DESCRIPTION

Mitsubishi permanent-magnet gear reduction starter is used on all models. A planetary gear set transmits power between starter motor and pinion shaft. On 2.5L engines, 4 permanent magnets are used, eliminating potential field wire-to-frame shorts. All models use a starter relay in starter circuit between the battery and starter solenoid terminal. On M/T models, the Clutch Pedal Position (CPP) switch is in relay control power circuit between ignition switch and relay. On A/T models, the Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch or Transmission Range (TR) sensor are in relay control ground circuit between relay and ground. Starters are not interchangeable between different engine sizes.

STARTER SHIMMING (2.5L)

Starter motor shims can be added or removed to correct starter noise. Shim thickness is .015" (.381 mm). Shims may be stacked if additional thickness is necessary. Identify symptom and repair as necessary.

High Frequency Whine Before Engine Starts; Engine Starts Okay

Probable cause is excessive distance between pinion gear and flywheel/drive plate gear. To repair, move starter motor toward flywheel/drive plate by removing starter shim(s), if possible.

High Frequency Whine After Engine Starts With Ignition Key Released; Engine Starts Okay

Probable cause is insufficient distance between pinion gear and flywheel/drive plate gear. Noise may be intermittent. To repair, move starter motor away from flywheel/drive plate by adding starter shim(s). Inspect for damage, excessive wear and excessive runout. Replace flywheel/drive plate as necessary.

TROUBLE SHOOTING

Note. For additional trouble shooting, see TROUBLE SHOOTING article in GENERAL INFORMATION.

If starter does not operate, check battery condition and charge. Check fuses, wiring and connections. Check starter relay, ignition switch, Clutch Pedal Position (CPP) switch (M/T) or Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch (A/T). Check starter solenoid and starter.

If starter engages, but does not turn engine, Check battery condition and charge. Check starting circuit and starter. Check engine for seized condition.

If starter engages, but disengages before engine starts, check starter ring gear and starter motor.

If starter does not disengage, check starter installation, starter relay, ignition switch and starter motor.

ON-VEHICLE TESTING

CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.

CRANKING TEST

Note. Ensure engine is at normal operating temperature. High viscosity oil, extreme cold temperatures, or tight piston ring-to-cylinder wall clearance will increase amperage draw.

  1. Using a battery load tester, connect positive and negative leads to battery. Connect inductive ammeter pick-up to positive battery cable. Ensure all lights and accessories are off. Place A/T in Park, or M/T in Neutral. Apply parking brake. Remove Automatic Shutdown (ASD) relay from Power Distribution Center (PDC). Refer to PDC cover for relay location. PDC is located in engine compartment. On M/T models, depress clutch pedal. CAUTION: During cranking, DO NOT draw battery voltage down to less than 9.6 volts. Use care not to overheat starter.
  2. On all models, crank engine and observe voltmeter reading. If voltage drops to less than 9.6 volts, recharge and test battery. Retest voltage. If voltage remains at less than 9.6 volts, bench test starter. See «BENCH TESTING»(/jeep/grand-cherokee/wj-1998-2004/remont/starter/#starting-system) . If voltage remains more than 9.6 volts, observe amperage reading. If amperage draw is less than specified, perform circuit resistance tests. See «STARTER SPECIFICATIONS»(/jeep/grand-cherokee/wj-1998-2004/remont/starter/#starting-system__starter-specifications) . Also see «FEED CIRCUIT RESISTANCE TESTS»(/jeep/grand-cherokee/wj-1998-2004/remont/starter/#starting-system__feed-circuit-resistance-tests) .
  3. If voltage reads more than 12.5 volts, and starter does not turn, problem is in battery, starter relay, starter solenoid, ignition switch, Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch, Clutch Pedal Position (CPP) switch or wiring. Check each component until problem is found. If voltage is more than 12.5 volts and starter cranks very slowly, perform circuit resistance tests. See «FEED CIRCUIT RESISTANCE TESTS»(/jeep/grand-cherokee/wj-1998-2004/remont/starter/#starting-system__feed-circuit-resistance-tests) .

FEED CIRCUIT RESISTANCE TESTS

Note. If excessive resistance is not found in circuits being tested, remove starter and proceed to BENCH TESTING .

Note. A voltmeter accurate to one tenth of a volt will be needed for the following tests.

Ensure battery is fully charged. Ensure A/T is in Park or M/T is in Neutral and parking brake is applied. Disconnect Automatic Shutdown (ASD) relay so engine will not start. ASD relay is located in Power Distribution Center (PDC). Refer to PDC cover for proper relay location. Clutch pedal must be depressed on M/T models. Perform all listed tests in the order given.

Battery Connection Resistance Test

Connect voltmeter positive lead to negative battery cable clamp. Connect voltmeter negative lead to negative battery post. Crank engine and observe voltmeter reading. If voltage is greater than 0.2 volt, repair poor contact between cable clamp and post. Perform same procedure to positive battery post and cable clamp.

Positive Battery Cable Resistance Test

  1. Remove starter heat shield (if equipped) to gain access to starter solenoid connections. Connect voltmeter negative lead to starter solenoid battery terminal and voltmeter positive lead to positive battery post.
  2. Crank engine and observe voltmeter reading. If voltage reads more than 0.2 volt, correct poor connection between battery cable and starter solenoid or replace positive battery cable.

Ground Connection Resistance Test

Connect voltmeter negative lead to negative battery post. Connect voltmeter positive lead to engine block, near negative battery cable grounding point. Crank engine and observe voltmeter reading. If voltage is greater than 0.2 volt, repair poor ground connection or replace ground cable.

Starter Ground Connection Resistance Test

Connect voltmeter negative lead to negative battery post. Connect voltmeter positive lead to starter housing. Crank engine and observe voltmeter reading. If voltmeter reading indicates more than 0.2 volt, repair poor starter-to-ground connection.

  2. Using DVOM, measure resistance between starter relay terminals No. 85 and 86. If resistance is not 70-80 ohms, replace starter relay. If resistance is 70-80 ohms, connect a 12-volt power source to starter relay terminals No. 85 and 86. Continuity should exist between starter relay terminals No. 30 and 87. Replace starter relay if it does not test as specified. If starter relay tests as specified, go to «STARTER RELAY CIRCUIT TEST»(/jeep/grand-cherokee/wj-1998-2004/remont/starter/#starting-system__starter-relay-circuit-test).

Note. Perform SOLENOID CIRCUIT TEST under ON-VEHICLE TESTING before testing starter relay.

  1. Remove starter relay from Power Distribution Center (PDC). PDC is located in engine compartment. Refer to PDC label for starter relay identification. Using DVOM, check for continuity between starter relay terminals B1 and B2. (Scheme 3) If no continuity exists, replace starter relay. If no continuity exists, go to next step.
  2. Using DVOM, measure resistance between starter relay terminals B3 and B5. If resistance is not 70-80 ohms, replace starter relay. If resistance is 70-80 ohms, connect a 12-volt power source to starter relay terminals B3 and B5. Continuity should exist between starter relay terminals B1 and B2. Replace starter relay if it does not test as specified. If starter relay tests as specified, go to «STARTER RELAY CIRCUIT TEST»(/jeep/grand-cherokee/wj-1998-2004/remont/starter/#starting-system__starter-relay-circuit-test).

SOLENOID TEST

Remove starter. Using DVOM, check for continuity between field terminal (large terminal connected to starter body) and solenoid terminal (smallest terminal). Check for continuity between solenoid terminal and solenoid housing. Continuity should exist. If continuity does not exist in either test, solenoid has open circuit. Replace starter assembly.

Removal & Installation (2.5L)

Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect battery cable and solenoid feed wire from starter solenoid. Remove starter mounting bolts, starter and starter motor shims (if equipped). To install, reverse removal procedure.

Removal & Installation (4.0L & 4.7L)

Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect starter battery cable and solenoid feed wire. Remove starter from flywheel housing. To install, reverse removal procedure.

OVERHAUL

Note. Manufacturer does not recommend disassembling and servicing starters. If starter is found defective, a new unit must be installed.
