TROUBLE SHOOTING

Scheme 1
Scheme 1: BRUSH HOLDER TEST
- Using ohmmeter, check continuity between each insulated brush and plate. (Scheme 1)
- Replace brush holder if there is continuity.
MAGNETIC SWITCH PULL-IN TEST
| CAUTION | To prevent coil from burning, DO NOT apply voltage to starter assembly for more than 10 seconds. |
- Disconnect the field coil wire from the "M" terminal of the magnetic switch.
- Connect a 12V battery between the "S" terminal and the "M" terminal. see scheme 1
- If the pinion moves out, then the pull-in coil is good. If it doesn't move out, replace the magnetic switch.
MAGNETIC SWITCH HOLD-IN TEST
| CAUTION | To prevent coil from burning, DO NOT apply voltage to starter assembly for more than 10 seconds. |
- Disconnect the field coil wire from the "M" terminal of the magnetic switch.
- Connect a 12V battery between "S" terminal and the body.
- If the pinion moves out, everything is in order. If the pinion moves back and forth repeatedly, the hold-in circuit is open. Then replace the magnetic switch.
FREE RUNNING TEST
- Place the starter motor in a vise equipped with soft jaws and connect a fully-charged 12 volt battery to starter motor.
- Connect a test ammeter (100-ampere scale) and carbon pile rheostat. (Scheme 2)
- Connect a voltmeter (15-volt scale) across starter motor.
- Rotate carbon pile to the off position.
- Connect the battery cable from battery's negative post to the starter motor body.
- Adjust until battery voltage shown on the voltmeter reads 11 volts.
- Confirm that amperage is 90 amps or less at 2800 RPM or less, and that starter motor turns smoothly and freely.
Scheme 2
MAGNETIC SWITCH RETURN TEST
| CAUTION | To prevent coil from burning, DO NOT apply voltage to starter assembly for more than 10 seconds. |
- Disconnect field coil wire from the "M" terminal of the magnetic switch.
- Connect a 12-volt battery between "M" terminal and the body.
- Pull pinion out and release. If pinion returns quickly to its original position, everything is in order. If it doesn't, replace the magnetic switch.
