Heater Systems: Removal & Installation Jeep Cherokee III

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

WARNINGTo avoid injury from accidental air bag deployment, read and carefully follow all SERVICE PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM procedures in AIR BAG SYSTEM SAFETY article in GENERAL SERVICING.

Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect blower motor harness connector in engine compartment, near blower motor. Remove blower motor screws. Rotate and tilt blower motor assembly as needed for clearance, remove blower motor. To install, reverse removal procedure.

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Unsnap and remove instrument panel center bezel from around control panel. Remove radio (if equipped).
  2. Remove control panel screws. Disconnect electrical harness connectors and vacuum hoses. Remove control panel assembly. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Drain cooling system. Disconnect heater hoses from heater core tubes. Remove heater housing. See HEATER HOUSING . Separate halves of heater housing. Remove heater core out of lower housing. To install, reverse removal procedure.

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Drain cooling system. Disconnect heater hoses. Remove instrument panel. See «INSTRUMENT PANEL»(ref-11465-S09224147602000111400000). Disconnect electrical harness connector located next to blower motor relay.
  2. Disconnect vacuum supply hose from tee fitting located near heater core tubes. Remove 5 heater housing mounting nuts from studs in engine compartment. (Scheme 3) Pull heater housing rearward, far enough to clear studs and heater core tubes. Remove heater housing from vehicle.

  1. Place front wheels in straight-ahead position. Disable air bag system. See AIR BAG SYSTEM SAFETY article in GENERAL SERVICING. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove left and right cowl side inner trim panels. Remove knee blocker panel from below steering column. Remove instrument panel center bezel, instrument cluster bezel and top cover. Remove center support bracket from instrument panel.
  2. Remove steering wheel. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Press ignition switch release and remove switch. Remove lower column shroud. Unbolt steering coupler and remove column mounting nuts. Lower steering column. Remove upper column shroud. Disconnect wire harness from column. Remove shifter interlock cable from column on automatic transmission models.
  3. Remove steering column. Remove retaining screws from instrument panel-to-headlight and instrument panel-to-floor wiring harness connectors, located near left cowl inner panel and disconnect connectors. Disconnect 2 harness connectors located near transmission tunnel, next to instrument panel-to-floor electrical connector.
  4. Remove stop bumpers from glove box and roll glove box down. Reach through glove box opening and unplug vacuum harness connector. Disconnect antenna cable from radio. Loosen roll-down pivot bolts. (Scheme 4)
  5. Remove bolts and nuts securing top of instrument panel to dash panel at base of windshield. (Scheme 4) With an assistant, remove instrument panel from vehicle.
  6. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts and nuts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-11465-S40398569672000111400000).

Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove instrument panel. See INSTRUMENT PANEL. Insert a flat-blade screwdriver into latch hole of actuator mount. (Scheme 5) Release actuator from mount and disengage from actuator arm. Remove vacuum actuator. To install, reverse removal procedure.
