REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
| WARNING | To avoid injury from accidental air bag deployment, read and carefully follow all SERVICE PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM procedures in AIR BAG SYSTEM SAFETY article in GENERAL SERVICING. |
Remove glove box. Disconnect wiring harness from blower motor. Remove 3 nuts, bolt, and blower motor assembly. Remove blower motor. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten mounting bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove ashtray. Position A/T shift lever in No. 1 position (if equipped). Disconnect cigarette lighter connector. Remove center panel trim from instrument panel. Remove 2 instrument cluster trim screws, located above instrument cluster, and remove instrument cluster trim.
- Remove climate control panel and disconnect electrical connectors from rear of control panel. Remove glove box. Disconnect temperature and mode control cables from heater unit. Remove climate control panel. To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure control cables and levers operate freely and to their full stroke.
Drain engine coolant. Remove instrument panel. See INSTRUMENT PANEL . Detach control cable from heater unit. Disconnect heater hoses from heater core. Remove 3 nuts, bolt, and blower motor assembly. Remove heater unit. Remove heater core tube mounting bracket. Remove heater core. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Removal
- Disable air bag system. See AIR BAG SYSTEM SAFETY article in GENERAL SERVICING. Remove knob from shifter lever. Ensure front wheels are positioned in a straight-ahead position. Turn ignition switch to lock position and disconnect negative battery cable. Remove ashtray. Position A/T shift lever in No. 1 position (if equipped). Disconnect cigarette lighter connector.
- Remove center panel trim from instrument panel. (Scheme 2) Remove 2 instrument cluster trim screws, located above instrument cluster, and remove instrument cluster trim. Remove climate control panel and disconnect electrical connectors from rear of control panel. Remove glove box and side cover. Disconnect temperature and mode control cables from heater unit. Remove center console.
- Remove 4 driver-side air bag module mounting bolts. Remove air bag enough to gain access to horn switch Orange connector and air bag Blue connector. Disconnect horn switch connector, air bag connector, then remove air bag. Remove steering wheel nut and place a match mark on steering wheel and steering shaft. Remove steering wheel. Remove 3 clockspring screws and clockspring. Use tape to ensure clockspring does not rotate.
- Remove steering column upper and lower covers, and combination switch. Remove hood release handle. Remove driver-side lower instrument panel cover. (Scheme 2) Remove 2 bolts from "T" bar and 2 bolts from left side of instrument panel.
- Remove 4 passenger-side air bag module mounting bolts and remove module. Remove 2 bolts on right side of "T" bar. Remove 2 bolts at right side of instrument panel. Remove steering column bolts and lower steering column. Disconnect electrical connectors between instrument panel and firewall. Remove instrument panel.
Installation
To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure wiring harnesses are not pinched during installation. Ensure cables operate freely and to their full stroke. Tighten mounting bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
