic transmission. Clean area around drain plug. (Scheme 2)
  3. Remove drain plug and discard sealing washer. Allow fluid to drain. Clean sump drain plug, fit NEW sealing washer and tighten to 25 N.m (18 lbs. ft.).
  4. Refill Clean area around filler/level plug. (Scheme 3) Remove filler/level plug and discard sealing washer.
  5. Add 7.4-8.5 Pts. (3.5-4.0 L) of correct fluid through automatic transmission level/filler hole. See «RECOMMENDED FLUID»(/land-rover/range-rover/iii-2002-2005/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-automatic-transmission).
  6. Fit NEW sealing washer and tighten filler/level plug to 35 N.m (26 lbs. ft.). Check and top-up fluid level.

  1. Drain Position vehicle on lift. Position container to collect spillage.
  2. Remove drain plug and discard sealing washer. (Scheme 4) Allow oil to drain.
  3. Clean drain plug and mating face, using NEW sealing washer, fit and tighten plug to 25 N.m (18 lbs. ft.).
  4. Refill Clean area around filler/level plug. (Scheme 5) Remove filler/level plug and discard sealing washer.
  5. Fill transfer box until a thread of oil runs from filler/level hole with correct fluid. See «RECOMMENDED FLUID»(/land-rover/range-rover/iii-2002-2005/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-automatic-transmission). Allow sufficient time for oil to find a common level.
  6. Clean filler/level plug and fit new sealing washer. Fit filler/level plug and tighten to 25 N.m (18 lbs. ft.).

KICKDOWN CABLE

Range Rover kickdown is electronically controlled.

Check

  1. Move selector lever from Park, check gear engagement in each position and return to Park.
  2. Check that the engine will start in Park and Neutral positions and that engine start is inhibited when drive positions are selected.

Adjust

  1. Position vehicle on lift. Move the selector lever to Park position. Raise vehicle on lift.
  2. Using 2 spanners, restrain trunnion and loosen nut securing inner cable to selector lever. (Scheme 6)
  3. Move selector lever on automatic transmission fully clockwise to engage Park position. Tighten trunnion nut to 15 N.m (11 lbs. ft.).
  4. Lower vehicle on lift. Move selector lever from Park, check gear engagement in each position and return to Park.
  5. Check that the engine will start in Park and Neutral positions and that engine start is inhibited when drive positions are selected.

Removal

  1. Drain automatic transmission fluid. See «DRAINING & REFILLING»(/land-rover/range-rover/iii-2002-2005/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-automatic-transmission__draining-refilling).
  2. Remove nut securing selector lever to automatic transmission selector shaft and release lever. (Scheme 7) Remove 2 bolts securing inhibitor switch guard and remove guard.
  3. Evenly and progressively loosen and remove 22 Torx bolts from oil pan. (Scheme 8)
  4. Remove oil pan and discard gasket. Remove 2 Torx bolts and remove oil filter from valve block. (Scheme 9) Discard "O" ring.
