RIDING HEIGHT CHECK
Note. Prior to performing wheel alignment, perform preliminary visual and mechanical inspection of wheels, tires and suspension components. See PRE-ALIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS in WHEEL ALIGNMENT THEORY & OPERATION article in GENERAL INFORMATION.
Before adjusting alignment, check vehicle riding height. Riding height must be checked with vehicle on level floor and tires properly inflated. Refer to identification label located in driver's door jamb for proper tire size and inflation pressure. Bounce vehicle several times and allow suspension to settle.
Visually inspect vehicle for signs of abnormal height from front-to-rear and side-to-side. Remove heavy items from passenger and luggage compartments. If riding height is not within specifications or is significantly different from side-to-side, repair or replace suspension components as necessary. See RIDING HEIGHT SPECIFICATIONS table.

JACKING & HOISTING
| CAUTION | Manufacturer DOES NOT recommend use of single or 2-post hoists with 4 adjustable support arms. The manufacturer does not consider these hoist designs safe for lifting Land Rover vehicles. Vehicle can only be raised and supported by axles. DO NOT position jack or safety stands under any part of the body or bumpers, radius arms, steering linkage, anti-sway bar, torsion rod, rear trailing links, or any engine or drive train component. ALWAYS check vehicle stability before beginning repairs. |
FLOOR JACK
Note. On Range Rover, before lifting vehicle, ensure that the air suspension system is set to standard or high position and disabled (remove key from ignition switch, and open any door or the tailgate).
When using a floor jack to raise vehicle, minimum capacity of floor jack must be at least 3,300 lbs. When raising vehicle, position floor jack cup on differential housing of front or rear axle. Support vehicle with safety stands positioned on axle housing tube, under spring mount, next to shock mount. (Scheme 1)
HOIST
Manufacturer recommends using a drive-on type hoist which supports vehicle on drive wheels. If necessary to support vehicle in a wheel-free condition, use a drive-on hoist with wheel-free support system positioned under axle housings. (Scheme 1)

WHEEL ALIGNMENT PROCEDURES
Note. Camber, caster and steering axis inclination are not adjustable. See WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS table for specification.
Defender
- Raise and support vehicle. See «JACKING & HOISTING»(/land-rover/range-rover/ii-1994-2002/remont/wheel-alignment/#specifications-procedures__jacking-hoisting) . Using a Ball Joint Separator (LRT-57-018), disconnect drag link at pitman arm. Gently turn steering wheel to full right lock position. Turn steering wheel back exactly 2 turns. Reconnect drag link to pitman arm. Tighten drag link nut to 30 ft. lbs. (41 N.m).
- Road test vehicle ensuring steering wheel is straight. If steering wheel is to the right, drag link is too short. If steering wheel is to the left, drag link is too long. Loosen drag link adjuster sleeve clamps and turn sleeve until steering wheel is straight. Tighten adjusting sleeve clamp bolts to 10 ft. lbs. (14 N.m). Test drive vehicle and recheck.
Discovery
- Raise and support vehicle. See «JACKING & HOISTING»(/land-rover/range-rover/ii-1994-2002/remont/wheel-alignment/#specifications-procedures__jacking-hoisting) . Using a Ball Joint Separator (LRT-57-018), disconnect drag link at pitman arm. Locate notch at shaft end of pitman arm. Using a 5/16" (8 mm) pin, line up notch in pitman arm with hole in power steering box housing. Remove pin and note position of steering wheel.
- On left-hand drive vehicles, if steering wheel is to the right, drag link is too short.
Range Rover
- Move vehicle backwards and forwards at least 2 vehicle lengths to ensure front wheels are pointed straight ahead. Locate alignment markings on steering box and pinion. When alignment markings are aligned, steering box is centered. If steering box is not centered, go to next step. If steering box is centered, ensure alignment is okay. If steering wheel is not centered, remove steering wheel and reinstall centered. See STEERING COLUMNS article in STEERING.
- Loosen drag link adjuster clamps nut and bolt. Turn drag link adjuster until alignment markings on steering box and pinion are aligned. Tighten drag link adjuster clamps nut and bolt enough to keep adjuster from moving. Turn steering wheel from stop-to-stop and ensure there is no interference between pitman arm and adjuster clamps. Tighten drag link adjuster clamp 8-mm bolt to 16 ft. lbs. (22 N.m) and adjuster clamp 10-mm bolt to 35 ft. lbs. (47 N.m). Road test vehicle over an even surface and ensure steering wheel alignment is okay and vehicle tracks straight.
Steering Lock-To-Lock Adjustment (Defender & Discovery)
- Measure steering stop bolt adjustment from top of stop bolt to surface of hub on lock nut side. (Scheme 2) On Defender, measurement should be 2.35" (59.7 mm). On Discovery, measurement should be 1.59" (40.5 mm). On all models, if measurement is not as specified, loosen steering stop bolt lock nut and turn stop bolt as necessary. Tighten stop bolt lock nut. Go to next step.
- Check clearance between inside of tire and radius arm. Turn steering wheel left and right to full lock position. Measure clearance between inside of tire and radius arm with steering at full lock position. (Scheme 3)or (Scheme 4). If clearance on either side is less than 0.79" (20 mm), loosen steering stop bolt lock nut. Turn steering stop bolt until clearance is as specified. Tighten steering stop bolt lock nut. Ensure number of turns required to turn steering wheel from lock-to-lock is within specification. See «WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS»(/land-rover/range-rover/ii-1994-2002/remont/wheel-alignment/#specifications-procedures__wheel-alignment-specifications).
Scheme 2
Steering Wheel Lock-To-Lock Adjustment (Range Rover)
- Raise and support vehicle. See «JACKING & HOISTING»(/land-rover/range-rover/ii-1994-2002/remont/wheel-alignment/#specifications-procedures__jacking-hoisting) . Loosen left side steering stop bolt lock nut. Turn stop bolt clockwise, fully into hub. Start engine and allow it to idle. Turn steering wheel right to full lock position until resistance is felt and hold (resistance is created by hydraulic limiter inside steering box).
- Turn stop bolt counterclockwise until it contacts axle. Turn stop bolt clockwise 3 flats (about one-half turn) and tighten lock nut. Center steering wheel. Turn steering wheel right to full lock position. Resistance should be felt just before axle contacts steering stop bolt. Repeat procedure for right side steering stop bolt. When completed, ensure resistance is felt just before axle contacts steering stop bolt. Ensure number of turns required to turn steering wheel from lock-to-lock is within specification. See «WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS»(/land-rover/range-rover/ii-1994-2002/remont/wheel-alignment/#specifications-procedures__wheel-alignment-specifications) .
TOE ADJUSTMENT
Note. Check tires for irregular wear and proper inflation. Ensure camber, caster and steering axis inclination are within specification. See WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS . If camber, caster and steering axis inclination are not within specification, inspect suspension and repair as necessary.
- Roll vehicle backwards and forwards to settle linkage. Install alignment equipment according to manufacturer's instructions. Check toe adjustment. See «WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATION»(/land-rover/range-rover/ii-1994-2002/remont/wheel-alignment/#specifications-procedures__wheel-alignment-specifications) table. If toe adjustment is not within specification, go to next step. If toe adjustment is within specification, ensure track rod clamp bolts are tightened to 10 ft. lbs. (14 N.m).
- Loosen clamp bolts at both ends of track rod. (Scheme 3) Rotate track rod to increase or decrease toe adjustment. When toe adjustment is completed, push vehicle backwards turning steering wheel from side-to-side to settle linkage. Set wheels to a straight-ahead position and push vehicle forward to original position.
- Recheck toe adjustment and correct as necessary. Turn steering wheel from lock-to-lock and ensure there is full, unrestricted movement of track rod. Tap the side of the track rod ends to ensure unrestricted movement of track rod. Tighten track rod clamp bolts to 10 ft. lbs. (14 N.m). Road test vehicle over an even surface. Ensure steering wheel alignment is okay and vehicle tracks straight. If steering wheel is not straight, see «CENTERING STEERING WHEEL»(/land-rover/range-rover/ii-1994-2002/remont/wheel-alignment/#specifications-procedures).
Scheme 3
