AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

JATCO Transmission - Check & Fluid Top Off

WARNINGAvoid excessive skin contact with mineral oil. Mineral oils remove the natural fats from the skin, leading to dryness, irritation and dermatitis.
  1. Position vehicle on ramp. Apply handbrake and position chocks under front and rear wheels. Remove underbelly panel. See «UNDERBELLY PANEL»(/land-rover/freelander/l314-2003-2006/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-automatic-transaxle) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  2. Connect TestBook/T4 to monitor transmission fluid temperature. Start and run engine at idle speed. Move selector lever from Park through all gear positions, pausing in each gear position for 2-3 seconds and return to Park position.
  3. Clean area around transmission level plug. (Scheme 1) With engine still running, remove level plug using a 5-mm Allen wrench and allow any excess fluid to drain off.
  4. If no fluid loss is apparent when level plug is removed, remove filler plug and add fluid until it just runs from level plug aperture. (Scheme 2) Move selector lever from Park through each gear position and return to Park position. Allow any excess fluid to drain off.
  5. Install NEW level plug and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. Clean and install filler plug. Disconnect TestBook/T4. Install underbelly panel. See «UNDERBELLY PANEL»(/land-rover/freelander/l314-2003-2006/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-automatic-transaxle) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.

Intermediate Reduction Drive (IRD)

  1. Remove underbelly panel. See «UNDERBELLY PANEL»(/land-rover/freelander/l314-2003-2006/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-automatic-transaxle) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Place container under IRD unit. Clean area around filler/level and drain plugs.
  2. Using wrench LRT-41-021, remove filler plug and discard sealing washer. (Scheme 3) Remove drain plug, discard sealing washer and allow oil to drain. Install NEW sealing washer and tighten drain plug to 35 Nm (26 lbf.ft).
  3. Fill with fluid until it just runs from filler/level hole. Allow sufficient time for fluid to flow and reach a common level in unit. Install NEW sealing washer and tighten filler/level plug to 35 Nm (26 lbf.ft). Install underbelly panel. See «UNDERBELLY PANEL»(/land-rover/freelander/l314-2003-2006/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-automatic-transaxle) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.

JATCO A/T - Drain & Refill

WARNINGUse extreme care when draining transmission fluid as the fluid is VERY hot.

Note. Transmission fluid should be drained with transmission at normal operating temperature.

  1. Raise and support vehicle. Apply parking brake and position chocks under front and rear wheels. Remove underbelly panel. See «UNDERBELLY PANEL»(/land-rover/freelander/l314-2003-2006/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-automatic-transaxle) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  2. Position suitable container under transmission. Clean area around drain plug. (Scheme 4) Remove drain plug and discard sealing washer. Allow fluid to drain.
  3. Clean drain plug and install NEW sealing washer. Install drain plug and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS.
  4. Clean area around filler plug. (Scheme 2) Remove filler plug. Add correct amount of fluid through transmission filler hole. See «FLUID CAPACITIES»(/land-rover/freelander/l314-2003-2006/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-automatic-transaxle__fluid-capacities).
  5. Clean and install filler plug. Check and top off fluid level. See «CHECKING FLUID LEVEL»(/land-rover/freelander/l314-2003-2006/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-automatic-transaxle). Install underbelly panel. See «UNDERBELLY PANEL»(/land-rover/freelander/l314-2003-2006/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-automatic-transaxle) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.

RECOMMENDED FLUID

JATCO Transmission

Check JATCO transmission fluid level every 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first. Change JATCO transmission fluid every 60 months or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Check Intermediate Reduction Drive (IRD) fluid level every 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first. There is no specified fluid replacement interval required unless a leak is present.

INHIBITOR SWITCH

  1. Set gear selector lever to Neutral position. Loosen 2 bolts securing inhibitor switch to gearbox casing. (Scheme 5)
  2. Fit alignment tool LRT-44-018 to selector lever on gearbox, rotate inhibitor switch sufficient to insert tool alignment pin through tool lever into inhibitor switch. (Scheme 5)
  3. Tighten inhibitor switch bolts to 3 Nm (2.2 lbf.ft). Remove alignment tool LRT-44-018.
  4. Check that the engine will start in Park and Neutral positions and is inhibited when drive positions are selected.

KICKDOWN CABLE

Freelander JATCO transmission kickdown is electronically controlled. No adjustments are required.

Adjust

  1. Remove underbelly panel. See «UNDERBELLY PANEL»(/land-rover/freelander/l314-2003-2006/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-automatic-transaxle) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  2. Loosen trunnion nut securing inner cable to selector lever. (Scheme 6) Move gear change lever into Park position. Move selector lever on gearbox fully clockwise to engage Park position.
  3. Pull inner cable as far forward as possible, then release. This will remove any backlash from the cable. Tighten trunnion nut to 6 Nm (4 lbf.ft).
  4. Fit underbelly panel. See «UNDERBELLY PANEL»(/land-rover/freelander/l314-2003-2006/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-automatic-transaxle) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  5. Move selector lever through its working arc from Park to "2" position and back to Park. Check that all gear positions are correctly selected.
  6. Check that the engine will start in Park and Neutral positions and is inhibited when drive positions are selected.

Scheme 6

Scheme 6
  1. Remove engine acoustic cover. Before adjusting cable, ensure that cable is correctly routed and located. (Scheme 7)
  2. Release cable adjusting nut from abutment bracket. (Scheme 8) Hold throttle cam in fully closed position.
  3. Rotate adjusting nut until all slack is taken out of inner cable and nut is in contact with rear face of abutment bracket. Ensure throttle does not open. (Scheme 9)
  4. Fit throttle cable adjusting nut in abutment bracket. Operate throttle pedal and ensure that full throttle pedal movement is available. Fit engine acoustic cover.
