RIDING HEIGHT CHECK

Note. Prior to performing wheel alignment, perform preliminary visual and mechanical inspection of wheels, tires and suspension components.

Before adjusting alignment, check vehicle riding height. Riding height must be checked with vehicle on level floor and tires properly inflated. Refer to identification label located in driver's door jamb for proper tire size and inflation pressure. Bounce vehicle several times and allow suspension to settle.

Visually inspect vehicle for signs of abnormal height from front-to-rear and side-to-side. Remove heavy items from passenger and luggage compartments. If riding height is not within specifications or is significantly different from side-to-side, repair or replace suspension components as necessary. See RIDING HEIGHT SPECIFICATIONS table.

JACKING & HOISTING

CAUTIONManufacturer does not recommend use of single or 2-post hoists with 4 adjustable support arms. The manufacturer does not consider these hoist designs safe for lifting Land Rover vehicles. Vehicle can only be raised and supported by axles or chassis. DO NOT position jack or safety stands under any part of the body or bumpers, radius arms, steering linkage, anti-sway bar, torsion rod, rear trailing links, or any engine or drive train component. Always check vehicle stability before beginning repairs.

Note. Before lifting vehicle, ensure that the air suspension system is set to standard or high position and disabled (remove key from ignition switch, and open and close any door).

FLOOR JACK

When using a floor jack to raise vehicle, minimum capacity of floor jack must be at least 3300 lbs. When raising vehicle, position floor jack cup on differential housing of front or rear axle. Support vehicle with safety stands positioned on axle housing tube, under spring mount, next to shock mount.

HOIST

Manufacturer recommends using a drive-on type hoist which supports vehicle on drive wheels. If necessary to support vehicle in a wheel-free condition, use a drive-on hoist with wheel-free support system positioned under axle housings. (Scheme 1)

WHEEL ALIGNMENT PROCEDURES

The following is the only wheel alignment equipment which has been approved.

  1. Beissbarth ML 4600 wheel alignment computer (6 sensor).
  2. Beissbarth ML 4600-8 wheel alignment computer (8 sensor).
  3. Beissbarth ML 4000 wheel alignment computer (8 sensor wireless).
  4. Hunter S411-14.

CHECK

  1. Ensure tire pressures are correct and vehicle is at curbside weight.
  2. Roll vehicle backwards and forwards to relieve stresses in steering and suspension.
  3. Ensure road wheels are positioned straight ahead.
  4. Ensure that wheel alignment equipment is properly calibrated.
  5. Following the equipment manufacturer's instructions, measure the front wheel alignment. (Scheme 4)
  6. If specifications do not match, adjust as necessary. See «TOE ADJUSTMENT»(/land-rover/discovery/l318-2002-2004/remont/wheel-alignment/#wheel-alignment-specifications-procedures__toe-adjustment).

CENTERING STEERING WHEEL

  1. Raise and support vehicle. See «JACKING & HOISTING»(/land-rover/discovery/l318-2002-2004/remont/wheel-alignment/#wheel-alignment-specifications-procedures__jacking-hoisting). Position wheels straight ahead. Using a Ball Joint Separator (LRT-57-036), disconnect drag link at pitman arm. Fit bolt into steering box centering hole to keep steering gear centered. (Scheme 2)
  2. Ensure wheels are straight ahead. Loosen drag link clamp bolts. Adjust drag line so that taper joint is centered in pitman arm. Tighten drag link clamp 8 mm bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 N.m) and 10 mm bolts to 24 ft. lbs. (33 N.m). Reconnect drag link to pitman arm. Tighten drag link nut to 59 ft. lbs. (80 N.m).
  3. Remove steering box centering bolt. Road test vehicle. If steering wheel is not centered during road test, loosen drag link adjuster clamps bolts and adjust length of drag link to bring steering wheel to center position. Tighten drag link clamp 8 mm bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 N.m) and 10 mm bolts to 24 ft. lbs. (33 N.m). Test drive vehicle and recheck.

STEERING LOCK-TO-LOCK ADJUSTMENT

Procedure not available from manufacturer.

TOE ADJUSTMENT

  1. Roll vehicle backwards and forwards to settle linkage. Install alignment equipment according to manufacturer's instructions. Check toe adjustment. See «WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS»(/land-rover/discovery/l318-2002-2004/remont/wheel-alignment/#wheel-alignment-specifications-procedures) . If toe adjustment is not within specification, go to next step. If toe adjustment is within specification, ensure track rod clamp 8 mm bolts are tightened to 16 ft. lbs. (22 N.m) and 10 mm bolts are tightened to 24 ft. lbs. (33 N.m).
  2. Loosen clamp bolts at both ends of track rod. Rotate track rod to increase or decrease toe adjustment. Tighten track rod clamp 8 mm bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 N.m) and 10 mm bolts to 24 ft. lbs. (33 N.m). Recheck front wheel alignment.
