ARMATURE TEST
- Remove the starter.
- Disassemble the starter.
- Inspect the armature for wear or damage from contact with the permanent magnet. If there is wear or damage, replace the armature. (Scheme 1)
- Check the commutator surface "A". (Scheme 2) If surface "A" is dirty or burnt, resurface with emery cloth or a lathe, If surface "B" is dirty or burnt, recondition with #500 or #600 sandpaper.
- Check the commutator diameter. (Scheme 3) See «STARTER SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-272907-S40814837362007112900000). If the diameter is below the service limit, replace the armature.
- Measure the commutator runout. (Scheme 4) See «STARTER SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-272907-S40814837362007112900000). If the commutator runout is within the service limit, check the commutator for carbon dust or brass chips between the segments. If the commutator run out is not within the service limit, replace the armature.
- Check the mica depth "A". (Scheme 5) See «STARTER SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-272907-S40814837362007112900000). If the mica "B" is too high, undercut the mica with a hacksaw blade to the proper depth. Cut away all the mica "C" between commutator segments. The undercut should not be too shallow, too narrow or v-shaped "D".

BRUSH HOLDER TEST
- Check that there is no continuity between the (+) brush holder "A" and (-) brush holder "B". (Scheme 6) If there is no continuity, replace the brush holder assembly.
- Insert the brush "A" into the brush holder and bring the brush into contact with the commutator, then attach a spring scale "B" to the spring "C". (Scheme 7) Measure the spring tension at the moment the spring lifts off the brush. See «STARTER SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-272907-S38140485572007112900000).
- Pry back each brush spring "A" with a screwdriver, then position the brush "B" about halfway out of its holder and release the spring to hold it there. (Scheme 8)
- Install the armature in the housing and install the brush holder. Next, pry back each brush spring again and push the brush down until it seats against the commutator, then release the spring against the end of the brush. (Scheme 9) NOTE: To seat new brushes, slip a strip of #500 or #600 sandpaper, with the grit side up, between the commutator and each brush and smoothly rotate the armature. The contact surface of the brushes will be sanded to the same contour as the commutator.

SOLENOID TEST
| CAUTION | To prevent coil from burning, DO NOT apply voltage to starter assembly for more than 10 seconds. |
- Disconnect the field coil wire from the "M" terminal of solenoid switch.
- Connect a 12V battery between "S" terminal and the starter body. (Scheme 10)
- Connect the field coil wire to the "M" terminal.
- If the pinion moves out, the pull-in coil of solenoid is working properly. If the pinion does not move, replace the solenoid.
- Disconnect the field coil wire from the "M" terminal.
- If the pinion has moved out, the hold-in coil of the solenoid is working properly. If the pinion moves in, replace the solenoid.

FREE RUNNING TEST
- Place the starter motor in a vise equipped with soft jaws and connect a fully-charged 12-volt battery to starter motor.
- Connect a test ammeter (100-ampere scale) and carbon pile rheostat. see scheme 12
- Connect a voltmeter (15-volt scale) across starter motor.
- Rotate carbon pile to OFF position.
- Connect the battery cable from battery's negative post to the starter motor body.
- Adjust until battery voltage shown on the voltmeter reads 11 volt.
- Confirm that amperage is 90 amps or less at 2800 RPM and that starter motor turns smoothly and freely.
