INSTALLATION
- Align and install column into the steering coupler.
- Install column harness and connect harness to switches.
- Reroute the shifter interlock cable through the tie straps.
- Install the column onto the mounting studs.
- Install the two mounting nuts and the two mounting bolts all finger tight.
- Tighten the lower mounting nuts to 17 N.m (150 in. lbs.).
- Tighten the upper mounting nuts to 17 N.m (150 in. lbs.).
- Install the steering column coupler bolt and tighten to 49 N.m (36 ft. lbs.).
- Reconnect the shifter interlock cable.
- Center the clock spring (if necessary) and install it on the column. See «AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS»(ref-170455) article.
- Snap together the column shrouds and install the mounting screws.
- Install the knee blocker and the knee blocker cover. See «KNEE BLOCKER»(ref-174913-S27014850212005041300000) .
- Be certain that the steering wheel mounting bolt is tightened to the proper torque specification to ensure proper clockspring operation. Install the steering wheel and tighten bolt to 54 N.m (40 ft. lbs.). See «STEERING WHEEL»(ref-174913-S00681170782005041200000) .
- Install the airbag. See «AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS»(ref-170455) article.
- Install the negative battery terminal.

- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Remove knee blocker cover and knee blocker. See «KNEE BLOCKER»(ref-174913-S27014850212005041300000).
- Lock the steering wheel with the tires in the straight ahead position.
- Remove the lower column pinch bolt.
- Lower the steering coupler shaft from the column.
- Remove the intermediate shaft seal by pushing in the four tangs securing it to the panel. (Scheme 9)
- Remove the center support bearing bracket from the mount on the shock tower.
- Remove the lower coupler pinch bolt at the steering gear. (Scheme 9)
- Remove the coupler at the steering gear. (Scheme 9)
- Remove the intermediate shaft from the vehicle. (Scheme 9)
- Remove the center support bracket from the steering shaft (if replacing the intermediate shaft).
- Install the center support bearing bracket to the steering shaft (if removed) Tighten to 14 N.m (125 in.lbs.).
- Install the intermediate shaft to the vehicle. (Scheme 9)
- Install the coupler at the steering gear. (Scheme 9)
- Install the lower coupler pinch bolt at the steering gear and tighten the bolt to 49 N.m (36 ft. lbs.). (Scheme 9)
- Install the center support bearing bracket to the mounting holes on the shock tower.
- Install the intermediate shaft seal by pushing it in securing the four tangs to the panel. (Scheme 9)
- Install the steering coupler shaft to the column.
- Install the lower column pinch bolt and tighten the bolt to 49 N.m (36 ft. lbs.). (Scheme 9)
- Unlock the steering wheel.
- Install the knee blocker cover and knee blocker. See «KNEE BLOCKER»(ref-174913-S27014850212005041300000).
- Reconnect the negative battery cable.
REMOVAL
- Disable and remove the drivers side airbag. See «AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS»(ref-170455) .
- Partially remove the steering wheel bolt and leave the bolt in the column.
- Install puller C-3894-A or equivalent using the top of the bolt to push on.
- Remove the steering wheel.
Note. Do not reuse the old steering wheel bolt (a new bolt must be used)
- Install steering wheel to the column
- Install the new steering wheel bolt. Tighten the bolt to 54 N.m (40 ft. lbs.)
- Install the drivers side air bag. See «AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS»(ref-170455) .

- Reach into the steering column opening at the top of the knee blocker and and pull the top rearward to disengage upper knee blocker clips.
- Gently swing the knee blocker open.
- Slide the knee blocker toward the driver side door and disengage the hinges from the molded in hinge pins in the instrument panel.

- With the knee blocker close to a horizontal position, align both knee blocker hinges to the tabs at the bottom edge of the instrument panel.
- Engage the hinges by sliding them toward the center of the vehicle as far as they can go.
- Gently swing the knee blocker upward until the clips touch the corresponding slots in the instrument panel and engage fully.
