DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

WARNINGDeactivate air bag system before performing any service operation involving steering column or instrument panel components. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. Do not apply electrical power to any component without first deactivating air bag system. Air bag may deploy.

Power seat allows positions to be adjusted for optimum control using power seat switches located on seat cushion side shield. Power seat system allows position to be adjusted forward, rearward, front up, front down, rear up, or rear down. An automatic setting circuit breaker, located in junction block, is used to protect power seat system circuit. There are 3 reversible motors that operate power seat track assembly. Motors are connected to worm drive gearboxes that move seat track through a combination of screw-type drive units. Power seat track assembly cannot be repaired, and is serviced as a complete unit. If any component in seat track is faulty or damaged, entire power seat track assembly must be replaced.

Optional heated seats are individually controlled by Seat Heat Interface Module (SHIM) which monitors inputs and controlled outputs of heated seats. SHIM is programmed to provide 2 levels of heating for each front seat. A low temperature set point of 90° F (32° C) and high temperature set point of 100° F (38° C). SHIM cannot be adjusted or repaired. If SHIM is damaged or faulty, entire module must be replaced.

Heated seats uses 2 separate control switches mounted in a single switch bezel, located on center floor console directly behind transmission gearshift selector. Each heated seat has 2 settings, HI and LO. Pressing heated seat switch once will obtain desired heat position. Press heated seat switch a second time, in same direction to turn heated seats off. Each heated seat switch is a single pole, double throw, resistor-multiplexed, rocker type switch. Each heated seat switch has an amber Light Emitting Diode (LED) which illuminates to indicate selected HI or LO setting. Heated seat will not operate if temperature of seat cushion cover at either heated seat sensor is above designed temperature set points of system. Heated seats have a self-diagnostic capability. If certain failures are detected within heated seat system, heated seat switch LED indicator will flash on and off for one minute. This process will repeat each time an attempt is made to turn system on with heated seat switches until problem is corrected.

Major components for heated seat system are as follows

  1. Heated seat element is integral to individual front seat cushions and seat back trim covers.
  2. Seat Heat Interface Module (SHIM).
  3. Heated seat relay.
  4. Heated seat sensor is integral to each heated seat cushion trim cover.
  5. Heated seat switch, one for each front seat.

Heated seat system components operate on battery current received through a fused ignition switch output. System will only operate with ignition switch in ON or ACC positions. Heated seat system will turned off automatically whenever ignition switch is turned to any position except for ON or ACC positions.
