SPECIAL CARE DURING MECHANICAL REPAIRS

WARNINGTo avoid injury from accidental air bag deployment, read and carefully follow all SERVICE PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM procedures.
WARNINGSome vehicles are equipped with a passenger's side air bag ON/OFF switch. This switch should NOT be used in place of specified vehicle air bag system disabling and activating procedures.
WARNINGDO NOT use any type of back-up power supply (memory saver) from outside vehicle to avoid memory loss in memory systems, if equipped. Back-up power supplies can provide enough voltage to deploy air bags.

Note. When the battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory system may lose data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle.

In some instances, it may be necessary to remove steering column or instrument panel to gain access to blower motor housing, heater assembly, evaporator assembly, or other A/C-heater system related components. Observe manufacturer service precautions when working on a vehicle equipped with an air bag system. See appropriate manufacturer's SERVICE PRECAUTIONS.

Electrical sources should never be allowed near inflator on back of air bag module. Never probe air bag system electrical wires with analog volt-ohmmeter or test light. Always disable air bag system before servicing vehicle. See appropriate DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM procedure. Failure to do so could result in accidental air bag deployment and possible personal injury.

If air bag system is not fully functional for any reason, DO NOT drive vehicle until system is repaired and is again operational. DO NOT remove bulbs, modules, sensors or other components, or in any way disable system from operating normally. If air bag system is not functional, park vehicle until system is repaired and functions properly.

DISCOVERY

On Discovery, AIRBAG SRS Red light illuminates when ignition switch is turned to position II (ON) and goes out after about 4 seconds. If the light illuminates at any other time, the system has detected a SRS fault.

FREELANDER

On Freelander, AIRBAG SRS Red light illuminates when the ignition switch is turned to position II (ON) and goes out after about 5 seconds. If the light illuminates at any other time, the system has detected a SRS fault.

RANGE ROVER

On Range Rover, AIRBAG SRS Red light illuminates when the ignition switch is turned to position II (ON) and goes out after about 4 seconds. If the light illuminates at any other time, the system has detected a SRS fault.

SERVICE PRECAUTIONS

Observe the following precautions when servicing SRS

  1. Always follow the SRS precautions and the correct procedures for working on SRS components. Persons working on SRS must be fully trained and have been issued with copies of safety precautions.
  2. It is imperative that before any work is undertaken on the SRS system the appropriate information is read thoroughly.
  3. Disable SRS before servicing any SRS, instrument panel or steering column component. Failure to do this could result in accidental air bag and seat belt pretensioner deployment, and possible personal injury. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(/land-rover/freelander/l314-2003-2006/remont/restraints/#air-bag-deactivation-procedures__disabling-activating-air-bag-system) .
  4. After removing key from ignition switch and disconnecting battery cables, wait at least 10 minutes. SRS has a back-up power source which is capable of deploying air bags for up to 10 minutes after disconnecting battery cables. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(/land-rover/freelander/l314-2003-2006/remont/restraints/#air-bag-deactivation-procedures__disabling-activating-air-bag-system) .
  5. NEVER disconnect the battery with ignition switch in ON position.
  6. To prevent damage to the navigation computer hardware, WAIT at least 2 minutes after ignition switch is turned to OFF position before disconnecting negative battery cable.
  7. To prevent damage to electrical components, always disconnect the battery when working on the vehicle's electrical system. The ground lead must be disconnected first and reconnected last.
  8. Always ensure that battery leads are routed correctly and are not close to any potential chafing points.
  9. Before attempting to service SRS, remove key from ignition and disconnect both battery cables. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(/land-rover/freelander/l314-2003-2006/remont/restraints/#air-bag-deactivation-procedures__disabling-activating-air-bag-system) .
  10. DO NOT subject SRS components to temperatures greater than 185°F (85°C), high humidity, or electrical noise.
  11. DO NOT allow oil, grease, detergents, or cleaning solutions to come in contact with air bag module and seat belt pretensioner units.
  12. When placing an air bag module on a bench or other flat surface, ensure trim cover is facing up, away from surface. This will reduce motion of module if it is accidentally deployed.
  13. If air bag module or other components have been dropped, or there are cracks, dents or other defects visible, replace with NEW components.
  14. DO NOT attempt to measure resistance across air bag module squib connector terminals. DO NOT use powered circuit testers on air bag module or seat belt pretensioner connectors. Accidental air bag deployment is possible which could cause personal injury.
  15. Air bag modules and seat belt pretensioner units contain sodium azide which is a poisonous and flammable. Contact with water, acid or heavy metals may produce harmful or explosive compounds.
  16. After deployment, air bag surface will be very hot. WAIT at least 30 minutes before handling it. Always wear safety glasses, rubber gloves, and long-sleeved shirt when handling air bag or during clean up.
  17. DO NOT attempt to incinerate or dismantle an undeployed air bag. SRS components DO NOT contain any serviceable parts.
  18. DO NOT install components previously installed on another vehicle. Only use NEW components supplied by manufacturer.
  19. Special Torx bolts are necessary for installing the airbag module, DO NOT use other bolts. Ensure bolts are tightened to the correct torque. Always use NEW fasteners when replacing an SRS component.
  20. SRS wiring harness has a Yellow outer covering. DO NOT attempt to modify, splice or repair any part of SRS wiring harness. DO NOT install any electrical or electronic equipment into SRS wiring harness. Ensure SRS wiring harness is routed correctly and not pinched or trapped on other components.
  21. Ensure the SRS Diagnostic Control Unit (DCU) is always installed correctly. There must not be any gap between the DCU and the bracket to which it is mounted. An incorrectly mounted DCU could cause the system to malfunction.
  22. When carrying a live air bag module, trim cover must be pointed away from body to minimize injury in case of accidental air bag deployment.
  23. After SRS repairs have been completed, ensure system is functioning properly. See «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(/land-rover/freelander/l314-2003-2006/remont/restraints/#air-bag-deactivation-procedures) .
  24. If SRS is not fully functional for any reason, vehicle should not be driven until system is repaired and again becomes operational. DO NOT remove bulbs, modules, sensors or other components or in any way disable system from operating normally. If SRS is not functional, park vehicle until it is repaired and functions properly.
  25. NEVER transport airbag modules or seat belt pretensioners in the cabin of a vehicle. Always use the luggage compartment of the vehicle for carrying airbag modules and seat belt pretensioner units.
  26. Never attach anything to an airbag cover or any trim component covering an airbag module. DO NOT allow anything to rest on top of an airbag module.
  27. For front seat buckle type pretensioners, hold by the piston tube, with the open end of the piston tube pointing towards the ground and the buckle facing away from your body. DO NOT cover the end of the piston tube. DO NOT hold buckle pretensioners by the bracket assembly or steel cable. NEVER point the piston tube towards your body or other people.

DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM

CAUTIONOn Range Rover, equipped with navigation system, disconnecting vehicle battery before the navigation computer has shut down can cause permanent damage to the computer. After the ignition is switched off, the navigation computer remains ON for approximately 55 seconds. It then performs a memory back-up operation for approximately 5 seconds before shutting down into SLEEP mode. If the vehicle battery is disconnected during this critical 5-second backup period, it can cause a memory error in the navigation computer. This can render the computer unusable, so that when power is reapplied, the satellite navigation system will not power up, giving a blank screen. Should this be the case, the navigation computer will require replacement. It is imperative that key be removed from ignition switch at least 2 minutes before disconnecting battery. On all models, before disconnecting battery, disable alarm system and switch off all electrical equipment. Ensure radio security code has been recorded.

On Discovery, remove ignition key from ignition switch. Disconnect both battery leads, negative lead first. WAIT at least 10 minutes before starting work.

On Freelander, ensure SRS system is rendered safe by removing ignition key from the ignition switch. Disconnect both battery leads, ground lead first. WAIT at least 10 minutes for SRS DCU back-up power circuit to discharge. The SRS system uses energy reserve capacitors that keep the system active in the event of electrical supply failure under crash conditions. It is necessary to allow the capacitor sufficient time to discharge (10 minutes) in order to avoid the risk of accidental deployment.

On Range Rover, ensure SRS system is rendered safe by removing ignition key from ignition switch. Disconnect battery, ground lead first. WAIT at least 10 minutes for SRS power circuit to discharge before commencing work. SRS uses energy reserve capacitors to keep the system active in the event of electrical supply failure under crash conditions. It is necessary to allow the capacitors sufficient time to discharge (10 minutes) in order to avoid the risk of accidental deployment.

ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM

Note. On Range Rover, after reconnecting battery, turn the steering wheel to full left and right lock (with engine running). This allows DSC system to relearn steering wheel position. Failure to do so will result in a variety of instrument warning lights being illuminated.

On all models, ensure key is removed from ignition switch. Connect positive battery cable and then negative battery cable. Staying well away from air bag modules, turn ignition switch to ON position. Ensure AIR BAG indicator light operates properly. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
