ENGINE IDENTIFICATION

DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

The charging system comprises a battery and a Valeo generator. The battery must be of a sufficient capacity to operate the starter motor and operate various electrical systems in the vehicle. The generator charges the battery when the engine is running and increases its output as demand on the battery increases.

The Valeo generator is a 3-phase, field-sensed unit. An electronic voltage regulator controls output voltage by high frequency switching of rotor field circuit. Generator system uses a charge indicator warning light located in instrument panel. When ignition switch is turned to ON position battery voltage is supplied to charge indicator warning light, which illuminates as a bulb check. When generator supplied voltage to charge indicator warning light exceeds battery voltage, charge light ground is cancelled and it will go out. If generator supplied voltage becomes less than battery voltage, charge indicator warning light ground is restored, illuminates bulb to let driver know a malfunction has occurred in charging system.

Disconnect/Connect

CAUTIONTo prevent damage to electrical components, always disconnect the battery when working on the vehicle's electrical system. The ground lead must be disconnected first and reconnected last.
WARNINGAlways ensure that the battery leads are routed correctly and are not close to any potential chafing points.

Before disconnecting the battery, disable the alarm system and switch off all electrical equipment. If the radio is to be serviced, ensure the security code has been deactivated. Disconnect negative battery cable. Before connecting apply petroleum jelly to terminal. Connect negative battery cable.

DRIVE BELT TENSION

A serpentine drive belt is used to drive all accessories. Accessory drive belt tension is controlled by an automatic belt tensioner. Check accessory drive belt for signs of splits, fraying, oil contamination and wear. Replace as necessary.

PRELIMINARY CHARGING SYSTEM CHECK

Ensure battery is in good condition and has a circuit voltage of at least 12.3-12.6 volts. Ensure battery connections are clean and tight. Ensure battery charging area is well ventilated and that there are no open flames or sparks. Check condition of accessory drive belt. Ensure generator connections are clean and tight. Check for parasitic drain on battery.

CHARGE INDICATOR WARNING LIGHT

The charge indicator warning light is on when the ignition switch is in position II and the engine is not running. If the lamp remains lit when the engine is running, a fault has occurred with the battery charging system and should be corrected at the earliest opportunity. The lamp is controlled by an output direct from the alternator.

BENCH TESTING

Note. Bench testing information is not available from manufacturer.

Removal

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. See «BATTERY DISCONNECT/CONNECT»(/land-rover/freelander/l314-2003-2006/remont/charging-system/#generators-regulators).
  2. Remove top arm by unscrewing 4 bolts securing engine mounting bracket to engine front plate and remove bracket. (Scheme 1)
  3. Using a 3/8" square drive socket bar, raise accessory drive belt tensioner and release drive belt from generator pulley. (Scheme 2)
  4. Release and remove accessory drive belt from remaining pulleys.

Inspection

Examine drive belt for signs of wear. A drive belt with cracked ribs is acceptable. A drive belt that has loose or missing parts of ribs must be changed.

Installation

  1. Install NEW drive belt if needed to crankshaft pulley.
  2. Before installation, clean out pulley grooves and tensioner pulley running surface.
  3. Raise belt tensioner and connect drive belt to steering pump, generator and compressor pulleys. Ensure drive belt is correctly located in pulley grooves.
  4. Position engine mounting front bracket to engine front plate and tighten bolts to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/land-rover/freelander/l314-2003-2006/remont/charging-system/#generators-regulators__torque-specifications) .
  5. Install top arm.
  6. Connect negative battery cable.
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. See «BATTERY DISCONNECT/CONNECT»(/land-rover/freelander/l314-2003-2006/remont/charging-system/#generators-regulators).
  2. Remove accessory drive belt. See «ACCESSORY DRIVE BELT»(/land-rover/freelander/l314-2003-2006/remont/charging-system/#generators-regulators).
  3. Release battery lead terminal cover at generator, loosen terminal nut and disconnect lead from terminal. (Scheme 3)
  4. Disconnect generator multiplug.
  5. Remove lower bolt and upper nut and bolt securing generator to front mounting plate.
  6. Remove generator.
