Wheel Alignment Specifications & Procedures: Other Jeep Cherokee II

VEHICLE CHECKS

Before making wheel alignment adjustments, check and adjust the following items

1. Tire pressure must be inflated to manufacturer's specifications. Tires should be equal in size and type. Runout must not be excessive. Tires and wheels should be in balance.
2. Wheel bearings must be properly adjusted. Steering linkage and suspension must not have excessive wear and/or looseness.
3. Steering gear box must not have excessive play. Check and adjust to manufacturer's specifications.
4. Vehicle must be level with floor. Bounce front and rear of vehicle several times to allow vehicle to settle to normal ride height.
5. Ensure steering wheel is centered and front wheels are in straight-ahead position. Adjust toe-in if necessary. Ensure wheel lug nuts are tightened to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-61120-S25719756102001011800000) .

CAMBER MEASUREMENT

Note. Camber is not adjustable. Check camber to determine if any components are bent or damaged. If camber angle is not to specification, components causing the problem must be replaced. See ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS .

Cherokee, Comanche & Wagoneer

1. Set front wheels straight-ahead. Measure toe and compare to specifications. See «ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-61120-S05773468492001011800000).
2. Center steering wheel by counting the turns required to hit left and right steering stops. Center steering wheel mid-way between stops. Loosen drag link adjustment sleeve clamp bolts. (Scheme 3) Rotate sleeve with appropriate tool to adjust right wheel toe to specification. Position clamp bolts so threaded bolt ends face upward and to rear of vehicle. Tighten drag link sleeve bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-61120-S25719756102001011800000).
3. Loosen clamp bolts at each end of tie rod. Rotate tie rod with appropriate tool to adjust left wheel to toe specification. See «ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-61120-S05773468492001011800000). When adjustment is complete, position sleeve as described earlier and tighten to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-61120-S25719756102001011800000).

Scheme 3

Grand Wagoneer & Wrangler

1. Center front wheels straight-ahead and lock steering wheel in centered position. Measure toe and compare to specifications. See «ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-61120-S05773468492001011800000).
2. Loosen tie rod adjustment sleeve clamp bolts. (Scheme 4)and (Scheme 5). Rotate sleeve with appropriate tool to adjust toe to specification. See «ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-61120-S05773468492001011800000). After adjustment, position clamp bolts so threaded ends face rearward and are angled upward. Tighten sleeve clamp to specification. 3. If necessary, steering wheel can be centered by adjusting the drag link adjustment sleeve. When adjustment is complete, position sleeve as described earlier and tighten to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-61120-S25719756102001011800000).

Grand Wagoneer Vehicles

Check outside wheel turning angle and compare to specifications. See ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS . To adjust, loosen lock nuts on turning angle adjustment screws. Using a turntable to measure angle, adjust screws to obtain correct outside turning angle for each wheel. Tighten adjustment screw lock nuts.
