Removal

CAUTIONDo not use a screwdriver or similar tool to pry piston from rotor.
  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheel and tire assembly. Remove 2 bolts and remove caliper. (Scheme 1) Remove brake pads and guide plate. Measure brake pad lining thickness and compare with specification. See «DISC BRAKE SPECIFICATION»(ref-162294-S36666360592004052400000). Replace pads if lining thickness is less than specification. Go to next step.
  2. Prepare to catch any brake fluid. Using flare nut wrench, disconnect brake hose. Remove 2 bolts and supporting plate. Measure rotor thickness in 4 places. Compare rotor thickness to specification. See «DISC BRAKE SPECIFICATION»(ref-162294-S36666360592004052400000). Replace rotor if thickness is less than specification. To remove rotor, see «FRONT BRAKE ROTOR»(ref-162294-S33388919222004052400000).

Installation

CAUTIONEnsure no wheel bearing looseness is detected.

To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts and nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Bleed brake system. See BLEEDING BRAKE SYSTEM . Inspect brake system for leaks.

Removal & Installation

  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheels. Remove brake caliper. See «FRONT DISC BRAKE PADS & CALIPER»(ref-162294-S04234378442004052400000) .
  2. Prior to removing front disc brake rotor, use a micrometer to measure brake rotor thickness in 4 places. Using a dial indicator, measure brake rotor runout. Compare measurements to specifications. See «DISC BRAKE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-162294-S36666360592004052400000) . Resurface or replace disc brake rotor as necessary.
  3. Using an impact driver, remove 2 disc brake rotor mounting screws. Remove rotor. To install, reverse removal procedure.
  1. Raise and support vehicle after releasing parking brake. Remove wheel and tire. Remove hub cap.
  2. Use a small chisel to raise staked edge of lock nut. Remove drum, washer and bearings as an assembly from spindle.
  3. Remove brake shoe hold down springs and pins. (Scheme 2) Remove brake shoe assembly. Remove parking brake cable from brake shoe assembly.
  4. Remove wheel cylinder brakeline. Remove wheel cylinder attaching bolt. Remove anti-rattle spring from brake shoe assembly. Remove operating lever after removing return spring. Remove parking brake operating lever retainer.

To install, reverse removal procedure. Coat all internal parts of wheel cylinders with clean brake fluid. Apply brake grease onto wheel cylinder and anchor sliding points, adjuster threads and shoe contact points on backing plate. Adjust brake shoes. Tighten bolts and nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Bleed brake system. See BLEEDING BRAKE SYSTEM . Inspect brake system for leaks.

  1. Disconnect low fluid level switch wiring connector.
  2. Disconnect brakelines from master cylinder and ABS control unit by using Flare Nut Wrench (0K130-430-019). Cap tubes and plug master cylinder ports and ABS control unit ports to prevent entry of contaminants.
  3. Remove 2 master cylinder attaching nuts and washers. see scheme 9 Remove master cylinder from mounting studs on brake booster.
  1. Position master cylinder onto brake booster. Check push rod length. Install master cylinder attaching washers and nuts. Tighten master cylinder nuts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-162294-S28263525742004052400000) .
  2. Tighten brakeline flare nuts with flare nut wrench. Connect low fluid level switch wiring. Bleed brakes. See «BLEEDING BRAKE SYSTEM»(ref-162294-S39646867562004052400000) .

Using Flare Nut Wrench (0K130-430-019), remove the brakelines. Remove mounting bolt. Remove proportioning valve. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten mounting bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . After installation, add brake fluid as necessary and bleed air from system. See BLEEDING BRAKE SYSTEM . Check for the fluid leaks.
