AXLE RATIO SPECIFICATION
General
The front axle consists of an axle housing with a differential assembly attached to the right of the vehicle center line. A wheel hub is installed in a steering knuckle at each end of the axle housing and connected to the differential assembly by a axle shaft. (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 2).
Scheme 1
Scheme 2
Axle Housing
The axle housing is of welded construction, with brackets on the housing exterior for attachment to the front suspension. Yokes at each end of the housing incorporate upper and lower ball joints for attachment of the steering knuckles. A differential cover on the front of the axle housing contains an oil level plug for checking and replenishment of the differential lubricating oil. A magnetic drain plug is installed on the underside of the housing. An oil seal is installed in each end of the axle housing to prevent leakage past the axle shafts. The interior of the axle housing is ventilated through a breather tube inserted in a Red plastic sleeve in the top of the housing. The open end of the breather tube is located in the left rear corner of the engine compartment.
Differential Assembly
The differential assembly is of the spiral bevel type, lubricated by splash oil. The assembly consists of a differential carrier attached to a pinion housing. In the pinion housing, the pinion is splined to a drive flange which is secured with a bolt and washer. An oil seal prevents leakage past the drive flange.
Axle Shaft
Each axle shaft consists of a solid rod, splined at both ends, with a constant velocity joint installed on the outboard end. (Scheme 2) A shield is incorporated onto each rod to protect the oil seals in the axle housing. The constant velocity joint is of the ball and socket type. A shaft on the constant velocity joint is splined to the hub flange. The constant velocity joint is pre-packed with grease and protected by a gaiter. There are 2 securing bands used to retain the gaiter in position.
Steering Knuckle
The steering knuckles are mounted on upper and lower ball joints in yokes at the end of the axle housing. A tension collet, in the lower mounting point of each steering knuckle, accommodates manufacturing tolerances to enable the correct tightening of both ball joints. Lugs are incorporated on the steering knuckles for attachment of the steering system drag link and track rod.
Wheel Hub
Each wheel hub consists of a hub flange pressed into a hub bearing. The hub flange is splined to accept the constant velocity joint of the axle shaft, which is secured to the hub flange with a stake nut. (Scheme 2) There are 5 studs installed in the hub flange for the wheel nuts and a threaded hole is provided for the brake disc securing screw. The outer race of the hub bearing is bolted to the steering knuckle. The hub bearing is a sealed unit which contains twin opposed roller bearings, pre-packed with grease during manufacture. A toothed ABS sensor ring is integrated into the inner race of the hub bearing. An opening in the outer race of the hub bearing accommodates the ABS sensor.
The rear axle consists of an axle housing with a differential assembly attached to the right of the vehicle center line. A wheel hub is installed in each end of the axle housing and connected to the differential assembly by a axle shaft. (Scheme 3)and (Scheme 4).
Scheme 3
Scheme 4
The axle housing is of welded construction, with brackets on the housing exterior for attachment to the rear suspension. A differential cover on the rear of the axle housing contains an oil level plug for checking and replenishment of the differential assembly lubricating oil. A magnetic drain plug is installed on the underside of the axle housing. The interior of the axle housing is ventilated through a breather tube inserted in a Red plastic sleeve in the top of the housing. The open end of the breather tube is located between the chassis and the left rear wheel arch.
The differential assembly is of the spiral bevel type, lubricated by splash oil. The assembly consists of a differential carrier attached to a pinion housing. In the pinion housing, the pinion is splined to a pinion flange which is secured with a bolt and washer. An oil seal prevents leakage past the pinion flange.
Centralizing Peg
The centralizing peg is a press-fit in the center of the pinion flange and provides a positive location for the rear drive shaft to ensure it is centralized with the flange.
Each wheel hub consists of a hub flange pressed into a hub bearing. The hub flange is splined to accept the outboard end of the axle shaft (or drive shaft), which is secured to the hub flange with a stake nut. (Scheme 4) There are 5 studs installed in the hub flange for the wheel nuts, and a threaded hole is provided for the brake disc securing screw. The outer race of the hub bearing is bolted to the end of the axle housing. An "O" ring seals the joint between the outer race and the axle housing to prevent leakage of differential lubricating oil. The hub bearing is a sealed unit which contains twin opposed roller bearings, pre-packed with grease during manufacture. A toothed ABS sensor ring is integrated into the inner race of the hub bearing. An opening in the outer race of the hub bearing accommodates the ABS sensor.
Each axle shaft consists of a solid rod, splined at both ends.

- Using an Inch-Pounds torque wrench, rotate pinion several times to settle bearings. (Scheme 33) During pinion rotation, check and record pinion Torque-To-Turn. Pinion Torque-To-Turn should be 36-54 INCH lbs. (4-6 N.m). Adjust size of tail bearing shim to obtain correct pinion Torque-To-Turn. A shim thickness change of 0.001" (0.025 mm) will change pinion Torque-To-Turn approximately 8.8 INCH lbs. (1.0 N.m).
- Position adapter LRT-51-018-7 on surface plate, establish zero and reference Dial Test Indicator (DTI). Ensure pinion height setting block, setting gauge and mating faces are clean and free from burrs. Locate Setting Block LRT-51-018-11 over pinion head and ensure it is fully seated in position. (Scheme 34)and (Scheme 35).
- Pinion height setting procedure: "A" Nominal pinion height setting is 2.929" (74.390 mm). "B" Setting block height (found on side of setting block). "C" Head height setting. "A" - "B" = "C" Subtract nominal pinion height "A" from setting block height "B" (found on side of setting block). Example 2.929" - 2.879" = 0.0496" (74.390 - 73.130 = 1.26 mm). Therefore pinion head height reading would be 0.048-0.050" (1.235-1.285 mm). Align Setting Gauge LRT-51-018-7 to setting block, rock gauge to obtain minimum reading. (Scheme 36) If reading is lower than required reading, decrease shim size. If reading is higher than required reading, increase shim size.

- Install adjusting nuts and tighten crown wheel side nut to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/land-rover/discovery/l318-2002-2004/remont/differentials-drive-axles/#drive-axles__torque-specifications). Ensure opposing nut is loose. Position DTI to check crown wheel backlash. Adjust opposing nut to obtain correct crown wheel backlash.
- Rotate pinion in both directions to settle bearings. Measure in 3 places to obtain correct crown wheel backlash. (Scheme 38)
- Align adjusting nuts to next roll pin slot. DO NOT loosen nuts to align slots. Tighten bearing cap bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/land-rover/discovery/l318-2002-2004/remont/differentials-drive-axles/#drive-axles__torque-specifications). Secure adjusting nuts with NEW roll pins.
- Apply Prussian Blue to crown wheel teeth to check tooth contact. (Scheme 39) Rotate pinion several times to obtain full tooth contact. "A" Normal pattern, drive pattern should be centered on gear teeth. Coast pattern should be centered on gear teeth but may be towards the toe. There should be some clearance between the pattern and the top of gear teeth. "B" Backlash correct, thinner pinion shim required. "C" Backlash correct, thicker pinion shim required. "D" Pinion shim correct, decrease backlash. "E" Pinion shim correct, increase backlash. Install differential assembly. See «DIFFERENTIAL ASSEMBLY - FRONT»(/land-rover/discovery/l318-2002-2004/remont/differentials-drive-axles/#drive-axles) and «DIFFERENTIAL ASSEMBLY - REAR»(/land-rover/discovery/l318-2002-2004/remont/differentials-drive-axles/#drive-axles).
