| WARNING | Deactivate air bag system before performing any service operation. See AIR BAG DEACTIVATION PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION. Do not apply electrical power to any component on steering column without first deactivating air bag system. Air bag may deploy. |
| WARNING | When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery. |
| CAUTION | Transmission and torque converter must be removed as an assembly to avoid damage to drive plate, pump bushing or oil seal. |
- Disconnect negative battery cable. From under hood, disconnect connectors for transmission solenoids and sensors. Raise and support vehicle. Drain transmission fluid. On models equipped with 2-piece transmission fill tube, remove upper half of fill tube. On all models, disconnect oil cooler lines at transmission.
- Support engine with safety stand and support transmission with appropriate jack. On 4WD models, disconnect transfer case shift linkage. On all models, remove necessary exhaust system components. Disconnect vehicle speed sensor wire harness. Mark drive shaft(s) for installation reference, and then remove from vehicle.
- Remove rear crossmember. Disconnect shift cable from transmission. Disconnect throttle valve cable from engine. Disconnect necessary vacuum and fluid hoses. On 4WD models, remove transfer case from transmission. On all models, remove crankshaft position sensor.
- Remove starter. Remove torque converter-to-drive plate bolts. Remove torque converter housing-to-engine mounting bolts. Secure transmission to transmission jack with safety chains. Pull transmission rearward and secure torque converter to transmission with "C" clamp or strap. Lower transmission from vehicle.
| CAUTION | Ensure torque converter is indexed properly before transmission installation. Surface of torque converter lugs should be recessed.500" (12.7 mm) from torque converter housing-to-engine mating surface when fully seated. |
- To install, reverse removal procedure. Reconnect all vacuum hoses and electrical connections. Reconnect all shift cables and/or linkage. Adjust shift cable, throttle valve cable and transfer case shift linkage, if necessary. See appropriate SERVICING article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS.
- On models equipped with 2-piece transmission fill tube, install NEW "O" ring seal on upper half of transmission fill tube. Connect upper and lower tube halves. On all models, tighten all fasteners to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-96555-S08188249552001041800000) . Fill transmission and transfer case with appropriate fluid. See appropriate SERVICING article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS.
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect and lower or remove necessary exhaust components. Remove engine-to-transmission braces. Disconnect oil cooler lines at transmission. Remove starter.
- Remove crankshaft position sensor. Remove torque converter access cover. Drain transmission fluid. Remove skid plate, if necessary. Remove transmission fill tube. On 4WD models, remove transfer case vent tube-to-torque converter housing bolt.
- On all models, mark torque converter and drive plate for installation reference. Remove torque converter-to-drive plate bolts. Mark drive shaft(s) for installation reference. Remove drive shaft(s).
- Disconnect park/neutral position switch and vehicle speed sensor wire harnesses. Disconnect shift cable/linkage and throttle valve cable from transmission. On 4WD models, disconnect shift rod from transfer case.
- On all models, support rear of engine with jack or safety stand. Using transmission jack, raise transmission slightly to relieve load on crossmember and supports. Remove crossmember-to-rear transmission support bolts.
- Raise transmission slightly and slide exhaust hanger arm from bracket and remove rear transmission support. Remove crossmember. On 4WD models, disconnect transfer case vent hose. Disconnect vacuum switch harness. Remove transfer case.
- On all models, remove torque converter housing-to-engine mounting bolts.
- To install, reverse removal procedure using NEW plastic grommets on shift linkage, and NEW seal on transmission fill tube. Reconnect all vacuum hoses and electrical connections. Reconnect all shift cables and/or linkage. Adjust shift cable/linkage, throttle valve cable and transfer case shift linkage, if necessary. See appropriate SERVICING article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS.
- Tighten all fasteners to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-96555-S08188249552001041800000) . Fill transmission and transfer case with appropriate fluid. See appropriate SERVICING article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS.
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Mark drive shaft(s) for installation reference. Remove drive shaft(s). Remove transmission-to-engine brace. Disconnect and lower or remove necessary exhaust components.
- Remove starter. Mark torque converter and drive plate for installation reference. Remove torque converter-to-drive plate bolts. Disconnect electrical connections to transmission. Disconnect gearshift cable at transmission manual valve lever. On 4WD drive models, disconnect transfer case shift cable.
- On all models, disconnect oil cooler lines at transmission. Disconnect transmission vent hose. Support rear of engine with safety stand or jack. Raise transmission slightly to relieve load on crossmember and supports. Remove crossmember.
- On 4WD models, remove transfer case. On all models, remove torque converter housing-to-engine mounting bolts. Secure transmission to transmission jack with safety chains. Pull transmission rearward slightly. Secure torque converter to transmission with "C" clamp or strap. Lower transmission from vehicle.
