INTRODUCTION

Use this article to quickly find specifications related to servicing and on-vehicle adjustments. This is a quick-reference article to use when you are familiar with an adjustment procedure and only need a specification.
CAPACITIES
Note. On Freelander, the Intermediate Reduction Drive (IRD) is used in place of a conventional transfer case. The IRD is attached to the automatic transmission. The IRD includes a differential unit to control the proportion of torque delivered to each front wheel. The differential operates in combination with the viscous coupling giving the vehicle a self-sensing 4-wheel system. The IRD has 4 internal seals to keep IRD fluids from mixing with gearbox lubricating fluids.
Note. On Discovery, the power steering system and Active Cornering Enhancement (ACE) share one fluid reservoir. The fluid reservoir has separate and independent reservoir areas for power steering system and ACE. Each system has its own filling cap. Fluid specification for both systems is Texaco Cold Climate Power Assisted Steering (PAS) fluid 14315 (GM Part No. 12345866 or 12345867). Fluid may be Amber in color.

DRIVE BELT INSPECTION
Note. All models are equipped with automatic belt tensioner. Belt tension adjustment is not required. If belt is removed and reinstalled, ensure direction of belt rotation is not changed. Replace belt if belt tensioner indicator reaches end of slot.
ENGINE COMPRESSION
Check engine compression at normal operating temperature with all spark plugs removed. To prevent damage to catalytic converter, make tests quickly and only when necessary.
Note. Compression specifications are not supplied by manufacturer. Difference between cylinders must not exceed 25 percent.
VALVE CLEARANCE
Note. All models are equipped with hydraulic lifters. No adjustments are required.
IGNITION SYSTEM
Note. On Freelander, left (front) cylinders have spark plug wires. On right (rear) cylinders, ignition coils are mounted directly onto spark plugs.

IGNITION TIMING
On Discovery and Range Rover, ignition timing is controlled by Bosch Motronic M5.2.1 engine management system through the ECM and is not adjustable.

IDLE SPEED & MIXTURE
Note. Before checking idle speed and mixture ensure air and fuel filters are okay. Check vacuum pipes and hoses for correct routing, leaks and/or restriction. Check ignition system for poor connections or loose wires. Perform repairs as necessary.
Base Idle Speed
Base idle speed is not adjustable. If base idle speed is suspected of being out of specification, verify throttle cable adjustment. See CABLE ADJUSTMENT in ON-VEHICLE ADJUSTMENTS article. IDLE SPEED SPECIFICATIONS
Idle Mixture
Note. On Discovery and Range Rover, idle mixture is controlled by Bosch Motronic 5.2.1 engine management system through the ECM. On Freelander, idle mixture is controlled by Siemens MS43 engine management system through the ECM. On all models, mixture is not adjustable, but should be checked as part of normal tune-up procedure using an exhaust gas analyzer. If mixture is not within specifications, see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article. Always refer to SERVICE INFORMATION underhood label in engine compartment. If underhood label and specifications differ, always use underhood label specifications.
