Removal (XJR & XJ8)

  1. Fully raise door glass. Remove battery cover and disconnect ground cable from battery terminal. Remove interior door handle trim. Using a trim stick, carefully ease rear veneer panel inward to release rear tabs. Slide veneer rearward to release front retainers.
  2. Remove armrest center screw. Carefully release door panel from 8 retainers. Lift rear edge of door panel to release retaining clip. Lift door panel until it clears door lock button. Using pliers, remove housing from clip and fit on door panel.
  3. Disconnect wiring harness connectors from door panel. Remove armrest clip housing and install on door. Remove screws and door inner seal. Remove water shield and PVC inner weatherstrip to access motor. Remove 3 screws and door module.
  4. Tape top of glass to door frame. Disconnect window motor wiring harness connector. (Scheme 1) Remove screws and nuts attaching motor/window regulator assembly to door. Mark position of door glass guide screws, and remove screws.
  5. Detach motor/window regulator assembly from glass, and remove motor/regulator from bottom of door. Remove 3 screws and motor from window regulator.

Installation

  1. To install, reverse removal procedure. Connect a 12-volt battery to motor, and raise glass. Draw a horizontal line along top edge of glass, and vertically down along rear edge ("B" pillar side).
  2. Raise and lower glass to ensure it is seating squarely in the seal. If glass is tilted rearward, move glass guide downward in slot. If glass is tilted forward, move glass guide upward in slot. Reposition guide and tighten screw.
  3. Recheck alignment of glass, raising an lowering glass several times. Readjust if necessary. Raise glass to fully closed position and disconnect battery from motor. Loosen regulator up-stop bolt. (Scheme 2) Move stop rearward to abut regulator quadrant, and tighten regulator up-stop bolt.

Removal & Installation (XK8)

  1. Open door and turn ignition on. Fully raise door glass. Turn ignition off. Remove battery cover and disconnect ground cable from battery terminal. Remove interior door handle trim.
  2. Remove trim mat from pocket at rear of door. Remove door panel screw. Using a plastic hook, release plastic stud and remove trim from front door pocket. Remove screw for switch pack and position switch pack aside.
  3. Remove screw, in switch pack opening, securing casing (door panel) to door bracket. Carefully remove door panel, and disconnect wiring harness connectors.
  4. Remove speaker. Remove door panel center support bracket. Remove tape securing courtesy light (puddle light) wiring harness. Remove water shield and reposition wiring harness. Reposition PCV water shield for access to motor.
  5. Remove clips from nylon sliders, on window regulator arms, and save for installation. Detach regulator arms from nylon sliders. Fully raise door glass and secure with tape.
  6. Disconnect wiring harness for power window regulator motor through speaker opening. Measure position of stud, in elongated hole of door, securing regulator channel. (Scheme 3) Remove nut from stud.
  7. Remove 4 screws and power window regulator. Lower regulator to bottom of door, and close scissor mechanism (regulator arms). Turn power window regulator and remove from door. Remove screws and power window motor.
  8. To install, reverse removal procedure. Position stud, securing regulator channel, ensuring it is located in original position.
  9. It may be necessary to adjust regulator up-stop. To do so, raise glass to fully closed position. Loosen regulator up-stop bolt. (Scheme 4) Move stop rearward to contact regulator quadrant, and tighten regulator up-stop bolt. If adjustment is required, partially lower glass and adjust position of up-stop bolt.

Removal (XK8)

  1. Remove convertible top assembly. See CONVERTIBLE TOPS article. Disconnect wiring harness for quarter window motor. Remove water shield (early PVC type), carefully routing wiring harness through opening.
  2. Remove 3 lock nuts attaching quarter window motor/regulator assembly to body. Carefully remove motor/regulator assembly through molded water shield (later type) opening.
  1. With an assistant holding quarter glass, install molded water shield (later type) and window motor/regulator assembly on body. Install, but DO NOT fully tighten, lock nuts attaching motor regulator assembly.
  2. Install water shield (early PVC type). Install and fully raise convertible top assembly, until it latches properly. DO NOT install speaker, rear quarter molding, or rear seat at this time.
  3. Fully raise door glass. Connect a 12-volt battery to rear quarter glass motor, and raise glass until it just contacts top seal. Loosen lower lock nut. (Scheme 5) Move quarter glass to obtain a.59" (15 mm) gap between front edge of rear quarter glass frame and rear edge of door glass. Tighten lower lock nut.
  4. Loosen upper lock nut. Turn upper lock nut to achieve lateral alignment of quarter glass upper edge with top seal. Tighten upper lock nut. Loosen rear lock nut. Turn rear lock nut to achieve lateral alignment of quarter glass rear edge with top seal. Tighten rear lock nut.
  5. Fully raise rear quarter glass, check alignment around seals, and readjust as necessary. Connect wiring harness for quarter window motor. Fully raise and lower convertible top. Recheck alignment of glass once more. Reverse removal procedure to complete installation.
