DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

WARNINGVehicle is equipped with Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. When servicing vehicle, use care to avoid accidental air bag deployment. SIR system-related components are located in various locations throughout interior and exterior of vehicle, depending on application. Do not use electrical test equipment on or near these circuits. If necessary, deactivate SIR system before servicing components. See AIR BAG DEACTIVATION PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION.

Shift interlock system consists of a shift interlock cable/solenoid assembly connected between ignition switch and floor shifter. (Scheme 79)and (Scheme 80). A brakelight switch and PCM sense circuits are used to control Brake Transmission Shifter Interlock (BTSI) solenoid. With ignition switch in LOCK or ACC position, gearshift lever is locked in Park. With ignition switch in RUN position, gearshift lever is released from Park when brake pedal is depressed. Depressing brake pedal energizes BTSI solenoid and allows gearshift lever to be moved to any position. Shift interlock system also prevents ignition switch from being rotated to LOCK or ACC position unless gearshift lever is returned to Park. (Scheme 81)

PRELIMINARY INSPECTION

Diagnosis of shift interlock system should begin with a general visual inspection of related components, i.e., shift linkage, electrical connections, components, etc.

SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK

  1. Ensure ignition key can only be removed from ignition switch with gearshift lever in Park.
  2. Ensure gearshift lever is in Park with push button of gearshift lever handle in released position. Ignition switch should rotate freely from OFF position to LOCK position. Ignition switch should not rotate to LOCK position with gearshift lever in any other position.
  3. Shifting from Park should be possible when ignition switch is in OFF position and brake pedal is depressed.
  4. Shifting from Park should not be possible while depressing push button of gearshift lever handle unless brake pedal is depressed with ignition switch in RUN or START position.
  5. Gearshift lever should be locked in Park when ignition switch is in ACC or LOCK positions.
  6. With ignition switch in RUN or START position, gearshift lever should be able to be moved into any position including Park without depressing brake pedal.
  7. If shift interlock system does not operate as specified, verify proper gearshift cable and shift interlock cable adjustments. See «ADJUSTMENTS»(/jeep/grand-cherokee/wj-1998-2004/remont/automatic-trans/#shift-interlock-systems__adjustments) . If adjustments are okay, check shift interlock system circuit. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(/jeep/grand-cherokee/wj-1998-2004/remont/automatic-trans/#shift-interlock-systems) .

ADJUSTMENTS

WARNINGVehicle is equipped with Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. When servicing vehicle, use care to avoid accidental air bag deployment. SIR system-related components are located in various locations throughout interior and exterior of vehicle, depending on application. Do not use electrical test equipment on or near these circuits. If necessary, deactivate SIR system before servicing components. See AIR BAG DEACTIVATION PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION.

Note. Gearshift cable and shift interlock cable should both be adjusted to ensure proper shift interlock system operation.

Cherokee & Wrangler

  1. With transmission in Park and engine off, raise vehicle on hoist. Using screwdriver, unlock gearshift cable by releasing cable adjuster clamp. (Scheme 82) Remove cable from mounting bracket. Slide cable eyelet off transmission shift lever.
  2. Move shift lever on transmission rearward until fully seated into Park detent. Verify engagement of park lock by attempting to rotate drive shaft. Park lock is engaged if drive shaft cannot be rotated. Slide cable eyelet onto transmission shift lever.
  3. Snap gearshift cable into cable mounting bracket. Press down on cable adjuster clamp to lock cable. Lower vehicle and verify engine starting. Engine should start only with gearshift lever in Park or Neutral.
