STARTER CIRCUIT
The starting system includes the battery, starter motor, solenoid switch, ignition switch, inhibitor switch (A/T only), connection wires and the battery cables. Battery voltage is applied to terminal "B" of starter solenoid at all times. see scheme 2 When the ignition is turned to START position, battery voltage is sent through either a clutch pedal position switch (M/T) or transmission range switch (A/T) to terminal "S" of starter solenoid. This energizes the solenoid, applying voltage to starter motor, engaging starter drive gear to flywheel and cranking engine.
Models equipped with DOHC and A/T use a gear reduction starter. All other models use a conventional starter.
PINION GAP
Note. To prevent coil from burning. DO NOT apply voltage to starter assembly for no more than 10 seconds.
- With starter on a bench, disconnect the field coil wire from the "M" terminal of the solenoid. see scheme 2
- Connect a 12V battery between "S" terminal and "M" terminal. Pinion will eject.
- Check the gap between pinion and stopper with a feeler gauge. See «STARTER SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-153299-S25087301652003033100000). (Scheme 3)
- If pinion gap is not within specification, make adjustment by increasing or decreasing number of gaskets between solenoid and drive housing. Gap will decrease as number of gaskets is increased.

WILL NOT CRANK - STARTER MOTOR DOES NOT OPERATE
- Check if engine cranks with fully charged battery. If engine cranks with fully charged battery, then check charging system. If engine does not crank with a fully charged battery, then go to next step.
- Check if battery voltage is supplied at "B" terminal. If battery voltage is supplied at "B" terminal, then go to next step. If battery voltage is NOT supplied at "B" terminal, then check wiring harness.
- Check if battery voltage is supplied at "S" terminal with clutch pedal depressed (M/T), car in park (A/T), and ignition switch in START position. If battery voltage is supplied at "S" terminal, then replace starter unit. If battery voltage is NOT supplied at "S" terminal, then check starter clutch pedal position switch, transmission range switch (A/T), ignition switch, and wiring harness.
WILL NOT CRANK - STARTER MOTOR SPINS
Check if drive pinion is puled out while cranking. (Click heard when pulled out.) If drive pinion is pulled out while cranking, then remove starter and check flywheel ring gear teeth and starter drive pinion teeth. If drive pinion is NOT pulled out while cranking, then replace starter unit.
CRANKS SLOWLY
- Check if engine cranks normally when battery is fully charged. If engine cranks normally when battery is fully charged, then check charging system. If engine does not crank normally when fully charged, then go to next step.
- Check starter cable connection for looseness and corrosion. If starter cable connections are loose and have corrosion, then repair or replace connections. If starter cable connections are NOT loose and have no corrosion, check for seized motor armature. Repair or replace as necessary.
Brush
Measure brush length. See STARTER SPECIFICATIONS . If a brush is worn to, or beyond, wear limit, replace all brushes.
Brush Holder
Using ohmmeter, check continuity between each insulated brush and plate. (Scheme 4)If continuity exists, replace brush holder.

OVERRUNNING CLUTCH
- While holding clutch housing, rotate the pinion. Drive pinion should rotate smoothly in one direction, but should not rotate in opposite direction. (Scheme 5) If clutch does not function properly, replace overrunning clutch assembly.
- Inspect pinion for wear or burrs. If pinion is worn or burred, replace overrunning clutch assembly. If pinion is damaged, also inspect ring gear for wear or burrs.

STARTER RELAY
Remove the starter relay and check continuity between the terminals. (Scheme 6) If the continuity is not as specified, replace the relay.
