Warranty information and specifications for fluid
capacities, lubrication specifications, wheel and tire size
and battery type are covered in this article.
VIN CODE LOCATION
The vehicle identification number (VIN) is stamped into a metal plate on left side at the base of the windshield. The code characters of the VIN identify and describe the vehicle. The SSR & O Number identifies vehicles built to special order.

SEVERE & NORMAL SERVICE DEFINITIONS
Note. Use the Severe Service schedule if the vehicle to be serviced is operated under ANY (one or more) of these conditions
Service is recommended at mileage intervals based on vehicle operation. Service schedules are based on the following primary operating conditions
Severe Service
- Short Trips (About 10 Miles) In Freezing Temperatures
- Towing Or Heavily Loaded
- Severe Dust Conditions
- Hot Weather, Stop-And-Go Driving
- Extensive Idling Conditions (Taxi Or Delivery Type Service)

SEVERE SERVICE MAINTENANCE
Oil & Filter Change - Every 3 months or 3750 miles.
SERVICE LABOR TIMES

TIRE REPLACEMENT
| CAUTION | Always ensure all 4 tires on the vehicle are the same size, except when using the temporary spare. The use of mismatched tires may cause unpredictable handling. Replacing original tires with tires of a different size may result in false speedometer and odometer indications. |
TIRE INFLATION
The tire inflation specification decal is located in the glove box.
WHEEL TIGHTENING
Tighten lug nuts securely in crisscross pattern. Tighten lug nuts on Grand Wagoneer and "J" Series Truck (except 8400 lbs. GVW) to 75 ft. lbs. (102 N.m) On "J" Series Trucks with a GVW in excess of 8400 lbs., tighten lug nuts to 130 ft. lbs. (176 N.m)
BATTERY SPECIFICATIONS
| CAUTION | When battery is disconnected, vehicles equipped with computers may lose memory data. When battery power is restored, driveability problems may exist on some vehicles. These vehicles may require a relearn procedure. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in the GENERAL INFORMATION section. |
Grand Wagoneer and J10/J20 Truck model batteries require inspection of the electrolyte level only at the beginning of each winter season and every 15,000 miles. In addition to the standard equipment 421 cold crank amps battery, a 452 cold crank amps battery is optionally available for vehicles equipped with heavy-duty equipment.
Note. A battery with a rating of 440 cold crank amps with 135-minute reserve capacity is optionally available for fleet vehicles.
REPLACING BLOWN FUSES
Before replacing a blown fuse, remove ignition key, turn off all lights and accessories to avoid damaging the electrical system. Be sure to use fuse with the correct indicated amperage rating. The use of an incorrect amperage rating fuse may result in a dangerous electrical system overload.
BATTERY WARNING

BRAKE PAD WEAR INDICATOR
Indicator will cause a squealing or scraping noise, warning that brake pads need replacement.
ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE SENSITIVE (ESD) PARTS
| WARNING | Many solid state electrical components can be damaged by static electricity (ESD). Some will display a warning label, but many will not. Discharge personal static electricity by touching a metal ground point on the vehicle prior to servicing any ESD sensitive component. |
ENGINE OIL
| CAUTION | Never use non-detergent or straight mineral oil. |
| CAUTION | Do not use reclaimed fluid, mineral oil, fluid that was stored in old or open containers, or fluid inferior to AMC Standard AM 4101. Be sure to handle the fluid in clean containers that will not introduce even a slight amount of foreign liquids or particles. Such contamination of fluid could lead to hydraulic system failure. |
ENGINE OIL FILTER
| CAUTION | Verify that proper Oil Filter is being used. Filters with metric threads (M20 x 1.5) must be used with some engines. Other engines use SAE type (3/4" x 16) threads, and must use an oil filter with these threads. Possible engine damage can occur with improper oil filter. |
FUEL SYSTEM SERVICE
| WARNING | DO NOT bleed fuel lines on hot engine, as high exhaust temperatures could cause fire. Use care when bleeding fuel lines, as fuel is under extreme pressure and could penetrate skin, causing personal injury. Wear safety goggles and protective clothing when bleeding fuel lines. |
| WARNING | Relieve fuel system pressure prior to servicing any fuel system component. |
HALOGEN BULBS
Halogen bulbs contain pressurized gas which may explode if overheated. DO NOT touch glass portion of bulb with bare hands. Eye protection should be worn when handling or working around halogen bulbs.
RADIATOR CAP
| CAUTION | Always disconnect the fan motor when working near the radiator fan. The fan is temperature controlled and could start at any time even when the ignition key is in the OFF position. DO NOT loosen or remove radiator cap when cooling system is hot. |
SELEC-TRAC SYSTEM
| CAUTION | Never attempt to engage LO range when vehicle is in 2WD, or when vehicle is moving faster than 2-3 MPH. Transfer case damage may result. |
BRAKE WARNING LIGHT
| CAUTION | If the parking brake is released and the BRAKE warning light glows while the ignition is on or engine is running, there may be a problem in the brake hydraulic system. Brake pedal travel, effort and stopping distances may increase. |
4WD OPERATION
| CAUTION | Never operate vehicles with a Model 208 transfer case in 4WD on dry, hard-surfaced roads for a sustained period, and use 4LO only when needed for added pulling power. Using 4WD on such roads will cause stress and possible damage to components, as well as make shifting difficult. To reduce shifting effort, drive the vehicle in reverse for a few feet, or drive off the hard surface road momentarily to allow tire slippage. |
TRANSFER CASE
| CAUTION | Both drive axles are disengaged when transmission gear is in Neutral position. Always set parking brake when leaving vehicle unattended. |
| CAUTION | Never attempt to engage Low range when vehicle is moving faster than 2-3 MPH (3-5 KM/H). Transfer case damage may result. |
GASOLINES CONTAINING ALCOHOL
| CAUTION | Exclusive use of gasohol is not recommended. Vehicle test results have shown that significant fuel system corrosion can result when gasohol is used exclusively. Fuel additives which are now being sold as octane enhancers are not recommended. Most of these products contain high concentrations of methanol. |
AFTERMARKET WHEELS & TIRES
| CAUTION | Replacing original tires with tires of a different diameter result in false speedometer and odometer readings. |

| CAUTION | Always refer to customer's copy of warranty information for specific model application and/or coverage limitations. |
12-MONTH/12,000-MILE WARRANTY
The manufacturer warrants to the original purchaser that the vehicle is free from defects under normal use and service for 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first.
Powertrain Protection Limited Warranty-Begins at 12 months or 12,000 miles and lasts for 2 years or 24,000 miles, whichever comes first. It covers Engine, Transmission, Transfer Case, and Front or Rear Wheel Drive.
Items not covered include: normally scheduled maintenance, tune-ups, clutch adjustments, lack of proper maintenance, and any vehicle on which the mileage cannot readily be determined. Warranty does not cover first 100.00 of each repair service.
EMISSION PERFORMANCE WARRANTY
Warranty begins at warranty start date and lasts for 5 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. It applies only in states that require EPA emission performance testing.
Coverage is limited to fewer components after 2 years or 24,000 miles. Coverage includes Fuel Metering System, Ignition Spark Advance/Retard System, Evaporative Emission Control System, Evaporative Emission Control System, Positive Crank Ventilation System, Exhaust Gas Recirculation System, Air Injection System, Catalyst System, Electronic Engine Controls, and miscellaneous items such as hoses, clamps, brackets, pipes, gaskets, belts, seals and connectors used in the above systems.
EMISSIONS CONTROL SYSTEMS WARRANTY
This portion of the warranty specifically applies to parts inherent to the Emission Control System (any vehicle component that affects emissions).
PERFORATION FROM CORROSION LIMITED WARRANTY
To obtain this warranty, immediately contact the authorized Jeep dealer who will arrange to have your vehicle inspected.
This warranty is automatically transferred to subsequent owners. New Jeep vehicles have been factory rust-protected. No additional rust protection is required to keep this warranty in force.
ELECTRICAL FAILURE
If an electrical device stops working, ensure ignition switch and control switch are in the ON positions. If the component still does not operate, check the fuse that protects the circuit.
