Charging System 11 illustrations ~625 words

Removal & Installation

  1. Remove battery.
  2. Disconnect sensor pigtail harness from engine wire harness electrical connector.
  3. Pry sensor straight up from battery tray mounting hole.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
CAUTIONDisconnect negative cable from battery before removing battery output wire from generator. Failure to do so can result in injury.

Removal

  1. Disconnect and isolate negative battery cable.
  2. Remove generator drive belt.
  3. Unsnap plastic protective cover from B+ mounting stud. (Scheme 1)
  4. Remove B+ terminal mounting nut at top of generator.
  5. Disconnect field wire electrical connector at rear of generator by pushing on connector tab.
  6. On 2.4L engine, remove 2 generator mounting bolts. (Scheme 2)
  7. On 3.7L engine, remove 1 vertical generator mounting bolt and 2 horizontal mounting bolts. (Scheme 3)
  8. On al engines, remove the generator from vehicle.

Installation

  1. On 2.4L engine, position generator to engine and install 2 mounting bolts. Tighten to 42 ft. lbs. (57 N.m).
  2. On 3.7L engine, position generator to engine and install 3 mounting bolts. Tighten 2 horizontal mounting bolts to 42 ft. lbs. (57 N.m). Tighten 1 vertical mounting bolt to 29 ft. lbs. (40 N.m).
  3. On all engines, snap field wire connector into rear of generator.
  4. Install B+ terminal and nut to generator mounting stud. Tighten to 115 INCH lbs. (13 N.m).
  5. Snap plastic protective cover to B+ terminal.
  6. Install drive belt. See «SPECIFICATIONS & DRIVE BELT ROUTING»(ref-163511) article in ENGINE COOLING.
  7. Install negative battery cable to battery.

Removal (INA)

  1. Disconnect and isolate negative battery cable.
  2. Remove generator and accessory drive belt. Refer to «GENERATOR»(ref-164631-S27424395612004081100000) for removal.
  3. Position Special Tool (8823 VM.1048) into decoupler. (Scheme 4)for tool identification. (Scheme 5)
  4. Determine if end of generator shaft is hex shaped or spline shaped. (Scheme 6)and (Scheme 7). If hex is used, insert a 10-mm deep socket into Special Tool (8823 VM. 1048). (Scheme 8) If splined, insert a 5/16" 6-point hex driver, or a 10-mm 12-point triple square driver into tool No. 8823 (VM. 1048). (Scheme 9)
  5. The generator shaft uses conventional right hand threads to attach decoupler. To break decoupler loose from generator threads, rotate end of tool clockwise.
  6. After breaking loose with tool, unthread decoupler by hand from generator.

Installation (INA)

  1. Thread decoupler pulley onto generator shaft by hand (right-hand threads).
  2. Position Special Tool (8823 VM.1048) into decoupler.
  3. Determine if end of generator shaft is hex shaped or is splined. If hex is used, insert a 10-mm deep socket into Special Tool (8823 VM.1048). If splined, insert a 5/16" 6-point hex driver, or a 10-mm 12-point triple square driver into Special Tool (8823 VM.1048).
  4. Tighten in counter-clockwise rotation. Tighten to 81 ft. lbs. (110 N.m).
  5. Install accessory drive belt, and generator. See «SPECIFICATIONS & DRIVE BELT ROUTING»(ref-163511) article in ENGINE COOLING, and «GENERATOR»(ref-164631-S27424395612004081100000) .
  6. Connect negative battery cable.

Removal (Litens)

  1. Disconnect and isolate negative battery cable.
  2. Remove generator and accessory drive belt. Refer to «GENERATOR»(ref-164631-S27424395612004081100000).
  3. Position Special Tool (8433) into decoupler. Align to hex end of generator shaft.
  4. The generator shaft uses conventional right hand threads to attach decoupler. To break decoupler loose from generator threads, rotate end of tool clockwise. (Scheme 11)
  5. After breaking loose with tool, unthread decoupler by hand from generator.

Installation (Litens)

  1. Thread decoupler pulley onto generator shaft by hand (right-hand threads).
  2. Position Special Tool (8433) into decoupler. Align tool to hex end of generator shaft.
  3. DO NOT use an adjustable, ratcheting "Click Type" torque wrench. Most "Click Type" wrenches will only allow torque to be applied in a clockwise rotation. Use a dial-type or bean type wrench. Tighten in couter-clockwise rotation. Tighten to 81 ft. lbs. (110 N.m).
  4. Install accessory drive belt, and generator. See «SPECIFICATIONS & DRIVE BELT ROUTING»(ref-163511) articl in ENGINE COOLING, and «GENERATOR»(ref-164631-S27424395612004081100000) .
  5. Connect negative battery cable.
